I would love Secret of Mana to show up on the VC. Makes sense since Square Enix hasn't done anything to that particular chapter in the Mana series. I would definitely buy if released.
Also I would probably DL Mario Golf for the N64 if released outside of Japan. I had a lot of fun with it back then, especially the mini-golf mode.
I wish good luck to you Ed and Ghostfire Games. From the look of it, I rather games like Helix be successful than games like SPOGs or Pong Toss because it looks like you and your group has put a lot of thought and work into Helix.
As for whether I'm getting it, lets just say I'm in the group with the rest of the gamers waiting for a review on Helix. I hope it is as good as you say. =)
An excellent week for the VC indeed. Two five-star games that were previously announced to the shop is now here. I'll be downloading Ys when I get home ASAP. Looks like a lot of fun plus I do love me some retro RPG goodness.
It's not SMRPG but Ys is a RPG nonetheless. A good one too. DL now! =)
DoReMi Fantasy is such a great platformer game. Definitely download this game. Granted it's not translated so you won't understand the storyline but it doesn't detract from the gameplay. The VC needs more quality import titles like DoReMi.
Who knows when this game will make it to NA but I hope Europe enjoys Super Mario RPG since it'll be the first time the game's been released over there. It's a good-un that's definitely worth your Wii Points if you like RPGs and Mario.
I was hoping My Aquarium to come out today too. One redeeming quality about Midnight Pool is that it doesn't have competition (aside from Billiards in WiiPlay and a couple of VC titles). Look at Block Breaker Deluxe, a mobile game ported to WiiWare that was actually kind of fun.
Looks like it is a great week for the VC with MM and NTM. I don't know anything about Neo Turf but judging from the review and some of the people here, it looks like it is worth a download.
Now Mega Man is where the sweet action is. If you haven't played Mega Man, then you're in for a treat...a difficult treat. It's not the hardest game in the world but if you're not familiar with it, you will die. And die and die. This games takes a lot of patience, for example learning Yellow Devil's pattern. Still you have some sweet action, great music, memorable bosses, and nifty power-ups. The controls aren't as functional here compared to it's sequel (I hate when you drop down quickly like if you played Tetris and pressed down for the block to fall). Still one redeeming qualityis the VC suspension save point. Back then, there was no password for this game so it was a very long hard fight to get to Dr. Wily. At least now, if you get frusterated, just take a break and come back to it later.
Download this game if you want some sweet action platforming. Or you can wait for MM2 but I'll be willing to bet after you play MM2, you'll be willing to try out MM. =)
I think there's a good chance we'll see a good VC game come out this Monday in NA region. Most of the games in the "Coming Soon" list that have been by the ESRB are games that most people can enjoy. Plus don't forget there's a chance either Mega Man, Samurai Shodown II and Ys Book I & II could show up as well. Here's to hoping...
It looks very promising. One of the best news I heard not only from WiiWare but Nintendo in general this week.
It'll probably be big but can you imagine if there was a storage solution announced in the future and the WiiWare size limite increased a bit? We could end up getting great games like this. =)
If My Aquarium comes out this Monday, I'll probably be tempted to buy it after this review. It looks like Hudson did a great job making this just like owning your own fish tank. Plus its nice to hear the visuals are great.
For 500 points, this game is hardly worth complaining about. Not only is it a cheap WiiWare "game", it's even cheaper than owning your own fishies. I hope this game gets better recognition than Star Soldier R. I want more Hudson WiiWare games. =)
Great to see Strong Bad up there at the number 1 spot after two days from it's debut. Quality still is an important factor in a video game and not "shovelware" of a popular sport or brand.
Good to see Wild West Guns on the Top 5. It's an original (not ported from a mobile phone) game from Gameloft and it's good.
And while I played it, I haven't bought Toki Tori yet. A problem I hope I will remedy this week. It'll be sad to see it go from the lists. =(
Just a heads up for those that can't wait until tomorrow, Strong Bad is No. 1 in the WiiWare Popular Lists in NA. It gives us gamers and WiiWare developers hope that if you put out a great game, people will buy unlike Pong Toss' philosophy.
As soon as I get better acquainted with Homestar Runner, I'll be downloading this for sure. =)
We've been hearing numerous times from Capcom why Bionic Commando won't appear on the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console. I think Nintendo should give the gamers a response on why it won't release BC if Capcom is all for it.
