After the new Animal Crossing game launches next week, what's on the horizon for Nintendo? While it's hard to predict, one upcoming Switch title that does seem like it will be arriving very soon is Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition.
Following on from ratings in both North America and South Korea last month, new listings for the game have now popped up on the Switch eShop in both Europe and Australia. This follows on from a listing on the North American eShop a few weeks ago (thanks, GoNintendo).
While the planned release date is still down as '2020' it seems like the game is pretty much ready to go at this point. In fact, not long ago, a Danish retailer with a known history of listing release dates ahead of schedule updated the game page for this title to a 29th May launch.
Do you think we'll be playing this Definitive Edition within the next few months? Share your thoughts below.

I hardly played the New 3DS version (I think I put a few hours into it, and was really, really impressed), and I have both physical Xenoblade Chronicles 2 games, but I was reluctant to play them to any length without at least seeing XC1 to the credits.
I can never seem to commit to these lengthy sorts of experiences unless it conforms to a tried and true formula that i am already familiar with (such as the Pokémon games).
sigh Another monstrously lengthy game to add to the burgeoning backlog.
It feels like an info drop is close!!
Please just release another trailer or some artwork already. I want to see the whole gang's new artstyle
This is the only game coming out this year that I care about, and that's ok. Gib us new info please!
I'm gonna kill so many brogs.
Holy crap, yes. The 'Blade was among the greatest games the Wii ever had, and I will gladly pick it up again. I just hope switching (pun not intended) between party members isn't mapped the D-pad this time, so we can actually change dudes while moving. One of the reasons I always played with the Remote and 'Chuck instead of the Classic Controller.
NOW IT’S REYN TIME
Animal Crossing and Rocket League are all I need for years to come. Too bad RL on switch has such terrible input lag that they never address. So i have to place on PC.
Once I have this game and Animal Crossing and the Pokemon DLC, I'm pretty much set for a long, long long time.
Which is good, since the world might be ending.
Best rpg ever made, and I'm really feeling it. Which is a plus.
For those who haven't yet played this game, I think it's almost a sin not to try it out when this definitive version releases. With its updated visual and added content (as well as probably some other improvements), seriously. Play it.
I held a very "meh" opinion on JRPGs, as most of them didn't grasp me much. That opinion very much changed after I delved into the world of Xenoblade. This game is beautiful inside out.
I never finished this one... things kept happening to get in the way.
@Silly_G try getting into Xenoblade. I sunk in a lot of time into the 3DS version but it was time well spent. The story is amazing.
I normally avoid most very long JRPGs barring the best of the best. Which means I'll definitely be seeking this one out. Heck, I want to preorder it, which isn't something I do often!
Definitely getting it at some point, but I might wait for a discount since I have enough to keep me busy in the meantime.
I'm FEELING the Release!
@Stu13 What about Gogols? You can't play Xenoblade without massacring Gogols.
My most anticipated release this year. 29th of May would be perfect, as I'm free from work that day.
Here’s hoping for a Nintendo Direct in the very near future to give us all the juicy juicy details.
@Silly_G you can play 2 without playing 1.
I actually think 2 is the better game, but I'm excited to see what improvements they've made.
................................Direct? Please?
I tried to like FF7, really I did. I'm not surprised they are having to remake it. It was laborious! (6 is miles better!). Xenoblade Chronicles is my fave RPG ever made, I'm chuffed they are adding more to it!
I played the entire thing through the new 3DS Screen.
Great game, horrible headache afterwards.
THIS is the game that got me into RPGs...I usually avoid those, I just don't have the time to invest in them...but playing Xenoblade on the Wii...that was one of the best summers of my life and naturally, I fell in love with the series. While I am unsure if I'll sit down and replay it anytime soon, if they give me a nice CE with a thick artbook, I'll definitely buy this version as well!
