Re: AM2R And Pokémon Uranium Nominations Revoked At 2016 Game Awards

Aurelis

I feel like if the Game Advertis- I mean Awards really wanted to put these up for an award they would of just went with AM2R rather than pushing their luck with Uranium just for the sake of it.

They knew these would get pulled. You don't put a C&D fan game with stolen assets up for an award at a show being sponsored by the rights holder when a new game in the series is coming out without maybe asking if it's okay first. It's pretty much just a publicity stunt and designed to make Nintendo look bad.

Not saying Nintendo should of done this, but they were GOING to do this and whoever put up these awards knew damn well this was likely.

The fact that the awards also got taken down reflects badly on the show and reveals it for what it is, just a corperate event and not even slightly independant.

Re: Rumour: Super Mario And Rabbids Crossover In Development For Nintendo Switch

Aurelis

@TheLegendOfLaser Sadly, there's about zero chance of a decent story in either an Ubisoft game or a game involving minor Nintendo characters and Rabbids. What sort of dialogue are you going to get with them and Nabbit, for example?

As much as I'd like to play a game with Captain Syrup or Daisy in a starring role, I don't see it happening.

RPG is a very strange choice if true.

Re: Rumour: Super Mario And Rabbids Crossover In Development For Nintendo Switch

Aurelis

Not... sure about this. At all. The Rabbids are pretty annoying and while the Mario series is full of goofy characters, almost none of them are straight up obnoxious. There's a pretty large tonal disconnect between the Rayman and Mario universes as it is, and Rabbids are even more out there.

Kind of hope this is on the same level as that old StarFox x Metroid crossover idea... namely a nonsense rumour. But, y'know, it's 2016, the Year of Stupid, so it's probably true.

Re: Review: F-Zero X (Wii U / N64)

Aurelis

I noticed the control stick problems in SM64 and SF64, but having never bought a N64 on the Wii I don't know if it's any different in the Wii or Wii U versions. I just assumed it was a technical difference between N64 and modern control sticks.

Re: Nintendo Isn't The Only Company Impacted By The Failure Of The Wii U

Aurelis

It's hard to have too much sympathy with companies that put all their chips into the video game market without seeing just how unpredictable and volatile it is. A company like Nintendo or Sony can go from hero to zero in a moment. Both companies understand this by now and mitagate for losses, but it seems like many others never get the memo, or are only looking for short term gain.

Re: Video: Nintendo Minute Checks Out the Viz Media Link to the Past and Mario Comics

Aurelis

@Not_Soos I like you! All is well, it's just a little tiring to see the same comments over and over from Nintendo fans. As one myself, it makes us just look... desperate? Male dominated? You seem a bright guy, I'm sure you know what I'm getting at. No worries, I appreciate the thoughtful response, I expected to get flamed by everyone.

@HappyMaskedGuy Do I sense sarcasm? I thought my wiggling Shantae beside my name might give away that I'm no prude, this isn't about keeping people asexual! There's just a time and place, after all. I guess it is expected that the Nintendo fanbase is primarily young teenage boys, but still...

@Tlink7 ...I can actually see why the Breath of the Wild girl attracted so much attention, but that was almost... memetic rather than people just going "OMG A GURL". I give her bonus points for wearing that shirt and probably being well aware of the attention it might bring and (hopefully) not giving a monkeys.

Re: Fan-Made Title Pokémon Uranium Is Officially Dead

Aurelis

People trumpeting Sega as the savior of fan games need to remember that they shut down the Streets of Rage remake not too long ago, AND had a massive takedown of Youtube content as well. The only time they'll be trumpeting fan content is when it suits them, such as to help generate goodwill for the likes of Sonic Mania.

That all said, Nintendo's attitude seems to have changed towards fan games recently, although we should probably be thankful they allow them to get released at all. I worry that the reason these games are taken down is because they get media hype behind them, though.

One thing that also concerns me is while I think the likes of AM2R probably had minimal impact on Federation Force's sales and reception, I wonder that if people have had their fill of 2D Metroid for free that they may not pony up the cash for great games like Axiom Verge. And really, if you want to send Nintendo a message, ignoring Federation Force and buying Axiom Verge instead is what you should be doing.

As for Pokemon, that's a whole other thing, but in general, releasing a fan game while Nintendo is trying to promote it's own efforts in the same series is a bad idea. This is the only time that Nintendo really seems to take action, as we've seen with Metroid, Pokemon and all those Mario fan games (likely due to Super Mario Maker). Of course, whether Mother 4 gets taken down is going to be the true litmus test, although I fear calling it Mother 4 of all things is a bad, bad idea.

Like SmaMan said, UnderTale was borne from the ashes of an EarthBound hack. You can create something unique, original and amazing instead of using someone else's characters and artwork. And yes, pixel art is still art. Fangames are awesome, but if you have ambitions to top Nintendo's own attempts, why not show them how it's really done?

