Most Popular WiiWare Games in North America (18th June)

Posted by Darren Calvert

It’s Wednesday again, time to look at what the most popular games are in the Wii Shop. To check for yourself simply log on to your Wii Shop channel, go into the WiiWare section and then view “Popular Games”. We are checking the North American list, so if you live elsewhere your list will probably be a lot different. Feel free to post your findings below as always.

Here is the list for 18th June:

1 (3) - My Pokémon Ranch
2 (1) - Dr Mario Online Rx
3 (2) - Defend your Castle
4 (4) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
5 (5) - TV Show King
6 (7) - LostWinds
7 (6) - Family Table Tennis
8 (8) - Toki Tori
9 (10) - Protöthea
10 (9) - Pop
11 (11) - V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack
12 (N) - Block Breaker Deluxe
13 (N) - Cocoto Fishing Master
14 (13) - Critter Round-Up
15 (12) - Star Soldier R

N denotes a new entry

There is no surprise that Pokémon Ranch and Dr Mario rank so highly in the chart. Nintendo could release a WiiWare game called “Mario’s big turd” and gamers would flock to buy it, so let’s move on!

It is great to see Defend Your Castle so near the top still. Publishers pay attention, budget prices equal more downloads, which equals more money! LostWinds going up a place after all this time is encouraging too, some people are catching up with it a few weeks later.

This Monday’s new games make an appearance at the bottom of the charts. It will be interesting to see how they do when we look again next Wednesday. Poor old Star Soldier R, it’s not looking good! Even Protöthea is ahead of you. Will you be gone forever when this chart goes beyond 20 entries?

Wow! CFM actually made it above Star Soldier R? For shame.

Agreed. Toki Tori DESERVES better!

MPR does not surprise me. I read that it has like 40,000 sales Worldwide. That's a lot. It's also predictable.

Dr. Mario has almost 30,000. MPR has probably had the greatest/fastest scuccess of any other WiiWare title to date.

TV Show King is still up there! That's quite impressive.

And I'm saddened to see Protothea ahead of Pop. Protothea should be at the very bottom, quite honestly.

Anyways. It's nice to get the update.

I'll give you Toki, but I haven't played LW since launch. Bro bought it for me and it's one of the most boring games I've ever played.

Peznaze said:

Interesting how the two new games debut two days after launch beating both Critter Round Up and Star Soldier R. Nobody wants those games, apparently.

Toki Tori should continue to climb a bit, I'd hope Family Table Tennis will drop now the Nintendo Channel tells you it's meant for small children...

I still don't get TV Show King, but then the success of Carnival Games was a mystery to me, too.

Bring Defend your Castle to Europe !!!
Off-topic: I think Nintendo should release a game called "Dr Mario rounds up Pokemon poo" and it should be a pingpong game
that would sell

KnucklesSonic8 said:

Peznaze = Trust me. TV Show King is big for this market.
Family Table Tennis = Who knows. I was even considering a purchase sometime.

And don't say "nobody" wants "those games", because I have both Critter Round-Up and Star Soldier R. xD

I get what you mean, though, and quite frankly, I'm not surprised that Critter Round-Up is at the very bottom because I'm sure many realize that the 1000-Point price tag is not justified when you compare it to the other offerings on the service (i.e., what you could get for 1000 instead).

But I guess Protothea's success is lended by the fact that there seems to be quite a few space-shooter fans in the market. Too bad they probably didn't know what they were getting into. I imagine most were disappointed. I'm gonna check the Ninty Channel later to see how people find it... oh wait... I just put it on SD Card yesterday, needing the space. >_>

Wow. My Pokemon Ranch is awful.

I'm glad to see Defend Your Castle so high up there, though,

KnucklesSonic8 said:

Be that as it may, Pokemon is a HUGE money-maker for Nintendo. Everyone should be accustomed to that now.

Glad I broke free of PKMN and all its affiliates years ago... Err... okay, maybe not its affiliates since that would include the very same first-party company that made gaming what it is today. Heh.

Cocoto Fishing master sold more than Star Soldier R? That's shameful

Jazzem said:

Toki Tori should be doing better But if it stays around that position for a while without dropping significantly I'll be happy with that. I just want a sequel!

Loooca said:

Wow, it saddens me that My Pokémon Ranch gets to be first while a wonderful game like Toki Tori is still stuck at 8. It shows that whatever Pokemon game will get sold no matter what, eh? Even plot-less ones!

