Topic: Wii U: The Perfect System For MMOs?

Posts 61 to 75 of 75

You couldn't port over a PC MMO onto the Wii U (and still have it be good).

I think we've answered the question of this thread, which is that no, the Wii U is not the perfect system for MMOs, generally speaking.

I do believe, however, that if the people were there to buy it and play it, the Wii U could have a good MMO, as long as it was made from the ground up for the Wii U, like @theblackdragon said.

1) No developer is going to make a game for a console that requires players buy a keyboard first. The install base would be far too low to justify it, considering the expense involved in actually producing an MMO. The industry learned its lesson there with Final Fantasy XI on the PS2.

2) Any MMO a developer makes for a console (or tablet) is therefore going to be limited by comparison to what the PC MMOs offer. This means that people with PCs won't bother touching the console MMOs (reducing the audience), and the simple fact that the console MMOs are not as good as the PC versions will turn legions of other gamers off as well. It's not that there aren't MMOs on consoles or tablets already. There are. But they're just not that great, and that has more to do with the platform than the developers.

And adding a single-touch-only screen into the mix is not going to fix that.

No one is saying you would HAVE to buy a keyboard, it would just be an option for 'hardcore' fans of the genre. There could even be local multiplayer in the game if they did it right... From your perspective(it seems), you don't want a MMO game on there for any reason. Just saying it's not possible is pretty much throwing in the towel, but alot of us would rather do the 'rope a dope' ala Muhammad Alli and still get an MMO. As I recall as well, people loved the heck out of Gears of War, even though it was a short game, and turned away alot of fps players, but in the end every one still liked it for the most part in some way or another<Who's to say we can't even have a 'smaller portion' of an MMO that is different in style and presentation than a regular MMO? It really depends on the developer who makes the game on whether it's good or not, so who's to say it would even be a smaller portion of an MMO? Lets stop worrying about PC MMO comparisons, and just get a dev to make a damn MMO that's good for Wii U, so that no one has to ask whether the Wii U is a good console to make MMOs on.

The difference there was that Gears of War was made from the ground up for the Xbox 360. Not the case for porting MMO's to the Wii U, which is what this thread was made for.

The biggest problem (outside of controls) with the idea of MMO's on consoles in general is that pretty much all fans of MMO's have PC's. That's not the case for other genres out there. The only truly excellent MMO's I can think of are all PC only. So why would someone put a ton of work into a game and maintain a serious server load for a game that may not even warrant the costs? The only game I can think of that did this was Dragon Quest X, and to a lesser extent FFXI (and that one had a much bigger PC following anyway).

Of couse, MMO's in the way we understand them means they can't really be better on a console than a PC. There's too much holding them back.

The thing is, our current understanding for what MMO's are means that the Wii U isn't the perfect console for MMO's. If we were talking hypothetically, then any system could be the best system for a genre because devs could come up with ways for it to work on the console. If we don't draw a line somewhere, then there's no point in arguing.

What if I want to use the gamepad for an MMO? Nevermind... MMO games will be on PC. End of discussion. THREAD LOCKED.

I really can't think of a better system to play an MMO on. The gamepad would be absolutely perfect for all of that clutter usually at the bottom of the computer or TV screen. What are your thoughts on this and how do you think games like World of Warcraft could benefit from the Wii U system?

It looks like to me the OP is indeed talking about porting MMOs to the Wii U. Right there he/she asks in the second sentence "What are your thoughts on this and how do you think games like World of Warcraft could benefit from the Wii U system."

Last time I checked WoW was only available on the PC so therefore it would have to be a port to the Wii U or another console. I guess they could do a spinoff or something for home consoles like Everquest did the PS2 but that is besides the point I am making.

Also said 'like' WoW, that doesn't mean WoW. It could mean WoW, but in this case it wouldn't be... at least from what every one says. If Nintendo(or any company for that matter) made an MMO, and did it right, it would be cool, and a great addition to the Wii U library. I don't play those kinds of games, because of subscriptions and loads of time needed to be 'good'. Let's just say that we HOPE, that an MMO comes to Wii U and it's actually good using the features and options we know Wii U can do, if done right. Plus free online, DLC, etc. PC doesn't exist in a Wii U MMO, except for router settings.

I thought a console based MMO was what we were talking about in the first place, not a PC port or spin off. That's the problem. Developers don't make MMO games for consoles(at least good ones according to MMO fans), and fans automatically rule it out by default. You can not say that a Wii U MMO is not possible, with the only reasoning being that there's not a mouse or weak graphics processor, because then your just neglecting the idea of a console based MMO which was the idea in the first place.

Exactly, thank you! When I created this thread, it was for pretty much a new type of MMO, that is played on a home console instead of just the PC. Think of people that don't have a powerful PC but have a home console. I have a really good feeling that Dragon Quest X is going to be really good and will set the standard for this new way to play MMOs on a home console.

Pokemon + MMO= pure epicness!

A pokemon mmo would beat world of warcraft and all other mmos. Its the game everyone wants but the makers of pokemon. Hell World of warcraft put "battle pets (aka as fake pokemon) in the new panda add on that just came out in 2012.

Come on Nintendo..... make a pokemon mmo!

Right just like Starwars: The Old Republic was going to beat WoW and before that Rift and before that Age of Conan and before that Warhammer Online. At this point the only thing that will beat WoW is WoW itself.

Well if that is the case than any console would be perfect for an MMO not just the Wii U. As long as it was built for the console in mind whether it is the Wii U, PS3 or Xbox 360. Heck even the 3DS and Vita.

I am thinking anything Pokemon related on the Wii U will use the NFC. Therefore, you are probably looking at a Skylanders-type game or a card-type game. It just makes sense for this to becoming if they built the NFC into it in the first place.

As for a true MMO on the Wii U, here in the states I'm just not sure how well it would go over. I am sure there will be people try the free to play variety, and I am sure they will fail. I think for it to be successful it would have to be first party with familiar characters, and that would be a stretch over here.

I personally think that if any videogame of this kind will be ever available on the Wii U, it'll be something "harmless" as Free Realms, the family MMORPG that's actually available on the Playstation Network...

The reason behind that is cause Free Realms is done by SoE, But yeah if Nintendo made their own like that it could work.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to give Guild Wars 2 a try with a gamepad. Those effing jumping puzzles nearly require it. This has more to do with my inadequacies as a PC gamer though. I just can't get with the whole "WASD" and strafing, etc. Give me a controller and I can platform all day.

I'd rather not see it on a current-gen (WiiU included) console though.