Re: Review: Adventure Labyrinth Story (3DS eShop)

Aurelis

Whatever might be wrong with this game, the character design sure isn't one of them, the main character is totally adorable and makes me want to play it even though this sort of game really isn't my thing. Props to the artist!

Re: Review: Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS)

Aurelis

@Shiryu Fair enough, just was replying to a previous comment you made where you seemed upset that NLG were getting a bad rap. No, people dislike the game's concept and the decisions that went behind it, nobody's really blaming NLG for what this game is.

Re: Review: Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS)

Aurelis

@VanillaLake Haha, unfortunately I actually enjoyed Star Fox Zero a lot. Again, I give it a lot of credit for actually BEING a Star Fox game. A proper Star Fox game. It's flawed, sure, and obviously the controls are not to everyone's liking (I found they took a bit of getting used to then they became a lot of fun, personally), but it IS a Star Fox game. Adventures was something else with Star Fox slapped on it.

I guess I'm much more forgiving with games that have ambitions to please fans, even if they fail at it.

Re: Review: Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS)

Aurelis

Never, ever fall for the "if they don't buy this game that you don't really like the look of then we'll stop making games in X franchise" line that people and sometimes publishers pull. It's a lie and always has been. If developers and publishers don't understand that a game sells badly because it's not what the fans want, then why would you even want their next game?

Sticker Star sold pretty well. Then we got Colour Splash! Yay?

Re: Review: Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS)

Aurelis

@Tlink7 I'm not sure Nintendo is THAT out of touch that they'd base the future of the franchise on the sales of a multiplayer spin off. Besides, with the reception this game got, they know hardcore Metroid fans exist. The anger for this game wouldn't exist if nobody cared about the series.

Re: Review: Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS)

Aurelis

@naut This is a fair point and I think people are justified in their hate (to a degree). Slapping the Metroid name on this is largely cynical and pointless. Complaining about this is the same as complaining about Star Fox Adventures, which is perfectly reasonable if you ask me. Personally I see a lot of similarities between both ventures.

I'm gonna open a can of worms here and say... whatever you think about the game itself, at least Other M was unashamedly a Metroid game, even if it got a lot of what it should be wrong, it was most definitely trying to be a Metroid game. This is trying to be something else, but with Metroid Prime trappings on top.

That said the music in that game sucked too. When Sonic 2006 happened, at least Sonic fans got a good soundtrack out of it, ugh.

Re: Review: Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS)

Aurelis

@Shiryu Your job is to review a game on it's merits, not defend a developer. I love Next Level Games and they've done fantastic work, but this review reads like an attempt to prop them up even when their work is bland. You even praised the music, which is nothing but trite garbage and I don't need to have played the full game to recognise that aspect.

I never thought this game would be awful because NLG make decent games, but in terms of visual design and music, it's as generic as you can get. Personally, in terms of gameplay I can't get over how slow the mechs are, either. It also seems like the game relies a lot on enemy hordes and bullet sponge bosses, but that's me going off footage.

Re: Retro-Bit's Next System Aims To Challenge The NES Classic Edition Mini Console

Aurelis

@Kirk Aside from the darkening, which seems like a stylistic choice probably partly TO get the colours more accurate, NES game colours are pretty damn spot on. Compare this https://youtu.be/wCda9Y_kN5Y?t=2m50s Virtual Console footage with actual NES footage of Donkey Kong, here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr-6j87tqcQ

Compared to emulated footage here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_PrG8P5W8o

Now, while the colours are sharper and brighter on the emulation, the aspect ratio is wrong, and due to the bright colours, Donkey Kong looks red rather than brown. While the VC version is not perfect, it is FAR closer to the original game than this example of emulation.

Of course, the issue here is that some people prefer the colours of the latter, and even games like NES Remix go for the sharper, brighter look. I am all for options and they should add them. However, the VC is not displaying the game "incorrectly", most emulators are actually immensely inconsistent with NES colours because there is no "correct" way to display them for some annoying technical reasons I don't quite follow myself.

Anyway, basically all I'm saying is that the VC is not doing it wrong, but it may not be doing it as you wish, and obviously having the options would be nice. In this instance, the actual arcade version of Donkey Kong did have a brighter palette than the NES, so it's an interesting example as it highlights the flaws of the NES hardware.

Re: Retro-Bit's Next System Aims To Challenge The NES Classic Edition Mini Console

Aurelis

@Kirk Late replying here, but I will say that as much as I understand it's an intentional thing on Nintendo's part (the Virtual Console as a concept was meant to emulate the original system, warts and all), options are obviously better, so having the choice to remove any filters would be ideal. They did it for the GBA emulation, so maybe they're slowly moving in that direction. Older stuff is basically directly ported from the Wii VC though, so yes, they're putting in a very bare minimum effort with that, sadly, aside from a few things like button remapping. It's slow but they are adding things bit by bit, including 60hz games for us poor PAL gamers, but hopefully it'll improve.

