Re: Miyamoto: Fresh Experiences Make A New Game, Not New Characters

Captain_Balko

I think that the bottom line is that new IPs could be great, but they are simply and will always be a much harder sell. For example, the Wonderful 101 is a new IP. I saw a lot of footage of the game, but didn't really understand it, so I wasn't too keen on buying it. However, I had the opportunity to try it myself whilst on vacation in Chicago, and realized what I was missing. I will now purchase this new IP game.

But I wouldn't have had to try it first if it was an IP that I know and love - be it Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Kid Icarus, Kirby, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, whatever else - because I trust that those games will be fantastic since I've played other games that featured those IPs and I quite liked them. However, I'm suspicious of new IPs, because I can't be sure that they will appeal to me or that I will like them at all. That's why Wonderful 101 was such a hard sell - it was new and unheard of. And that scares a lot of people (or at least makes them, as I pointed out, suspicious), myself included.

Re: Miyamoto: Fresh Experiences Make A New Game, Not New Characters

Captain_Balko

I completely agree with this.

This idea transcends all forms of media and is applicable to the vast majority. For example, when I go to the cinema, I will likely choose something familiar rather than a random film that has no ties to anything (likely, not always, obviously). For example, if a sequel to a movie that I quite liked is playing, I'll watch that rather than a different movie. Or I'll pick a film that features actors that I enjoy, rather than one with actors that I've never seen before. Or perhaps I'd choose a film that was a reboot because I liked the original. People crave familiarity.

Put it this way. Imagine a world where Batman never existed. Batman Begins literally invents Batman. Will it be successful? Will there even be a Dark Knight Trilogy. No, probably not.

Re: Hands On: StreetPass Plaza's Downloadable Content

Captain_Balko

If you hit the same person multiple times in battle, do you still get their entire army again and again? Or is it a one time deal? Because my brother has a 3DS and we each have around 600 tags or so so I figure we'd be plowing through Battle if our armies continually grew from each other's Streetpass tags.

Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Fourteen

Captain_Balko

An Animal Crossing filled weekend for me. So much New Leaf that I overdose. And between checks on my town, I'll finally finish off DK Country Returns 3D. I've been having some trouble with the last world, been finding it pretty difficult. My 95 lives have dropped to around 70.

Also, if I've got time, some Luigi U and on Sunday, Game and Wario, baby!

Re: Miyamoto Unsure Nintendo Can Make Another "Great" F-Zero Game

Captain_Balko

@Bigmac1910 Nope. Whatever Miyamoto says should go. This is the man who was so instrumental in creating some of the greatest games of all time, ranging from Mario to Zelda to Pikmin to more. He knows what he's doing, and I for one put my complete faith in him.
Also, Pikmin 3 has been promised since the Wii was released. It's good that he is keeping to his word (to an extent, I suppose) and releasing it on Wii U.

Re: Review: Game & Wario (Wii U)

Captain_Balko

Getting this day one. I have a brother who I can play this with at all times so I don't have to worry about going solo (to be honest, if I had to play a Wii U game solo I'd just try to clear up my backlog, mainly Zombi U). I have always adored the Wario Ware series, and have all of them except (unfortunately) for Wario Ware Touched, which upsets me. Twisted was a notable favourite of mine. I love the crazy collectibles in Wario Ware, and I spend an absurd amount of time collecting them all (and playing with them). In Twisted, I probably spent more time playing with the minigames and random stuff that I collected than I spent on the actual microgames.

Re: Nintendo Teases Majora's Mask Remake Again, Again

Captain_Balko

I'm sure it will happen eventually (it had better, or I will be writing a strongly worded email to some unfortunate NOA worker). Maybe around the time Wii U Zelda comes out they'll announce it. So 2016? Maybe? PLEASE. NINTENDO. JUST TELL ME IF THIS IS REAL OR NOT.

