Super Mario Maker has had some quirky tie-ins for its Event Courses and unlockable costumes, but the latest perhaps takes the biscuit. Nintendo's Japanese social media channels have confirmed that BABYMETAL will be the next tie-in.
What's BABYMETAL? It's a Japanese rock band that consists of three young performers. Below are Nintendo's videos introducing them for the level's release on 28th April.
The level name, METAL RESISTANCE. is a promotion for the album of the same name. You can see a single from the album below, called KARATE.
Well, it sure is an interesting inclusion - assuming it also comes to the West - and could be fun regardless.

I love BABYMETAL. And LadyBaby.
Holy crap, a babymetal costume?! That's super weird and I like it.
OK....?
Aw yea, Babymetal! The new album is great!
Awesome!!!! Love Babymetal!
Getting more and more random....
Mario Maker: A Weeaboo's Dream Game. I kid, I kid. I am buying Fire Emblem magical singing time after all.
I hope we get dumb, random Western costumes like SpongeBob, Penn and Teller, and Daft Punk Robot to make up for all of the weeb Japanese costumes.
@Handy_Man lol those would all be really funny to see in a Mario game. It seems like Nintendo could do it too with how SpongeBob was in Splatoon somehow
ANOTHER All Japanese, japanese speaking character costume. Nintendo doesn't like to accept the fact that there is an entire world outside of Japan.
@NintenJoe You never know what they'll do in the future. I,however, think this is one of the coolest Super Mario Maker costumes released so far.
Meanwhile still waiting for new themes like Desert and Snow.
This makes me way happier than it should 😂
It's just costumes from here on out, might as well make the most of it.
Kid Niki, Secret Scout, Daydreamin Davey, Alex Kidd, Dr. Wily, Jason Voorhees... would be suffice.
It's only a matter of time until we can play as Keith Chegwin.
How strangely cool.
These are getting a bit absurd now
And yet Shovel Knight still doesn't have a costume...
No one's made this joke yet? Okay...
Super Mario METAL
Let's do a KISS set.
So when are we getting Mickey Mouse then?
Just earlier this month, Baby Metal made their U.S. TV debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Check it out in the video below:
Creepy, I was talking with my friends about them and their songs (mores genre) 2 hours ago, now I see them here top page as a Mario Maker Costume.
This day just keeps getting crazier.
Best part of this news is that they're doing more, I thought they were done with these! I'm always happy to get more costumes, as long as there's some decent ones hidden among the... stranger, entries.
And yes, by decent, I mean Shantae and Shovel Knight. Obviously.
for people who like this kind of stuf, search ladybaby on youtube.its metal with cute girl and a crossdressing wresteler.great stuff
Best Nintendo news today. Also, are people actually complaining a Japanese company is adding Japanese media into their Japanese game?
So when is Nintendo going to allow for the change in background music, because this seems to be the perfect opportunity to do so!
The ability to have at least one alternate music track per (course) environment/sub-world environment style would be nice. So would a pipe that can lead to another pipe on the same level/sub-level, & the ability to have the course rocking movement on non-airship courses. Oh yes, & water for ground, & slopes.
Edit: After watching the video, I'm unimpressed. Oh well, not every costume will reference something I know, or like. & it *is Japanese media being put into a Japanese game, as @EdJericho above mentioned. Edit #2: I would have liked it better if the costume came with a different flagpole jingle. I can better respect the use of the generic flagpole jingle, if the group were asked, & opted to use that jingle, instead of something specific to that costume. Makes me wonder if future costumes will lack special death/victory jingles?
Hopefully there'll be UK specific costumes like Mr Blobby or Gregg Wallace from Masterchef.
Gimme Chocolate!
I'm okay that we're getting these, but they've added a lot of things either only Japanese people or weebs would know, and even weebs are like ??? sometimes. But whatever.
What? No Radiohead costume? ^^
This is Still a pretty cool costume, but like many other i have no idea who these are, but i figure there popular band in japan with the name "Metal" in it.
My life is now complete!!
Perfume has advertised for video games as well Nintendo! They even did an Ending song for the Starfy Anime! Get on it!
Edit: Are martial arts themed PVs a thing now? Perfume did something similar earlier with Flash (name of the song, not the superhero).
OOKIE WOOKIE MIDNIIIIIIGHT!
This is nothing short of very awesome
UGH. Babymetal is everywhere in Japan these days. They're one of the headliners of the 2nd biggest rock festival in Japan (which I attend every year), which USED to feature the best non-mainstream music in Japan, but is slowly getting more and more commercialized every year. I don't get why people find them so interesting... they're just another heavily-marketed and over-produced girl idol group with a slightly different gimmick than all the others. If they played their own instruments then MAYBE I'd consider them to be vaguely interesting (though I have as little interest in metal as I do in idol groups). And now Nintendo is putting them into Mario Maker. UGH again. Oh well, I guess it's hard to blame them... it's not like Nintendo has a single character left in their entire catalog of games that isn't already in Mario Maker, right???
But like, what did they do to get in? Why a thing completely not gaming or Nintendo, when they ignore so many Nintendo character's?
Why BabyMetal? And not Shinee, or a Jojo character? They're much hella popular.
I must be informed the moment that someone creates an automatic level capable of playing Gimme Chocolate.
