Nintendo rumours and the world of 'insiders' can occasionally be a strange, baffling place. While there's no shortage of legitimate leaks, some of the speculation can come across as tall tales, fever dreams, or even the potential machinations of Nintendo trying to bait and identify internal leakers.
One bit of speculation that just won't go away, depending on who you listen to, relates to 1-2-Switch — the Joy-Con-focused party game is supposedly getting some kind of sequel. Our response — along with others, we're sure — has generally been that of bemusement and finding the idea rather funny; our lack of even a 'rumour' post picking up on tweets and confident statements attests to this.
Which, of course, shows what we think of the original, and the lack of prestige associated with the other first-party Switch launch title. Your humble scribe recently rated the purchase of the game as a big launch day regret. Positioned as a showcase for the Joy-Con controllers in particular, it delivered in that sense, but was very different to the stylish Nintendo Land on Wii U or the iconic Wii pack-in, Wii Sports. Instead we had strange concept videos introducing a range of quirky minigames, and that was the crux of the experience. Fun in the right crowd in short bursts, but otherwise a disappointment — check out our 6/10 review for a reminder, if you like.
It doesn't seem like a game that needs or justifies a follow-up, despite insistence that it's happening. Its sales were relatively impressive, passing 3 million units, but that should be noted in the context of being a family-friendly launch title and having less competition in that first year, plus it was positioned by Nintendo as showcasing the Switch. We're not convinced that there would now be the same interest, especially considering all the other local multiplayer party and minigame experiences available on Switch. We've already had two Mario Party games, but is there really enough interest for a 1-2-Switch sequel? It sounds like Nintendo misinterpreting the original's sales numbers, but then again there are over 100 million Switches in the wild now — perhaps it's not such a crazy idea.
So, let's humour the rumour — if 1-2-Switch were to get some kind of follow-up, what could Nintendo do to make it a desirable must-have on Switch? Here are a few ideas.
Idea #1 - Make It A Budget Title (Or Even Free-To-Play)
Part of the issue with 1-2-Switch when it launched was that, like everything else related to the Switch, it felt pricey. As the Switch took off, clearly plenty were happy with game and accessory prices — very few people feel they didn't get their money's worth from Breath of the Wild, for example.
But even so, 1-2-Switch was $50, and not everyone felt the content justified that premium price. From a business perspective it was probably clever of Nintendo, as it did sell a decent amount to boost the company's coffers while Zelda did the heavy launch lifting. If a sequel / follow-up arrived a premium price, though, we suspect the online reaction would be negative to say the least.
As the generation has evolved Nintendo has started to show flexibility in pricing, even with first-party games. Titles like Nintendo Switch Sports, Big Brain Academy, and WarioWare: Get It Together! have come at prices in the $30-$40 range, setting a precedent for lower tier games that are a bit more affordable. At the very least that would have to be an option here.
If Nintendo was feeling spicy it could even dabble with a free-to-play model, with some taster minigames and then packs or individual purchases within the game. The company actually experimented with free-to-play a few times in the 3DS and Wii U era, and there are various free downloads from third-parties on Switch, too. The ice cube shaking minigame was an undeniably neat trick — we might have paid a pound/dollar/local currency unit or two to try that out on its own.
Idea #2 - Involve More Players and More Creativity
When thinking about how the 1-2-Switch style of minigame could work, one thought is to get more players involved. This could mean up to four Joy-Cons active at once, but also utilising asynchronous multiplayer ideas with some players using phones — like the Jackbox series, as an example. Bigger groups, locally and potentially online, with useful methods of communication / voice chat, can setup some particularly fun and wacky experiences.
Since 1-2-Switch, Nintendo has also gone further in utilising Switch systems and controllers. We've seen neat ideas in Mario Party entries, while Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics did clever things as well. We're all for features such as aligning Switch devices to 'join' screens and change the game; if a 1-2-Switch sequel was free-to-play or had a free accompaniment download like Clubhouse Games, it could open up some ideas that would get people talking and generate positive buzz that might stand a chance against the collective shrug a sequel would elicit from swathes of hardcore Nintendo fans.
We might be being generous with 'shrug' there, too.
Idea #3 - Make It More 'Nintendo', With Crossovers
1-2-Switch had a peculiar approach to presentation, with actors appearing in all sorts of brightly coloured rooms to demonstrate each game. This is not a criticism of the performers, they did their jobs admirably, but the tone was rather odd and it could have easily been a third-party game; it wasn't very 'Nintendo'.
If the 'brand' is to continue in some form, videos will likely return, but presentation can be adjusted. Whether character crossovers (perhaps have some CG 'demonstrations' with Nintendo characters), or a revised user interface and broader look, a lot about the game could be tonally different and adding in some retro Nintendo charm could certainly make us take a second look.
Or just put Wario in it. There's no game that isn't better if you put a Wario in it.
Idea #4 - Add It To Nintendo Switch Online
Look, just put the pitchforks down, and let's talk about this!
