So, trademarks aren't always a guarantee of something that'll actually happen, let's get that clear right off the bat. On the flipside, they're one of the more solid indicators of planned or upcoming projects; that's certainly the hope with a Nintendo filing spotted in Europe.
Filed today with EUIPO (the European Union Intellectual Property Office), directly by Nintendo through a German representative company, is a trademark for Wave Race.
This is an IP that's lain dormant - outside of knowing nods in minigames such as that in Wii Sports Resort - since Wave Race: Blue Storm. It'd certainly be welcome among older fans in particular, and could arguably be a smart (if relatively low-key, in the broad scheme of things) release for the upcoming Switch. We're getting well ahead of ourselves, of course, but it's nice to dream.

I would be interested. Waverace 64 was fun. Blue Storm's a.i. was kinda on the cheap side. But I'd check it out if Nintendo brought it back.

Cool, but if this is real I just don't see how Wave Race can be successful on its own in today's market. Without a pro license, it's going to be hard convincing most to play it.
I still think Nintendo should just bundle its outsider sports titles (1080, this, maybe Pilotwings, and possibly some leftovers from Wii Sports) together into one game, possibly open world but I'm dreaming.

Nintendo have a plentiful trademarks they don't use. It can be that they simply don't want other companies to use a title/name they have used on three games.

@KoopaTheGamer I'd rather see it being developed by either one of the teams that has already made a Wave Race game. This needs to be done right if it is actually going to be made.

The original, less-known game called simply "Wave Race" is a Game Boy-game and I'm highly doubtful it's on the Wii U eShop anywhere.

I agree that this, 1080, Pilotwings and maybe a Top Gear sequel should be bundled into one game because they're not quite enough to satisfy the modern gamer on their own.

If Nintendo don't think that full fat versions of Wave Race, F-Zero, 1080, Pilotwings, the Excite series will sell they need to get creative. A low-cost eshop download with extra tracks as DLC may be the way forward.

Judging from the enthusiasm in this comments section alone, it would be a wise choice for Nintendo to get WaveRace back on track.
I demand cutting edge water effects that have been built on an engine from the ground up. I also demand lots of imaginative tracks in beautiful, crazy locales and a nuanced, hard to master control scheme that rewards skillful players whilst also being welcoming to new players.
I want a REAL Wave Race Nintendo. Don't blow this.

@Robotron2084 how about something like Switch Extreme Sports. All based on or around Wuhu Island. Download the base game for free with tasters for Wave Race, 1080, Excite Bike, Sky diving, RedBull style plane races. Imagine snowboarding down Wuhu mountain side and racing excite bikes jump over the piste. Or a jet ski race on a mountain lake and racing planes flying over head through hoops. I am so up for this!
Then pay $10/£8 per sport to unlock the proper cups. And if it's successful more cups and even more sports could be added later with DLC

Not really. They included a lot of old courses, but it still feels like a new game. Though I agree with you, it should have had a lot more new things.
I think the GameCube was just an updated N64 for a lot of games and developers, to be honest.
