@readyletsgo Nintendo has the cash because they don't make too many bad bets.... Going through the costs of testing the emulator and applying for the ESRB rating apparently isn't out weighing the expected return on the games.
I would buy the snot out of every classic today if it was available, but at the moment there isn't very many of us right now that would.., it seems like they are waiting for a larger userbase before releasing them. (And no, VC games won't sell a $300 console)
@Mellor2000 I agree with that, they are within their right to remove features if they don't think it will be profitable.....me as a consumer i am not a charity, so if it doesn't fit my needs it can refuse to buy it.
Capitalism is awesome like that. Two adults coming in a mutual agreement in the transfer of goods/services for an agreed upon compensation without the intervention of a third party entity.
@unrandomsam I liked the features of sonic racing(one person on the gamepad, one using the tv), but 30fps is terrible for kart racer IMO. I might try to pick up the PC version in the next Steam sale.
Kart Racers, fighters, action, platformers, shooters absolutely must be 60fps
@kyuubikid213 that's fine you think this game is worthy of a purchase even if it's missing online. Me, as a consumer will not purchase an offline kart racer. I would rarely ever get to play local MP therefore the enjoyment I would receive would be almost non existent.... Singleplayer karting just isn't my thing, they are best enjoyed with 2 or more players.
@LoBo I'd pay $40-$50 for this game if it had online... I purchased the Sonic kart racer for $50 specifically because of all the online modes. I'm not a big fan of sonic at all, in fact can't seem to grasp why he is popular, but online kart racers? Shut up and take my money.
"We think there’s a ton of content for gamers to enjoy even without the online mode."
I want to buy this kart racer but the chances I get to play local multiplayer is slim and none. I need online in my kart racer so I can enjoy multiplayer daily. The game looks appealing, but I want online for a kart racer. Whoever made this decision chose poorly. I rather have online than all of the dlc.
@RaymanFan2 I agree with your point 100%.... But somewhere down the line gamers turned the gaming hobby into a sales blood sport. They don't even play the games anymore, they sit on websites play console wars instead of experiencing the games themselves.
It's much easier to write a comment on an article about SMW3DW, sniping at Nintendo, and instead of finding out why its recieving so much praise. It's amazing the amount of negative comments from the dudebros on Eurogamer because the website chose SM3DW as its GOTY over GTA or TLOU.
Gamers rather rate a company on sales instead of its games. Strange times. In the 80's gamers didn't care about the sales, we even treated NeoGeo and TG16 as equals to Nintendo and Sega, because the games were still fun, and the graphics blew the NES out of the water nobody cared that the sales were abysmal
@bmprsvz777 what's funny is both PS4 and xBone aren't cutting edge either. Both are budget gaming systems with terrible CPU's, yet dudebro gamers are running around acting like its better than a medium specced PC
"OMG 8gb gDDR pwns" yup mated to a mobile Radeon 7850(if that) means the memory is being held back by bottle necked GPU and tablet CPU.
@ferthepoet Iwata took on the risk of going with motion control gaming..... Leading up to the release of the Wii every news outlet and dudebro in country was bashing it nonstop.... Instead of tucking tail and backing away they went with what they believed was the next big thing. There were no guarantees, "core" gamers were a adamant on how terrible it would be. That gamble paid off.
The DS, was a run away success, once again gamers slammed the system before release. Two screen gaming was another gamble that paid off. 3DS went from dead to amazing in two short years.
So Iwata should resign because one home console hasn't found its balance between price and number of exclusives yet? You know how silly that sounds? The company literally printed money for a decade, they have more than enough cash to keep playing the home console game.
If you want to worry about a companies future, worry about Sony, they are in the worst shape of the three. Then you have Microsoft pondering out loud about spinning off the console business. There will be big moves in the console space this gen, but Nintendo is the only company you can say for certain will be here next gen no matter what, both $ony and Micro$oft may not.
@SavantSupreme a larger hard drive would increase the cost of the console. I prefer adding my own storage, instead of being forced to accept something I may not want (I think 500gb) is too tiny, because I'm going to add my own storage anyways, so why not just have cheap flash memory and let the customers CHOOSE how much to add.
