the irony of "if I didn't know better" is that the vast majority of the time what the person means is that they admit that they do not know better and are assuming exactly what they are saying

Because 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, New SMB 2 and Monster Hunter really killed the sales potential of their respective non-portable counterparts. Remember when New SMB on DS moved 29mill units completely destroying the ability for New SMB Wii to move more than 27mill? Such a bad strategy. Right? I mean imagine how well New SMB Wii would have sold if the first one hadn't killed its sales....

Seriously guys, this is Smash. Smash is a game that moves systems regardless of what platform it's on. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. If anything them putting it on the 3DS first has saved the 3DS version. If the Wii U version had come out first I probably wouldn't have been interested in the 3DS version at all. Because Smash is a party game first. Putting it on the 3DS first? I want to get my hands on it now so I'll get it in whatever form I can. However I also need a version I can put up on my TV.

There's no way a game moves 1mill copies in Japan in one weekend on 3DS and then a Wii U version comes out that everyone ignores. No way at all. Especially when it's a game that is best experienced on a big TV, with a couch, some beverages and a few buddies. I don't want to have to only be playing it with guys who have a 3DS and have it on them. I also want it to be a spectacle in the way that Mario Kart 8 is but Mario Kart 7 never is. And I really don't think I'm in the minority in thinking that.

If anything the "less dedicated" smash players will skip the 3DS version and just wait for a reason to grab a Wii U. It's the people who were always going to get Smash on the Wii U who have been dragged into getting the 3DS version also. At least outside of Japan....

This isn't the kind of game that sells good when it comes out and then disappears forever. It's the kind of game that sells decent throughout the year and year after year continues to sell big numbers during the holiday season. I don't have unrealistic expectations for this game, but it will definitely will sell well.

The week ending September 20th, about 144,000 current gen home consoles were sold in North America. 22,000 current gen handhelds sold in the same time period.

Why are there people seriously doubting the appeal of the home console version of Smash in the West?

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

In Japan, yes. In other countries? I don't know.

3D World is not 3D Land, it's a sequel. Mario Kart 8 is not Mario Kart 7, it's a sequel, NSMBU is not NSMB2, it's a sequel, NSMBWii is not NSMBDS, it's a sequel. Smash Bros 3DS and Smash Bros Wii U are the same game releasing in the same releasing around the same time, so not many people will buy the same game twice.

To be fair even in the US Nintendo's portables have generally sold more than their console equivalents. It's just the nature of a portable console, they're a personal rather than a home device. Even if it's hard to compare how Gameboy lines up against three consoles the GBA beat the GC and the DS beat the Wii in all regions. That said, portable versions of Nintendo's big games haven't stopped the console versions from selling. Mario Kart 7 for example was basically Mario Kart perfection IMO but that didn't stop me or anyone else from being hyped about Mario Kart 8. Smash isn't any different even if the versions are closer together.

Monster Hunter Tri DS is not the same as Monster Hunter Tri Wii or Wii U... oh wait. Seriously, if those games as similar as they are don't put even the slightest dent in enthusiasm for the home console versions? There's no way that Smash sales are going to tank on Wii U because there's a 3DS version. I didn't buy the Wii U version of Mario Kart so I could play the new courses. I got it because I wanted Mario Kart on my TV running in HD.

I'm skipping the 3DS version and going straight to the Wii U version. Not interested in wrecking my 3DS.

To answer this topic, will it affect the Wii U's sale? Absolutely. Whoever saying otherwise is either high or ignorant. But will it affect a lot? Not really imo. The Wii U version will be the definitive version with a lot of Wii U only perks. The Wii U version will not sell as well if it were a Wii U only exclusive, but you need to understand, Nintendo makes money from the 3DS too

I'm not exactly sure how you play games on your 3DS, but I can assure you anybody playing the game normally won't wreck their system.

On a scale of massive to nothing I'd say the impact will be much closer to the latter. I'm sure it'll have some kind of impact but I don't think it'll be drastic or even necessarily negative. It could theoretically have a positive impact on Wii U sales in the same way that the portable Zeldas are a "gateway game" for some people to grab more meatier Zelda experiences. Having people rave about Smash Bros in general will be have a positive impact on sales for both versions. Especially given how nice the 3DS version is, it could easily convert people on the idea of the game which may end with them being pushed towards the Wii U.

But if it was the other way around? The Wii U version would have hammered the chances of the 3DS version doing well. I think they got it the right way around.

I think it would have been better for them to release only a Wii U version. All of that hype would be focused directly on the Wii U, and Smash would do as it always does, going through the roof and selling Wii Us. However, with the release of the 3DS version, the common man will already have SSB4, and won't want to pay $360 to buy a Wii U and Smash. He'll be content with what he has.

I mean, it will obviously have some impact on sales. You have to be blind to think that no one will just opt for the 3DS version.

But I don't think it will cut sales by more than 25%. And in the long run, this is a better strategy for Nintendo's bottom line.

You have kind of made that statement 3 times already. How about waiting and see what the Wii U version has to offer first? (Which probably will not be revealed until the initial weeks of 3DS sales have passed.) Regarding "content with what he has", don't you think there's a remote possibility that the "content" 3DS user actually might feel ripped off in the end?
