I don't think Smash Bros is a system seller, so no, I don't think this will hurt. Additionally, most people know that, as deep and fleshed out the 3DS version is, the "real" version is for Wii U. I personally (and obviously I speak for no one but myself) do not care for the 3DS version at all. I will not be buying it now or ever. I will eventually get the Wii U version. I think most people that have both Wii U and 3DS will do what I do. Only the hardiest of the hardcore will get both. But if they have to chose, most gamers will get the real, Wii U, version.
I like what you said but I just can't imagine seeing a 3DS owner buying the 3DS version...then buying a Wii U for the Wii U version. I just can't see many people doing that and that saddens me. I think all those 3DS only users will be content with just owing the 3DS version and will not buy a Wii U for Smash Wii U.
Well, I actually said I don't think Smash Bros is a system seller to begin with, so I don't think people that would have gotten a Wii U for Smash won't because of the 3DS version. I don't think people will get a Wii U for Smash, period. Not for Smash alone.
Again, speaking for myself only here, but if I only had a 3DS, I wouldn't get Smash. I have a 3DS and a Wii U, and I won't get the 3DS version of the game. Ever. If I get the game (which I plan to eventually) it will be the Wii U version, period. If I didn't have a Wii U, I wouldn't get a Wii U just to play Smash.
Smash will be a big hit on the Wii U, because the people who like Smash like Smash. The people who really like Smash, but only enough to get one version will get the Wii U version. The über hardcore will get both (I have a friend who is planning on doing just that, and GuSolarFlare already said he is doing the same thing). If a person only has a 3DS and wants Smash that badly would get the 3DS version anyways. I've never met anyone that has gotten a console just to play Smash.
I'm sure there is someone out there for whom Smash is enough to warrant the purchase of a Wii U, but I have never met him/her.
I totally understand what you're saying. I really do. I agree with multiple things you said but I think Smash Wii U is actually of high caliber like Mario Kart 8 was and what Legend of Zelda U can do for sales for the Wii U. I mean like... actual games that can push Wii U sales up a bump. I think Smash Wii U would sell pretty decent if there wasn't a 3DS version but that's just me.
I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

I think a good comparison of the 3DS and Wii U versions (sales wise) would be to compare a games initial release and its GOTY release. Everyone knew there was going to be a GOTY edition of Skyrim before the initial release, this meant that people had a choice; buy the first version or wait for the superior version. You will run find some collectors that buy both versions or people that didn't want to buy the DLC individually. For the most part more people buy the initial release. Even though people knew the GOTY edition would be better, people still bought the initial release version. (This isn't an exact match of situations, because of DLC mostly, but it is close enough to see what will happen) So the Wii U version will come out and most people will wonder why they should buy it. Unless Nintendo's Marketing can really drive home the point of the Wii U version being the must have and the 3DS version being just a taste then we will probably see the Wii U version sell decently while the 3DS version sells much better and pushes more 3DS consoles than Wii Us.
I get what you're saying. Well... Nintendo needs to start advertising the Wii U version like immediately after the 3DS version launch happens. I just KNOW the Wii U version will be better but can Nintendo convince the general public to buy a Wii U or just Smash Wii U???? Its saddens me to say this but even if Nintendo were to market Smash Wii U like crazy... I just can't imagine it breaking huge sales... Its kinda bizarre cuz games like Destiny were marketed like crazy and sold super well and Smash Wii U hasn't really been marketed like crazy and we don't know the outcome for sales for that game yet....

Thing is, the 3DS version is a personal Smash experience. You can't play multiplayer with one copy of the game, apart from playing online. There's no download play. You need another player to have a 3DS of their own to be able to fight with them.
The Wii U version, all you need is extra controllers and the game.
It's sold more than 1.5 million in Japan. So what if it sells less on the Wii U
As of right now... I'm a Wii U only owner and a Nintendo fan at heart. I want the Wii U to sell well because it DESERVES to sell well. It has its flaws and problems but I still want the console to sell well. Its not garbage and it has really great games on it. I don't expect Smash Wii U to sell like crazy at all UNLESS it gets advertised like the must buy holiday game of all time.
At this point, even miracles won't make it sell well.

So there's no hope for Smash Wii U?

I don't think the 3DS version will hurt the Wii U sales because they're not the same. It's not like Skyrim plus DLC vs Skyrim GOTY. It's like a game for a handheld and then a game for a console. Different game, different platform, no matter how similar they may be.
I say again, people who are only getting one version are getting the Wii U version. I think very few people who own both a 3DS and a Wii U are only getting the 3DS version.
If the 3DS version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate significantly outsold the Wii U version (outside of Japan), this might be an issue, but otherwise I can't see a handheld version of a fighting game taking off without the console version doing the same.
How is a version offering different content killing another version ? Its like saying 3D Lands ealier release endangered 3D Worlds later appearance.
Both versions share the character Roster and a few Stages and modes. Other than that, both offer unique content. And any enthusast will definitly pick the WiiU Version over the 3DS version anyways, if only for the far more stable online experience.
The 3DS version was finished first, so they released it earlier. If they held it back for a simultaneus release, people also would have cried.
At this point, whatever they are doing, its wrong.

Probably not. The die hard fans will buy both copies and people who don't have a 3DS or want it more on Wii U will buy this also and not the 3DS version.
I for one plan on getting the WIi U version only. Maybe down the road I will get the 3DS but more then likely not.

I have talked to two XBone owners- both say that Smash will make the Wii U worth while to buy. They might not get it immediately but they are at least considering it now. Both said they would for sure have one for Zelda and this. I think this will move systems, but not as much as we'd like to see.
One variable is, besides the graphics, how much better will the Wii U be? Just a few extra stages?
I think Smash Brothers 4 3DS release could impact the sales of the Wii U release. It's pretty much $40 vs. $60 for basically the same game. Most people are going to go right for the cheaper option, and if that release satisfies them then I can easily imagine them skipping the Wii U edition. Personally speaking, if I really end up enjoying Smash Brothers 4 on the 3DS, I can't see myself picking up the Wii U installment.

I think it was a smart decision. There's a lot of hype for the 3DS version and that hype will carry over towards the Wii U version. If it were the other way around, everyone would be enjoying the Wii U version and when the 3DS version comes out it will seem bland compared to the Wii U version. Everyone knows the Wii U version will be superior, so it's better to save the best for last.
OF COURSE everyone knows the Wii U version will be superior... but will they BUY IT if they can get the 3DS version without even buying a Wii U?
Far superior sales of far inferior 3DS versions of Nintendo franchises hint that many people WON'T be buying the Wii U version, sadly. I've even seen people claiming the 3DS version will be superior. Yep, people are THAT delusional and that desperate to have a reason NOT to buy a Wii U. Smash Bros. WOULD have been a system seller as an exclusive, but if you give people who'll only buy systems to play what every other cool-kid is playing, an alternate version on that popular system you're going to have a huge gouge out of your sales. I've even seen people try to claim PS All Stars as a viable substitute for Smash Bros...poor, delusional souls.
Will it still do pretty well? Absolutely. The Wii U version will be superior. Period. By the time the Wii U version releases with more modes, levels, control schemes, better online, and Amiibo support, some people will be ashamed they were ever anticipated bare-bones add-ons like Smash Run.