@jrob23 we will know how xBone and PS4 are performing by measuring the drop off leading into the next three months. If they collapse from a lack of software (as they should, who buys consoles without games, besides the most die hard of fans?)
@Peach64 depends. If they feel like they can hit their revised goal easily when they reanalyze the situation in march, I can see them pushing MK8 to just after the FY ends to give them a leg up in sales in the next FY.
If they are going to come in just short of these new revised numbers, I would say they release iMK8 before FY ends to try and meet their goals.
Then there is the third possibility, if they know they are going to be so far short of the numbers that not even MK8 can help, they would push it into early next FY to try and salvage next FY by cannabalizing current FY.
It is funny to watch gamers pretend they know what is best for Nintendo as a company....
"If they just release xy and z game I personally like",
"if Nintendo would just dump 100's of millions in advertising like Sony and Microsoft",
"if Nintendo would just dump the gamepad and split the userbase in half"
"If Nintendo would just scrap the Wii U and release a massive spec monster that would cost $500 more parents would buy the system"
"If Nintendo would stop chasing their biggest demographic of parents and instead chase after the dudebro market that doesn't like colorful non violent games, they would print money"
"But because Nintendo doesn't listen to my awesome, brilliant, armchair CEO ideas, they are struggling, serves them right, Iwata should be fired"
I'm sorry, I have heard some of the worst ideas ever coming from gamers, Nintendo would go out of business listening to any one of these terrible ideas.
30 fps is just what consoles do.... Unless your Nintendo they tend to aim for 60fps like all games should be (most anyways, RPGs are fine at 30fps)... At the end of the generation, my money is on the Wii U having more 60fps first party games than either of the sub Nextgen twins.
@rjejr I wouldn't be too worried about the Wii U version of the game, they dumped way too much money into it so far, they have to recoup those costs as best as they can.
But I think it will do pretty good on the Wii U... I'm hoping it at least matches Zombi U (500kish), that should be plenty of profit from a port. An exclusive that would be a disaster, but porting costs a tiny fraction of that
@Yorumi agreed. I'm kinda interested in Etrian Odyssey. I keep seeing IV on sale but I couldn't get into the demo... But for some reason this new one the demo is clicking with me a bit more, but I still unsure for $40
I'll bite for $20. I saw this and instantly raced to the 3ds eshop and still saw it for full price still and just now noticed it's not until January 20th... So Monday it will be mine.
I read deeper, interesting quote that backs up what I've been saying about the Wii U since launch:
"“In terms of performance, I had to down-res Armillo on the XNA build to around 580p to get it to run smoothly on the 360. On the Wii U, I’ve left it at 720p and it also has more post-processing and lighting effects going on. I’m sure the PS4/Xbox One are quite a bit more powerful in terms of pixel pushing, but the Wii U’s GPU feature set is also a lot closer to the PS4/Xbox One rather than Xbox 360 and PS3. I’d say it’s good enough for us indies.”
It's nice to seem confirmation here. The Wii U is quite a bit stronger as it handles dynamic lighting almost perfectly without dropping frames, where as on the subhd twins it would kill the frame rate immediately.... It's a big deal because how resource intensive this lighting effect has been on gaming for the last 2 decades, so it's nice to see Nintendo be the first console to support it liberally
@fchinaski Nintendo doesn't intervene very often. It's not their responsibility to do so. Because they brought over a few 3rd party games to the west it means they should be responsible for this one too?
Sorry, the responsibility rests with square.... Square doesn't think very much of North American Nintendo gamers
@Zodiak13 pretty much the same as me. I'm not the least bit impressed by the exclusives on the ps3, but I bought one for the bluray playing capabilities, which that part got the biggest workout for sure. After most if the generation went by, I still haven't purchased one game for it, no PS+. Just renting from gamefly.
Its just the quality in output of their alternative games is quite lackluster, you can tell they don't budget very much to titles that are not shooting/ultra violent/dudebro... Games like ratchet and clank and LBP, and the kart racers feel more like indie titles, i certainly wouldn't call them AAA...... If Sony doesn't care enough to out some money behind things that are not dudebro, then I shouldn't put my money in them either..... Gamefly has been great to me when it comes playstation software. All my third party games I get on PC to avoid Sony's 30fps ghetto.
