Eden Games - the studio behind the upcoming Switch racer Gear.Club Unlimited - has revealed that it will offer a 4-player splitscreen mode.
Pascal Clarysse, Eden Games' CMO-at-large, dropped the news in an interview with Red Bull while explaining the big differences between the Switch title and the smartphone release on which it is based:
First and foremost, there is a major economic difference: the game will be premium, which means you get the full experience after purchase – no micro-transactions. We also capitalise on the machine’s power to deliver higher definition of graphics and visual effects. Then, from a gameplay perspective, you'll be able to enjoy local multiplayer, playing in splitscreen between up to four friends – or foes! – at once, using the Joy-Con controllers.
Clarysse also stated that Eden Games is targeting 1080p, 30fps "minimum" when docked:
We're aiming for 1080p in docked mode, 720p in handheld. We guarantee minimum 30 fps across the board.
Another interesting piece of info relates to the Switch's digital triggers. Racing games on PS4 and Xbox One benefit from analogue triggers for braking and acceleration, something which isn't possible on Nintendo's hardware. However, Clarysse insists that he and his team have found a solution:
We are simulating analogue on the digital triggers by converting pressures through a software gauge that is progressive.
It was also confirmed that the game will be getting DLC of some kind post-launch. Let us know if you're excited about this upcoming racer by posting a comment below.

It isn't only local right?
Finally some proper information, nice! I am looking forward to the first gameplay video.
Surely it's easy to get THAT game to run at such a spec. It looks like a dogs breakfast...
Beutiful graphics
Sounds fantastic already on my to buy list
@Filth_Element You feed your dog something that bad for breakfast? You should have it taken away from you
Good mobile game
Played a lot on iPad. Free too
"We are simulating analogue on the digital triggers by converting pressures through a software gauge that is progressive."
Well that doesn't make any sense to me but regardless, I'm definitely interested in this if it gets half-decent reviews.
Even cartoony MarioKart 8 looks more real than this graphics here... and they run at 30fps?
Been waiting for this news.
Its a Must Buy Game...
@dystome It's possible. While a digital button only has "on/off" positions, it's possible to check that value every frame to increment an "acceleration" variable for example. The increment can be based on a curve to make it smoother and customizable.
It won't be as good as proper analog triggers though...
@exDeveloper Hmmm, sounds like it could also dampen my acceleration just for the sake of trying to appear analogue. I think given the choice I'll turn that off and keep the traction control on.
Really hope they push it to 720p 60fps because in arcade racing games stable 60 fps do make or break a game. Anyway, I am still looking forward to this because it seems that after "NFS Most Wanted" on Wii U everyone just forgot that there are people who own Nintendo systems that would enjoy arcade / sim racers on their hardware.
I'll be waiting to read some reviews, but I've not written it off completely.
You only have to play it on iOS or Android to see how bad this game is. It’s terrible but free on those platforms.
@Shiryu
Actually in my experience 30fps is not so noticable with camera movement that is basically limited to forward motion. With camera panning left an right, which doesn't happen in a racing game, (not where it counts), it gets harder to ignore of course. I'm willing to give the game the benefit of the doubt. TDU 1 and 2 certainly didn't run above 30fps either (at least on console), but the openworld (and Hawaii no less) made it worthwhile (to me it was like an exploration racer and that's how I played it) and I had several hundreds of hours of fun with them.
@JunkRabbit I hope I get used to it, it's not like I am planning on buying any other console any time soon.
@Hughesy That does worry me a bit... but I have seen perfectly good "Burnout" clones on mobile devices and am hoping this turns out to be a good one.
Wouldn't it have been far better to run at 60fps in 720p? It's a racing game after all, e.g. like MK8 on Wii U.
Great, I have this game on my radar. Can't wait!
I hope it's online and not just local?
December 1st release is what I'm seeing at my end!
30 FPS during 4-Player split-screen is acceptable... but in single-player, there's no way a racing game should be anything but 60 FPS... a game like this should run at 1080/60 in single player... ok fine, 900/60.
@Menchi187 😂 aww yeah... your right I should change my bad ways. I'll only feed him the best from now on shame I can't say the same for some of these eShop games...
Glad to see it's simply not just a straight port from the phone game.
Very hyped for this! Four player splitscreen in a game like this is something I've been longing for, and from what I've read before the physics could be really good as well.
No idea what to think about that pressure sensitivity, but it sure sounds smart if it works. I'm hoping for the best here.
Looks like it runs better than the Project CARS crap.
Looking forward to this one! It’s a very good mobile game and the switch version will be even better for sure. The studio behind it is very experienced in making car games for consoles, with 20 years plus in this industry. They made games like NFSD: Porsche Unleashed and Test Drive Unlimited. The driving feels great on my iPad and even better with my controller connected.

Need to see alot more and some reviews, any more than £10 is abit much lol
@Shiryu That was a cracking game
Although I welcome splitscreen option, what I really want for multiplayer in Switches case, would be wireless multiplayer.
(For 60fps AND screen for each player)
I will wait for reviews, but I have been wanting a good real world racing title for my Switch. As long as the price is right I will try this.
@Daz-brum
It’s on my buy list too. The devs for Project Cars can suck it. Did you hear they want us to go to their website and beg them to port their game (that was supposed to have been released on the Wii U) to the Switch? They’re not getting that from me.
