There's not long at all until Nintendo Switch Online arrives and still, we're finding out more about how exactly certain aspects of the service will function.
If you were expecting to see individual tiles for each NES game clogging up your Switch HOME Menu, it's worth pointing out all of these classics will be contained within a single piece of software totaling 58.78 MB. The information once again comes directly from Nintendo's official website.
Based on what we've been shown so far, the library looks similar to various other digital media services available, where you flick through content until you find something you want to watch - or in this case play.
What do you think about the NES library being a single software icon on the HOME Menu? Were you expecting this? Were you hoping to display your NES games proudly alongside your modern Switch titles? Tell us in the comments below.

This was reported days ago...I thought I read it on here, but I guess not? It’s all running together now, haha.
I’m happy that my home screen won’t suddenly have 20 new boxes cluttering it.
That's cool. No need to waste space
Of course. The games are just in the range of kilobytes.
The emulator itself should actually be larger in size.
Just gimme, already!!! 2 1/2 hours... guess I’ll go play with my cardboard for now.
Excellent!
I like how this keeps your library clean and limited only to games that you’ve purchased for your switch. That said, would be nice to “pin” a few of your favorites as shortcuts for quick access.
NESflix
I've already got too many games on my home menu, so all in one slot is preferred. As with every update, I'm hoping for an update to the home menu layout and/or customizable themes.
And as with every update, I'll more than likely end up disappointed.
It always amazes me how much technology has changed. Games from that era are smaller than a single song on iTunes or Amazon today.
Considering the Japanese Wii and Wii U Virtual Console hit way above 100 NES games, its much needed.
Good! Maybe we'll have a separate one for SNES, or maybe it'll all be in the same one. So how does it work exactly? You can play all these offline or you have to download certain ones to your account? Because even though I have a big SD card inserted, I'm not looking forward to having a whole library of games taking up space when I'm only going to play a few of them. When it comes to bigger games like SNES or N64...that's gonna be a problem if we have the full library on our consoles.
Excellent news, less homescreen clutter!
@Heavyarms55 It's a wonder, games from the NES era were less than the size of a single iTunes download & were usually made by one person... the average game today fills multiple layer DVDs and take teams of hundreds.
Awesomesauce! Gimme Gradius now!
ANd maybe Galaga and Pac-Man later pls!
Well yes, it seemed that way in the direct.
It's nice that they're placing them in one single frame. It's their way of making a folder without actually having folders available (btw, when are they coming!!?).
I like that it’s one icon. Keep it tidy. I’ve been looking forward to it for a while. I don’t even play online much. I guess I’m starving a bit. Been a while since I’ve got a new game and the Swiych UI is just so boring. Looking for something fresh I guess.
@Baker1000 I believe they'll do the same when SNES games come. N64 could work the same because even if you place 20 of those in one slot, you'd probably spend less than 1GB of the system's storage.
Actually, I'm very okay with this.
No problem with it being one slot, however, when (if?) the library gets massive, it might be annoying to scroll through a ton of games to find the one you want. Maybe they can add a way to "pin" favorites, or hide games that you know you don't want to play.
It's up!!!!
I’m glad to hear that it’s a single icon. Without folders, the home menu would get totally blown out with NES icons, most of which I’m not interested in playing, anyway.
I hope that they let us customize controls in a future update. On the Pro Controller B and A need to be able to be optionally swapped, and Y is going to waste. I want to use Y to speed up and B to jump in Mario
Love the layout!
Literally nobody can complain about this. Yet, I still believe there's gonna be irrelevant discussions anyway. Good addition though.
I like the layout.
Sucks the Pro Controller doesn't work.It worksThank goodNES, lol
@JaxonH
Pro Controllers are not compatible with the NES games???
Wow, it gets better and better, right? -_-
@JaxonH The Pro Controller works.
Can't wait.....
@JaxonH
So the Pro Controllers wont work with the NES games?
Thats a damn shame if true, might have to grab those NES controllers after all.
@Osiris11235
They do? I hope so. After the Super Mario Party announcement, I was really disappointed. But the NES games is like... why?