Nintendo software on the other hand, they actually care deeply about their franchises, dump A LOT of cash into all of their AAA titles. They hold titles back if they are not 100% ready or the gameplay isn't quite there yet. Their love for their franchises shows in the meticulous care and polish that goes into every title. There is no other platform holder like that
@FineLerv but nobody is forcing devs to have bargain sales.... Nintendo does fantastic with holding strong... If I was an executive at Nintendo I would be adamant in not dropping prices for at least 4 years. What you are doing Is training consumers to wait for price drops. You are only reeling in people who cannot wait for the price drop.
Now with PC games it's a bit different, there isn't any licensing fees devs have to shell out to the platform holder, for the most part there isn't any packaging and shipping going on anymore, as it's all digital for the most part, if it's a multiplatform title, the marketing is almost non-existent as it can piggy back off of the console versions marketing... PC devs can come down in price much quicker and still turn a larger profit per unit than the console counter parts.
@ACK I disagree. I bought the White 8gb model for $300 and added a 2tb external drive for $60. So for the same price most paid for their 32gb Wii U, I have a 2,000gb Wii U.
I love to throw this into the face of people who say things (not you) like "people would be dumb to buy the white one, 8gb is a total ripoff"
Ninty was smart to keep the costs as low as possible so the consumer can CHOOSE if they want more space, instead of forcing people to buy a more expensive system that has more space than they care for..... People were complaining about the $350 price tag, it would have been over $400 with a paltry 500 gb drive.... I would be angry right now if I bought an expensive console with only a 500gb hard drive as I would fill that up relatively quick, so I would have to upgrade anyways..... Frankly I think Sony and Microsoft "screwed the pooch" by forcing their customers to pay extra for a HD you will have to upgrade within 2 years anyways (less if you have a lot of mandatory game installs)
Being a consumer, I prefer choice and freedom, instead of being locked into paying for something I don't want. But that's just me.
"How much you believe or the weight you give these articles is your personal choice, but we'd suggest that counterpoints of "x says this isn't accurate" miss the key issue "
Actually this is the point... A no name, too scared to share my identity is, with the help of this games "journalist" is going to put out a hit piece that shouldn't even be relevant today as these were normal prelaunch problems ALL systems to through. And now we see a parade of developers who will publically call the article BS and not afraid to hide their faces,
It was a hit article to increase click bait, supply ammo for the console wars and trolls and to steer people away from the Wii U.... Clearly Nintendo is going to have the best library of the three consoles for quite some time. It will take until e3 or even holiday 2014 for the other two systems to have as many interestng exclusives.
@ULTRA-64 no, it's easier for Nintendo just contract studios on a game by game basis... When you purchase studios, you have no control over when and who leaves the studio. The assets of a studio purchase is the personnel, the talent. So what happens when Ninty lays down 100 million dollars to purchase X or Y studio and after that acquisition half of the team leaves for other opportunities?
As much as I would love for Nintendo to buy Platinum Games, it's probably in Nintendo's best financial interest to keep contracting them to make games for them
@Bulbousaur wait. How would you expect Nintendo to even know what the xBone and ps4 would have in it back in 2011? That is such a silly statement. So it's Nintendo's fault for not being clairvoyant? I've seen people blame A LOT of things on Nintendo that's out of their control, but that one sir, takes the cake.
And no, the Wii U isn't much different than the xbox360. Both use the same CPU, and GPU architecture (PowerPC mated up to an AMD/ATI GPU), with both systems leveraging eDRAM.... The only real difference between the Wii U and the 360 is the Wii U has a more efficient CPU, a much faster and more modern GPU, 4x the main memory, and a buttload more of eDRAM.