Sounds good, would appreciate a demo or maybe a weekend go for Online subscribers like they did with arms, tennis and fire emblem warriors - I'd like to be able to check out controls before taking the plunge!
Can't wait. Best JRPG of the last decade.
Releases after the direct
@Varkster Huh? They are adding content? I just cross checked all news here any can't find a single clue about monolith adding new content. New visuals, sure, content, where? Would you mind pointing me there?
So far I have no plans to buy it a second time as I bought it in Wii bundled with the red classic controller. If there is no new content this game will be very low on my list. It's awesome and you can sink hours in it! But I have a big back log (just started Switcher, still have three houses, tales of vesperia, diablo...). Who ever missed this game on Wii or 3DS should take the chance now!
@mazzel In the trailer it "hints" at them adding cut content in the end. There's a reason why they put a 10 second area view in the end. I believe it's supposedly the cut area from the final product in the Wii version. I think it's the Bionis Shoulder.
If you add that kind of content back to your game I suppose they will expand on it.
@nessisonett I'm really feeling it!
No more heroes 3 too! Or was that one already on the eshop?
I want it I want it I want it I WANT IT !!!!! I WANT IT NOW !!!
I pratically bought a Switch just for this freaking game ! Come on, Nintendo, give us a date ! xD
Is there any info on improvements to the game in terms of quest tracking? I found that to become a real chore, to say the least of it, in the original game quite rapidly. It kinda sucked the joy out of it for me tbh. To much stuff to keep track of - at least for me at the time.
It came down to it either being a chore or just ignoring a bunch of it altogether. I rarely ask for more "handholding", but as far as this goes ... yeah, more handholding plz.
Can't wait to have an updated versión of Xenoblade Chronicles X.
The most evasive experience I've had ever. Missing Mira that much!
@Heavyarms55 that your assumption is very bad.. the world isn't ending and stop being negative and spreading asinine comments cause it's not funny. Just buy & enjoy your game than saying that.
Cool. Just don’t know when I’m gonna fit this one in 😫
If it is a full priced £50 download only then No, I won't be playing it anytime soon.
Quote: After the new Animal Crossing game launches next week, what's on the horizon for Nintendo?
And for those that don't play AC, what's on the horizon since Luigi's mansion?
@Silly_G chances are your burgeoning backlog doesn't hold a candle to mine. Even among Switch RPGs alone, the latter has been cycling through tangible playtimes in Skyrim and Fire Emblem Warriors, World of Final Fantasy and FFXII, Bloodstained and Dragon Quest Builders, Valkyria Chronicles and Disgaea, Nelke and Dark Souls, Starlink and Pokemon Sword... and more recently, Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Xenoblade 2 and Rune Factory 4. Again, that's ONE of the genres on ONE of my platforms. Do not send help, I'm past salvation.😆
And yes, by now I'm 100% certain I'll double-dip with XC1 and restart it despite my own "quite a few" (read: almost 76😅) hours in the 3DS save file. Told you I'm past salvation.
@zool I'm not sure why it would be a download-only title when none of the previous Xenoblade releases ever was.
"And for those that don't play AC, what's on the horizon since Luigi's mansion?"
looks back at the release calendar um, dozens to hundreds of games in other genres since? Unless we're discussing people with the "Switch for Nintendo games alone" mentality (although even first party lineup has included quite a handful of meaty titles that have nothing to do with Luigi), but it's that much harder to take them seriously when your own library is over 300 games and barely 5% of it is first/second party ones.😅
I have twice put over 40 hours into this game and never beat it. Same for the Wii U xenoblade. Great bands, but I just can’t find time to actually finish them.
@Ralek85 I'm with you there. XC1 had me combing every corner of each town (each beautiful, gigantic town) after every story beat and even after every side quest, to see where the next NPC with an exclamation point is hiding. And you had to do it twice, in daytime and night time! And if you did have a hint, it was something along the lines of "talk to Miku"... It's like, who is that one again? Where do they hang out? Perhaps they are standing somewhere else for the purpose of this vignette?
