Koei Tecmo is a name that may be a little more familiar to Nintendo fans in recent years, as it’s pushed out both Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors, crossovers between Nintendo’s popular franchises and the company’s Musou games. While there’s no news on what else the companies are collaborating on, if anything, the president of Koei Tecmo recently stated in an interview the franchise that he’d like to get his hands on next.
Speaking with Kotaku, Hisashi Koinuma said that he’d like to take on the Mario series, and it seems like he’d be game for making just about anything featuring the plumber. Here’s what was said:
I’d like to have an opportunity to work on Nintendo’s Mario. Basically, he’s a character I’ve been playing with ever since I was a kid, so if I could do something with him, I’d be really happy.
Considering Nintendo’s recent track record of being a little more lenient with its IP and the kind of games that can be made with it, we wouldn’t be all too surprised if a Super Mario Warriors were to pop up someday. Even if it didn’t end up being a Musou title, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle has shown the kinds of interesting ideas that other companies have for the plumber.
What do you think? Would you like to see a Mario Warriors game? What else do you think Koei Tecmo could do with the franchise? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Will buy it!
I want another Warriors game...like, what about Senran Kagura Warriors...or Sailor Moon Warriors? Bleh...it'll never happen will it?
I’m not into those Warriors games, but Mario + Rabbids was great, so I’d be open to other possibilities
reads tagline
Yes! Please!
I'm usually up for Mario anything. But I just can't see a Mario Musou game. But maybe something more like a Mario action RPG?
Mario warriors sounds violent, maybe something with more of a puzzle focus warriors game?
Ha...Mario Musou. That would be amazing.
@Joeynator3000 I'm still honestly surprised that Final Fantasy Warriors is taking so long to happen. Then again, with Dragon Quest long on board, this may be somewhere around the corner, too.
A Nioh game with Mario and co. slicing up Goomba's and stuff!
...not gonna happen, but I'd buy it in a heartbeat ^^
back to square one, on a Animal Crossing Warriors huh?
but seriously, would be neat to see how a mario game would look like with Koei Tecmo.
A Nights of Azure spinoff starring Daisy and Peach? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Although I suppose we're talking something Koei would want to work on more directly than via Gust.
It will be interesting - Same plot: Bowser kidnapped Peach so Mario and friends to the rescue. You will basically be slaughtering Koopa and goomba instead of warriors and soldiers. It's a good idea, having Donkey Kong and Yoshi as allies are more fun.
Super Mario Warriors was the idea that came into my head when Hyrule Warriors was first released and man would I be excited if it came true 😎👌🏻🔥
Now that I'm imagining it, I would be all for a Musou-style Mario game where instead of everyone using traditional weapons like swords, lances and axes they instead use more absurd weapons like Hammers, Parasols and banana rocket launchers. A cartoon-y aesthetic and charming writing/humour would also be really appreciated
I would also love it that alongside the traditional Musuo hack n slash gameplay, they tried incorporating some platforming and other standard mario elements into the mix such as having warp-pipes that allow you to traverse semi-large portions of the map and have pow-blocks spawn from time to time so that you can safely deal with a large number of enemies at one.
Super Mariors or get out of here!
Can you imagine the sound of all those goombas exploding into coins?
I love Zelda and Fire Emblem. I played both their Warriors games. I learned something from playing them. Nothing will ever make me like a musou game. Period.
Mario's Ambition - a deep world Civilization-like domination strategy RPG where Mario succumbs to his craziness, grows a Kratos beard and wishes to unite the world using his forces.
Mario Gaiden please.
Or why not a Warriors game that takes place in the Ruined Kingdom of Super Mario Odyssey. Showing us an ancient Kingdom long before the Mushroom Empire. Where Warriors fought between following the dragons or using the electricity to advance technology into a new way of life. Causing the eternal conflict of Tradition and Modernism. A war where heroes were needed, and many heroes had died. A golden time long forgotten to the residence of the Mushroom Kingdom
..............God please Nintendo give us some game based on the Ruined Kingdom. I beg of you.
Super Samurai Mario.
Monster Rancher X Pokemon.
Between Mario + Rabbis being better than it any right being and how KT is getting rather good at hybrising it's warrior spin offs (FE and Hyrule) I'm now total okay with then taking a crack at Mushroom Warriors
I’d LOVE to see a Mushroom Kingdom Warriors
Mario is fun, but he's never really been "cool".... A Warriors-like games could change that.
Didn't they say this when hyrule warriors first came out on the WiiU?
Old news is old
If Mario meet Warrior style, i guess....
