Let's ask ourselves this when Dragon Quest X is out on Wii U. /thread.

Until Razr starts making Wii U mice, the CPU(s) and graphics card/chip(s)/whatever are upgradeable, and they come out with a Wii U keyboard, there's no way any established PC-based MMO will thrive on the Wii U. Any MMOs on the system would have to be built for the Wii U from the ground up in order to have a snowball's chance at success.

People that play MMO's don't get any action... Do you want to be one them? didn't think so. Just leave that genre for the PC heads while you steal away their potential love interests they will never realise anyway.

No console will ever substitute a PC for MMO's, I love my Wii U, but the thought of playing Warcraft on it.........just No!!

I dunno. I don't own a Wii U, but I've played a couple and they don't seem a perfect fit for MMOs. Currently I've clocked in a little over 2 hours a day on Guild Wars 2 and it REALLY needs the computers hotkeys, but it COULD work if the right control scheme was given. I have 13 hotkeys I use in the midst of battle, and I doubt the Wii U has enough buttons to comfortably use all 13 attacks, and the jump button. The Touchscreen would work for the (G)uild, (H)ero, and (I)nventory shortcuts but the rest are middle-of-battle attacks, that you need to be using in the middle of battle.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

aaaaargh !

Consoles can use frecklin usb keyboards! Yes, even even the Wii!

The PS3 supported Bluetooth Keyboard AND mouse and I wouldn't be surprised if the 360 supports at least usb.s

And - oh noes 11111 - the Wii U supports usb keyboard as well!

Right, forget all the stupid arguments about multi-touch and keyboards - input devices aren't necessarily the problem - it's people getting their heads out of their butts and thinking differently, for crying out loud!

And don't bring up 'but what about the cables' because I'm sure some wireless usb devices would work.

Get serious, think differently and post why, as a player of this genre, you think you wouldn't play this sort of game in the lounge-room for any other reason than habit...

Maybe we should stop thinking PC-based MMOs, and start thinking MMOs designed with consoles in mind? That seems to be the more logical route of thought here, and would eradicate this whole mouse/keyboard/multi-touch/glove fiasco.

Please, let them leave the MMO genre alone, I don't want consoles messing up another genre that PC gamers love (even if not all of us). We don't need more stuff dumbed down.

In this thread alone I can see why MMOs aren't ported to the Wii U or any other home console for that matter. Dedicated people who play MMOs like myself seem like they wont touch it on a home console and its seems as I see in this thread not to many home console players are that keen on MMOs. Take that proof to a major MMO company like Blizzard or SoE and they can see that it wont be a money maker.

In the past several MMOs have been tried to be ported to home consoles Age of Conan, Champions Online and a few others and all have been cancelled, so right there that should show you how the companies feel about porting MMOs.

@TBD: I can see Razr doing that heck they had all kinds of accesories for the Wii like tennis racquets, and golf clubs, and even light sabers. As far as the upgrading graphics card go wouldn't that go against Nintendo's anti modding policy?

Yes, because the entire MMO genre belongs to PC gamers alone, not so? Just as the entire fitness genre in video-games belongs to Nintendo, because they instigated it.

I thought a console based MMO was what we were talking about in the first place, not a PC port or spin off. That's the problem. Developers don't make MMO games for consoles(at least good ones according to MMO fans), and fans automatically rule it out by default. You can not say that a Wii U MMO is not possible, with the only reasoning being that there's not a mouse or weak graphics processor, because then your just neglecting the idea of a console based MMO which was the idea in the first place.

It's not that the genre belongs to PC gamers (such as myself) it's that it works best on the console. Could you make an FPS on 3DS without the circle pad pro? Sure. Would it be easier to just swap it over to Vita? Yes. You can make it work, but it would be different than the standard formula, and I'm all for that, but it could either work great, or be unplayable. It's much easier to go with a much more tried and true formula like the PC. Keyboards have lots of hotkeys, which MMO's need.

1) No developer is going to make a game for a console that requires players buy a keyboard first. The install base would be far too low to justify it, considering the expense involved in actually producing an MMO. The industry learned its lesson there with Final Fantasy XI on the PS2.

2) Any MMO a developer makes for a console (or tablet) is therefore going to be limited by comparison to what the PC MMOs offer. This means that people with PCs won't bother touching the console MMOs (reducing the audience), and the simple fact that the console MMOs are not as good as the PC versions will turn legions of other gamers off as well. It's not that there aren't MMOs on consoles or tablets already. There are. But they're just not that great, and that has more to do with the platform than the developers.

And adding a single-touch-only screen into the mix is not going to fix that.

y'know, as long as we're talking console MMO.... I'm honestly reminded of Xenoblade, since it was so obviously MMO-inspired. I shudder to think how much time i'd be willing to spend playing an MMO based on Xenoblade. I already put 100 hours into the main Xenoblade game, i absolutely loved the battle system (once i got used to it... and it took a LOT of getting used to, i'll admit). I'd love to play another game that handled the exact same way, subscription fee or no.

"Hey guys! Let's act as if a blanket term is its own genre and argue about whether or not it should/could be done on a game console!"

That's basically this thread in a nutshell.

Slight Cynicism Aside: Simply put, the traditional MMORPG should probably not be made for the Wii U. The system does not have enough buttons on its controllers to support the enormous amount of actions which are available (and occasionally required) to play that type of game. Now, that doesn't say anything for the possibility of the Wii U having an MMO title created for it. The last decade of games aping World of Warcraft has made people forgot that MMO is a term that describes any game in any genre that happens to have a large amount of players playing online in a single world simultaneously. For instance, the forgotten MAG could easily be classified as an MMO title, with 256 individual players being able to play simultaneously on one map at a single time.

In short: Stop using a blanket term to describe a sub-genre of games and I believe that the Wii U should not have a traditional MMORPG made for it, mostly because of the lack of a adequate control scheme.

The bit about nintendo stating they wheren't even trying to match the other 2 systems this gen in terms of online never mind the next, doesn't make me think wii u is going to become the place for MMO's any time soon.

I think an MMO would work just fine on the Wii U. I think it would be awesome, even more so than probably the PS3 or Xbox 360 due to the keyboard function on the Gamepad (I know you can use the keyboard for 360 or use USB keyboard on PS3, but this is more convenient IMO). Now, I don't see an MMO where you can play it off screen completely on the Gamepad, hell no... but one that is built to have the primary screen as the TV while offering secondary features on the gamepad would be awesome to see.

PC will still be the primary platform for MMOs until the end of the genre, which I never see coming.

As far as an MMO on a tablet/iPad/etc — this does not work well IMO. I have been playing the hell out of Final Fantasy Dimensions and Final Fantasy Tactics lately on my iPhone 5, and although those are "serious & hardcore" games, they're not as functional on a full blown touchscreen as they would be on say a 3DS, PSP, or home console.

Just my two cents guys.

I think this is exactly what consoles needed for an MMO. The controls are so complex that having a persistent touch-based menu system on your Gamepad is exactly what the doctor ordered.

MMOs aren't an all-time pinnacle of consoles. You wouldn't know that. We haven't seen it. You can't just dismiss the idea based on an incomplete ideology. End of argument.

I think people are confusing the MMO genre for the RTS genre. Which, would work with the Wii U unlike MMOs.

Just for you.
