By the end of this year, there'll be 29 playable NES games on the Nintendo Switch Online service. Next week, on 12th December, the final three games for 2018 will be added to this digital library. Below is a brief description of each one from the official PR:
- Adventures of Lolo – After the love of his life, Lala, is kidnapped by the devilish King Egger and taken to his haunted castle, our hero, Lolo, sets out to rescue her. The journey is perilous, as the Great Devil’s fortress is guarded by a massive army. But Lolo has a few tricks up his sleeve. Combining clever environmental puzzles with tricky enemies and an engaging style, Adventures of Lolo is a true classic.
- Ninja Gaiden – Take on the role of Ryu Hayabusa, a rising ninja in his family’s clan who travels to America to seek vengeance for his father’s death. Fight your way through six challenging side-scrolling chapters/14 stages (not including boss battles) while defeating gangs of street thugs, battling evil ninjas and fighting barbarian bosses by using the deadly Dragon Sword, ninja skills and ninja magic.
- Wario’s Woods – Control Toad as he scrambles along the bottom of the screen picking up monsters and bombs and arranging them vertically, horizontally and diagonally to clear the screen of enemies. This game features several modes of play, such as basic, lesson and time race. If you like puzzle games like Dr. Mario, you will definitely love this one!
In addition to this announcement, Nintendo confirmed more games will be added to the NES service next year, starting in January. At this point in time, no information about these upcoming releases has been revealed.
In the same PR, Nintendo also said the first shipments of NES wireless controllers for Switch would go out next week. These controllers are available in a pack of two for $59.99 and can be charged by attaching them to a docked Switch. The controllers are an exclusive offer for paid Switch Online members only and can be purchased from the official website.
Are you interested in playing any of these classics when they arrive next week? Have you purchased the wireless NES controllers for Switch? Tell us below.

Finally...can't wait to see 2019 line up
And I thought the slow trickle of games was bad before.
An option to purchase rather than rent these games would be nice.
Finally I'll be able to put Smash down
Ninja gaiden is one of the best lol.
I wonder which lucky game gets a “SP” version this time. Maybe a beaten Mario 3 with all the P Wings already. I’ve hardly touched this service since it started, but I might spend some time with it this month. I like all these games. A month with Kirby’s Adventure, Zelda 2 and Mario 2 would be welcome, then a month with some Castlevania and both Startropics. Oh what do I know? Maybe I’m entitled... I’ll do my best to not be negative and preach to the choir. Since the consumers have no voice in this matter and just have to be positive and grateful, okay fine, this is a good little month. The mouse will take his Christmas cookie. Too bad my local friends are appalled by the service so much that they refuse to pay into it at all, and I don’t get any of their help on MHGU or Dark Souls.
Oh boy, 3 whole NES games! I can't wait til next year!
@VR32X The games so far have been the same across all regions, so unless Nintendo is willing to do a Japanese localization of Startropics I and II or is willing to release it in Japan with no changes made, I can not see Star Tropics happening.
Boring. Hopefully 2019 has better old game offerings
Wario Woods on the NES is still great... but I kind of wish we had the SNES version with the updated presentation and more features.
@Mrtoad Japanese games have a lot of English in them nowadays anyway, and it wouldn’t be too much work to localize them. It isn’t like a Dragon Quest game or anything... I’m sure some Famicom players would love to give those games a go. Just like I was excited to play Murasame Castle (3DS) and Earthbound Beginnings (Wii U.) I say let the games begin. Lol
Ninja gaiden for me
@Seacliff Yes. I have the cartridge of SNES Wario’s Woods. I never understood why it was excluded from Virtual Console and the SNES Classic Edition. Thats the version I prefer to play!
ZZZzzzz.....snoozer!
@GameOtaku agreed!! I’ve only posted that wish 10x! Lol
I love Wario's Woods. I've only ever played the NES version so I guess I'm glad I don't know what I'm missing in the SNES version.
Okay Nintendo, neat concept. I’m also happily awaiting my controllers. But speed up the titles. More consoles. More variety.
Whoo....more NES games.
I can play Wario Woods from Animal Crossing on Gamecube, but, Thanks anyways Nintendo.
This service sucks
I'm actually happy for Ninja Gaiden. I never owned it, played it at my friends house. It rocks!
NSO is pretty decent right now, but the service really does need non-NES games so it can succeed in the long run.
I had no idea warios woods has a NES version
Nintendo NES online is nice. The ideal concept would be to expand it to all the previous consoles (for example: Per month (5 NES games, 4 SNES games, 3 N64 games, 2 GameCube games and 1 Wii game).
@Aurumonado Nintendo's final NES game and the only NES game originally rated by the ESRB.