Re: Not All Super Smash Bros. Characters Will Make The Leap To Wii U And 3DS

Captain_Balko

Things I will do if Toon Link doesn't make the cut (which I doubt he will as he is a clone and he is seen driving the Spirit Train in one of the courses)
1. Stare in disbelief
2. Shake my head in disbelief
3. Cry for a while
4. Swear that I won't buy the game
5. Buy the game anyways (both 3DS and Wii U)
6. Cry some more
7. Commit seppuku with my samurai sword
8. Suck it up and play as regular Link instead
9. Find a new character to main (maybe Villager, for sure Little Mac if he's included)
10. Repeat process if my new main isn't in the next Smash Bros

Re: Reggie Unmoved By The Threat Of $400 PlayStation 4

Captain_Balko

@LordsOfSkulls I usually never use this expression, but I have to now: LOL!
"Mario - Little Big Planet
Zelda - DarkSiders/Folklore/ all the JRPGs on PS3
Smash Bros - Playstation All Star
Mario Kart - Little Big Planet Kart"

Lets start with Mario. Completely different from LBP. That's like saying every platformers is the same, which is incredibly fallacious, but lets just, ignore that, yes? There are currently only a few (2 Console, and 2 portable, but I could be mistaken) LBP games out. There are TONS of Mario games. Plus Mario has 3D platformers as well, unlike LBP. Completely invalid point.
So, Zelda and Darksiders are similar, fine. But Darksiders II is on Wii U. So it's no exclusive. Furthermore, it's a great series, sure, but it's certainly no Zelda game. And Zelda is NOT a JRPG. I'm not sure where you're getting your facts from, but last I checked Zelda is an Action-Adventure game that basically defined its own genre. If I want to play a JRPG, I'll stick with Dragon Quest (which is a series that is generally only released on Nintendo consoles, as of late). But Zelda isn't a JRPG.
And then you compare Smash Bros to a ripoff of it that Sony made called PS Allstars. I'm sure it's a good game, but it's also been called "A FAILURE" by Sony, and the sequel was cancelled. So you will be stuck with one lousy PS3 clone of Smash Bros while we get a new Smash Bros every generation (two this generation).
And with Mario Kart, you've got another weak clone to deal with in the form of LBP Kart. Last I checked, Mario games are released for each Nintendo system. How many LBP Karts do you have? One? Okay, I hope you have fun with your single mediocre Kart racing experience that doesn't hold a candle to the strategy of Mario Kart. Now I'm going to play MK7 while waiting for 8. Good day.

Also, I don't know WHAT you're talking about with Pikmin. It's Nintendo's take on the RTS genre. It cannot be compared with Portal, that's for sure. And if I want to play Portal, I don't need a PS3, I've got my PC for that.

Re: Reggie Unmoved By The Threat Of $400 PlayStation 4

Captain_Balko

I think that people fail to take into account that many parents would rather buy their children the family friendly Nintendo products than the PS4. I'm a swim instructor, and 90% of the kids that I teach that I asked about video games only have Nintendo systems, and it's more like 100% if they're under 10. When big Nintendo games come out, kids talk at school and whatnot, and beg their parents. This will occur with Mario 3D World and other games.

Re: Smash Bros. Director Pushing Himself "To The Brink" To Decide Character Roster

Captain_Balko

Poor guy. Physical injuries hindering his work, which is obviously extremely stressful from the sound of it. I think part of the problem is that Nintendo has got a very rich history of games that he has to go through, and he has to decide which fan bases to make happy, and unfortunately which ones will be angry that their character wasn't included. We Nintendo fans are a very passionate bunch, and I'm sure it would sting if people all over the internet started criticizing his decisions (like the haters that think that Wii Fit trainer was a stupid choice, despite the fact that Wii Fit sold more than most Zelda games).

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Curious Decision to Monetise StreetPass

Captain_Balko

This is BS. 5$ for a Streetpass game? You can get Gunman Clive for half of that. I might still get them depending on the reviews... but you have to remember, it all depends on where you live. I get MAYBE three hits a month (not including the ones from my brother), sometimes way more, sometimes none at all, but on average I'd say three is fair. Of those three, how many are going to have the same DLC on their streetpass? I'm guessing maybe 5% of 3DS users are going to buy these. That means I've got about a 1.6% chance per month of meeting somebody with this software, which is absurdly low.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Will Have A Single Player Campaign

Captain_Balko

@BlackStar9000 Free DLC would be awesome, but I have a feeling that if they do paid DLC they'll release a lot, and I will be forced to buy literally everything. I would hypothetically spend an additional 50$ or more per system after already paying 60$ for the Wii U version and 40$ for the 3DS, which would be a grand total of 200$ for my Smash Bros. It will be a dark day for my bank account, I'll tell you that much.

