Re: Talking Point: Is There A Future For The Wii U Without The GamePad?

larry_koopa

I hate the GamePad. Wind Waker HD is an amazing title that I played completely with the Pro Controller. Besides about 3 levels the GamePad did nothing for Super Mario 3D World, the best title on the system. Developers don't care about the GamePad and apparently neither do consumers; hardly anybody is buying the system despite the fact that Mario 3D World was one of the best games released in 2013.

The GamePad is simply not necessary. All the games can just as easily be played without it. Sell a Wii U bundle that is $50 cheaper and that comes with a Pro Controller instead of the GamePad.

And honestly, who is actually going to play Smash Bros with that thing? It's too clunky and awkward for such a fast-paced game.

Re: Preview: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

larry_koopa

Yay for "waggle-free alternatives!!" I only enjoyed Donkey Kong Country Returns when I was able to play the 3DS port as I found that the motion controls completely ruined the game on the Wii. I am so happy that I will be able to use my Pro Controller here.

This game is going to be great!

Re: Ubisoft Refuses to Comment on Watch_Dogs Wii U Cancellation Rumours

larry_koopa

First of all; this is all still just a rumour, so let's everybody just calm down for a moment.

Secondly, if the Wii U version does end up getting cancelled then just buy it for another system if this particular game means that much to you. You can buy a PS3 for a lot cheaper than you can buy a Wii U, plus then you'd have a console that actually has third-party games. I bought one last summer and only recently got through my backlog of third-party games.

Own a Wii U to play the stellar Nintendo-developed games (the only reason I own the console.) For any other type of gaming experience you're best to look elsewhere. This isn't exactly news.

Re: Yoshi's New Island Hatches in Europe on 14th March

larry_koopa

I have no idea why Nintendo is not developing this themselves. Yoshi's Island DS was awful. Arzest was founded by "key members" of Artoon, so I am worried about this one (plus I'm just not a fan of the art style.) People are very correct in saying that the 1995 original looks much better visually than this does, which is sad.

Nintendo doesn't let unproven developers work on their core Mario and Zelda games, so why doesn't Yoshi get the same treatment?

Re: Review: F1 Race Stars: Powered Up Edition (Wii U eShop)

larry_koopa

I think I'll just wait until Mario Kart 8 arrives.

In the mean time I'd like to suggest Modnation Racers to the NL community. I picked it up last summer as my girlfriend and I wanted an HD Kart Racer to tide us over until the release of Mario Kart 8 (we're not Sonic fans lol), and we've really gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it. The track design and handling are wonderful, plus it has a gameplay mechanic that I really wish Mario Kart would adopt; i.e. you can use a shield to protect yourself from items. I would think that anybody who has ever been hit with a blue shell mere feet away from the finish line would appreciate this idea.

Re: Netflix Wii U App Update Goes Live

larry_koopa

I have a Wii U for one reason: so that I can play Nintendo games. I'm not interested in that particular box doing anything other than playing Nintendo's outstanding first-party software. I'll happily stick with my PS3 when it comes to Netflix.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Games We'd Love to See in 2014

larry_koopa

New Star Fox and new F-Zero for the Wii U please, and full-ledged retail releases too, not budget-sized versions with hardly any content. Nintendo has wonderful IPs that they're just sitting on, refusing to do anything with. Give Mario a rest for a couple of years and give something else a chance to shine. Excluding the 3D re-release, we have not gotten a good Star Fox game since 1997. Come on, Big N.

While I agree with most of the titles on this list, personally F-Zero and Star Fox are the only ones that I would buy day one.

Re: Game of the Year: Nintendo Life's Staff Awards 2013

larry_koopa

Super Mario 3D World is simply outstanding and I am glad it is getting Game of the Year recognition across multiple gaming sites and publications beyond just Nintendo-centric ones. I know The Last of Us and GTA V are running away with lots of Game of the Year consideration elsewhere, but in terms of pure fun Mario 3D World can not be beat.

Oh, and Rayman Legends is also fantastic, though I have to admit that I own it for my PS3 as the GamePad functionality did not appeal to me... still, don't overlook this one, folks.

Re: Round Table: Let's Talk About Nintendo in 2013 - Wii U and Favourites of the Year

larry_koopa

Super Mario 3D World has caused me to forget about much of my dissatisfaction with the Wii U this year. It is such an amazing game and it's been the only thing on the system which has been able to pull me away from my PS3 this year.

2014 is going to be stellar for the Wii U. Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros... after a shakey first year the Wii U will finally have a truly killer line-up that people will not be able to ignore.

Re: Industry Analyst Predicts Disappointing Outcome For Wii U Lifetime Sales

larry_koopa

I don't understand why people get so up-in-arms about these stories. Why do you really care how well the Wii U sells? As long as you are enjoying the system and the games you have for it this sort of thing really shouldn't bother you, at least that's what I think. I loved the GameCube and that was a third-place console. Didn't bother me in the least.

Also, lets not question Knack's sales numbers just because its been bundled with the PS4 in some cases. As if Nintendo would never bundle a Mario or Zelda game with a console... not like they're doing that at the moment or anything. Nobody is saying that Knack is a better game than Mario 3D World and that's not what these sales numbers mean. Mario games sell well for years after their release and Mario 3D World will be no different. A great game like that does not go by un-noticed.

