And the 3DS is seriously very far away from being the best selling handheld ever. People are being blinded by the awful Wii U figures. 3DS is selling less than the DS, PSP and GBA did. It's quite likely to end up the lowest selling handheld for quite some time (if you don't count failures like the Virtual Boy and Vita). I can't find figures for the Gameboy and Gameboy Color, just that they did 118 million combined.

I wish people stop trying to make it seem like not outselling the flippin' DS is a bad thing.

IMO Iwata needs to go to Brisbane and become Australian Dave Grohl in a Pixies inspired grunge revival band

It is really bad since it points to obvious handheld contraction which will only get worse. The 3DS is doing well but its market will contuine to get smaller and more niche.

I never said it was doing badly. Why does everyone jump on you here, assuming that when you say it's not the best selling handheld ever, you must mean it's doing badly? It's been the top selling hardware pretty much everywhere in 2013. However, the handheld market is clearly being eaten into by mobile. Just look at the weekly Japanese chart articles on here, and all the comments laughing at the notion that mobile is eating into the market.

They sold 150 million units of the DS while 80 million PSPs were sold. Now at least 70 million of the PSP owners have not moved onto the Vita, so all those could be possible customers for Nintendo, on top of the 150 million that had their last handheld. However, we're probably over half way through the 3DS's life cycle and it's just hit 40 million, and sales were down on the year before. The DS regularly sold over 30 million a year, and Nintendo were hoping for 18 million this year. They're clearly not expecting anywhere near the DS numbers, but now that projection has been dropped further to 13 million.

It's not doing bad, but it's definitely not the best selling handheld of all time as the poster said, and as many more on here seem to think. Seriously, some guy just called it that, I correct him, and get called a troll :s

You're right. They should stop trying to fix the problems and instead just spend their time spreading the word of their failures and apologising for them. That'll get the console selling again.

Identifying what the problems are is one of, if not the the biggest, step towards actually fixing them. If you can't identify where you are failing and take accountability for those actions, how are you going to solve them?? I feel like the problem is, they truly don't see that there's a problem anywhere. To Iwata and Nintendo the problem is "We didn't sell enough". That's not a problem, that's a result.

This is how the business world does NOT work...

(At a shareholders meeting)
Investor "What did Nintendo do wrong?"
Iwata: "We did not sell enough stuff"
Investor "Well, what are you going to do then?"
Iwata "Sell more stuff"

Crowd erupts in applause, stock price soars...

@Peach64
I wouldn't say that 3DS is close to halfway through its life cycle. Considering that 3DS' library isn't even as abundant as DS' was, I'm inclined to believe that 3DS just hasn't gotten as much 3rd support. DS sold better than 3DS is currently, but there was WAAAAY more software.

DS was just a ton easier, to program for, and it was still popular hardware. The development time and prices for these games are so much higher, but everyone expects the same results. So now we have better hardware, but not as much software.

Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder is one of the best example of what 3DS can do visually, thus far, and that came out a little more than a week ago.

EDIT: The same thing could be said for Vita, which is why ports exist. It got MK9, Street Fighter X Tekken, and now it's getting Borderlands 2. It's easier to do that, than develop a new game. Companies are basically balancing a new generation of 7th gen, with handhelds, and new 8th gen games, with home consoles. Imagine making 7th gen gen games and 8th gen games, opposed to around 5/6th gen and 7th gen. They can't be exactky consistent with how much, and what software is being made, when hardware keeps on improving.

Yeah 3DS will likely last longer than DS and there's no good reason it shouldn't. I refuse to believe anyone at Nintendo wants to look forward to HD development for their handhelds too or to deal with another awkward launch, and it will likely fit with the longer life of recent consoles.

Hell, DS lasted 7 years, and that was basically a mix between the N64 and the Dreamcast. Handhelds are always a gen behind home consoles, at least. I would figure that 3DS is a GCN/Xbox 360 hybrid, while PS Vita is an Xbox 360/PS3 hybrid. This time around it seems as though Nintendo based their home console on their handhelds, instead of the other way around.

I could go on with my little comparisons, but it's not really on topic.

And thats where your wrong. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want Halo popping up on Playstation Consoles? If you play Halo.

He should not resign. That's too good for him.

He should commit seppuku and go out with honor.

Iwata is the company president, not the company dictator. That difference is vital, and arguments for Iwata resigning assume he has the role of a dictator. Do you seriously not think that important decisions are discussed internally with all executive employees? Iwata is responsible for taking final decisions, but he bases his decisions on what the rest of the board thinks. Any problems are likely to be with the entire board of directors, so replacing the president would hardly fix anything.

Making light of suicide is hella bad taste in light of a certain forum topic.

Yeah I probably did go a bit far with my last post. Sorry.

On topic, I don't think that he should resign right now.