Just for future reference. The actual architecture is quite similar, and before you say it, developing for an extra screen is cake walk. It's no different than developing for a PC with dual monitors. The OS and device drivers on the Wii U take care of all the streaming, compression, etc. the devs only have to specify which output they want to push to, TV or gamepad, just like it is developing on a PC
"this is from a (likely) third-party retail project from an earlier period in the Wii U's lifespan; that is the key point. Reading between the lines and putting together the points made in the article point to a third-party game of a reasonable size, but whatever the case reflects an early-access perspective."
But we knew all of these troubles last year. What is the point of the article? Re releasing OLD information intentionally to give the Sony and Microsoft fan boys more ammo to clobber the Wii U. It doesn't matter that these comments were regarding prelaunch. The unintelligent, the trolls, and the fanboys are already out there flogging the Wii U over this article for how the system is today, and with the limited amount of reading comprehension in today's society, people only read the first few paragraphs and go "oh so the Wii u is hard to develop for, I knew it, no way I'm buying this crap system"
The journalist here knew exactly what they were doing. Why not inside stories on the lousy sdk and documentation for ps4/xBone? We will never hear about it, but we know these systems suffered from it too with how many games shipping at less than 1080p and/or 30fps that requires a later patch to fix. That is the ps4/xBone suffering from the same issues, but we will never see articles on this from secret developers. This article was strictly intended to be used as a weapon to continue to scare consumers away from the device just as Nintendo is ramping up to launch a whole slew of big titles in the coming months, while the other two new systems will still be missing must have titles.
@TheRealThanos rofl, I just looked at the video you linked to.... it's the same game... This new video doesn't have the post processing effects in it, the white dots show the center of balance of the biker and won't be in the final product.
Wow, people blowing up at this project for no reason. Let the developers do their thing, judge the game on the final product.
@TheRealThanos white dots looks like its to show the center of balance. More as a reference point in the process of game design. Probability of that being in the final product is pretty low.
Once again people judging a game in development.....
Looks like it's still in development, but that's expected from a game more than 8 months away. These indie devs are excited to show what they have been working on to see the feedback, and they see people prejudging a game deep in development. Can we wait until it's almost ready to release before slamming it? Are you expecting a AAA experience for an indie game price?
Are you guys judging the game because of the lack of AA? I mean post processing effects are some the last touches to go on a game to clean up the jaggies. Seems unfair if that's what you are complaining about.
It looks like they have their engine built and the base of the game running. They just need to expand on the concept add more assets like tracks, cars, obstacles. Looks like it will be fun indie game.
@unrandomsam just how powerful do you think the PS4 is? It performs like a low end gaming PC. Simple games like assassins creed 4 chugs at 30 fps.... Sony claimed the GPU performs at 1.8 teraflops, but the results so far suggest quite a bit slower...... My guess is the terribly weak, pathetic tablet CPU steals GPU cycles because the GPGPU picks up the slack the CPU can't handle. After all of the theories thrown around about how great the ps4 is going to be because of having a GPGPU on die, it's hardly keeping up with my PC I built in 2011 (haven't upgraded it once either)
That's Sony propaganda at its finest. Remember when the PS3 was going to do 1 teraflop back in early 2006? Yeah, that didn't pan out either.
"we feel that this franchise could be perfect for an eShop structure on the Wii U, and allow Nintendo to produce a new title with less financial risk. This would have new tracks and look fantastic, but be available at an initial budget price of $10-$15"
Going to disagree here. The asset creation is the most expensive and time consuming part of the development process, and this suggestion if only they make the shell of the game and add tracks as dlc later, just to keep costs under $20. The most expensive part of the process is the core of the game, engine, character models, backgrounds and asset creation. It would be almost as expensive as making a full game.. They would need to charge closer to a full retail price.
Creating new levels, tracks etc is the easy part of the development process...... More likely we would see the shell of the game 30-40$ and each additional track pack at 5 or $10. This is Nintendo they are experts at monetizing the development process.
@mrgawain launch title? Flashy graphics? Crappy sales? Mass Effect 3.
I didn't learn anything new here. You can squeeze a lot of resources out of the box but in a different way, that puts that troll lie of "its on par with the subhd twins" to bed. The weak CPU lie came from the poor documented toolkit. That issue has been resolved with better documentation on how to get the machine to outperform the cpu's in the xbox360/ps3.... We knew the GPU was several generations ahead of the subhd twins. That's expected when one system has a GPU from 2005 and a device comes along with a GPU from 2011, of course there is going to be 5 or 6 GPU generations in between them.