Nintendo Switch Online isn't going anywhere for a while, and we suspect the same applies to the Expansion Pack. When it comes to that expansion, Nintendo has been steadily adding more content to lure people in, notable especially for major game DLC additions. It's a mix of current / new DLC (Mario Kart, Animal Crossing) and older DLC (Splatoon 2), but combined with the slowly growing Nintendo 64 / SEGA Genesis library we're gradually seeing the add-on offer better value.
Would Nintendo put a new game like this on the service? It's certainly not impossible, and if anything is a candidate it could be some form of 1-2-Switch sequel.
Let's not forget, either, that the base subscription does have exclusive games, albeit specifically designed to encourage online play. Tetris 99 and others have been nice additions for subscribers, so the precedent is there for further experimentation on Nintendo's part.
So there are a handful of ideas, but what do you think? A few in our team still don't buy into the rumours that a 1-2-Switch follow-up is on the way. If it does happen, though, it'll be one of the quirkier Nintendo announcements of recent years; we can't help but be fascinated by the idea.

I think all of these listed ideas would be great. Especially the crossover one, perhaps we could get specific minigames based on certain Nintendo IPs. One where you have to jump as Mario, swing your sword as Link, or something else.
I would also love some sort of progression system, where you can unlock more games the more you play. I don't like how they unlock in the first game, where you play like 4 games and then everything unlocks. Would be cool if there's a system at least like how it's implemented in Wii Play, where one minigame unlocks the next.
This is my new drum beat. Fives years later, it is still $50 on the eShop.
Do a J Jonah Jameson laugh to the person who came up with the idea, then tell them switch sports is the de facto party game on switch.
They should call it 1-2-3 Switch
I feel like having another one of these would be redundant, and I highly doubt it'll sell this late into the console's life. It's just an over-glorified tech demo for the switch, sold at full price.
It could come bundled with a holographic projector add on for the switch for just $999.99.
I don't think it'd be worth the money no matter what they do with it.
Go back in time to 2017 and make it a pack in title! 😉 Ok, ok, I'll see myself out...
Yeah they can do whatever they want with a sequel I still wouldn't be touching the game with a 10 foot pole.
Maybe the rumour is that they'll start packing it into the Switch for "free". And of course knowing Nintendo it will be bundled "free" with the Switch Lite to get people to buy 2 Joycon. 😂
Giving it away for "free" w/ No or NO+ would be ok as well.
@helbertpina As a pack in title, it would have raised the price and/or given a mediocre first impression. They made the right decision.
There should be an all of the above option, they were all good ideas.
There's been A LOT of mini game/sports collection games for the Switch recently, and for me they've shown me how much I now like to play solo especially in hand held. It dies feel like Nintendo are using these collections to fill out their release calendar.
Cancel it. There we go, improved.
Making it actually fun would be the biggest improvement they could do
Make it you know... A video game.
I think the best course of action would be to turn it into a wario ware game focused on VS gameplay(like the shooting mini game in 1-2 switch)
No interest in the first game or a sequel.
More games for solo play and some for more players would be good. I'd also package all the original content as well. More like a Wii Fit Plus kind of deal.
"While there's no shortage of legitimate leaks"
It's sentences like this that cause overhype and dissapointment
I am proud to say that I never even once considered purchasing 1-2 Switch.
Make it more Nintendo and make it free or dirt cheap, that really should be the only approach they take to making this thing.
I'm not sure we need it, do we?
It was "supposed" to be the Wii-Sports of Switch, but was utterly disappointing.
And now we have the real "NotWii" Sports, as well as Mario Party and WarioWare bringing the minigames.
Give us that SNESRemix, instead.
First, I think it will be up to 4 players and call it 1234 switch.
Second, I got it on launch and it was very nice when there was a group of people of around. Having said that, it was a big miss from nintendo not to include it for free specially when sony added the amazing astro game with every PS5 to showcase the new controller and it did a fantastic job at that. Oh and btw I sold my 12 switch copy when the joy cons started to misfunction which was after a couple of months after purchase.
If a sequel is truly coming, it should be called 3-4-Switch.
@AJ1 They made the right decision not to include it as a pack in title. See my earlier post.
3-4 Switch sounds like a right name for a sequel.
I didn’t know those rumours were a thing…
I love this game. Way more than most people. But, I don’t think it needs a sequel. The original is fine - some of the games in it aren’t great, which makes me worried about what would happen if they needed 26 more.
Simple, make the game free
Or make Nintendo land 2 with games from 1 and new ones.
Also the first one make it 19.99 physical
I like the idea of putting it on the Expansion Pack. A full game that has an easy to understand concept and builds on another top hit would be really nice, and I am not buying the game otherwise unless it’s $30 or less. I just don’t know if there’s enough meat on this particular bone for a sequel, though. The original was built with every capability the Switch had in mind, and with the exception of more HD rumble games, any new idea would seem like a rehash. I also think that NS Sports and Mario Strikers, as well as the Mario Kart DLC, will satiate the casual audience.
