The Media Create Japanese chart results are out, and this week has some interest for Nintendo fans courtesy of the debut of ARMS.
Nintendo's new IP claimed number one spot and passed 100,000 sales, though that's well below the figures we saw for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when it arrived in late April (it hit over 280,000 units on its debut). For a fresh franchise it's a decent outcome, we'd suggest, while Switch games account for the top three in what was otherwise a quiet week.
- [NSW] Arms (Nintendo, 06/16/17) – 100,652 (New)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 16,822 (522,091)
- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 10,200 (504,726)

- [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo, 12/01/16) – 2,599 (1,052,401)
- [Wii U] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 2,242 (133,024)

- [PS4] Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition (SIE, 12/03/15) – 2,074 (193,485)
Moving on to hardware we see an increase for Nintendo Switch, likely helped by ARMS and some restocks, while PS4 consolidates second place ahead of the New 3DS LL (XL). The results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- Switch – 37,709 (27,291)
- PlayStation 4 – 18,251 (14,595)
- New 3DS LL – 11,592 (11,442)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 5,795 (4,546)
- PlayStation Vita – 4,149 (4,063)
- 2DS – 2,655 (2,752)
- New 3DS – 815 (917)
- Xbox One – 308 (166)
- PlayStation 3 – 298 (392)
- Wii U – 199 (255)
A solid debut for ARMS, which showed that it certainly has some reach with Switch owners.

