Nintendo's official Japanese website has begun displaying a notice above some of its 3DS models that speaks doom for some of the variants.
The message translates to:
Production is slated to end shortly
It seems Nintendo is really trying to push the New 3DS into the hands of the Japanese public, and by reducing the number of colours available on the older units, there'll be little choice for the fashionably minded than to buy the newer system. The Japanese audience were privy to many colours that we in The West were not, but with the New 3DS' Kisekae Plates we should be able to have more customisation than we know what to do with.
See the message for yourself by clicking here. There's no word at the moment as to whether similar matters will be taken into effect in other regions.

I guess it's a good decision so people buy the New models instead of the original ones.
Bring it on, i'm ready for New Nintendo 3DS!
These should have been discontinued the moment the new ones released in Japan.
The fact that the LL w/o the faceplates has been consistently outselling the smaller new 3DS by a large margin shows size does matter more than color.
It may be discontinued but I still think it'll be under services and such. I mean the original DS was still under service even after the DS Lite showed up.
I love the XL but if only the audio was as loud as the 3DS, I'd love it more! Hopefully the new 3DS XL does just that!
makes sense
Can't say im surprised
I have the red and also blue 3dsXL but if these colors were sold in North America Nintendo might make a small fortune with these choices. Who knows when the 'New 3ds' will make it to North America . Nintendo... Sell these colors in North America now and make a bundle. I'm ready to purchase.😉
Oooh Interesting. Weird to see my favourite little console become outdated.
I'm guessing since majoras mask 3d is getting a new nintendo 3ds VERSION, other countries might have it stopped at least after spring
The New 3DS systems are far greater than the old ones anyway, progress is a good thing in this instance.
What? Some older models get replaced when new ones come along? (the new 3DS being basically the same). Mind = Blown.
At this point there should only be the 2DS, New 3DS and New 3DS XL. Anything other than that is just needlessly confusing things. Actually, it would make sense to release a New 2DS that has the extra buttons etc of the other New models and just get rid of the regular 2DS.
But who am I to suggest such things that seem to make a lot of sense. I'm just some dude sitting at a computer typing on the Internet. I probably have nothing worthwhile to contribute.
@Kirk To be honest, I would love if they did a New 2DS! My eyes hurt when I use the 3D, so that does not matter to me, and I think the 2DS is the most comfortable model when it comes to holding it and playing it for extended periods. I love my 2DS, and my brother has also bought one as well, mostly due to the lower price.
A New 2DS with the form factor of the 2DS, but with the new features would be awesome, and would allow Nintendo to put out a cheaper model for budget minded gamers.
Hell, I would suggest they just skip the New 3DS and have a New 2DS and New 3DS XL be the models they bring to the west. It seems like the New 3DS is not selling as well as the others, and that model is redundant quite frankly.
A New 2DS could appeal to budget-minded gamers while a new 3DS XL could be for gamers who want fancy features like 3D and a larger screen.
@Caryslan
No; don't frikin leave out the New 3DS! That's the best of all the models to me! lol
new and old 3ds price-wise are in a very similar category so obviously potential customer will go for new 3ds. no point in producing those anymore
If the New models are priced comparably to the older ones, I see no reason to continue producing the outdated models.
Well considering that generally the oder gen systems gets discontinued after new systems released can't say I'm supprised.
They should just make New 3DS XL with those colors as options. So they keep the design alternatives while offering a better, more complete product.
Compare and contrast with some other old Nintendo portables, the GBA SP and the GBA Micro lost some features from the previous models (SP had no standard headphone jack, Micro couldn't play original GB/C games) and the DSi also lost features of the earlier DS models (not being able to run GBA games being the most important). In those cases, the older models were allowed to stick for years because the old exclusive features were preferred over the new by some. In the 3DS case, the vanilla models have not a single exclusive feature, so the idea was replacing them ASAP.
Not surprised.
They are capable of making content the older versions can't handle and this is meant to revivify the line instead of close it out. No sense maintaining the older units.
Likely ending the royalties being paid out to Tomita Tech
They should discontinue all of the original 3DS and XL models so that there is no confusion for the average consumer. I want my New 3DS XL already!
About time. The sooner they allocate those resources for the New 3DS the sooner we get it in the west.
@Yomerodes "In the 3DS case, the vanilla models have not a single exclusive feature, so the idea was replacing them ASAP."
For 1st party products, yes, but if we include 3rd party products, the original 3DS has an option to offer by far the greatest battery power of any model by several times! I'll take an old 3DS that can run for 48 hours over a new 3DS that can run for 7 hours, thank you! We can talk about new features all day, but if the battery life sucks, they're all for naught.
I think this is all that needs to be said: The Game Gear's battery life was longer than the 3DS battery life, and as long as the New 3DS battery life! Didn't people used to complain that the GG's battery life sucked compared to the Game Boy? What happened to the days of Nintendo portable consoles lasting for 24 hours? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpfvy_iZxCc (bad language in video, though)
I have the blue one that is in the top right so i hope it doesn't get discontinued in north america for a good while.
Well, I'm not gonna miss these bricks.
But I agree with @Kirk on the matter: just kick the old devices out of the shelves, make a New2DS, and be done with it, Nintendo! I can't even count how many times I had to explain the meaning of "New3DS" to others anymore.