Re: First Impressions: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Captain_Balko

Well, the new water levels and 'dynamic' camera angles look like they're going to 'shake things up' a bit. Plus, I'm sure Dixie Kong will play differently from Diddy, which will be cool.

Is it more of the same? Probably. But when the same is tons of fun, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I was disappointed that Retro wasn't working on Metroid (or Starfox, for that matter), yes, but I guess that maybe we'll have something along those lines to look forward to at the next E3. Maybe.

Re: Nintendo Reveal Why Its 3D Mario Title Isn't Super Mario Galaxy 3

Captain_Balko

I'm probably the only one who felt this way, but I was very upset when this was announced. Like extremely so.

I'm a hardcore Mario fan, and I loved Mario 3D Land. But this? No. I liked Mario 3D Land because it fit on a portable. I don't want to play a multiplayer version of it on my Wii U. I want a new Mario game where I collect stars, play on my lonesome (with some help from a co-star, maybe) and DON'T climb up a flag pole to win. I never thought I'd be THAT GUY, but NO, Nintendo, I AM NOT AMUSED. Where is my REAL 3D Mario game? Will we even get one this generation? WHY NINTENDO? WHY, OH SWEET BABY JESUS, WHY?

I'm still going to buy it though. Because that's just who I am. I buy Mario games regardless of quality. But I think I have every right to be pissed off right now.

Re: Flipnote Studio 3D to Hit North America Early August, Subscription Pricing Revealed

Captain_Balko

@kyuubikid213 When flipnote studio for Dsi came out, I was around 14. I had no job, and relied only on birthday money and the occasional gift from my parents to buy games for me. I remember saving for a year and a half for my DSi. I absolutely loved flipnote studio. However, if the service isn't free, parents won't be keen on lending their children online money to pay for "a service". Lots of kids that may be serious about making flipnotes (I know I was, I spent countless hours on that little application) don't have any way of paying this monthly fee if their parents won't allow them to. Internet may be in their household for their family. They may get a 3DS as a gift. That doesn't mean that they aren't on their own financially when it comes to buying games. And my argument that not everyone can use a credit card or go out and buy prepaid eShop cards stands.

I still think that a straight fee is the way to go. Monthly subscriptions, no matter how cheap, are both annoying and much disliked.

Re: Feature: Our Top 10 3DS Games - Summer 2013

Captain_Balko

@CanisWolfred Understood. However, I recognize that opinions are not wrong or right, and that everybody has got a different opinion. My problem certainly isn't with your opinion, but rather with your 'evidence'. "I'm cool because I have a different opinion than you MAINSTREAM LOSERS" isn't an argument. You said that three of their games were ports. I proved that this was untrue and that even if it was, two of your games would be considered ports as well. Notice I didn't attack you about your anger that no 3rd party games were on the list - yeah, I think that Nintendo's games are superior, but that is undoubtedly my opinion, and you have a different one. I fully respect that. However, when you start uttering falsities, that's where I draw the line.

And I do apologize for my walls of text. My biggest weakness is an inability to be brief. However, my weakness is apparently acting up again, because I'm not finished. In your comment, you didn't even bother to defend your points. No logic was used. Literally your only argument is "I have opinions, so hah!". My theory is that you recognized that what you said was incorrect (about the ports) and instead of admitting that you were wrong, you changed the topic to something completely unrelated. I'd still like to continue our discussion on ports - what is a port, what is a remastering, et cetera. The fact is, I don't believe you have any real arguments left after your "well Japan only, so yeah" and "SO MUCH CONTENT AND STUFF" arguments were dismantled.

Also, I apologize for using the word "arguing". It has a negative connotation (not to me, but to others). I suppose what I'd like is to debate. However, it appears that you've resorted to informal fallacies instead of solid, logical arguments.

In summary? Your opinions are not wrong. Nobody can have a "wrong" opinion. However, the way that you present your opinion is off, and your evidence is off.