Looks fine to me. I told myself I'd only get it if there were some Fords in it. All the other cars are rather lackluster.
This is my most wanted game for the switch, I'll be sinking so many hours into this game! I'm so hype. Gamestop has this game listed for Nov 21st 2017 release date (US )
Are they still making Burnout games? If so, I hope the next one hits Switch. A Burnout Paradise port to Switch would also be pretty sweet.
This... doesn’t look great.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Nah, 60 fps only matters to people have phenomenally bad reaction times or just really really want it to matter to them.
Anyone who tells you any game is less good because it is not 60 fps is a liar. A straight up liar. Frame rate cannot have an impact on the quality of a game unless it is different for every player. All that matters is that it is stable. If frame rate is the reason you can't play a game, it's not the frame rate, you just suck.
SInce it doesn't have a lot of competition on Switch (right now, at least) it could be a worthwhile adition to the library. Will keep an eye on it, but tbh, i am a bit skeptical (and i don't like the prospect of a ported mobile game that will cost some money on Switch and still has DLC already announced?!).
They need to talk what the online looks like. SplitScreen multiplayer was important in the PS2 era. it is 2017, VS racing games are online.
Does it contain a tilt to steer option?
@Shiryu speaking of Need for Speed U, Criterion figured out a way around the digital triggers beautifully. Map the acceleration and braking to the right analog stick (up for accel, down for brake). Problem solved, and it worked perfect.
@gatorboi352 I miss old Criterion...new Criterion is fine too, they did awesome work on "Battlefront II" Star Fighter mode. Would still prefer a new "Rogue Squadron" to "Battlefront"...
@exDeveloper @dystome Many people don’t know this but the Ps2/3 Dualshocks had analogue (digital) buttons... so the X Triangle etc.. and even the d-pad was actually analogue, using pressure sensitivity.. so the harder you press, the more it registers, similar to force touch on the later iPhones... I wouldn’t have thought the Switch was capable or you would think Nintendo would have made a big deal about it, but then again, Sony was mostly quiet about it too... so maybe.
That's an interesting approach they're taking for analog triggers. I'll be interested to see how it turns out.
And of course the game too. It's been highly praised across the board, but I'm curious to see how well it stacks up as an actual console game (which has much more fierce competition and higher standards).
I do like how games are just becoming games now. The line between mobile and console and PC is becoming less clear by the day, just like the line between indie and AAA is becoming more and more blurred. If you look at the top 1% of mobile games they could likely all pass as solid console games.
@KcebEnyaw There is so much more to the framerate than just “a stable framerate”. A stable framerate refers to correct frametime i.e a new frame is delivered at every 33.3ms (30fps).
The difference between 30 and 60 is huge, not just in fluidity but also response time (16.6ms). 60fps allows for much more responsive controls (less input lag) and for high speed games such as racing/FPS’s, this is a huge benefit and can make the difference between whether the game can be fun to play compared to competitors. It has nothing to do with a level playing field (unless you’re on PC).
Basically, if it’s only 30fps, you get more input lag and less fluidity compared to competitors such as Mario Kart or the likes of Forza on other platforms.
@Agramonte Yeah is it because no one these days has friends in real life to play these games with? smh...
Nintendo needs a variation of the Pro Controller with analogue triggers. There's just no excuse. Gamecube had them and certain VC games will be unplayable unless they remedy that.
already have it on my radar to pickup this year.
Hmm, the real question should be Micro-transactions, we've yet to hear anything about that, the one thing killing games right now...I refuse to pay full price for a game then to be expected to shell out continuously to upgrade my "experience"...BS.. Completely different then a free to play game, for which N has yet to dip their toes in on the Switch..
@TTgowings It says there, in the article "First and foremost, there is a major economic difference: the game will be premium, which means you get the full experience after purchase – no micro-transactions."
@mechamen8 Well, I rarely play online with people I do not know - for me is more about time. I can jump online after I come home from work and see who is online and play for a few hrs before bed with my mates or cousin in Madrid.
Last time I played co-op at home was Lego-Undercover with my little niece when she came to visit us.
It shall be mine, oh yes.
While I'm not an FPS enthusiast (I'm fine with 30 fps for shooters and action-adventures), I believe 30fps are too little for a racing game.
Plus the the textures look really muddy and awful. Is this a port from a mobile game?
I was looking forward to this but now I lost my interest.
EDIT: @Hughesy Just saw your post, which confirms my suspicion.
See, this is why it was such a huge mistake to make a hybrid device based on tablet hardware: all the developers are 'mistaking' it for a portable (not really, because it actually is) and porting their crappy mobile and handheld games to it.
It's getting more frustrating every day because it seems that - right now and in the future - apart from a few Big N blockbusters, there are only tons of crappy to average indie games on the Switch and nothing else.
The Switch is basically just a tablet without tablet functions + a few Nintendo games.
I’m starved for a non-Mario Kart racing game. I can’t help but be incredibly disappointed by this game’s roster of cars, though, especially considering the $45 price tag. There’s no Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Porsche. Hopefully the DLC remedies this.
So is there no real online for this game or what? Because here is what it says on Nintendo's website for the game (Challenge your friends, competing among up to 4 players on the same screen, or beat their times online).
