It was okay that he didn't talk in the early days but with games being more like movies, having the main character be a mute is disconcerting.
Its getting to be like the latest and flashiest blockbuster movie that still relies on the same concept of communication that the old silent movies used. Except that Link has zero social skills. He has less of a personality than a Mii creation. Sure he's active and gets things done but you never hear his thoughts about doing these things.
Sure, its supposed you being Link and his thoughts are actually your own thoughts. If thats the case then just make him a Mii going on an adventure instead. You don't see any other media doing the same with their own mute characters so that the audience can project their own thoughts into the character so why does videogames get a free pass on this?
Oh, and Link talking in the Zelda cartoon and CD-I games is no indication of what him talking in a game would be like. Yes, the writing and voice acting for Link in the old cartoon and CD-I games sucked hard. But thats all the problem was; writing and voice acting. Not the fact that Link actually talks. A Nintendo game created in the present would take more care with the writing and how he sounds.
Link doesn't necessarily need to talk, but in 2011 every one else in the game should. Unfortunatley they don't. [youtube:aLUSwBS9ZgI] I was fine with no voices on the GameCube but only because I understood it was a hardware limitation. That's not the case with the Wii.

I'm fine without Link talking. Every other Zelda game is great without him talking and that's not going to change just because the hardware is decent enough for Nintendo to grant him a voice. I'm sure there's a lot of people out there that would love Link to start talking, but there's probably also just as many people who would rage if he did so. So in the end, it's probably impossible for Nintendo to make everybody happy. As long as the games remain great, that's all that matters!
They missed a huge opportunity to have everyone else talking with skyward sword, especially since they would have been able to skip one of the biggest hurdles; they wouldn't have to give Ganondorf a voice. However it is my opinion that Link should never talk.
You don't see any other media doing the same with their own mute characters so that the audience can project their own thoughts into the character so why does videogames get a free pass on this?
They're not getting a free pass on mute characters, they're making up for the lack of mute characters in other media.
The reason Link is mute is not only because you're supposed to feel like you're Link, but so that you can insert your thoughts and ideas for him, instead of having a set character. Link is fine just the way he is.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
Never. I honestly would prefer Zelda and Ganon never talking either to be quite honest but I could live with that. Link talking is unnecessary and stupid.
And no one should trust Nintendo to do stuff like this after super controversial game.
Never. Link talking would really ruin the series for me. There's a saying, something like 'it's better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it'... i'd rather people laugh at the Zelda series for being backwards and not modern by still featuring a silent protagonist than them try to cement a voice and (major) personality to Link and fail miserably.

Plus, if Link was voiced, it would detach the player from the game. Link has always been the silent protag that you control. You save Hyrule. Adding voices to that would detach me.
id still do it though

Edit: Though I wonder, the games are really linear. Compared to something like some WRPGs where you completely choose everything the character does, would it really be that bad to give Link some personality, since the story is scripted anyway. Besides, the series has just gone downhill the past years, how bad would it be to try something new?
I agree that the legend of Zelda is fine without Link talking. Spoken Dialogue isn't the natural progression, I feel that Link's silence makes sense in the world of Zelda I also like that it places more emphasis on the body language of characters. Because they can't rely on how dialogue is spoken they "act" more.
