The Best Cheap Games On The Nintendo Switch eShop

Here's our pick of the top 5 best deals for cheap games on the Switch eShop right now:

Night Trap - 25th Anniversary Edition (Switch eShop)

Night Trap - 25th Anniversary Edition (Switch eShop)Night Trap - 25th Anniversary Edition (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Limited Run Games / Developer: Screaming Villains
Release Date: 24th Aug 2018 (USA) / 24th Aug 2018 (UK/EU)

90% off - was $14.99, now $1.49 until 1st Jun 2020

If you have no interest in retro gaming and aren’t willing to look past its limitations, Night Trap’s repetitive nature is likely to confuse and irritate you. Come at it with an open mind and an enthusiasm to discover (or relive) the brief period when we all foolishly thought FMV was the future, and you’ll find a charmingly silly game accompanied by a host of wonderful features that elevate it to more than just a remaster, but a digital museum piece commemorating a unique time in gaming history.

Horizon Chase Turbo (Switch eShop)

Horizon Chase Turbo (Switch eShop)Horizon Chase Turbo (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Aquiris / Developer: Aquiris
Release Date: 28th Nov 2018 (USA) / 28th Nov 2018 (UK/EU)

70% off - was $19,99, now $5,99 until 5th Jun 2020

If you’ve been craving an arcade racer for your Switch, look no further. Horizon Chase Turbo is a hugely enjoyable love letter to a gaming era when the cars were fast, the music was catchy, the action was smooth and the sky was bluer than an Eddie Murphy stand-up routine. Its enormous selection of tracks, addictive World Tour mode and excellent local multiplayer make it an absolute must-have for anyone even remotely interested in the genre.

Mechstermination Force (Switch eShop)

Mechstermination Force (Switch eShop)Mechstermination Force (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Horberg Productions / Developer: Horberg Productions
Release Date: 3rd Apr 2019 (USA) / 4th Apr 2019 (UK/EU)

25% off - was $11,99, now $8,99 until 11th Jun 2020

While certainly less of a head-turner than something like Cuphead (which released in close proximity to this), Mechstermination Force is a more approachable take on boss rush platforming, with less of an emphasis on twitch-based, pixel-perfect precision. The game is peppered with ingenious design and amusing writing and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with it. We'd recommend it as a more accessible alternative to (or appetiser for) Studio MDHR’s game. If you enjoyed Gunman Clive, this is a great expansion on the concept and well worth investigating.

Mega Man Legacy Collection (Switch eShop)

Mega Man Legacy Collection (Switch eShop)Mega Man Legacy Collection (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom
Release Date: 22nd May 2018 (USA) / 22nd May 2018 (UK/EU)

34% off - was $14,99, now $9,89 until 1st Jun 2020

Digital Eclipse did a great job with all the details in Mega Man Legacy Collection, presenting the original games in their best possible light, while tossing in a handful of extra features and challenges on top to sweeten the deal. The rewind feature is a welcome inclusion that helps to mitigate the difficulty of some of the games, and the overall quality of the series difficult to dispute. We would highly recommend you pick this one up - all the included extra features coupled with the ability to play these games both at home and on the go make it a no-brainer.

Mega Man X Legacy Collection (Switch eShop)

Mega Man X Legacy Collection (Switch eShop)Mega Man X Legacy Collection (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom
Release Date: 24th Jul 2018 (USA) / 24th Jul 2018 (UK/EU)

50% off - was $19.99, now $9.99 until 1st Jun 2020

And if you like your Mega Men with a slightly more modern flavour (slightly, mind), Mega Man X Legacy Collection is a fantastic re-release of several must-play gaming classics, presenting them as authentically as possible while still including a few modern features on top that help to improve the overall experience and keep it from feeling antiquated. Throw in the new X Challenge mode and an enormous archive of museum content and this stands as the definitive way to play the Mega Man X games in the modern era. Four fantastic games, a bevy of extra content, and the ability to play at home or on the go make this one an easy recommendation.

And with the growing trend of games plummeting to mere cents, here's our sub-$1 pick for a super cheap game that's worth the memory space it takes up on your Switch...

Saturday Morning RPG (Switch eShop)

Saturday Morning RPG (Switch eShop)Saturday Morning RPG (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Limited Run Games / Developer: Mighty Rabbit Studios
Release Date: 26th Apr 2018 (USA) / 26th Apr 2018 (UK/EU)

90% off - was $9.99, now $0.99 until 1st Jun 2020

As a loving tribute to JRPGs and '80s pop culture, Saturday Morning RPG has rough edges a-plenty and even more bright ideas. It can frustrate and baffle, particularly if you're not au fait with the period, but it's always keen to invite you into its world.

