Moonlight Games is hard at work on a new adventure game called Hunt the Night, with the likes of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Bloodborne acting as influences for the project.
The game is set in a dark world with 16-bit era graphics, tasking players with crossing a devastated world full of dungeons filled with puzzles, enemies and traps. The developers say that the difficulty is "high but rewarding", especially when you come up against boss fights. Here's a snippet of the game's official press release:
If you love Bloodborne and Dark Souls style dark fantasy games, high but fair difficulty, build creation, gameplay that rewards the player’ skills and the exploration and graphic style of the classic Zelda and Secret of Mana games, Hunt the Night is for you!
A Kickstarter campaign has launched today to see the game through development, with a Switch version promised should it be successful. It's aiming to generate €25,000 in 30 days - you can learn more, view the trailer and pledge your support right here.
What do you think? Do you like the sound of this one? Would you like to see it arrive on Switch? Tell us in the usual place.

Oof, those graphics are rough, were they drawn in MS Paint?
It's honestly difficult to visually identify anything in these screenshots.
@RupeeClock Agreed. I clicked because two of my favorite games were mentioned and saw this pixelated diarrhea. Didn’t want to go that extreme but it really does look like that.
I thought Zelda + Bloodborne = Sejiro
Those graphics are so off-putting. I think I'll stick with Salt and Sanctuary for my portable Bloodborne-lite fix for now.
Yeah I just don't see with those screenshots where the bloodborne meets zelda comes in lol.
Same here with the screenshots. Headline, art and premise had me interested, so I was itching to see some ingame screenshots
Welp. I'm not sure what I'm looking at
I do think that some pixelated 16-bit inspired modern games look nice. But I'm so, SO tired of that aesthetic. Not everything has to be pixels anymore. Look at something like GRIS, for instance, which has a very simple play style but uses gorgeous 2D graphics to it's benefit. I'm just tired of the apparently easy route that doing whatever in 16-bit is automatically artistic or hip or nostalgic, because it just feels lazy to me
@NotTelevision pixelated diarrhea got me. Best description for those 2 pics
Pixelated but in the bad way. No thx. Come back when you've got the quality of something like Iconoclasts.
The screenshots look baaaaddd!!
Color me intrigued.
Me:
Zelda? Yes
Secret of Mana? Yes
Dark Souls? Oh boy...
Bloodborne? Mmm...
When u mention Zelda and bloodborne, your game better be good
I’ve been rewatching Full Metal Alchemist lately and the characters, enemies and even fighting style in this are definitely giving me a lot of FMA vibes.
That said I also agree with everyone saying the graphics are pretty bad.
Got me excited over nothing.
Awful looking game. I know we're in the habit of saying games can be great despite subpar graphics but these aren't even good sprite based graphics.
Great bait, mate!
@dux Especially here where the graphical style looks inferior to that of the time. Tired of pixel this and that but once in awhile a Blaster Master Zero 2 comes along and I'm reminded by how flippin cool that style can be. Tired of most games looking like 8 bit designs in a 16 bit style (if you follow) with modern UE4 style lighting effects. I wanna see more of that 32 bit pixel like Mania.
Before complain, click on the link of the Kickstarter and watch the in gameplay. It's a solid 16bit game. I will help fund for Kickstarter. I love what i see.
More like if you mix poop with crap graphics. My old show 8-Bit Cinema had better art than this
I think the gameplay looks great. The combat looks fast with a lot of offensive options.... Hmmm....
I guess now you can just slap "16 bit era" on any Indie and not care to put any effort on presentation.
Just go get Hob - actually trying to make the Switch shine.
@Rpg-lover The stills in the article really showcase the deficiency in the background art, but noticed the arms in the first screenshot and thought maybe they were just bad screenshots. Watched the trailer and and it's just as you say. Looks 10x better. Anyone complaining about graphics should at least give it a chance in motion.
That said, screenshots like that should not be allowed to escape. A couple of close-ups on characters doing cool things would be nicer.
Well, mentioning two franchises I like (for good reason) got me to open the article. Well done NL. Game looks like crap.
as mentioned by others take a look to the trailer to get a full opinion about the graphics, it will probably change!I think that there is a huge difference comparing the screenshots with how the game really looks like.
sees headline
Oh. Two of my most favorite games. I think I might...
sees screenshots
PASS.
@Dralks
Yeah, taking a closer look at the Kickstarter page now, it's like Nintendo Life picked out the two worst screenshots to represent the project.