First reasonable Switch hardware sales increase in 6 weeeks, they've been hovering around ~25,000 previously. It's not a major increase though, it could be production issues. The sales for ARMS are decent all things considered. The Japanese market overall though is in a right state.
Edit: And I find it kind of ironic that Nintendo wouldn't produce more Wii U consoles at times for the Japanese market when they could have. And now, if reports are to be believed they've no choice in the matter with regards to increasing Switch production.
Very solid debut for ARMS! Hopefully this encourages Nintendo to release GOOD Mario Sports games with lots of depth and wacky arenas and new voice clips!
Nice! I hope Nintendo can translate those same results stateside.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Switch sales numbers at this point are only going to be dictated by the available stock, not the actual demand. They sell out everywhere immediately, especially in Japan. I'm not going to take the week-by-week numbers as an indication of the system's success, only as an indication of how many Nintendo can produce.
And it's nice to see ARMS performing well for a new IP. I've been playing it pretty obsessively over the weekend. I was a little hesitant to love it at first, but something clicked after a few hours of playing and suddenly I find myself obsessed.
Decent results, which are very similar to Splatoon when it debuted back in 2014. That game has now sold over 1 million in Japan; will ARMS do the same thing? I hope so.
Nintendo is back!
I feel desperately sorry for the people who think that 37k for a system under any circumstances is bad. It's even more impressive when you take stock shortages into account.
Also that's only two days of sales for Arms. 100k is great.
@Equinox I thought someone might mention this. I was talking this morning elsewhere about fighting games recently released by Japanese developers and how they've made a mess of them. I heard about the latest Marvel vs Capcom game and how it seems the majority of people aren't happy with what they've seen of it so far.
Guess which is the new model for Chun Li and Dante respectively?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
You should cry to see Wii U got even worse on sales.
Better put your faith on Switch as the replacement of Wii U.
You can put Switch together with your Wii U because lately, a lot of users here called you Troller or Whatever.
Just accept if Wii U is not the Best of all.
I'm sure the bump was because Nintendo wanted a few extra consoles on shelves to go along with what is basically the first, first party exclusive. 1,2 Switch doesn't count imo.
Yay... !
Switch is Numero Uno.
Ouch... !
New 3DS XL should need some great 3DS games during July 2017.
Let's kick PS4 butt again, New 3DS XL !!
It's weird to see there is NO Portal Knights at Top 20 charts in Japan, consider that game was also released on Japan too. Minecraft was still on Top 20 chart with less better graphics style than Portal Knights. That's weird...
I've been suprised to be fighting mostly english names in party mode. In Splatoon, it's usually mostly Japanese (which means I lose a lot). I wonder how well Arms has done here in the US and the UK
@Equinox Regardless, not far off.
More intrigued by the total sales of BotW and MK8D on Switch. Both have passed the half a million mark, wonder how BotW compared to other Zeldas in Japan as it was going on a bit of a downward trend.
I expect MK8D will have long legs and eventually pass 1 Million.
I wonder how many of those Splatoon 2 bundles will be available as that is likely to be one heck of a launch in Japan.
@Equinox
Japanese gamers indeed like ARMS and Pokken better than Tekken 7 / SF V, right ?
Switch is now ARMS and ready for battle.
Splatoon sold 144,000 copies at launch and went on to sell over 1.5 million copies LTD.
Let's see where Arms ends up.
Although stock shortages are obviously A Bad Thing, their presence (if you can describe an absence as 'presence') does help justify Nintendo's initially questioned strategy of launching the console so far out from the crucial 'Holiday Season'.
If they're already selling through stocks in July, the argument for postponing launch to capitalise on the key sales period doesn't make a lot of sense. The only thing better than selling like hot cakes in December is selling like hotcakes all the way up to it too.
Still, hopefully supplies will be a more robust come the end of the year. It sounds like they're going to need them.
Good news for Nintendo, even if Arms doesn't click with me, I recognize its a pretty fun game for most. Hope the sales stay good=more fun games down the road for everyone.
@Equinox Terrible Switch sales? Are you serious???
"ARMS certainly has some reach with Switch owners"
@ThomasBW84 I see what u did there.
100k for Arms in Japan? That's fantastic for a new IP!
I like it. Simple controls, great graphics, cool music, and difficulty is great as you progress.
Well done!
Note to Capcom: think of the nice sales bump you'd get from Monster Hunter XX on Switch. Hurry up! And don't forget the western localisation, either.
The sales figures for the Mana collection aren't bad either, especially considering how little effort Squenix seems to have put into it.
I hope Nintendo is holding back Switch stocks to prepare for the Splatoon launch. Arms launched with a comgnet score of around 65 pt and sold 100k, Splatoon 2 has around 700 pt. with one month to go, this beast is going to sell 1 million copies at launch in Japan
I was really hoping to see higher sales for the Mana Collection (37,000 seems very low, even for a lazy compilation).
@Equinox I have no doubt that they are holding some back for Splatoon 2 each week, but not a ton, they really do need to find a solution for production volume, but this loop will likely continue for a while. I'd expect maybe around 70k Hardware sales week for Splatoon 2's release.
The top 3 games and easily the best selling console. It is a great time to be a Big N fan.
Sorry not sorry, haters!
Nintendo is still doing well despite the Switch shortage. I think they have to get their supply issues straightened out by the end of summer though, otherwise their numbers won't come in as expected by the end of the year, which would mean 3rd parties would be less interested in making games.
I bought Arms on Sunday, great game. Very happy so far with my decision to buy a Switch on day 1. All I need is one new good game a month and they've delivered and will continue to do so into 2018.
The awkward moment when a new fighting game ip trash old established fighting games. I am really impressed with ARMS
As for Tekken ....what can i say . The numbers are really bad
Good news for ARMS! It certainly have Splatoon-like appeal in it, and hopefully it will reach as well. Even just 50% of what Splatoon have done will be a great success for ARMS. I'm a fan of it since the introduction and happy to see it doing relatively well.
I also love Splatoon since the introduction, but never have access to it since I don't have a Wii U, however next month I'll finally be able to play it. Can't wait!
Go, go Switch!
Great software and hardware numbers for the switch. The number for arms are fantastic since its a new fighting game ip. Although the game not for me.
My relationship with Arms is the epitome of love/hate. I can't stop playing but I wish I were better!
Once again we see the importance of western "AAA" games in the Japanese charts. The boost in Xbox sales is evidence of that.
@jeffri
I can't wait either! If it's as good as the original you will love it. 😎
@Fandabidozi I'm sure I will
Am I the only person who is impressed by the fact we're still seeing games like Mario Kart 7 and Animal Crossing: New Leaf still selling a lot of units every week to be in the top 20? I would have expected Nintendo to stop printing Mario Kart 7 by now, considering people could purchase the game off the Nintendo eShop if they really wanted it.
Mario Kart and Zelda are going to be evergreens for Nintendo this generation cycle. Every time a new game comes out, a bunch of systems are sold and people go back to those games.
@ThomasBW84 - Famitsu is reporting 49k SWITCH consoles sold this reporting week not the 37k that Media creature reporting. . . :/
@HopeNForever There are also plenty of used copies of MK7 too! Incredible to sell this amount of new copies YEARS after it was released!
@memoryman3 I love when you comment in the GameXplain videos. It always triggers people.
@SuperCharlie78 Nintendo is overtaking the Japanese market.
@thesilverbrick This is true except in his country. Lol! Anyway, I was the other day at Best Buy and there were 3 Switch system. I got a second one for my fiancee. I have it in my hands but was unsure of buying it. Then a dude came in and pick one. I was like ok it is wise not to put this back on the shelve. Then like 5 minutes later another guy pick up the other one. So I was like, this is now imagine when Splatoon and Mario gets release so I decided to pick it up. I stay around for a bit to see if anyone will go and look and 3 people were looking for the machine to buy it but well there were none anymore.
So yes the Switch numbers as of now are only limited by its availability.
@retro_player_22 hey good pun!!
Did no one at Nintendo have the foresight to not utilize hardware that has components also used by the single most popular mobile device in the world?
@Nico87
It is bad compared to how systems used to sell over there. But, there is the stock shortage so it's impossible to know what the Switch could be selling. I think it'd be around at least 70K consistently if there were no stock issues.
As a fighting game fan who just can't get the hang of them, I will pick up ARMS later. If these sales are anything to go by, I should have plenty of opponets.
@Jessica286 I hear you, and good on you for picking up a second one when you had a chance. I'm hoping to get a second Switch for my wife before Splatoon 2 releases, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to track one down before then.