The reviews have been pouring in and been nothing but positive for Strong Bad.
My only concern is that I'm not a Homestar Runner fan since I never viewed their website at all. While I'm tempted to give this a download I might wait to get better acquainted with HR and Strong Bad, even though I know where the inspiration came from. It's not like it's going away soon and raising in price. =P
Miscommunication. That's all I have to say about last week.
As for the rest of you still whining, there's eBay. Check it out if you can't wait.
Now onto today where we see a much better Wii-kly update with Star Parodier and Strong Bad. I'll wait for the reviews on Strong Bad but I'm downloading Star Parodier as soon as I get the chance. Gley Lancer and Super Fantasy Zone were ok and all but I was really waiting for Star Parodier to be released. Now the only TG-16 I'm looking forward to is Parasol Stars. Here's for hoping.
WiiWare Popular Titles Listing in NA as of 08/10/2008:
1 (2) - Pong Toss - Frat Party Games 2 (1) - My Pokemon Ranch 3 (3) - Dr. Mario Online Rx 4 (4) - Defend Your Castle 5 (12) - Wild West Guns 6 (5) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King 7 (6) - TV Show King 8 (8) - LostWinds 9 (7) - Pirates: The Key of Dreams 10 (9) - Family Table Tennis 11 (10) - Cocoto Fishing Master 12 (11) - Gyrostarr 13 (13) - SPOGS Racing 14 (15) - Block Breaker Deluxe 15 (16) - V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack 16 (14) - Major League Eating: The Game 17 (17) - Magnetica Twist 18 (18) - Pop 19 (19) - Toki Tori 20 (20) - Protöthea
It's official. Pong Toss is the number one WiiWare game in NA. And as much as I (and probably the rest of you) find that very revolting, I can see why it's number one. Even some of my bar friends were anxious to download the game and they hardly play the Wii at all. Of course I step in and said might as well buy a six-pack of beer and some DART cups. Still they said they were going to download it anyway. Face it, Pong Toss is going to be a popular game for the time being.
Nice to see Wild West Guns take the five spot. I haven't download the game so hopefully I'll get a chance soon when I make some space in the Wii-frigerator.
But alas, another week passes by and at least Europe gets Samurai Shodown II this week. Maybe we'll get it this Monday, maybe not. I'm hoping I can look forward to Star Parodier this Monday. I've been wanting to play that game for a while now. =)
I'm a little more concerned about how third party publishers are told that their games were to be released on a set date and then completely been voided the following Monday. First it started off with Star Parodier and Break In a few weeks back. Normally, Hudson is spot-on with their VC calendar. On that day we received two import shooters. As much as I wanted to be sad, I saw it as no biggie and figured it'll come in August.
Fast foward to last week where not only Hudson announced a game but also SNK and Capcom. Now I really don't think 3 third-party publishers have decided "Ok let's write a press release or a blog that so and so game is coming out the following Monday. Nintendo will have to release because it was already announced". So here we are thinking those 3 games will be announced and bam, nothing. It could've been Mega Man 5 or some other game that stank on the Neo Geo or TG-16. The point is there has been miscommunication in the past few weeks here and it's starting to have an ominous effect. Now we can't really trust press releases and announcements because according to Nintendo "the Wii-kly is the only authority for confirmed dates". Same would apply to WiiWare.
I just wish someone would speak up on either side about what transpired. Better to nip this in the bud now than be silent and wait for it to happen again.
Pong Toss is #2 and Disaster Movie (from the creators of Epic Movie, Date Movie) is releasing this month; it'll probably number one too. Meanwhile Toki Tori is almost about to get the boot.
Before beating this already dead horse, I just find it very strange that these third-party publishers would be promoting a release date without having some kind of confirmation from somebody at Nintendo. They could've been promoting crap games for release and I still would've had cause for concern.
And that statement is not even an apology. It's more like they are cleaning up their own mess. I just hope this is the last time something like this happens because this is a terrible way to establish relationships with third-party publishers.
I think Nintendo ought to give some kind of response to this very soon. Not only is this disappointing to their consumers but also the publishers that put their hard work on promoting these games so they can be as successful as Nintendo first-party games. I sincerely doubt these publishers are saying any old willy nilly date without Nintendo having a word with them.