The article alludes to this obliquely, but here goes -
WarioWare has a somewhat similar concept and seems to be well-loved by a certain portion of the audience. I haven't played any WW game, or 1-2-Switch. What is the essential difference between these titles? How does 1-2-Switch fail to match the quality/appeal of WW?
1-2-Switch may be expensive for what it is, but its also just a very approachable game. I’ve had nights that were dominated by 1-2-Switch and still bust it out from time to time.
With that said, if a 1-2-Switch DLC/sequel came to the expansion I think that would draw me into the NSO Expansion Pack
Not IMO unless they change the game fundamentally to be a full game. It was a tech demo that should’ve been a pack in game.
@CANOEberry If I remember right, 1-2 Switch was made by the WarioWare team. Wario Wario has goofiness too but the speed of the microgames makes it very fast paced (and typically has a lot of enjoyable microgames). It just has a lot of charm.
1-2 Switch had a few decent mini games, but most of them were just meh. Decent enough for a party, but there are better alternatives. I found Snipperclips much more enjoyable.
@darkswabber They made the right decision not to include it as a pack in title. See my earlier post (#11-ish).
Another Nintendo Land or heck, more content for Switch Sports would be much more appreciated for me. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if this rumor is true at all.
Make it a pack in.
If we get a sequel to this, before a sequel to ARMS, I'll be mad.
I'm thinking a gritty reboot, Shadow the Hedgehog style!
But really, they should involve more players and do any one of the other three options.
Other: I'd rather Nintendo leave 1-2-Switch be and use all of the time and effort to improve Nintendo Switch Sports instead.
1-2-Switch did great in showcasing the Switch's Joy Cons, but it had little else to offer otherwise and should've been a pack-in game from the start.
I haven't played the first one since my sister got a switch years ago. I remember liking the quick draw one, and the one where you have to hold a yoga pose.
How could they improve it? By making it free
@StephenYap3 I agree with your first point, but they were right not to make it a pack-in game. It wouldn’t have been viral. It wouldn’t have helped marketing. It most likely would have raised the overall Switch price.
Honestly, if they make something similar, they need to rename it and give it a new visual identity. That way it won't be associated with the poorly received original.
Still never played the original. Should've been a free pack in tech demo. It demonstrates the console in exactly the way Wii Sports did.
@Baker1000 You may change your mind after playing the original. It is no Wii Sports. Even packed-in, it wouldn’t have been viral. It also probably would have raised the price of the Switch. They made the right call.
You know what? Yeah, asyncronous. 2 players with joy con and the last one with just the screen.
PSA: 1-2-Switch can be played without the game. Just use your joycons and voilà! You have just played 1-2-Switch.
To be honest I don't think there's anything they could do to make me interested in it. Just kind of firmly not my thing.
It could be very cool if they put thought and creativity into it. The original on looked like it was slapped together by the summer interns. Bring in some Nintendo character and charm and add more depth…
1-2 Switch 99 for NSO!
I always thought a WarioWare on Switch would make fantastic use of the gimmicks shown in 1-2-Switch. Was really surprised with the direction Get It Together went. (Even though it was still a super great game!)
Introducing a new play style in which players look at each other—not the screen, don't need to turn their switch on, or even buy the game!
Make an entire epic saga based solely on the motion-cow milking minigame. Whether it'd be an udder failure or an udder success, it's best to just moo-ve along.
I honestly couldn't care less if they improve it or not. I still wouldn't buy it.
This and Arms were both new franchises on the Switch and I never was really interested. Seem fun for local multiplayer but sounds like I’m not missing out on much
Guys, I have a great idea: Let’s pretend this game never existed.
They should launch this is as another limited time game to see what happens.
make it free. the first step to me respecting this series is them realizing its not even worth $5
@WeLiveInASociety
I have 1-2-Switch game and I like it.
It does exist and I really want to see the sequel with more contents.
I love how you guys keep bringing up the sandwich guy. And that caption is great too.
No need for another stand alone game, just make whatever ideas they have into DLC for $20 and put it for free on the expansion pack, this game isn't bad, whats bad its Nintendo trying to charge people full price when its just demo ideas.
They could hardly make it more forgettable. My family absolutely loves the switch, but 1 2 switch got about 3 hours of total play.
Just get rid of the live actors is all I’m asking for.
Just...don't make it. It's as easy as 1, 2...
Well, my kids loved 1-2 Switch.
Seems pretty obvious, and am surprised it wasn't a choice but the game should have online multiplayer and some kind of single player mode. A lot of people don't have someone to play against so having online multiplayer would have sold a lot more copies. I always wanted to get 1-2 Switch but I just didn't think it would get enough use as it is, but online multiplayer would add a ton of replay value.
Wasn't there a vague rumor a few days ago about a "switch game that nobody asked for?"
Im trying to find it but having trouble.
