Perfect. Now this will dominate discussion about these remasters forever online.

Anyway, this sort of censorship isn't ideal in the best of circumstances, but especially when it happens in a post-launch patch, after the people most excited for it have already parted with their money.

Some will say it doesn't matter because it's purely cosmetic, but these same people wouldn't react this way if it was, say, a pride flag being removed, y'know?

@DestructoDisk I get the reason for them to “exist” during a consoles lifetime for working on them, but they don’t need to be made public. If you’d created something to sell and someone copied it and suddenly your sales started to take a nose dive you’d be pretty upset too.

Backing up saves can be done without the use of an emulator, granted on switch you have to pay for online service for it whereas on Xbox, Ps and Pc it’s free. Backing up the full game isn’t going to be necessary within the consoles lifespan, if your game craps out during that time Nintendo will replace it.

The only real caveat anyone using an emulator to play switch games currently right now is “it runs better on emu therefore I should play it there”. And that argument is like “I have a Ferrari so I should be able to drive it 200mph just because it can”. It’s a child’s argument at best.

I truly am all for emu, and preserving data, but a full on emu doesn’t really need to be public during a consoles lifespan.

And you do realize that the legality of dumping your data does don’t include playing it back on unintended hardware correct? The law was created for the express use of backing up data to replace it back on to disc should the original disc get destroyed.

Edit - Emu debate is a lot like the American gun debates that pop up. Every time something bad happens, the ban gets brought up. And while I’m a responsible owner, I also agree with Jim Jefferies, we only have one valid arguement - “I like my guns, I wanna keep em”. Self defense isn’t a valid reason because statistically speaking your more likely to use the gun on yourself than a home invader, and your reaction time plus adrenaline are likely to counter any would be thwarting of the home invasion. And the amendment was created just in case our government got crappy and we could defend ourselves, however the technological gap between us and the military is vast, and the only way we’d win against the military is if they decided not to fight.

I bring this up as a point out to people doing dumb things ruining it for the rest of us. Emu is no different. If people do dumb things with it, like yuzu did, then it’s only going to increase the resolve companies have to prevent it from happening. Soon we’ll see DRM in all games, and the back ups won’t matter a lick unless you can connect to the server with a valid account ownership of the game. If we want to speed that process up then by all means, we just need to keep doing stupid things…..

But I digress, again I’m all for preservation and emu. I’m just pointing out the technicalities. I’ve been backing up my data since 1987 when Leisure Suit Larry originally released on floppy disc….

One the one hand, it's just a load of triangles that's meant to look like a sexy woman. On the other hand, it's the thin end of the wedge, and one that we've seen too many times. Ten years ago I'd have been annoyed at this; now it's just inevitable. What bothers me more, stepping back and seeing the bigger picture, is that so many people are connected to a hive mind now. You'll probably find a correlation between people who use terms like "male gaze" and those who have supported all the other authoritarian measures and gradual erosion of freedom we've seen this century. Oh, to taste the '80s and '90s again...

Even with the resurgence of Sokoban games in the indie scene as of late, I really don't think Mole Mania's coming back outside of an NSO re-release. It's not like it's conspicuously absent the way Super Mario RPG was for years, given the relative recency of Game Boy being added to the service. I do hope we get to see it on NSO soon, though. I think if anything from the Game Boy back catalogue gets remade at this point, it'll probably be The Frog for Whom the Bell Tolls, since that would at least have an incentive of localization going for it.

I think it's totally relevant in a conversation about how women are portrayed in media. Because I think worries of sexism is the #1 reason for the removal of the images, and if we don't want to see women exploited and objectified, we might aught to look more broadly at the multi-billion-dollar p*rn industry and how it's skewed our perception on these sorts of things.

Now, I don't really agree with his points about parenting. The game is rated Mature, so I don't think it was a matter of parents complaining, because that's literally what age rating on the box is for. The existence of p*rn also doesn't mean parents shouldn't try to monitor the media their kids consume just because it's not as bad. It's like saying, "Why stop my kids from trying meth when bath salts exist and those are worse?"

So I guess what I'm saying is that I think the state of the p*rn industry is very much a conversation worth having, albeit maybe not necessarily for the reasons brought up by the OP. There's still something of value that can be gleamed from it.

I knew I'd see Balloon Kid and Mole Mania in here.

Apparently the character of Lulu from WarioWare is based on Alice from Balloon Kid. If so, that's a nice nod to the character.

It's also important to note that Baloon Kid had a Famicom version in the form of Hello Kitty World (which is literally just a sprite swap of Alice and her brother, most of the enemies I believe are intact) and the Japanese version wasn't released until 1998 as a Game Boy Color game known as Balloon Fight GB via Nintendo Power.

Hopefully we can one day get them along with X, Wave Race (yes, the original GB game), Kid Icarus: Of Myth and Monsters and Pokémon Puzzle Challenge on NSO.

Yeah its unfortunate that the performance issues and whatnot are so bad because all the other stuff sounds appealing but technical issues sound like they run deep throughout the game which makes me curious if its the kind of thing which could even be fixed with a patch.

while more powerful hardware isnt a magic-bullet, to be fair the same could be said about optimisation it feels like there is often some meeting halfway to be done and while there are apparently some issues on other platforms theres a difference between stutters and a game rarely even hitting 30fps like the review mentions.