Either don't tell these publishers a date or go by your word and release them.
So now we got three great games coming out this Monday, August 4th. Will one of these games be rescheduled? Will August be the month that the Virtual Console has a heartbeat in 2008? Who knows....but I can't wait.
I don't want to be the one to sound like an overdramatic person but I think this coming Monday is an important day. People have been yammering on and on about the Virtual Console is getting no love especially in the North American region. To make it short, if you are at least the slightest fan of the fighting or RPG genres or both and have Wii Points available, you really should give SSII and Ys a download. If you aren't a fan yet you know someone that is, spread the word. It'll send a message to NoA and NoJ that if critically acclaimed and fan favorite third-party games are put up in the VC, people will indeed buy. The VC haven't had those type of games since River City Ransom and Double Dragon was released earlier this year (in NA).
While this may not be 100% confirmation (look what happened to Star Parodier and Break In), it's indeed starting to look like one of the best VC Mondays North America will be receiving this year with hopefully many more to come.
Wow. Samurai Shodown II along with the rumored Wild West Guns WiiWare game will make this Monday one of the better Wii Mondays in a while, in my opinion.
I think that's a great price for the game for a simple reason. It helps reach a more broader audience. Not only will more people be intrigued on purchasing it but to be realistic, most people thought this was going to be set in the 1,000 point ($10) range. This way gamers won't be desuaded by the price and anyone wanting more will purchase the DLC. It's win-win.
Critter Round-Up looks like it's going to be the next casualty in the coming week.
I'm surprised to see TV Show King still holding on. Guess you don't need fancy buzzers (Buzz! and Scene It) to enjoy gaming trivia. Such a shame to see Gyrostarr falling down. Pretty soon it'll be in the 11-20 rankings.
Finally I'm guessing the next campaign is to save Toki Tori. Buy the game now folks!
While the mini-games don’t really attract me too much (mimicking Duck Hunt and Wii Play), it's nice to see a wide selection of environments and targets to shoot at.
Overall though, it’s looking exactly how I described earlier on (mix of Sunset Riders and Lethal Enforcers). Looking forward to it when it hits NA.
It's unfortunate to hear Chase H.Q. hasn't aged as well from the last time I played in the arcade. I was ready to purchase the game and all too.
Oh well it may seem like a crap week but at least NA can look onward for future releases like Strong Bad, Star Parodier, Ys Book I and II. Maybe even Shining Force II. It's been a year, dang it. =P
I had a strong feeling this game wasn't going to be released today knowing it was recently been submitted to Nintendo. Still it won't be long until Strong Bad shows up. I give it 2 weeks.
I'm hoping for Parasol Stars to be released outside of Japan. I loved Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands so playing this will feel like I completed the Bub and Bob saga. Crossing my fingers for this one!
Would it really hurt that much if the updates had the classic versions left intact?
Actually yeah it can. If you've noticed, Excitebike for the NES has climbed back up the "Popular Titles" listing (in NA, at least). So it's selling and it's probably one reason why Excitebike 64 won't be released any time soon. I could be wrong about this but I wouldn't leave the original game intact if the standalone original game still is selling. Like I said, I could be wrong.
Shin’en is a good developer (definitely digging Nanostray 2). If they can make this game as much fun as the mini-golf game in Mario Golf for the N64, then I’m in.
Beetle Adventure Racing (N64): One of the most enjoyable racers not only for the Nintendo 64 but during that time period. Still is enjoyable to this day. I hope this makes it to the VC.
Road Rash 1, 2, or 3 (Mega Drive/Genesis): One of my favorite games on the Sega Genesis. I never played Road Rash 1 but part 2 really hooked me into the game. And I remember when part 3 came out, I saved my allowance just to get that and I was loving every minute of playing it.
Skitchin' (Mega Drive/Genesis): Sure it may not be the perfect game but, to me, it was very enjoyable and definitely was considered an "extreme" game. Two-player mode was ass but it's one of those games where you can watch as your buddy gets wiped out by the car he was holding onto. My favorite weapon was of course the cattle prod. Fans of Road Rash would dig this game. I would love this to come to the VC since there hasn't been another sequel since.
Well those are what I can think of for the moment.