@RupeeClock y, thank you very much for noticing, I'm one of the developers so my opinion doesn't really count hahahaha but I appreciate the change of mind, really
@RupeeClock Agreed, looking at the demos and how the game looks in motion shows that the graphics are smooth. Screenshots don't represent how it is.
This is starting to feel like the NES era all over again...beautiful artwork on game covers but really simplistic looking visuals in the actual game. It's practically deceptive, really.
The game may appear nice enough in motion but the art direction won't change. This simplistic look doesn't do it for me at all.
No sense why have put these screens...the kickstarters video it looks totally different

The graphics are great to me, I dunno what are you guys complaining about.
Main character looks like Edward Elric but it's great!
I'll end up forgetting about the game by the release date... Such a long time from now.
The gifs above showcase much better graphics for sure. Man from those two screens I was gonna say some awful things. But not anymore. I won’t back this but I’ll keep my eye on it as I like the mixture they’re going for.
Why do all these "16-bit" games look so rough and pixelated?
Nothing like ALttP or Super Metroid…
I'm really not a fan of this sort of retro-inspired art. And it's not even the graphical era, it's the rough outlines that feel so jagged and digital - sprite "dots" are just really painful to watch.
@dux I feel you, but I don't necessarily think "lazy" is a fair way to describe it. That sort of implies that they have the artistic and technical expertise to make something more special, but didn't care enough to expend the time or effort. More likely, it's a small team that doesn't have the talent on board to make a Gris or Hollow Knight. If this is the only style of game they're able to make, I can't fault them for trying to make it.
I’ll pass on this one
I read the title, and I got excited...
https://youtu.be/gSY7XH_WW8U
Still playing dark souls for the first time, and can't wait to replay it completely once I'm done.
The title got my attention, and that was about it.
I'm now thinking a real, 3d, dark souls vs Zelda cross would be the best thing ever.
After all the comments about how bad the screenshots look I had to go back and look st them. I don’t think they look bad so much in that the color combinations in the second screenshot are unfortunate. I think if they do get this game going they need to make some different style choices.
went ahead and watched the trailer, i liked the gameplay but SOME of the art is mismatched with the theme and a quite a few sprites don't look like they belong in the same game.
The game looks great from the gameplay trailer.
It's probably a day one for me.
I havent found a 2d Soulslike thats ever clicked with me, besides Salt & Sanctuary. Always willing to give more a shot though.
Not judging the game at all, but what drives indie devs to throw around these big names?
"Bloodborne" didn't invent dark fantasy/gothic architecture...
"LttP" or "SoM" didn't invent "Pixelart"
Heck, both of them aren't even great examples in terms of sprite fidelity, tilesets etc!
If you go for fluid sprite animation and seamless tilesets, at least cite Squares later SNES games...
By throwing these big names around willy nilly, you set yourself up for comparisons, you probably can't withstand...
Ska Studios, of Salt & Sanctuary fame never once made comparison to FROMSOFTWARE's outings, and the game is pretty much a 2D carbon copy of the Souls Series...
Highlight your own strengths, don't use nostalgia bait. Those are footsteps hard to fill...
From the trailer i think the gameplay looks fantastic. The game mechanics and weapon system seem to be unique and inventive. The boss designs are wonderful and appear to be very challenging. The visuals in my opinion are well animated and are for the most part pleasant to look at.
I think people should check out the trailer. If anything you will see the 'fun' potential of gameplay. I certainly look forward to playing it should it all come together well.
Why is there only two vague screenshots.
Sounds like Breath of the Wild to me.
Perhaps zelda gameplay with dark souls graphical style would get me interested. Not really the other way around though.
sick of pixel-art games on switch. I mean i like pixel art but there is just too much out there.
I like the idea of this, but there aren't enough pictures posted. Are those the only pictures there are?
Ok Indies we get it - you all like pixelated graphics. But can you all stop using the same trope now just for some time pls?
Its funny how so many of these 16 bit era type games look nothing like 16 bit era games and usually look awful
@marandahir Super Metroid is 24 not 16 so it is noticeable yes
@Dpullam you can see full information trailer etc... in the kick-starter page:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/themoonlightgames/hunt-the-night-16-bits-dark-fantasy-action-adventu
October 2020 on Kickstarter means there won't be anything released before 2023.
@Dralks Oh okay. Thanks! I just found it odd that there were so few of pictures in this article if there are more available.
