I wouldn't say they suck, since I do think we all had higher hopes for the series than what they presented, but I think it's safe to say this'll be really fun regardless of how safe it is.
I experienced a huge range of emotions during that video.
OMG, Super Mario 3D land sequel! OMG, cat suit, soooo adorable! OMG playable Peach, yes!
Wii U? Oh no...
I LOVE Super Mario 3D Land, but... that's a handheld game. I was expecting so, so much more. I was expecting the scope of Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy. I'm sure I WILL enjoy the game when it arrives, but that was a bitter disappointment, and putting it nearly at the start like that just sort of ruined the whole direct for me.
I felt the same way.
I wanted something new but I would take Galaxy 3 over this.
I guess this is the price we pay for getting spoiled with two proper 3D Mario games last gen.
I dont think we were spoiled. I always expect a top notch game from the mainline Mario series and Nintendo usually delivers.
But like some have already said, I think Nintendo looked at the numbers when they made this decision.
Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

I like it because it looks fun. Simple as.
I feel people are asking or expecting too much.
Explain to me how you can get better than space anyway...
Exactly. You're all whining about how it's not as "majestic" or "creative" as Galaxy, but seriously, what could they possibly do next that would actually be so incredibly amazing? Something too different wouldn't feel like Mario.

Expecting too much? We're basically getting a 3DS port.
Even if it wasn't as good as Galaxy, fans still would have enjoyed another open world adventure. Sunshine is seen as the black sheep, and it's infinitely better than 3DW.

Why are you comparing anything to game that has literally just been revealed today? How do you actually do know how good it is?

I think it's a bit too early to write it off as basically a port, and it's definitely a matter of opinion whether Sunshine is better than 3DW. (Though I assume you meant 3D Land? Otherwise...how would you know?)
It's okay. Some folks are excited for this. They don't care whether it's better than Sunshine or Galaxy or anything else as long as it's fun, and if they think it looks like fun more power to them. They're not spending your money, so it's okay.
Everyone saying they want something like Galaxy, I personally would be disappointed with a Galaxy 3 or something too similar to such.
I think this game looks different and unique enough to be worth our while.
I do hope Nintendo will (and they most likely will) release another Mario game later on in the Wii U life cycle more akin to the past adventure-3D Mario games. As they said they would keep the NSMB games as one per system and I'm fairly certain Nintendo won't lay off the Mario games between now and the generation after this.
I would love to assume or even expect that; "Greater than Galaxy" would mean something along the lines of tying in near field communications and augmented reality to the Mario World.
I loved 3D Land, and I expect 3D World will be more than we expect at this point in time! 1st announcements usually only show us... very little.
Kitty Suit looks incredibly fun! My kids squealed with excitement watching Mario pounce and climb!
Playing as Peach is a feature long desired by many Mario fans also! Hell maybe now we can expect a Super Peach U DLC next with the ability to float long distances!
I think Nintendo has a solid grasp on what the Next Gen needs! But until the generation is inhaled by the popular consumer majority, I think us "fanboys" (yes I group myself in there) are just going to have to be patient for development!
I would of prefered galaxy 3 to this. Looks like a port from 3DS Mario land.
Actually it wouldn't surprise me if this started out as a 3DS game to begin with but the Nintendo bosses decided that the Wii-U needs more games so they changed it.
"NSMB Wii was also bundled, which I'm sure helped it out a lot. But even so, which game was more universally praised? NSMB Wii or the Galaxy games? "
Completely missing the point. Nintendo is not here to make "critically acclaimed" games, in so far as that is their only purpose. They are a business, and their only purpose is to generate revenue. Normally, critical acclaim = high sales, but not always. Just ask "Little Samson" from the NES and any other number of highly praised but poorly selling titles.
Whether you prefer Galaxy over the New series is a moot point. The consumer has spoken with their wallet - there is a market for both types of games (3D and 2D) Mario, but 2D, strictly in terms of sales (and that's what counts), move far more toward the "New" series than the 3D games. Nintendo can craft a 2D side scroller like no other, and it's not like the critics hated NSMBW. While yes I'd prefer to see some more innovation in the "New" side scrollers, for what they are (Mario side-scrollers), they are very fun games, if not entirely fresh by this point (but still well polished and sure to sell lots of units). For the foreseeable future we are going to get both types of game play.
You also need to put the Galaxy sales in perspective - 17 million for both combined. Those are amazing sales.
Talking strictly sales, let's throw Mario Kart Wii in the discussion, is the second selling Wii game ever and has moved 34.26 million units, which is approx. six million more than its closest Mario competitor, NSMBW. Mario Kart Wii has outsold Galaxy 1/2 combined 2 to 1, with both games generating 17 million. What's the better game? For my money, I far prefer the Galaxy titles and the side scrollers over Mario Kart,
With sales like that, of course Nintendo is going to keep Mario Kart games.
I also think that Super Mario 3D World may very well be a way to bridge the gap between the Mario Kart consumer base and the 3D fanbase. Mario Kart 8 won't be out until Spring 2014, so we won't have any crazy kart razing, but hey, there's this four player Mario game (that's not side scrolling) that we can go with in its place this Christmas.
I have to say this was the best game for me anyway to come out of this Nintendo Direct. I love how they made Peach a playable character again and on top of that they brought back her float ability. Will be getting this one for sure.