Would prefer it if they left everything alone. I wasn't buying it with the expectation that it would be modern, appropriate, or in any way tasteful.

-but I also don't care that much. Mainly not a fan of games getting altered after I've bought them. I know they're legally allowed to but I don't like the reminder. Some illusion that I "own" my purchases would be nice.

Great Greed and Cattrap are excellent choices. Particularly Great Greed, which is so obscure, it was never released on the Virtual Console.
But let's go deeper!

Shout out to Kingdom Crusade , a very forgotten 1992 action game from Electro Brain. It is this strange hybrid of early RTS with unit placement gameplay, supplemented by an interesting cat-and-mouse action combat, with various character classes. Fun for single player, and a treat for 2 player versus too.

Another recommendation from left field: Konami's God Medicine from 1993. Originally a Japan only release, that has a lovely english fan translation in the modern day. A solid JRPG with a lot of audio-visual charm, and a very memorable setting of being a game within a game (which was particularly new and interesting in the genre at the time!).

@PinderSchloss on pure xbox they said

On a more negative note, we did mention a few performance issues earlier, and these come in the form of a sound issue that seems to mute the game entirely if you use Quick Resume (something that's only resolved by a restart in our experience), and some very mild stuttering on rare occasions. Nothing major, then, but that sound problem especially is worth pointing out as it can become frustrating.

@Not_Soos "Whataboutism" is called out specifically because it's overall irrelevant to the topic. What the claimant is usually trying to do is make an argument that their opponent is a hypocrite - e.g. "Oh, you have an issue with X, but you're completely okay with Y and it's JUST as bad for these reasons".
It's not a point that's completely without merit in the correct scenario but MOST of the time it's used to deflect from the topic at hand, usually because the claimant doesn't have a better argument and refuses to engage with it.

Instead of whataboutisms it's better to use hypotheticals to try and bridge a gap between you and your opponent's ideals... but from what I've seen on online debates, people rarely engage with hypotheticals, ergo they resort to the more antagonistic (and ultimately irrelevant) whataboutism to try to make the opposing side an enemy as quickly as possible.

Indeed, this chipping away at past works and antagonizing the fanbase with "updated narratives" are problems that will always have to be fought back by passionate fans. Censorship is all about control at the end of the day. Control of the narrative, control of morality, control of thought. Few powers have ever resisted the temptations of censorship when they see how it can benefit them, never give them an inch and always fight for your freedoms no matter how trivial.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (20th April)

Ryne-Gaia

Alrighty here we go with another WAYP. Gonna be a real busy one this week with everything that’s occurred and everything upcoming this week. Who told the last week of April to be so packed????? Anywho here we go with a packed week of some Dragons Dogma 2 and the FFXVI DLC The Rising Tide as well as some more Princess Peach Showtime and AI: The Somnium Files. AI in particular is just absolutely excellent. Also snagged a bunch of good sales this week like Suicide Squad and Hollow Knight. Even some preorders like Endless Ocean: Luminous and Little Kitty Big City. Even snagged WWE 2K23 for cheap to get some wrestling love going. We love Rhea Ripley. As for this weekend I dabbled in some of the Splatoon 3 Springfest and some WWE 2K23 and the rest of the weekend I’m thinking some Trails Into Reverie and some Persona 3 Reload. Loving both of those games too they’re really exciting RPGs. As for the week ahead oh boi we got a busy one we talking Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes, Tales of Kenzaura: Zau, Saga Emerald Beyond, the Fallout 4 PS5 upgrade, the Knuckles show, the full Persona 3 Reload OST on Spotify, and the crown jewel of the week Stellar Blade. To say I’m excited is a bit of a understatement because I am positively hype. Of course I’ll be working with all those games on Switch and PS5 and others already listed like Suicide Squad but I’ve of course still got other ones I’m looking to put more time into as well like Pepper Grinder, Another Code, Mario Vs Donkey Kong, FFVII Rebirth and probably many more I’m already forgetting hahaha. Anime this week are gonna be a shout-out to the standouts of the Winter season before next week we pick out our Spring ones. Those of course being Witch and the Beast, High Card, Metallic Rouge, Shangri-La Frontier, Undead Unluck, Delicious in Dungeon, and my GOAT URUSEI YATSURA. Also might get to go on a ooting this week and get to see the new Spy X Family: Code White Movie. Also in terms of shows I’m gonna try to focus on Twisted Metal and FALLOUT and of course Knuckles. As for podcasts of the week I gotta give it to my usual favorites like Castle Superbeast, Big Think Dimension, Into the Aether, RPGsites Tetracast, Remap Radio, Minnmax, Windbreak and Firelink and just like the games probably so many more that I’ve forgotten. With how my jobs getting with morning shifts I’m getting to cash in on those GOTY podcasts. Don’t think I mentioned this here but I also completed the full smash bros set of amiibos a week or two ago. Extremity proud of it. And of course we gotta give a lovely shoutout to my good friend over at twitch.tv/akibread and their stupendous stunning streams. As always y’all stay safe and be good to each other. Have a great rest of the weekend and week, And Happy Gaming.
