Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U was wonderful, and it still is - even though Switch owners have been blessed with an updated version in the form of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
However, there's one annoying issue with the Wii U original which has thankfully been fixed in the Switch update, and that relates to way in which the acceleration stat is manifested in the game.
As you'll already know if you're a seasoned Mario Kart 8 player, each vehicle's stats are different, and vary in quarter increments - .25, .5, .75, etc. However, the acceleration stat - arguably one of the most important when you consider how vital it is to pick up speed after being clobbered by a red shell - was never accurate. It would always round down to the closet whole number, so if your kart had 2.5 acceleration, it actually raced like it only had 2.
This is no longer the case in Deluxe, as AbdallahSmash026 proves with the video below.
With this irksome issue finally put to bed, we can now obsess over those stats properly. Let us know if you've noticed this change yourself by posting a comment below.
Thanks to SLIGEACH_EIRE for the tip!

Can't say I ever noticed or was bothered if I l'm honest lol
@GuruOfGreatness me either
I don't know how I never knew about that. That sounds horrible, glad they fixed it.
Love Abdallah!
Got into his channel when Yo-kai Watch came out and he's great. 😀👍
Was just watching his MK8D time trials stuff last night. It's great to see what karts etc he recommends cos I really struggle with that and even net searches aren't helpfull.
Wait, our staunch WiiU apologist tipped you off to an article praising a Switch version of a broken stat in WiiU game?!?!?
Semi /s
While some people likely wouldn't have noticed on the original WiiU version, this is actually a decent change. A lot of karts which have never seen use might be worth giving a try now. There were a few that were just " much of a muchness".
Simply adds a little more fun experimenting with the options now.
I did never know this lol
That's great, up to now I always chose a configuration with whole numbers even though I didn't always like the looks. Now I can go nuts
I had no idea it was an issue. It does bother me, or at least it did that they removed the mini boost from MKWii you can get when placed back on the track after falling off. Or is it still there and I've been doing it wrong all this time?
I felt the whole video could've been explained in 30seconds. Guess they need the time to get more money from YouTube
Why in the world did they never patch this in the original game? Maybe they didn't want to mess up time trial records or something, but it seems like too glaring a flaw to ignore.
The smart steering screwed with me my first 47 online races. Took me a minute to realize it kept me from taking some shortcuts.
@Snow-Dust The conclusion can be recited in less than 30 seconds. The video documents the experiments.
@Menchi187 You're always so negative. Try being happy for once, you might even like it.
@OorWullie It's no longer possible because recovery from falls is much faster than before. Low-acceleration karts will have to deal with the consequences instead of boosting to negate them (even worse with the standstill turbo in Wii).
@Menchi187 In all fairness, I have to say I've found Sligeach to be a bit more reasonable than a few other commenters who still take every opportunity to dump on the Switch. He loves his WiiU, and I get that. But this isn't the first time he's sent in tips about things that show the Switch in a positive light.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think with the amount of tips you post here the people at Nintendo life should either get you on the payroll or buy you a Switch outright. You do good stuff here.
@hiptanaka I can see the experiment part but I don't like how he tried to keep it a mystery until the very end of the video and how there is so much fluff in between
@Zyrac They most likely balanced the game with this issue, so they would have had to rebalance the game which would be quite a lot of work and would mess up things like time trials even more.
Better just leave it.
That's what I guess could be the reason.
@JasmineDragon @SLIGEACH_EIRE
Did you both miss the semi /s?
@JasmineDragon True that, you can see he's an honest Nintendo fan, even if we don't always agree. I would never put him on the same basket as some other trolls lurking here
Once again something I've never noticed but yeah, rounding down like that is rather stupid. Oh well, never actually kept me from driving the vehicles I thought looked cool.
@Snow-Dust I can confirm that a longer video does not make you more money from YouTube. A 30 second view & a 3 hour view are worth exactly the same.
@Menchi187 No, I did catch that. I just felt I ought to give Sligeach some public props.
But now there's a more annoying issue (For me, at least), when you try to enter a friend's race, if the room is full you've got a error message instead of it putting you in the queue
Just another reason for people to upgrade to Deluxe. I'm glad Nintendo put some thought into the port fixing even the tiny flaws of the original.
The article would probably have benefitted from either a direct comparison of MK8 to MK8DX acceleration, or a second video, similar to Abdallah's, but using MK8 to show the rounding in action.
I never knew about this, at least it's fixed though!
They are putting a lot of work into this title to make it a esport contender.
What I don't get, is how this accidentally made it into the game in the first place. It's more work/code to round the numbers down to a whole number, than to simply use the exact stat... so that's a little odd.
They could have patched the Wii U version, too.
I always thoughts all stats rounded down. This is great news!
Finally the acceleration gliders might actually get some use.
@Moms-Meowth @JasmineDragon
How do we get the Switch for @SLIGEACH_EIRE campaign started? He deserves something.
This may seem like a small issue, but it absolutely drove me crazy on Wii U.
Thanks NL! This is really great to know. The acceleration stat always affects what vehicle combo I pick.
@BlueKnight07 Petreon, Go fund me, Fundfraizer, I'm not entirely sure otherwise
@SuperCharlie78 This issue is unacceptable. If it's not fixed before online subscription, it will fail miserably.
Played the game and never noticed it haha
this was an issue in all of the past mario kart games. however with them fixing this issue; they created a new one.
for those who use the boost at the start of the race may notice that at times it may be easier or harder to create.
and i also noticed another issue. it seems to be harder to get a mini boost once you get back on the track after falling off.
however, it is nice that they kept the timings for these two things at a stand value for the past many years. yet, at the same time, it is nice that they updated the game to make the boost, speed, and acceleration values different across the different characters in terms of the different weight classes. it kind of adds additional strategy to the in one way or another.
Didn't know about this bug and I find it ridiculous that it wasn't fixed before.
Honestly, I just pick my kart based on looks; but for those that noticed the differences, I am glad they fixed it!
Oh nice! I actually always thought ALL stats rounded down, not just acceleration. Never understood why they'd have increments at all, if they rounded it all down anyway.
I honestly don't notice much of a difference in most of the stats. The different classes HANDLE differently, and you can learn the handling by feel, but the numbers never really seem to mean much to me.
Also that beautiful, beautiful shot of the MK8 cartridge....it's just a beautiful sight.
@DanteSolablood but the longer your video and keeping the audience stay to watch, the more likely you'll get recommended onto the top list. Game/film theory has 1 episode al about it
@something17 haha same here!
Never even noticed this to be honest.
Never noticed...
@Snow-Dust How old was that video, I know the algorithm had a major overhaul in the last few months making daily/frequent content more valuable than long content... hence a lot of videos are sticking closer to the 10/15 minute mark now.
If I'm wrong however, my apologies. I still doubt money would be the reason behind the video length simply due to this YouTuber's notoriety.
Hmm, interesting. "Mario Kart 7" does something similar and with almost all the stats, except the .75 mark is part of the next tier.
As one of the very few hardicroe Mario Kart fans here, I very much appreciate this. I just got the game and my Switch and I'm loving them both so far!
@SuperCharlie78 Same issue. Are you able to join friends properly at all though?
@xPH03N1Xx86 I joined a friend just once, all the other times I failed. Time to fix this mess Nintendo!