@GeeEmm and @Sebas They definitely work in NES games. I'd prefer that you could remap the buttons, but they do work
@Osiris11235
Phew! Cheers mate. Yeah button mapping would be nice but oh well.
This overlay is really annoying. Also why does the Y button keep getting ignored on NES games?
I assumed it would. It's pretty much NESflix, one app containing all the content.
@JaxonH My 8bitdo SNES controller is detected as a Pro Controller, and it works fine. Just played Gradius and SMB3 with a proper D-Pad.
I hope they lift that ridiculous 7-day offline limit. That's just iduotic. If I'm paying for the service for a year, I should be able to play those games offline for a bloody year.
nice! no wasted space!
Me liking the free trial, love these old classic. My only disappointment is that there's not much options in the emulator where you could change filter to your liking but having save states is a plus.
Hello!!! I leave My friend code to play nes online 2754 8871 4987
@cowntsikin Agreed. At least on PSN all the software that's tied to your PSN subscription records the current end date of your subscription as the expiration.
@Osiris11235 @Sebas @GeeEmm @Ralizah
Thanks for the clarification and to the other people who responded I'm being told the pro controller does work.
Whatever reason it wasn't responding when I tried it and when I switched to the joy cons it worked and then when I checked the control scheme it did not show a pro controller in the diagrams so I just concluded it wasn't compatible.
It seems some people here have got it working so I'm going to try it again. Sorry for any false alarms there lol
@Ralizah
Oh my gosh. I'm an idiot.
The reason I thought it wasn't working is because I could not use the D pad or left analog to select one player or two player.
I just realized that back on NES you had to use the actual select button to toggle between options
Oh my goodness ☺️
Excellent!
@JaxonH
At least you realized you're mistake. I could see that tripping someone up.
The layout of the games is actually quite nice. If the system gets more big hitters like Castlevania, Contra, Super C, Kirby's Adventure, etc. it'll be more attractive.
@JR150 Those are in the Namco Museum so I don't think you'll see them in the NES Online collection.
I tried almost all the NES games. The only game I like is Super Mario 3
I hate all the other games. The games in general are simply terrible in this age... There was a leak a while ago the special offers were wii games. Please let that be. I would be so happy with that. Not with this.
@infernogott The x and y both dont work since NES only had the D pad, A, B, start and select. For some reason select has always been useless. Why does it even exist lol
I love it's simplicity, but I wish I could buy individual cartridges and boxes for each game. It would be like I'm a kid again.
I like this. 20 NES games arranged separately would clog my home screen. I'm also glad you can customize the order of the NES games in its own menu by dragging and dropping.
Also, is there anyway to remove the button/options overlay on the games themselves? It's kinda annoying tbh.
I’m liking it so far so good
Signing up tonight...sod the crybabies.
Well, all is set up for a SNES app and a GC app at least, almost 100% sure!
I’m disappointed that the online is friends only, when Capcom Beat Em Ups can offer online action against randoms.
I doubt I’ll get much opportunity to try the online features now.
In Switch news it says you can play against friends and rivals around the world.
Am I just missing the random matchmaking feature?
I've been enjoying the NES Online service, playing Ghosts n Goblins right now as we speak and on my way through level 3. It's not perfect and I would like to see some improvements, but I think it's pretty good so far.
As far as online goes, it's definitely friends only. I think the "around the world" bit is just referring to the fact it's using the internet. If you want to find people to play these games with, you'd better start exchanging friend codes. I imagine there'll be a topic for that in the forum if there isn't already.
Was never going to be a problem for me as I have no interest in Naf Nes games
Had a blast last night playing a bunch of games I haven’t touched in 25+ years. I’m going to enjoy this service. Curious if anyone else played SMB and thought the colors looked a bit dark? I felt that way, but I admit that it’s been a really long time since I’ve played an actual NES cart or rom of the game. I hope we eventually get more border options and control over the display.
nice of them to help us organize our digital collection of NES games. now, when will Nintendo give us an option for organizing the rest of our games.
@bimmy-lee The real fun will be watching the flip-floppers flip-flop over the next few months...