Wiireview123 said:

:/ MPR at #1. it just goes to show that everyone likes what they know and dont want to really try anything new. but it's great to see DYC at #3.

@Gavin Rozee: i second that!

Kawaiipikachu said:

Well pokémon always sell no matter what .

I suprised that ffcc: mlaak didn;t get second place .

But still i look forward to Wiiware .

I get the feeling that someone bribed their way to #1 this week. I'm looking at you Pokemon.

Chipmunk777 said:

Wow.... Pokemon Ranch at no. 1? Ridiculous.... Also, how are the two piss-poor shovelware titles that got released monday ABOVE Star Soldier R?

StarDust4Ever said:

Chipmunk777: Nobody wants a shooter game that has a max time limit of five minutes. The object of the genre is to destroy enemies without being destoyed, and survive long enough to reach the next round, not "let's see who can score the most points/ advance the farthest in five minutes." In fact, none of the "new" shooter games have anything in terms of game play on the old TG16 titles, except for maybe better graphics and bloated file size. I bought Blazing Lazers b/c people said it was easy, but man that game is INTENSE! Sometime I'll have to try out those invincibility cheats I read online (Google it).

Oh, and I think Critter Round up is 2 dollar shovelware that should have been priced at 499 points or less, but instead got 1000. Lazy developers to start with, then they got greedy and now they will lose money because nobody buys it because it sucked and was priced to high. The peeps behind D.Y.C. were much wiser, and well, you reap what you sow.

Greetings form Brazil, June 19th, 2008

For lack of nothing better to do with my Wii (boredom), I swapped my country setting to brazil.

So here is the Brazillian/ South Ameica list:
#1 My Pokemon Ranch (no surprise there)
#2 Lost Winds
#3 Dr Mario Online (updated???)
#4 Family Table Tennis
#5 Final Fantasy Crystal Cronicles: My Life as a king
#6 Defend Your Castle
#7 Toki Tori
#8 Protothea
#9 Pop
#10 Block Breaker Deluxe
#11 TV Show King (right where it belongs, in my opinion)
#12 Star Soldier R
#13 Cocoto Fishing
#14 V.I.P. Casino
#15 Critter Roundup

Okay, now to switch back to US and relink "My Nintendo" account, before I screw up my Everybody Votes profile, or do something else equally dumb. BTW, I believe my fellow Aussies can switch their settings over to the UK (same principal, I think) to enable downloads of V.C. goodies currently unavailable to them...

Dazza said:

Warning: Aussies, if you change region you will lose any Wii points you have unused. Wait until you get to zero points, then change to the UK.

Actually, its more than that. Its 40,000 sales logged by the Nintendo channel. Considering there are pleanty of members here who don't use the Nintendo channel...but its impossible to say for sure how many people don't have the Nintenod chanel and what number got Pokemon Rant (or anything else for that matter) but we know its at least 40,000 for certain...

Anyway lots of people saying new game is selling more than old game. Well yes, that happens. Just because Pootothea sold more than Pop in whatever time frame the charts are based on (probably a month looking at how stale the VC charts are) doesn't mean its sold more than Pop in lifetime sales. The same might hold for Star Soldier R...

Bensei said:

@Dazza: What if a European wants to buy Axelay by switching to Australia? Will there happen the same?

I haven't thought Pokémon Ranch would rank that highly, I guess we'll soon see it in Europe

Star Soldier R deserves not to be last... T-T

Objection said:

Who the hell keeps buying the crappy games?! You can't do anything in Rnach and Star Soldier is much better than Protothea, 5 minutes long or not! And of course all my games are way too low-LW, Toki Tori, etc.

KnucklesSonic8 said:

Oh and for the record, Chipmunk: Block Breaker Deluxe is not "poor" by any means.

And yes, Star Soldier beats the high-score-less Protothea any day.

blackknight77 said:

Thats a shame Star Soldier is not higher. It makes me wonder if the warning screen before you download it is scaring people away. Also Hudson should publisize more tournaments. It may help

@pApEr y0sh!

He's talking about Dr. Mario, but I'm sure you already know that. As for the avatars, I was wondering the same thing, never found a good time to ask, until now. Seriously, how do you add put those little picture thingys to your posts? I've tried "edit profile" and don't know what to do from there.

Never mind, that was easy, it just requires pictures that you've saved on your computer(I didn't have any, but thankfully VG Cats had a whole section dedicated to avatars).

"Edit Profile" is under "My Account" at the top, by the way.