Mario = Samurai
Luigi = Ninja
Princess Peach / Rosalina / Daisy / Paulina = Huntress
Bowser = Dark Samurai (Two handed Blade), Orochi (True Form)
Koopa Troopers = Sphear Soldiers
Toad = Healer
Well.... just my predictions.
I'll kill for a Super Mario Warriors
Oh wait we have Subspace Emissary with a bunch of other charas
If it were a warriors game, I would prefer a smash bros warriors.
Not another warriors game, they so dull I find, how about fatal frame 6??? Or something new!
Romance of the Mushroom Kingdoms or gtfo
No s*!t they want to work with Mario, that would treble the sales! And mate we've all been playing Mario game since we were kids. I love Fire Emblem and Zelda but have played both games and they're samey and boring. Has everyone really run out of ideas that they can't continue on a main series (I'm looking at you Star Fox/F-Zero mash up!)?
As long as Dark Tennis God Luigi is a playable character
A warriors game with Mario seems like the natural next step since they have already worked with Zelda and Fire Emblem, and it is really the only other series Nintendo has that has enough characters to fill out the roster of the game.
Why people like the ruined kingdom so much?It doesn't fit the cartoony world of Mario at all.The first time I saw it in a video,I tought it was a mod.
I'd rather they take a crack at a Warhammer 40k game: Horus Heresy Warriors.
Though I think their wacky gameplay style would fit that oddball setting of Age of Sigmar more.
Please keep your dirty amateurish hands away from my chubby immigrant.
please don't make another warriors game those game suck yeah i said it
No Mario Musou
I'd love a Mushroom Kingdom Warriors game. I swear I'd put hundreds of hours into that one.
Mario Warriors would be hilarious.
I would kinda prefer to see a Smash Bros Warriors game, but a Mario Musou could be interesting too I suppose.
Looks like my comment predicted the future...
Would be cool. But smashbros Warriors will break records lol.
Bump mario, I wish that they would bring NA: Taishi to the west on switch. I hate playing those in Japanese because the text is small.
maybe something like Koopas become coins when smashed
@Joeynator3000 magical Girl warriors?
Have all the different magical girls from different animes be in one, sailor moon, madoka, Sakura, Ore, etc.... Would be an interesting game.... Haha
would be interesting
Cool, but it's dead to me if it's not called 'Romance of the Mushroom Kingdoms'
Bayonetta Warriors. I know she's not Nintendo, but at this point it might as well be
Mario could create a really unique warriors game. Egg bombing scores of enemy as yoshi. Riding into battle as mario with yoshi as his steed .
Also why not both the first half of the game could be mushroom kingdom warriors, but the second half could start with Broswer's defeat and exile which he uses to travel to other worlds and create armies from other members of the smash bros roster.
I don't see how Mario could fit a hack and slash title.
@G-Boy well I can easier imagine Mario killing hundreds of Goomba then tingle slaying Ganon, but the latter is a thing in Hyrule Warriors.
I'll buy it.
Does Koei Tecmo make anything other Warriors games?
None of those has ever interested me, and this wouldn't move the needle at all for me either.
I don't enjoy games where you simply spam the attack button for hours on end.
Súper Mario Warriors could be so much fun!
@G-Boy People couldn't imagine Mario in a fighting game ( before any purist of the genre says anything about Smash not being a fighting game just change "fighting" for "brawler" or whatever satisfies you), and yet he is in Smash Bros.
oh god nooo... the Warriors series is stupid and boring ...
I probably wouldn't get a Mario Warriors game, but it does seem like an interesting idea.
@BlackenedHalo It's not like anyone's putting a gun to your head to buy it. Let people have what they like.
@Joeynator3000 I was just thinking that I'd had my fill of "Warriors" games for a while...but then you had to mention the idea of Sailor Moon Warriors.
I would LOVE to play that hypothetical game.
I was surprised with how well Ubisoft did with Mario in Kingdom Battle. That said I wasn't very impressed with Hyrule Warriors. It was really fun to play for the first little bit and then I realized, "This is all there is". The strategy in that game is ... basic to say the least. You walk around like an OP nightmare destroying tiny little enemies, and every few seconds you realize a really impressive looking attack that you triggered with minimal effort. And then you repeat. Watching the reveal trailers are honestly more fun than playing the game.
Don't get me wrong I logged in probably at least 20 hours into the game. I finished the story for the good guys, and then I was done. Also while the definitive version of HW isn't a bad deal given all the DLC, I'd never buy another one of their games given how you have to spend like another 50% o the cost of the game (at least) to get all the DLC.
The game play just gets stale. Now if there was actually strategy involved and you ran around the Mushroom Kingdom (and other places) taking on popular Mario foes and maybe even characters from other Nintendo games, that'd be cool. But it would need to be something more than glorified button mashing.