I love Nintendo and their enduring legacy but I don’t want NES games, I want SNES, N64, GB, GBC, GBA, GC virtual console titles. NES is just a bit lazy on their part...
Underwhelming service is underwhelming. Thank god Smash is right around the corner.
Never played adventures of Lolo growing up so I'll give that a shot..ive played ninja gaiden to death honestly so i probabaly will play it for all of 5 minutes and stop. Once youve played the messenger, there's no going back to gaiden imo
All I care about is Kirby lol. Hopefully they’ll soon confirm whether or not SNES/GB games will eventually come. Riding off the Smash hype to introduce players to their favorite characters origin games has got to be a money-maker.
@Mrtoad ...the funny thing though it's that it's the existence of the "p versions" of games that give me hopes that localization of games(perhaps as a surprise in later 2019) would not be too far fetched in the Switch lifespan.
Since the P versions already set a precedent, even if light, of a version of games deviating from the "standard".
Ninja Gaiden is kinda cool. Still hoping they intend to add games from other retro systems and a little more frequently next year.
Not excited about this batch......maybe January will be better.......I'm still looking for NES. Baseball Stars on something since the SNK 40th let me down.......
If I grab the Sega and Atari collection though I'll have my youth on a small wonder machine full of arcade extras.......not a bad time to be an aging gamer
@VR32X ya man star tropics is literally all i want at this point.
Such a slow pace....
You know those tips some people give to waiters in restaurants that are so small as to be almost worse than no tip at all?
That's this service.
I was hoping for NES games that you cannot get on Wii or Wii U virtual console soon. Like Fire 'n' Ice game.
SNES games are coming... but you'll need to buy the New(tm) Nintendo Switch to play them.
Only 1 in 2 Switch users use the online subscription service. Maybe guys at Nintendo need to up their game and throw some SNES/GBA games in the package as well.
Wii legacy content...great
Wii u legacy content... decent
Switch legacy content...bad
Why is it getting worse with each console?
They need to change something up soon
Well, Lolo i never played, so that's something, i guess. I have no clue what 2019 will bring...
I love puzzle games, but have never been able to get into Wario Woods. Am I missing something (other than the SNES version)?
I suffered through it in order to complete the stages on NES Remix 2.
What a birthday gift for me...
But hey, I'll probably be busy playing Smash Bros by then so meh
Enjoying Nesflix so far and I’m glad it’s not just the IPs that I’ve played through before. Looking forward to two out of three this month.
Nice. Waiting for Metroid Prime Trilogy HD!
I'm happy with these choices, but they really need to up the rate at which these are released. It's becoming a little absurd.
Portable Ninja Gaiden! That's it, I don't think I need anything else...maybe Ninja Gaiden II and III
I don't care much for those NES games I must admit. I would really like the best of SNES and preferably the possibility to play some GameCube classics. Doesn't seem to happen this side of 2020 though...
I bought most of these NES games on Wii and Wii U.
Wario's Woods is a great puzzler with many levels. It's one of the best Nintendo exclusive puzzlers because of its smooth controls and unique, addicting gameplay. I think it was the third game (after Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Kart) where Toad was playable.
Adventures of Lolo was actually my second Lolo game. The first one I completed was on the Super Game Boy back in 1995. Reaching the exit in some of the screen-sized stages can be a real headscratcher. If you're in for some planning this could be for you, but bring some patience. Fortunately, with the additional Switch save, you can undo/rewind and don't have to restart the whole stage for every little mistake.
Boy, kinda wondering why I bothered getting an NES Mini now
Do they really think anyone cares about this stuff??
Hopefully January has Kirby.
My bet on the special game is Metroid.
If Nintendo insist on charging for online play, fine. I mean, I’d rather they didn’t, but it’s not totally unreasonable. What is unreasonable, is attaching crap that no one wants to that online subscription. If they offered the online service for £12 without the NES games, I’d go for it and I’d bet most others would too.
@GammaPhonic It gets pretty cheap if you can pitch in for a family plan with friends.
@dimi what they stated was that half of the people that subscribed got a year subscription. I don't think half of the consumers have subscribed
Don't spoil us, Nintendo!
I mean, who wants anything else from your huge back catalog than 35 years old 8-bit games anyway?
When the Switch will be 5-6 years old and irrelevant because of its successor, maybe we'll deserve some N64 or GC games, too.
But only if we wait patiently!
Three SNES games a month and I could probably get excited.
@construx don't expect anything more for the 20$/year and you won't be disappointed.
Unless the big majority of the people buying smash do not subscribe all will ever have is NES games as they have stated many many times
@Balta666 : I would gladly pay for the retro games instead of this weird mule solution where you can only play them if you subscribe to a totally different service and you cannot even own them...
Remember how the Wii VC opened with a 100 games across all retro platforms?
