Best Mario Kart - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Fun fact: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best-selling game on this list. It's also the second best-selling single-platform game that Nintendo's ever released, after Wii Sports (which doesn't really count, since it was boxed with the Wii). The Switch version alone has sold 43.35 copies, putting it ahead of games like Tetris, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and every single Pokémon game. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is more popular than every other Mario game, even. That's madness!

Worst Mario Kart - Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

Unfortunately, no one really bought or played the real-life Mario Kart, Home Circuit. The toys-to-life genre of games fizzled out years before Home Circuit's 2020 release, and although the idea of an augmented reality Mario Kart game is very cool, it isn't the multiplayer party game that the masses wanted — culminating in Home Circuit selling a paltry 1.27 million, far less than every other Mario Kart game.

Best Metroid - Metroid Prime

"Prime" means "first", and that's apt for the Metroid series, as Metroid Prime on the GameCube is the best-seller (although Metroid Dread is very, very close behind). However, with only 2.84m copies sold, it's a testament to how niche Metroid games actually are — the best-selling Metroid game is only twice as popular as the worst-selling Mario Kart game. Madness!

Worst Metroid - Metroid Prime: Federation Force

"Prime" means "first", but Metroid Prime: Federation Force is far from first with its trifling 0.15m copies sold on the 3DS. Fans hated it, largely because it had almost nothing to do with previous Metroid games, and because people wanted a mainline Metroid game instead of a spin-off, but also because of its chibi art-style, its lack of Samus, and its use of random, nameless marines.

Best Pokémon - Pokémon Red/Green/Blue

The best selling Pokémon game, surprisingly (or... not surprisingly) is the first one. Although Sword & Shield, the Switch offering, sold a substantial 23.9m copies, that doesn't come close to the 31.05m copies that Red, Green, and Blue sold — and Yellow sold a further 14.64m in 1998, so that brings the total up to 45.69 (nice) and that's not even counting FireRed, LeafGreen, and the Let's Go games. Those are some big numbers!

Worst Pokémon - Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Pokémon games sell big, no matter what they are, so the worst-selling game in the Pokémon series would be most people's idea of a smashing success. Pokémon Scarlet & Violet is the newest installment at the time of writing, so its 23m copies sold is by no means unimpressive, but that still puts it at the bottom of the list of Pokémon games — not counting one-off additional games like Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum, that is.

Best Star Fox - Star Fox 64

Whether you call it Star Fox 64 or Lylat Wars, you have to agree: This is the best Star Fox game. Packed full of memorable quotes, like "Do a barrel roll!" and literally anything Slippy says, plus the iconic sound design, Star Fox 64 sticks in your brain like a catchy song. If only we could get one on Switch... But if the best one only sold 4 million copies, and none of the other games since have come close to that, it's not likely.

Worst Star Fox - Star Fox Zero

Perhaps only the worst-selling because it was A) on the Wii U, and B) had largely been forgotten about as a series when it came out in 2016, Star Fox Zero managed only 0.44m copies sold. Oh, and the fact that it used motion controls on the Wii U GamePad, a choice that basically no one enjoyed.
