It is a very good question, but I think no one saw the 3DS coming, and nobody will know what Nintendo will come up with next. It will be something new - either attachments to smartphones, or some virtual reality ala Star Wars who knows.
A Wii U Gamepad-like device that can play any game on the go or on the TV creating only 1 single Nintendo console that serves as both the Home Console and the Handheld Console.
Seems reasonable to me with the hardware divisions combining, this is what I thought was gonna happen when I first saw the gamepad at e3. Would be pretty awesome tbh.
I hope the 3DS has another year or two at least in it's life span honestly, I didn't get my XL until this March so i haven't had it that long. And I'm fine with how the games look right now, I mean they don't have to look good for me too still love them, but good graphics is a definite plus in my book. But as far as the next handheld I would love to see higher screen resolution, stick to the duel screens, and definitely hope they keep the 3D because I love it, it really helps me get immersed in the games and no matter how many times I see it I'm still impressed with how awesome games look in 3D (OoT absolutely blew my mind with the 3D effect the first time I played it). I think it would also be awesome if they incorporated a second circle pad on the left side of the system, that IMO is a must at this point simply because the controls for MH3U are really tricky especially the underwater battles. 4DS
GameBoy Advance had one screen, the DS had two....and the 3DS, when you think about it, has three screens. x3 (you know, from the whole separate images to both eyes thing, lol)

Keep it PG-13-ish.
Where do you go from 3D? I don't see myself buying another 2D handheld again, it would feel like a massive step backwards, even if it is in HD. Either way it'll be pretty amazing to see what Nintendo do.
A second stereoscopic screen for the lower touch screen would be a first.
And some increase in resolution for the 2 3D screens with inevitable second (improved) analog sticks.
A final remark: all their handhelds have been backward compatible, they'll be forced to at least let the stereoscopic upper screen for compatibility purposes.
maybe the option to stream console games on to the handheld via internet.
Unless they include 3G(which I don't see happening, somehow), I don't see the point to this. Unless you're at a local hotspot, you're probably in a home anyway, so unless your friends don't have Ninty's home console it'd be sort of useless. It'd be a handheld console, that let you use console games on it when you're at home or near a hotspot... So... Basically a slightly improved GamePad. Something that HAS its uses, but I imagine that it would be a bit of a hassle to get up, and for what's more a "cool" feature wouldn't be worth it. Now, if they let you keep several console game on it at a time or rid of it and made it a wonderfully powerful handheld that can send gameplay to your TV, on the other hand... That... Would be the greatest console of all thyme.
The next handheld will probably have a bit more power than the Vita as lately it feels like Nintendo consoles seem to be a slightly powered up version of other current gen consoles that are out (and have more power).
The cat's the only cat who knows where it's at.