"Damn you Nintendo! No way am I buying this crap!!!!"
3 months time: "Well maybe at the start of 2019..."
the interface to this really is beautiful, and I love the filter options (CRT all the way! There's no other way to play, the graphics were designed with moire and CA in mind!)
The initial library is pretty thin and few of the games really hold up well at all today, but it's a nicely presented system all the same.
@WiltonRoots - No doubt. Everyone will eventually crumble as they add systems. For me, $20 well spent already. All other games from this point forward are added value. I launched two player online last night just to see how it works, and realized it’s based on my friend list. You’re my only Switch friend, and I was a little surprised to see you weren’t on at 4:00 am your time for a quick game of Double Dragon.
@bimmy-lee Yeah I might have been asleep....I should have been awake, in here protesting about the online but I couldn't stay awake any longer, the blind rage towards Nintendo's anti-consumer practices wore me out.
I'm curious to see how Double Dragon stacks up against the Master System version though, I opted for a Master System over the NES back in the day, there was something about the NES colour palette that didn't agree with me. Plus looking forward to retrying Super Mario 3...I played it for a short stint in All Stars back in the 90s and loved it.
@WiltonRoots - How else is Nintendo going to change unless we complain all over the place, all the time?!? Speaking of which, Glen Fox just posted a positive piece about the online service, and the comment section is already an apocalypse.
To be totally honest, DD on NES is bad. It’s super slow, flickers, and it’s washed out like you said. But I played it to death back then, and still love it. River City Ransom is the gem of the first 20 titles for me, but there are a handful of good games in there.
Well, this does make other consoles slightly more unlikely (though not entirely, they could create separate apps for each console or rename the app). As others pointed out though, while this file size is small, SNES and N64 (and GCN) would be much bigger if you’re downloading entirely libraries, so this method seems to me implying that we won’t get other consoles. I’d love to be proven wrong though.
@bimmy-lee Just looked at that article...absolute bloodbath. I'd hate to be tarred with the "gamer" brush, just in case people think I freak out over trivia just as much as them. Crying over 5 measly pence a day and carrying on like they're some sort of freedom fighter.
I just signed up for Online too and well - I don't need a NES Classic now. I shall dig deeper later but so far so good. Plus I backed up my saves manually in a matter of seconds.
I only tested Super Mario 3 so far, but it seems to have an annoying bug in all 3 screen modes: a big line on the left of the screen (mostly light blue) and scrolling to the right shows a weird discolorazation on the right side of the screen, like pixels still need to form. Does anyone else have this and is it the same with other games?
@Baker1000 for some reasons I feel it's the whole app so to speak that houses the games
@arjanw That's not a bug. It's how the original game looked.
In the original version, those artifacts were just more likely to be hidden by the television's overscan.
@WiltonRoots - Man, I meant to reply all week and continuously forgot. Not like it’s that important, but I’m not sure how I’d receive NES games these days if I hadn’t played them so hard as a kid. Hope you’re enjoying them so far. I’ve always liked Nintendo, but the MegaDrive/Genesis is probably my favorite console ever. I don’t think mine has been boxed up longer than a few months since I got it new.
@bimmy-lee I tried the tennis, I made the mistake of trying to play it like Virtua Tennis, that doesn't work... I played Donkey Kong and forgot how hard it was, I couldn't even get off the first stage! I haven't played it since the arcade version in the early 80s. Played some Super Mario Bros and loved it, I want to sit down and do a chunk of Super Mario 3 soon.
Edit: I'm hoping when they start dropping SNES titles they include Super Tennis, that was a brilliant game.
@WiltonRoots - Yep, the DK NES port seems so slow and hard, and it was already difficult in its arcade state. Weirdly, Nintendo didn’t do a great job porting their own arcade titles early on. Similarly, I never liked their early sports titles like Tennis or Hockey. There are much better sports games via third parties from that era in my opinion. There’s some great stuff up already though, and some great stuff coming. Super Dodge Ball is an all timer for me. That one was in those old Nintendo Play 10 cabinets. Have fun man. Pure speculation, but I think they might add new systems quarterly while still updating the older catalogues.