Utterly loved that game but 75% of it is hunting for needles in haystacks.
@N64-ROX Precisely! If I remember correctly some of it even tied to weather conditions. It was kinda insane really :-/
Game was great otherwise, but this was a huge chunck of it, as you say, and it was annoying. Therefore never really managed to finish it, sadly
Somewhat interested in seeing what else aside from the character models has been changed and/or improved. :3
I’m not like others on here saying Nintendo has nothing to show this year just cause it’s March, however, once Animal Crossing drops next week, we have absolutely no idea what’s next for the Switch. It’s in Nintendo’s best interest to release some info very, very soon.
If Xenoblade is indeed coming in May, or close to it, they need to let people know sooner, rather than later.
I'm probably the only person who doesn't believe the 26th of March Direct roumor I really think Nintendo will drop a few game trailers on YouTube before the end of March and that's it then they possibly do the Direct hopefully next month
@nhSnork yes I forgot to say just physical games. I very rarely download games.
Having said that I have been thinking about Dragons Dogma since it's on offer. Can't decide as it's had some mixed reviews.
@KBuckley27 With a new PS and Xbox due this year I think Nintendo is holding back on keeping us up to date. Either we will have a Switch Pro release this year, and Nintendo is keeping its new releases for then, or if there is no Pro then the new releases will be needed to stop gamers trading their Switches for a PS5 or XboxX.
@zool Nintendo stated at their investors meeting that there are no plans for new hardware in 2020. They were actually specific about that, not the usual vague statement when they're hiding something as of yet unrevealed, so that makes me think it has credence.
That doesn't mean they aren't deep into working on one, just that 2020 isn't the plan for it.
@zool there is nothing Nintendo can do that will stop people from going to buy ether a PS5 or Series X if people are set on next gen consoles then that is what they will buy
Day 1 buy for me.
@mazzel the bionis shoulder that got cut in the original is in the trailer.
Amazing game but there is no doubt Nintendo fill be greedy and charge full price as always. Makes it an immediate no. Should be $40 max
You mean Nintendo Switch has games after Animal Crossing? Surely that's not true otherwise we'd have had a Direct by now
But seriously I'll be glad once Animal Crossing is released so Nintendo has to announce info about Switch's future. Animal Crossing and Smash have both allowed Nintendo to be silent for long time periods.
@KBuckley27 if a new Switch, Pro version, is released with some must have new games at roughly the same time or before the other console, that could be a deal breaker.
Loved the original, put 100+ hrs to the end. Would gladly play again if the graphics receive a significant update and offer new regions to explore. The journeying through the wilderness made the game as well as the story.
This game is so underrated for being a Nintendo exclusive. It's on the same league as legendary JRPG such as Final Fantasy 7, Persona 5 or Dragon Quest 8 for me.
@earthinheritor Or maybe Monolith Soft just want to make sure they get paid for their efforts considering they're literally building the game from the ground up in a completely different engine (from the looks of it, the XC2 engine). This isn't a simple upscaled port from Wii to Switch, because the engine used for the Wii Xenoblade game doesnt allow for HD. Plus they're adding at least one new area. It isn't greed as much as it is compensation for the amount of work that's being done.
@zool No one is trading switches in for ps5 and Xbox X. They aren't competing with each other.
@earthinheritor they didn’t just bump the resolution up and add some new lighting to the game, they had to recreate it with an entirely new engine. They’ve added at least one new area the bionis shoulder and there’s no telling what else they’ve done to improve the game.
Do we have any idea how much the pandemic is affecting this? Is Nintendo having people work from home, possibly with reduced productivity? Are national ratings/censorship boards that haven’t rated the game still active? Is the supply line to produce physical copies still in operation?
@earthinheritor why just $40?
I bought a used Wii copy in 2014 for the then-bargain price of $85, and that was some of the best money I’ve ever spent.