"This list sucks" - an opinion, and understandable. I can "deal" with it.
"This list sucks because it has too many ports! Now here is my list! It ALSO has ports, but because I don't define them as ports, it's all good!" - An opinion backed up by false evidence, becomes a false argument. I am most certainly NOT okay with that.

The only reason I can think of that you'd want to "stop responding to me" is that you have trouble debating against me. In my opinion, you're one of the more interesting people to debate with here because our opinions are so different from mine. I can tell you haven't exactly had a fun time talking with me on here, but I can tell you that I've had a relatively good experience talking with you. If this stops now, neither of us will have a chance to affect each other's opinion in the future. Who knows what could come out of our continued debates (on other topics, of course)? Maybe you'd convince me to play a neat JRPG that I was skeptical of, or I could change your mind about a "mainstream" game that you never gave a chance. The possibilities are endless.

In order to keep this going, I formally apologize for offending you at all (if I did), and respectfully ask that you not flat out ignore me if I decide to spark a debate about a comment of yours, and I'd be honoured if you did the same for me. Debating happens to be an interest of mine (if you haven't guessed) and I'd be happy if our debates would continue in the future (considering this one has already been won). What do you say?

Yours in Gaming,
Captain B. "Balko Punch" Balko

P.S. Is Captain Baka a reference? Because I am wholly unsure.

Re: Feature: Our Top 10 3DS Games - Summer 2013

Captain_Balko

@CanisWolfred First of all, I said in my post that I knew Soul Hackers was a Japanese exclusive, but you obviously missed that part, otherwise you wouldn't be telling me. (No, don't recall the statement "Soul Hackers is a port (yes, of a Japanese exclusive Saturn game, but a port nonetheless)" that was included in my previous point?) Also, it really doesn't matter how much content Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate added - it's still a port. The amount of content isn't even taken into account. According to Wikipedia (I know, not the best source, but I don't have time to find another "Porting is also the term used when a video game designed to run on one platform, be it an arcade, video game console, or personal computer, is converted to run on a different platform." Where in that definition does it mention what regions the game was released in. Ergo, basic logic dictates that if Soul Hackers was released on the Sega Saturn (it doesn't matter where) and was then re-released on the Nintendo 3DS, it is a PORT. Period. As for content, if ANY new content is added, I believe for all intensive purposes the game is referred to as "remastered". The amount of content does not matter. So, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is still a "remastered" version (or perhaps upgraded, if you are so inclined to prefer that term) of Monster Hunter 3, since it IS the same game, just with much more content (hence the ULTIMATE). Using that logic, actually, Ocarina of Time 3D is 'remastered' because it had upgraded graphics and a boss battle mode. Starfox 64 3D is 'remastered' because it had upgraded graphics and an upgraded multiplayer mode. And DK Country 3D was 'remastered' because it featured 3D graphics, and a new mode with new items and levels. Essentially, your points are invalid because 1. None of the games mentioned are ports in the first place, and 2. Even if they WERE considered ports, your arguments that your games are apparently not ports make zero logical sense.

So I suppose the person that should be saying nice try is ME? Wow. Okay.
Nice try, Mr. Wolfred. I'm not sure if you'll reply again, but I doubt you will. However, if you choose to, I'll be waiting to throw yet another wrench into your unsatisfactory arguments. (remember what happened on the "top 10 SNES games" page? Good times)

Re: Feature: Our Top 10 3DS Games - Summer 2013

Captain_Balko

@CanisWolfred So you say that you dislike this top ten because, as another user said, there are too many ports (and not enough third party games). However technically speaking Devil Summoners: Soul Hackers is a port (yes, of a Japanese exclusive Saturn game, but a port nonetheless) and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is an upgraded port. DK Country 3D includes a "new" mode with more items and more courses, so that is upgraded as well (although technically a port). And yes, Starfox and Zelda don't have much extra going for them other than upgraded graphics (Starfox had an upgraded multiplayer mode and crappy gyroscope controls, and Zelda had Master Quest included which was nice, a neat boss battle mode, and the Water Temple was colour coded so people don't rage throughout it). Still, 2 of 7 (or instead of 7, 10, but only if you count the games that you listed which weren't release yet) of your listed games were ports. That's one less than Nintendo Life. I'm not sure that it's fair to complain about Nintendo Life's list on those grounds.