How did all that get so crippled by 2018...?
Maybe I’ll finally beat Ninja Gaiden. For those who don’t want to use emulators, this service allows them to finally beat some of these brutal and often cheaply difficult classics.
Be still my beating heart😍😍😍🙄
Nintendo online is garbage compared to other systems. I refuse to pay for nes games again and again and again.. games that cannot be played online with unknown gamers. No voice chat! Its that outdated, im suprised nintendo doesnt supply us with a crank handle to wind it up.
@construx I would like that too but I sincerely believe that they have decided to discontinue VC in order to have people keep buying Indies and other third parties.
Maybe they will do it down the line when the software sales get down a bit
Due to this online nonsense, I've decided to start a little physical NES collection with a NES clone. I'm very excited about it! Have mario 1 and 3, and some game call Solar Jetman. I'm more than happy now 👍. So long Nintendo online 🙄
@Balta666 : that would seem illogical to me. Yes, they get royalty for all games sold on the system but that's just a low percentage.
They would get the whole sum for all retro games they own.
Surely a baffling decision.
But hey, I'll get the Megadrive Collection today, in physical format!
At least Sega still knows what we want on the Switch retro front.
I'm gonna be fine with that for months.
The real question is when do we get mario 2?
@Slim1999 Does your lol mean you're being sarcastic. Genuine question.
Been wanting to play Adventures of Lolo for a while, so I'm willing to give it a shot
Does anyone else HATE the onscreen menu buttons as much as I do? Why can't we turn these off, Nintendo???
...so we get adventures of Lolo before Kirby's adventure.
I'm kind of shocked.
@construx well I was not saying it from a literal profit prespective.
There are a lot people here that will tell you that they will never buy Indies if they have all the content of VC as that is much better overall therefore I am saying they decided to get a hit in day one profit in order to have a system where everyone is selling well to have more and more companies interested in developing/porting for Switch.
But is is obviously just my own theory
@VR32X Thinking Ninja Gaiden...
Nintendo Online should be called LAMENES
but honestly, this is the best month selection yet... 3 great games!
I just wish my stepdaughter was willing to play those old crap with me hehehe
@Mykillvee Hopefully there will be an option to turn those off eventually.
@Cosats that would be awesome. How much would you pay a month or year for that though? There’s no way they’d release that many past games for what we pay atm. I’d happily pay a tenner a month for that many games.
@beazlen1 Same here.
A very solid list of 3 games for the month people should be quite happy to play with if they'd just relax and have some fun.
Whining about having 3 a month, get over it, it makes sense if you'd chill on the entitlement behavior and realize what they're up to. There's only so many games that aren't hot garbage now, unlicensed, in licensing hell, or otherwise locked down they can access. If they intend to keep this going steadily at 3/mo for the years to come, they'll run out in around 5 years pretty much.
I get the whining me me now now now mentality, but you can't have it all and right away. It's just a piece of their paid service, enjoy it or not, bug about it every month is getting old and very unfunny.
someday maybe they will add enough games i'll feel like subscribing to online lol.
Add some Gamecube games next time. Or some N64 games
Wish they'd add better button mapping and ability to rewind with L
@SKTTR Now that you mention not having to start each stage from the beginning I might give Adventures of Lolo another chance. You're right about needing patience though and I don't have much of that lately.
@Wanjia It's excellent
Would be nice if Nintendo gave away it's entire NES catalog on Christmas morning. Then they can start releasing SNES, GBA, N64, etc, etc in 2019.
I wonder what the JP famicom version is getting instead of the US Adventures of Lolo. The US Lolo didn't come out in Japan and is a compilation of levels from the Eggerland games. The JP Adventures of Lolo is based off the US Lolo II, but with a different level set. The are a few JP only Lolo related games in the Eggerland series.
@dimi
It’s not even 1 in 2 that signed up. They didn’t announce numbers, they just said 1 in 2 of those that signed up took up an Annual Plan.
https://mynintendonews.com/2018/10/30/over-50-of-nintendo-switch-online-users-went-for-the-annual-plan/
Maybe next year, add SNES/Gameboy (all iterations) games to the service as well. Would make the fee more worth paying for.
Well, the controlllers are gonna be useless once Nintendo stops supporting the Switch online service.
I checked Nintendo's JP website and Japan is getting their Adventures of Lolo, which is based of our Adventures of Lolo II, but with a different set of puzzles.
Only have played Nintendo Online games for 2 hrs (my Switch tells me). The lack of button remapping makes these semi-boring games uncomfortable to play. That said.....I am going to play the crap out of Wario's Woods. FINALLY. Wish they'd give us some more unique titles...Lolo 1 is pretty...just ok. Ghosts n Goblins n Mario 3 with the current button mapping really blows to try to play.