Aaand because the eShop is overflowing with incredibly cheap games at the time of writing, here are a few more sub-$1 games you might want to investigate before they're gone...

Hyper Sentinel (Switch eShop)

Hyper Sentinel (Switch eShop)Hyper Sentinel (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Huey Games / Developer: Four5Six Pixel
Release Date: 11th May 2018 (USA) / 11th May 2018 (UK/EU)

98% off - was $7.99, now $0.15 until 29th May 2020

Hyper Sentinel is 'neo-retro' executed to perfection. Once you accept that the visual and audio directions are both design choices made to pay tribute to the original Commodore 64 game and sit down to take on your first Super-Dreadnought, you’ll be hooked. Every time you get a 'Game Over', the only thing on your mind will be on how to prevent whatever got the best of you in preparation of your next sortie (while, at the same, time browsing the leaderboards to see how your friends are faring in each level).

A Duel Hand Disaster: Trackher (Switch eShop)

A Duel Hand Disaster: Trackher (Switch eShop)A Duel Hand Disaster: Trackher (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Ask An Enemy Studios / Developer: Ask An Enemy Studios
Release Date: 10th Jun 2019 (USA) / 3rd Sep 2019 (UK/EU)

99% off - was $9.99, now $0.09 until 29th May 2020

A Duel Hand Disaster: Trackher is a decent arcade title that introduces a unique spin on the genre. It’s got a good amount of depth, looks the part, and has a pretty funky soundtrack to boot. We can’t stress this enough, though – if you’re thinking of picking it up, do yourself a favour and watch the tutorial first.

VSR: Void Space Racing (Switch eShop)

VSR: Void Space Racing (Switch eShop)VSR: Void Space Racing (Switch eShop)
Publisher: SONKA / Developer: SONKA
Release Date: 20th Jul 2018 (USA) / 20th Jul 2018 (UK/EU)

92% off - was $4.99, now $0.39 until 11th Jun 2020

VSR: Void Space Racing is a surprising, one-of-a-kind racing game that finds itself very welcome in the Switch library. There is simply nothing quite like it; you're wrestling with raw physics as much as your rival racers, and the overall experience is brutal yet incredibly rewarding. Be prepared to swallow your pride in the first few sessions - during which you will be nothing short of a space pinball - and then aim for the stars.

The Way Remastered (Switch eShop)

The Way Remastered (Switch eShop)The Way Remastered (Switch eShop)
Publisher: SONKA / Developer: SONKA
Release Date: 20th Apr 2018 (USA) / 20th Apr 2018 (UK/EU)

93% off - was $14.99, now $0.99 until 11th Jun 2020

The Way Remastered is a faithful homage to the old Delphine Software titles that inspired it and players should expect no more or less. It’s a poignant story with beautiful visuals and intricate puzzles, but your enjoyment will depend very much on your temperament and your affection for those cinematic platformers of old. Provided you’re comfortable with its slow, cerebral pace and can overlook the stiff remnants of its influences, there is much to enjoy here.

Flashback (Switch)

Flashback (Switch)Flashback (Switch)
Publisher: Microids / Developer: Paul Cuisset
Release Date: 17th Jun 2018 (USA) / 19th Jun 2018 (UK/EU)

95% off - was $19.99, now $0.99 until 3rd Jun 2020

And while we're on the subject of cinematic platformers! Flashback on Switch is the definitive edition of a truly special science fiction platform/puzzle solving/shooting video game that already more than proved itself to be a 16-bit classic. If you were too young to play this the first time, this package will give you the best possible way to experience it with current hardware. For veteran gamers, Flashback has lost nothing of what made it special all those years ago. Pass the holocube, please.

Revenge of the Bird King (Switch eShop)

Revenge of the Bird King (Switch eShop)Revenge of the Bird King (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Limited Run Games / Developer: M7 Games
Release Date: 27th Dec 2018 (USA)

99% off - was $4.99, now $0.01 until 1st Jun 2020

A zany, retro-inspired platformer (and one that, unfortunately, we didn't have time to review), for one single cent we'd wager that Revenge of the Bird King is worth the memory space on your Switch.

"50% bird, 50% man, 100% ridiculous" reads the tag. That's got to be worth the asking price, no?