Re: Flipnote Studio 3D to Hit North America Early August, Subscription Pricing Revealed

Captain_Balko

It's really unfair for people to say that complaining about this is wrong. It sounds fine and dandy on paper - it's just a dollar after all - but suppose after the free trial, you get hooked. You decide to pay every month. That adds up to 12$ a year. For the rest of the console cycle, as @citizenerased said, that would add up to 48$. For 48$, I could buy, say, Mario Kart 7, and have unlimited online access for as long as their servers are up, plus a fantastic single player experience that could basically last as long as you want it to. This just gives you access to a community that was free on the Dsi equivalent.
Plus, that isn't even taking tax into account. I know I have to pay a 13% tax on that money, and people in some countries have to pay even more.
Also, I'm assuming this money comes out of your eShop account. Not everybody has a credit card always available - some people don't yet have credit (myself included) and have to use a parent's card when adding to their account. They don't have the ability to add willy nilly considering it isn't their card to use. Furthermore, lots of people don't even have a credit card in their household, and have to use prepaid cards. This 'measly' one dollar per month adds up, and eats away at your eShop money. It will cause you to have to go out and buy eShop cards more often, which might be an inconvenience to people that don't necessarily live near somewhere where the cards are available.
Lastly, people will sometimes feel obligated to continue paying that dollar every month even if they don't use it enough to warrant paying that dollar, simply because they don't want to feel excluded from the Flipnote community. I know I will feel that way if I start paying.

Frankly, I would have been much happier if they charged a straight fee that gives you the service permanently instead of this monthly fee garbage. I don't like that I have to pay for my phone on a monthly basis, but I need my phone for practical reasons. I really want to have the Flipnote community, but I really DON'T want to pay for it monthly even more. My phone is mandatory, this is not. Actually, one of the reasons I choose Nintendo is because of not having to pay monthly fees... but this looks like it's going to change...

Re: Get Excited, Nintendo's E3 Site Is Out In The Wild

Captain_Balko

Awesome! If you look at the background on the E3 site, it flashes through games that will presumably be shown. There is a grey decal for multiple games. For example, I've seen decals representing the 3D Mario, Pikmin, Wonderful 101, Wind Waker, and Mario and Luigi Dream through refreshing multiple times! Give it a whirl.

Re: Hardware Classics: Nintendo Virtual Boy

Captain_Balko

I was at a video game exhibit at the local Science Center and I finally got to try one (along with about a hundred other neat games). The game loaded in was Mario Tennis, and I actually played a few matches before getting a slight headache. It's neat, to be sure, but nothing more than a historical curiosity for me.

They could try releasing Virtual Boy games for the 3DS Virtual Console - and making them in 3D. I would try that Wario game, for sure.

Re: GungHo's CEO Wants To Surpass Nintendo's Sales By His Retirement

Captain_Balko

Er... Sorry pal, ain't going to happen. It's fine to aim high and all, but I'm not sure if this guy realizes how much of a spec his company is compared to the big three... The mobile market is different than the console market. From what I understand, the mobile consumers are more fickle and less loyal (to software developers, not mobile companies, of course). This GungHo might have 'the next big thing' right now, but in ten years, I guarantee people will still be playing Zelda and Mario and have no idea what games GungHo made.

Re: Video: Sonic Lost World Debut Trailer Blasts Across The Internet

Captain_Balko

Am I the only one who thinks that the gameplay graphics look sort of mediocre? I mean, maybe it's just the quality of the video, but for a game being released on Wii U, it doesn't look very 'HD'. I might be wrong, but to me, the animation seemed a little lacking, and the graphics not super polished... but I'm probably wrong.

Re: Nintendo Download: 30th May (Europe)

Captain_Balko

Despite the fact that I already own both Oracle games as cartridges, I'm going to pick them up for my 3DS. Frankly, I rarely have a chance to play my GBC games any more, and I'm sure I'll be playing these a lot in between sessions of DK Country Returns 3D (and Animal Crossing: New Leaf when it is released).
