Topic: Do you want Nintendo to use achievements as means of substituting replay value?

We usually have stuff that are optional to get but if we do, we get more goodies like simple concept arts, music etc like in many platform games.

But Nintendo games have been having these achievements like how Sony and Microsoft have been having and I'm worried about this. Ever since I've played Mass Attack, I was never able to get all gold medals due to one stage being insanely difficult and because of that I stopped and never liked the game because it stopped me from doing a 100% completion which I love doing for games that I love and care. What I fear is that these achievements don't really do much other than showing proof that you did it and nothing else. Kid Icarus Uprising has these achievements where most of them are insane and require huge skills to do it and if you do get all the achievements, That's it. Its not like in DKCR where you get goodies like concept art but rather better weapons instead which is pointless because once you've beaten the game, the weapons will only make your journey easier and nothing else.

I'm worried that these achievements will be implemented to do a 100% completion for game that I will love and if I can't do a certain achievement like beating dark pit in crisis mode, I'd be sad and that the game would mock at me that I wasn't able to do it.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

I really dislike Achievements, they had me wrapped up for a while. I really hope Nintendo doesn't do that. We should feel free to play games as much or as little as possible, without the feeling of a game being "unfinished." It took me a long time before I realized how bad achievements got me, once I told myself that Gears of War "Seriously" achievement was do-able is when I realized I had an issue. So glad I was able to break that addiction, but I hope Nintendo doesn't do achievements. Stamps are good, I like Stamps lol

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

When they're specific to a game, aren't the main source of replayability, and serve as more than just cosmetic awards (unlocking new stuff, getting a reward, something like that), I'm all in. There are some very good examples of how to make something like that a fun thing, like Smash's accomplishments, Kid Icarus' treasure hunts, or Bayonetta's bewitchments (which actually were achievements on X360).
Just don't make a platform-wide achievement system, Nintendo. Cheap measurements don't suit you.

But if you look at it strictly, Nintendo already has something similar to an achievement system: MiiVerse stamps. They're purely cosmetical, are unlocked through various means, are nothing more than bragging rights, and getting them all is meaningless. Sure, you can decorate yoir posts with stamps, but that's more or less a substitute of an achievement showcase.
But at least your MiiVerse profile doesn't gather any information on the stamps you've collected so far, and most people actually don't care much about them to begin with.

I think achievements as is a fad that is generally dying out. The novelty is cool, but I think most people have caught on that it's an artificial and cheap way to pad out a game's play time. It's not extra content.

But there are people who still care about achievements, so Nintendo has nothing to lose, really. It's not like achievements take a lot of time, effort, or thought on the developer's part.

@DefHalan Your example provides yet another problem with achievements, namely that some are glitched. Even if you got 10,000 kills in versus ranked matches, it's not certain that you would have got the achievement. These glitches are what broke my achievement addiction.

i dont really care for achievements, but if they ever do it then please like this:

with each achievement you get a "stamp" you can use in miiverse's drawings. that could motivate me

I have to agree with @Kaze_Memaryu. Achievements shouldn't be used as a substitution for replay value.

The game isn't mocking you, it's withholding the reward until you've accomplished the requirement. If you feel like you're being mocked I'm sorry, but no offense is intended in achievement panels.

@SkywardLink98 I feel incomplete when I'm not able to 100% games because of them requiring me to do a certain achievement that's insane inorder for me to 100%

I'm worried if I get Wario Land Shake it, I won't be able to complete the achievements it asks me to do and that I can't complete 100% because of them. If 100% is there along with achievements, I'm fine by that and that actually expands the replay value.

If video games make you feel inadequate as a person, you're doing it wrong.

The thing is that achievements aren't necessarily 100%. They don't have much meaning in completing the game. I see it more as that extra 10%. The 110% you give to be the best. I was really hoping the Wii U was going to have achievements. Disappointed, but I would still love certain achievement-like things in future games, since they're a lot of fun and something to strive for after you've beaten the game.

Suppliment! They're there to suppliment to replay value! Not replace it...granted, even big-time publishers get this wrong, but still...

I don't mind if they are there, but I won't pull my hair out if I cannot complete some of them.

I loved W101's approach where a certain group of achievements unlocked each secret character. I also like the Stamp alternative or any other achievement that gives you something in game.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Don't get upset over hitting an arbitrary number.

Why wouldn't the completion tracker count achievements towards 100%? To "100%" something you have to accomplish, acquire, beat, etc. everything and so it should include achievements. That would be like a class not counting extra credit assignments toward your final grade in the class. (Not to compare completing everything in a video game to getting a good grade in a class. The priority of a game is to have fun, and the priority of a class is to get a high grade so you look smart.)
EDIT: Typos.

@SpookyMeths What do you mean by that?

@SkywardLink98 but if doing the achievement requires an insane amount of skill to get something so simple like say a music track, It really won't be worth doing it.

if there's an achievement like beat a Zelda game without dying inorder to get a simple stamp like a gold 100% file, its really not worth it.

Then again, knowing Nintendo, they won't do something that everyone else does all the time so I hope Nintendo doesn't use achievements that make gamers frustrated and all.

Hell no to be blunt. Achievements(trophies) have no true value other than to allow for easy to do online bragging. The real achievement should be playing the game and achieving a victory over a stage, a world, or the whole game itself. They serve no real purpose other than to pop up in the middle of the game breaking the mood to show you cleared something, killed something, hit a waypoint, or did some really screwy maneuver that resulted in something cool that takes effort. I wish more than anything I could turn trophies off on my PS4 as they bug the crap out of me. I don't need a console telling me I earned a little gold star for whatever. I'm happy knowing I'm not dead in the game and got further as it has always been and should be. Ultimately the things are greatly just lame pad to stretch out in the worst way possible the play time into a game.

@Artwark The goal of an achievement isn't the reward, it's accomplishing the challenge. You don't earn "Clusterstruck" on Counter-Strike:GO (kill 5 enemy players with a planted bomb, according to steam less than 3% of players have done this) to have a cool badge on your profile, you do it because it's fun.

Artwark wrote:

So don't do it. Someone (possibly me) else will find it worth it for the challenge alone.
