One of the hottest pre-E3 rumours on the internet over these past few days has been the discussion over Retro Studios working on a Star Fox title that aims to play closer to a hybrid of F-Zero and Diddy Kong Racing. Indeed, this alleged Star Fox: Grand Prix sounds like a bit of an outlandish possibility, but it’s also one of those things that’s just weird enough that there might be some truth to it. Now, more information has leaked that Retro is working on another title, as well.

In a discussion of the Star Fox rumour, Game Informer dropped the following information that it had gathered from trusted sources:

Rumors of the game have been swirling for several months in light of talk from some sources that Retro Studios' title has been struggling, with many at both Retro and Nintendo growing frustrated with the state of the project. These sources did not confirm whether the project being worked on was this Star Fox title.

Following this, Jason Schreier of Kotaku gave his two cents on the Star Fox rumour, while also dropping some information about what else is going on at Retro. Here’s what was said:

We’ve also heard from two other sources that the Austin, Texas-based Retro had a separate project that went through a rocky development cycle and may in fact be canceled.

Schreier later clarified that he’d heard about this being a different project, which would show that Retro is working on both Star Fox and something else. It would certainly explain why the studio has been oddly quiet since the original launch of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, but as with anything, all of this is hearsay until official word from Nintendo. Hopefully E3 will shed more light on the situation.