Re: PS4 and Xbox One Surpass Wii U Lifetime Sales in the UK

larry_koopa

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Wii U will be a third place console this generation, but there's nothing really wrong with that. The PS4 and Xbone appeal to a larger market than the Wii U does, hence they will sell more systems. Plus, they actually have third-party support, whereas Nintendo has struggled in this department for 20 years. But, as long as my Wii U is providing me with Mario platformers, Mario Kart, and Smash Bros., I couldn't really care where Nintendo stands in the console race.

Re: Review: Bravely Default (3DS)

larry_koopa

Solid review. Once I finish my new game plus of Tales of Xillia I think I am going to need to take a break from the JRPG scene, but I'll definitely keep this game in the back of my mind.

Re: New York Times Critic Identifies Super Mario 3D World and Wii U as Highlights of the Season

larry_koopa

I agree with the notion that a gamer does need two consoles. Mario 3D World is absolutely incredible, but so were Bioshock Infinite and Ni No Kuni. I'm proud to support both Nintendo and Sony when it comes to home consoles.

And let's not be too harsh on the launch libraries of the PS4 and Xbone. Yes, they're a little thin, but the Wii U launched with a Mario platformer which is extremely similar to the 3 titles before it, and a bunch of sub-par ports of games that had already been out on other systems for months. In the grand scheme of a consoles' lifespan the launch lineup is nearly meaningless.

Re: Xbox One UK Sales Set to Pass Wii U's Lifetime to Date Figures

larry_koopa

The Wii U is going to be a third-place console. There's going to be a lot of great games for it that I am truly going to enjoy, but it will be a distant third to both the PS4 and Xbone. The Wii U sold awful when it was the only next-gen console on the market, so why would its' sales all of a sudden jump now that the other two next-gen consoles have been released?

But you know what? There's nothing wrong with being in third place. The Game Cube was a third place console and I loved that at the time as well. As long as the Wii U is bringing me Mario Kart and Smash Bros. I couldn't really care less how it does compared to Sony and Microsoft.

Re: Talking Point: The GamePad and its Role Defining the Wii U

larry_koopa

I love Nintendo, but I hate that GamePad. Off-TV play has no appeal to me. I have a beautiful HDTV, so why on Earth would I play my games on that small screen? 3DS games on a small screen is one thing, but not beautiful HD titles. Second, besides Nintendo Land (hardly a game that I return to often) I have yet to play a Wii U game that was enhanced or made better because of the GamePad. I have beat Mario 3D World to completion, and I wish I could have played ALL of the levels with the Pro Controller. Having to stop in certain levels to blow into the mic and swipe the touch pad were pointless additions; Nintendo just threw them in there so that they could justify the GamePad as doing something.

Nintendo should make the GamePad optional. Release a bundle that comes with a Pro Controller, not the Pad, and that has a lower price point. The GamePad will still be available for those who actually care about it, but it gives another option to those who might want a Wii U but don't dig the tablet controller.

Re: Performance of Batman: Arkham Origins Wii U Version Compares Unfavourably to 360 and PS3

larry_koopa

I have played 6 different third-party games on my Wii U and every one of them had serious performance issues – and not just frame rate dips, but full-on system freezing/crashing. But yet the three Nintendo published games that I have played on my Wii U have worked flawlessly. I am perfectly happy with my Wii U because I only have it to play “Nintendo” games, but it’s unfortunate that it doesn’t seem to run third-party games nearly as well as rival systems that have been on the market for 8 years. There’s no shame in being a Nintendo fanboy while getting your third-party fix elsewhere. That’s what my PS3 is for.

Re: Review: Call of Duty: Ghosts (Wii U)

larry_koopa

As Ghosts is the first Call of Duty game that I have ever played I really have no idea how it compares to the others since Modern Warfare. I do know that I am enjoying the single player campaign (I was eaten by 4 sharks last night!), which is all I want as I don't play online. As something to tide me over until next Friday when I can have Mario it's serving its purpose rather well.

Re: Poll: Is Nintendo's Wii U Advertising and Marketing Doing Enough?

larry_koopa

A couple of things:

1) Besides one or two commercials when the system first launched last November I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a Wii U ad on my TV. Any Wii U commercials I have seen through this site, such as the Super Mario 3D World trailer from a few days ago.

2) As another user correctly pointed out when discussing that trailer, the marketing for the Wii U as a whole sends a bit of a mixed message. Nintendo is constantly saying that they need to make it clear to consumers that the Wii U is a completely different product from the Wii, but yet in that Mario commercial everybody was using Wii Remotes to play the game. Everybody knows what a Wii Remote looks like, so it might be hard for some people (i.e. parents) to differentiate between the two systems.

Re: Super Mario 3D World Producer Says DLC is Unlikely To Happen

larry_koopa

I'm sure there will be more than enough content in this game to justify the $60 price tag. Call me old fashioned, but I've never been a big fan of DLC anyways. I believe that a game should be able to stand on its own merits the day you buy it, not requiring additional content down the line to make it better or complete.