You also may be right about how the NES looked back in PAL land, my only experience of the original hardware is US footage, I sadly never owned one. SCART cables were a hell of a lot better but as far as I'm aware they weren't available in the US or Japan, I wasn't aware the original NES even used them, although I know the SNES of course did.

Re: Retro-Bit's Next System Aims To Challenge The NES Classic Edition Mini Console

Aurelis

@Kirk If you are basing quality solely around visual appearance rather than accuracy, you may be right. While the VC has some issues, in general the game accuracy levels are on the money. Also, the visual appearance of NES games IS actually closer in some respects to the original hardware. Emulators increase the contrast levels, adjust the ratio and the sharpened pixels were never how the games were originally meant to be seen. Although we are used to this due to emulation, I feel Nintendo's VC emulation is a design choice to better represent this. Look at old of NES games and they are all very dark and washed out compared to emulator footage. It also may have something to do with epilepsy stuff, and I have a theory it might be a legal thing to do it, which would explain why it's also present in N64 games (which is bizarre, I grant you). I could be wrong, however, but it's definitely a design choice rather than a mistake.

Certainly, legalities are likely the reason behind the lack of Super FX games. There are more legal issues behind the scenes with Virtual Console than we're aware of, I suspect, hence why the DKC games disappeared, and other games have been delisted, or never appeared at all (such as Contra).

Re: Retro-Bit's Next System Aims To Challenge The NES Classic Edition Mini Console

Aurelis

As always with these things, look for detailed reviews, videos and impressions. The Sega ones are dire and should be avoided at all costs, and the only reason I've preordered the Nintendo one is because I trust them to get the emulation right. As much as people complain about the Virtual Console sometimes, the actual accuracy of the emulation is rarely ever an issue and is usually far beyond third party knockoffs, so I expect the same from their mini box.

If anyone is unsure why people don't like Josh Thomas, just take a few moments to peruse this alternate twitter handle of his.

https://twitter.com/DarkJoshy

And no, it's not a parody. He can claim it's not meant to be taken 100% seriously but when he's proven himself to be an absolute tool on numerous other occasions, I find it hard to believe these are anything but his genuine opinions.

Re: The Legend of Zelda for Wii U Will Be The Only Playable Nintendo Game at E3

Aurelis

I think it's fairly obvious that the NX delay has caused this, of course... but what strikes me as odd is what about Paper Mario and Federation Force? Do they not want to mention them because that would just make things worse (given that they are both unpopular with the fanbase of each series)? Are they going to be there anyway? If not, why not? Lack of confidence in either title?

Aside from that, has EVERYTHING else been moved to the NX? Because I cannot believe that Nintendo wouldn't at least have one more 3DS game in the pipeline. Wii U support ends with Star Fox Zero and Zelda, sounds about right, especially given the touching Iwata tribute in SFZ. 3DS ends with Federation Force? Really? Isn't Kirby coming out before it, even? Very odd.

What bothers me the most is what the hell is the Mario team making these days? Treasure Tracker and SSM can't just be all they've been doing since 3D World. I guess they're 100% on whatever Mario NX is. Lets hope we at least see footage.

I figure we'll hear about the NX before the year is through. But this E3 is sounding rough. At least we get to see a lot of Zelda. I guess.

Re: Pokkén Tournament Update 1.2 Goes Live, to the Despair of Shadow Mewtwo Players

Aurelis

I was tempted to pick this game up at some point down the road, but if they've really gone and region locked the online then that's a big no no. You realize, Nintendo, that some of us Europeans have numerous friends in America? It's bad enough that in Splatoon I just get endless matches against Japanese players almost constantly because they never sleep.

Re: Nintendo Shuts Down Browser-Based '3D' Legend of Zelda Demo

Aurelis

To be fair to them, the game only had three dungeons completed. So it wasn't really a full recreation. But what was playable was very close to the original, and it could be misconstrued as officially licensed, which is usually the main issue.

Notice stuff like Konjak's Legend of Princess still exists and is playable, and that's basically a homage to Zelda without being Zelda (and is absolutely awesome, anyone reading this that hasn't played it MUST give it a go, it's short but fantastic).

Re: Video: The Entire Zelda Timeline Is Explained By Popular YouTube Theorists

Aurelis

As usual, a bunch of people who probably know diddly squat about the actual backstory of the games complaining about their being a timeline when it has been in existence as long as the second game in the series and when many of the major Zelda entries directly reference other Zelda titles.

It bemuses me how angry some people get about one existing. Yes, it's imperfect (due to Nintendo's gameplay-first focus and deciding to make OoT have like... four sequels), but it has always been there in some form or other.

Re: First 4 Figures Opens Pre-Orders on Awesome Star Fox Arwing Collectible

Aurelis

F4F always overcharges, but their more mechanical-themed figures tend to come out better than anything else, at least in pictures. That said, why is the engine light split into two parts like that? Seems like it'd look better as a single one to me.

Personally I preferred the SNES style Arwing, the SF64 version always looked stubby and stunted compared to the sleek original (both in artwork and in game) and a bit too covered in logos for my liking.