@Trajan of course they are. Why do a lot of gamers have more than one console?
@zool You just contradicted yourself.
@Varkster Thanks, I didn't notice that! I mean, it's around 8 yeara ago that I beat that game
Let's see how much content it will be and if it's enough to double dip!
@GrandScribe Thanks, I didn't notice!
I love Blade 1, probably more than Blade 2 overall, but I do think 2 improved the battle system. That said, easily the best rpg series out of Japan since the glory days of FF and maybe the underrated Lost Odyssey.
Unlike other people i sank 30+ plus hours into this game on 3ds not wii sadly. But intill i got stuck on some bit where i didn't know how to progress the story i loved it i loved it more than any other xenoblade game. (I haven't played torna though and could buy that if my itch scratches to hard). I loved the sword that could predict the future in battle and i had a love/hate thing with one really hard boss who if you didn't know the topple thing, could completly destroy you in like 5 seconds. I be buying this for sure. and hopefully this time i be able to figure out that part i was stuck on for so long ago. Or more than likely scour the internet for hints on that part he he.
@Silly_G you can get just as much out of xenoblade 1 and 2 regardles of which order you play them in, so don't be worried about that
@Rpg-lover Looks like someone doesn't understand sarcasm.
@Trajan well you would need to show where otherwise it doesn't count 😮
@riki_sidekicks Maybe more than $40 then, make it $50. $85 was only because it was a limited run game and went out of print so it became a collector's item . It was an artificial price jump that's all.
But it's just a HD remaster with a few extras like all the others they keep shoving in the Switch. Nintendo just gouges for HD remakes.
Look at Super Mario and Luigi. They did nothing to it..just ported it..and that was still full price. It's just what Nintendo does.
Don't get me wrong the game is fantastic but Nintendo constant HD ports at full price is against everything else in the industry.
@dBackLash it's a Nintendo exclusive. Don't expect a discount at all on this title.
Advice please!
I have never played any Xenoblade games.
Where do I start? Does it matter what order? Will only be playing them on Switch.
Thanks!
I don’t know if I want this. I already have it for my 3DS. I tried it but didn’t like the gameplay. I bought the complete edition of Chronicles 2 on Switch (part of my “auto buy everything made by good devs in order to support them” routine) but never enjoyed the gameplay in that either. What is it with these auto-fighting games coming from japan. How did menu based strategy batting games like Final Fantasy and other JRPG stalwarts evolve into “just stand near a bad guy and have the computer fight for you”. It’s zero fun.
@mazzel Bionis Shoulder wasnt in the original so thats NEW content if you want to get technical.
@Mynameishello I think you see the battle system from a completely wrong perspective! For both, 1 and 2!
Actually, the auto fight makes the whole atmosphere more dynamic instead of static like a classic final fantasy. You can see the auto fight as a way to fill up your attack gauge. If you just auto fight you have no chance against higher lvl enemies. The auto fight just enables you to either start your special attack (1) or start a chain (2). Once you get the grip of the system it's really cool because you need to equipt the right abilities (1) or the right sword (2) to get most out of it!
@gavvybiggs I heard they have some connection on a "higher level" regarding some characters. I only played Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 and they are stand alone games story-wise. So you can just start with 2 and play 1 later without any spoilers!
@mazzel hey, thanks for the reply! I think I’ll just play them in release order, at some point, when I clear some back log!
Thanks again.
I think that´s a good idea, because the battle system is a little different and some would say that Blade 2 has the superior system. So it might be that, if you start with Blade 2 and then play Blade 1, it feels like a step back. For me personally that´s not the case because the battle systems differ enough already in the basics that it doesn´t really matter Take your time and Enjoy, you can easily spend 200+ hours with both together!
@Nin10Doe I will wait for some reviews and then decide if that´s enough for me to double dip and spend 150 hours on Bionis again Thanks for the hint!