I can see what the game is trying to do. It looks like a fun little workout that people can enjoy and I did like the techno music in the trailer. However, all I've seen is people flail their arms or do an uppercut motion. Is that all the moves you can do in the game? Plus do you really need two Wii Remotes in order to play the game?
I'll agree with other people and say this is one of the better VC Mondays NA has received in quite a while. Sure they may be shmups but both are pretty good. I might get Super Fantasy Zone to try it out.
Unfortunately the only disppointment is still having to wait until Star Parodier to be released. I was really pysch on playing that game today.
The only thing that sucks about this is how Capcom was being a little bit misleading with the exclusivity of Mega Man 9. Probably a little miscommunication there.
But I'm glad Mega Man 9 is being released multi-platform and I hope it does well. Maybe more developers can create their dream sequels of yesteryear knowing us fans would love the same thing.
I'll probably buy the WiiWare version to get that classic NES feel.
I've been looking at the gameplay footage for SPOGS and I got to say that this game is the most plain, dullest looking game I have seen in a while. I think it'll be outright torture for anyone having to subject to this for more than 5 minutes. Of course I haven't played it, but in this case it's one of those games you just look at for a minute and say "pass".
Seriously I'm getting a little p'd off with Nintendo of Japan or whoever it is releasing VC games to NA. Fine, we may not get titles like Japan or a nice chunk of games like Europe (5 VC games one week, 2 WiiWare games the next) but at least give us NAs some kind of consistency. Not to knock Neo Geo but SNK Arcade classics is coming out this week. It's like WiiWare is the main focus here and VC is being pushed to the brink of extinction.
Earthbound and Super Mario RPG are my more obvious choices. As for the obscure ones, can't wait for Chase H.Q., Ninja Commando, and Star Parodier. Also Shining Force II...man that game needs to come out and soon.
If the version of Chase H.Q. for the TG-16 is the same as the arcade version, then I'll be definitely getting this the day it is release. Had a lot of fun playing the arcade version back in the days.
With WiiWare arriving in NA and Europe in about a month, it looks like the Virtual Console will take a seat in the end of the school bus. It really doesn't help any matters if Nintendo's blocking off Bionic Commando due to the remakes being on the PSN and Xbox Live.
I would understand from a game like Goldeneye, one of the N64 most prized games. But from Bionic Commando? Man, Nintendo is simply shattering my expectations for the VC.

Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - September 2008
I would love Secret of Mana to show up on the VC. Makes sense since Square Enix hasn't done anything to that particular chapter in the Mana series. I would definitely buy if released.

Re: Alien Crush Returns & Space Invaders Get Even In Japan
It all depends on how long the length is for each level in SIGE. If it take 30 mins - 1 hour to complete, that sounds good for 500 Wii Points.
Re: Helix Coming To US WiiWare This Coming Monday!
For some funny reason, I had a feeling Helix would show up this coming Monday to the NA WiiWare service.
I won't be buying it on the first day but I'll be interested to see if Ed really speaks the truth. Let's hope so. =)
Re: Hanabi Festival 3 Kicks Off
DoReMi Fantasy is such a great platformer game. Definitely download this game. Granted it's not translated so you won't understand the storyline but it doesn't detract from the gameplay. The VC needs more quality import titles like DoReMi.
Re: EU VC Releases: Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
I doubt NA will get SMRPG on Monday so here's to hoping Ys Book I & II will finally be released this Monday. Come on Nintendo, don't mess this up now.
Re: EU VC Releases: Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Who knows when this game will make it to NA but I hope Europe enjoys Super Mario RPG since it'll be the first time the game's been released over there. It's a good-un that's definitely worth your Wii Points if you like RPGs and Mario.

You're right. It looks like it is coming out this Monday:

While this may not be 100% confirmation (look what happened to Star Parodier and Break In), it's indeed starting to look like one of the best VC Mondays North America will be receiving this year with hopefully many more to come.
Re: Samurai Shodown II Coming To North American VC In August
Wow. Samurai Shodown II along with the rumored Wild West Guns WiiWare game will make this Monday one of the better Wii Mondays in a while, in my opinion.
Re: Space Invaders Get Even To Come With Bargain Price Tag
I think that's a great price for the game for a simple reason. It helps reach a more broader audience. Not only will more people be intrigued on purchasing it but to be realistic, most people thought this was going to be set in the 1,000 point ($10) range. This way gamers won't be desuaded by the price and anyone wanting more will purchase the DLC. It's win-win.
Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in America (30th July)
Critter Round-Up looks like it's going to be the next casualty in the coming week.
I'm surprised to see TV Show King still holding on. Guess you don't need fancy buzzers (Buzz! and Scene It) to enjoy gaming trivia. Such a shame to see Gyrostarr falling down. Pretty soon it'll be in the 11-20 rankings.
Finally I'm guessing the next campaign is to save Toki Tori. Buy the game now folks!
Re: Wild West Guns - Fact Sheet, New Images And Video!
Re: USA VC Update: Chase HQ and Art of Fighting 2
It's unfortunate to hear Chase H.Q. hasn't aged as well from the last time I played in the arcade. I was ready to purchase the game and all too.
Oh well it may seem like a crap week but at least NA can look onward for future releases like Strong Bad, Star Parodier, Ys Book I and II. Maybe even Shining Force II. It's been a year, dang it. =P
Re: Where In The World Is Strong Bad?
I had a strong feeling this game wasn't going to be released today knowing it was recently been submitted to Nintendo. Still it won't be long until Strong Bad shows up. I give it 2 weeks.
Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - August 2008
Those Japanese are so lucky. Heh
I'm hoping for Parasol Stars to be released outside of Japan. I loved Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands so playing this will feel like I completed the Bub and Bob saga. Crossing my fingers for this one!
Re: Top 10 Racing Games We Want To Come To The Virtual Console
Would it really hurt that much if the updates had the classic versions left intact?
Actually yeah it can. If you've noticed, Excitebike for the NES has climbed back up the "Popular Titles" listing (in NA, at least). So it's selling and it's probably one reason why Excitebike 64 won't be released any time soon. I could be wrong about this but I wouldn't leave the original game intact if the standalone original game still is selling. Like I said, I could be wrong.
Re: Fun! Fun! Minigolf
Shin’en is a good developer (definitely digging Nanostray 2). If they can make this game as much fun as the mini-golf game in Mario Golf for the N64, then I’m in.
Re: Top 10 Racing Games We Want To Come To The Virtual Console
Here are some honorable mentions:
Re: Official Helix WiiWare Trailer - Shake Your Booty!
Re: USA VC Update: Super Fantasy Zone and Gley Lancer
I'll agree with other people and say this is one of the better VC Mondays NA has received in quite a while. Sure they may be shmups but both are pretty good. I might get Super Fantasy Zone to try it out.
Unfortunately the only disppointment is still having to wait until Star Parodier to be released. I was really pysch on playing that game today.
Re: Mega Man 9 - New Video, Online Leaderboards, NOT Exclusive!
Re: Most Popular WiiWare Games in America (9th July)
Nice to see Gyrostarr still at number 4 and LostWinds up 2 spots from the previous week.
Sad to see Toki Tori slipping one position down and also sad for the people actually buying SPOGS.
Re: USA WiiWare Update: SPOGS Racing
I've been looking at the gameplay footage for SPOGS and I got to say that this game is the most plain, dullest looking game I have seen in a while. I think it'll be outright torture for anyone having to subject to this for more than 5 minutes. Of course I haven't played it, but in this case it's one of those games you just look at for a minute and say "pass".
Re: US VC Release - 7th July - King of the Monsters
Seriously I'm getting a little p'd off with Nintendo of Japan or whoever it is releasing VC games to NA. Fine, we may not get titles like Japan or a nice chunk of games like Europe (5 VC games one week, 2 WiiWare games the next) but at least give us NAs some kind of consistency. Not to knock Neo Geo but SNK Arcade classics is coming out this week. It's like WiiWare is the main focus here and VC is being pushed to the brink of extinction.
Re: Drake's Ratings Roundup - June 2008
Earthbound and Super Mario RPG are my more obvious choices. As for the obscure ones, can't wait for Chase H.Q., Ninja Commando, and Star Parodier. Also Shining Force II...man that game needs to come out and soon.
Re: Chase H.Q.
If the version of Chase H.Q. for the TG-16 is the same as the arcade version, then I'll be definitely getting this the day it is release. Had a lot of fun playing the arcade version back in the days.
Re: Bionic Commando NOT coming to the Virtual Console!
