I'm curious, for those that can get the free update to Windows 10, have you decided to try the new OS? What has been your experience with it? For me, it didn't work out, so I decided to go back to Windows 8.1
so far i have not even tried it. mainly because i am not sure if i could even update. i always get errors when trying to install the latest windows 7 update (service pack 2). not sure why. it suddenly stops installing the update and goes back to windows 7 service pack 1.
Yes, I have been running it since 29th July. Pretty good, a few minor issues with some apps that got fixed with recent updates. Overall better performance than 8, and the return of a desktop centred interface. Modern apps are updated, improved and run in windowed mode. The Start menu returns, although it's not as good as in previous iterations like Windows 7, yet. But a definite improvement from Windows 8.
It has also some neat new features for window management, like Exposé view of all open windows and multiple virtual desktops. The kind of stuff that Mac and Linux (I dabble in Linux from time to time) users had for years, but better late than never.
However, there's always some..
CONS:
Very spooky privacy settings by default, and I'm not usually wearing tin foils hats. Imagine if Facebook was your entire OS. Everything you type goes to Microsoft, which also has access to your camera, microphone and smartphone messages to do whatever they like, apparently. Luckily, it can be disabled. And local accounts can also be used.
With the Home edition of Windows 10, you can no longer skip specific system updates.
Windows 7 users will lose Windows Media Centre and built-in DVD playback is gone too.
Cortana is not available in many locales and languages, including my own (Although I view it as a pro rather than a con).
I won't be upgrading until I absolutely have to. It's not a terrible OS, and is definitely a huge step up from 8 and 8.1, but Cortana is buggy as heck and it's a bit of a privacy nightmare. Honestly, Microsoft is going to need to develop some killer feature if it ever wants me to upgrade from 7 before it shuts off support completely.
Oh by the way, anyone know if there's any software incompatibility going on?
That's one the major reasons I don't feel like upgrading.
Also, anyone know if my tablet drivers would still work as well?
As a rule of thumb, I would say pretty much everything that already worked on Windows 8, works on Windows 10. That's my personal experience so far.
I have an old statistical analysis software I happen to rely much on, from the Windows Vista era (mid 2000's), which gave me some headaches running under 8.1. It actually is working properly now on Windows 10. I cannot complain.
Yeah, I've upgraded. I think Windows 10 is an excellent step go from Windows 7; I mean, W10 is basically W7 with a new look inspired by Windows 8, thanks to W10's Start Menu. Cortana is much more helpful and understanding than I initially thought she would be. Microsoft Edge is without a doubt one of the best desktop browsers I've ever used. The only thing stopping me from dumping Google Chrome for the new browser (which might never happen, lol) is the fact that Google Chrome connects with your Gmail account, and the fact that, for some reason, Microsoft Edge does not support video calls. However, I think it's worth noting that Edge supports 60FPS video playback!
But it's not like W10 is perfect. For starters, it has already been mentioned that Windows 10 has scary privacy issues. I mean, WiFi Sense just doesn't add up; for no reason should you to be allowed to connect to your friend's internet without permission. Luckily, it can be turned off (I think...) albeit confusing wording.
Aside from a few niggles which I suspect is only exclusive to my laptop, I honestly think Windows 10 is worth every free penny. Of course, I understand that some users are waiting for feedback before making the move, but if you loved W7 and sorta liked W8, W10 is definitely for you.
Nope I haven't. My laptop has Windows Vista, so I can't get the free update anyway. Also, the laptop died recently so I'll probably build a PC eventually and put Windows 10 on it. Windows 7 support will end eventually, so I may as well go straight to Windows 10.
I didn't know about the privacy issues before, and I'll be sure to change the default settings on Windows 10.
Running it on my Surface Pro 3, so far it runs like a champ. No issues with any of my software and some of my programs are old (such as office 2010). Getting used to the interface since 8.1 worked well on the surface but it seems to be a happy medium. Also if you don't like it you have 30 days to downgrade. You can turn off the data mining.

I downloaded it cause I didn't really like the layout for Windows 8. I like 10. I don't like Microsoft Edge much, though. It's not a bad browser, but I like Chrome better. Chrome has plugins and can play webm files.
Cortana is pretty neat. She's just like Siri and she's in your computer.

Not yet, though I probably will soon. I've been waiting to see if there was anything terrible about it, or to see if there were any huge bugs that needed fixed, but it seems like there was none of that so, sounds good!
Everyone is "sharing" data about you. You think Microsoft is collecting even a fraction of the amount of information about you as Google does? Or Facebook? Or Apple? Your ISP? The government? Even Nintendo collects your data. Everytime you use the internet unless you're being incredibly careful about it you're being tracked. Pretty much all of it is just to find better ads, news and products for you to consume. So the panic about Windows 10 I think is a bit overblown. Where's the panic about all of the other companies doing precisely the same thing?
Anyways, unlike some other services you can turn it off. Plus if you're not getting Windows 10 for that reason alone? I mean, wow. I don't know why. Windows 10 is far better than 8 and 8, despite it's UI flaws, was a better OS underneath than Windows 7. There's a whole collection of stuff that has been improved. From performance improvements, including Direct X 12, right down to little things like the better file transfer info-box. I have been using it for a good week and haven't had a single issue.