We already knew the development tools for the system weren't up to snuff until 6 months after release of the console. That documentation has improved considerably. The ps4/xBone are suffering from the same issues. Look at resolution gate where most games are sub 1080p and 30fps where a patch is coming at a later date to fix these issues because the documentation wasn't fully ready.
This is the Wii U's reality until more first party titles arrive. It will continue to be ignored until the install base grows. The only way the install base grows ifs if more games are released, but third party games won't come until the install base grows. So on goes the cycle. Lots of 1st and 2nd party games is the only way to reverse that trend.
@LunaticPandora with most sales in NA going to children, kind of makes sense.... In Japan it's just the opposite, with mostly adults owning the devices

@Tritonus missing online has nothing to do with Nintendo. This was a code masters decision
Re: Interview: Codemasters - F1 Race Stars: Powered Up Edition
@DarkCoolEdge its a money issue. The game won't sell as much as they need it to to pay for the dev costs of adding it.
They are expecting low sales, but removing the most important feature in a kart racer will exasperate those low sales

@unrandomsam so it will be mediocrity on ps4/xBone too then. Confirmed.

There is no other platform holder like that
Re: Talking Point: An Unplanned Flash Sale Looked Like Retail Download Genius from Nintendo
Re: Talking Point: An Unplanned Flash Sale Looked Like Retail Download Genius from Nintendo
Re: Talking Point: Claims of Wii U Third-Party Development Troubles Shouldn't Be Dismissed Lightly
Re: Talking Point: Claims of Wii U Third-Party Development Troubles Shouldn't Be Dismissed Lightly
As much as I would love for Nintendo to buy Platinum Games, it's probably in Nintendo's best financial interest to keep contracting them to make games for them
Re: Talking Point: Claims of Wii U Third-Party Development Troubles Shouldn't Be Dismissed Lightly
Re: Talking Point: Claims of Wii U Third-Party Development Troubles Shouldn't Be Dismissed Lightly
Re: New Road Redemption Footage Blasts Away Road Rash Comparisons
@TheRealThanos rofl, I just looked at the video you linked to.... it's the same game... This new video doesn't have the post processing effects in it, the white dots show the center of balance of the biker and won't be in the final product.
Wow, people blowing up at this project for no reason. Let the developers do their thing, judge the game on the final product.
Re: New Road Redemption Footage Blasts Away Road Rash Comparisons
@TheRealThanos white dots looks like its to show the center of balance. More as a reference point in the process of game design. Probability of that being in the final product is pretty low.
Re: New Road Redemption Footage Blasts Away Road Rash Comparisons
Re: Silicon Knights Loses Appeal in Epic Games Lawsuit
@Pod that's exactly what will happen.... But what assets?
Seems like a hollow victory for Epic... Precursor Games can still continue unabated.
Re: Silicon Knights Loses Appeal in Epic Games Lawsuit
Pretty simple solution, declare bankruptcy, devolve Silicon Knights, continue working on the project
Re: Nintendo Download: 16th January (Europe)
Re: No Game Content "Hostile to China" Will Make It Through As Ban Lifts
So no. battlefield in China, confirmed.... Of course they will be able to pirate it on PC anyways.
Re: Feature: Nintendo Games We'd Love to See in 2014
"we feel that this franchise could be perfect for an eShop structure on the Wii U, and allow Nintendo to produce a new title with less financial risk.
Re: A Third-Party "Secret Developer" Gives an Inside Story of Working on Wii U
@Kifa doubt its Treyarch. Call of duty doesn't need very many resources to run. It has to be mass effect 3 or funky barn.
:::looks at the sales of blops2 on Wii u:::: if you can't profit off of a port from a quarter million in sales, you have bigger issues.
Re: A Third-Party "Secret Developer" Gives an Inside Story of Working on Wii U
Re: Weirdness: Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder Has a Virtual Butt Removed in North America
@LunaticPandora with most sales in NA going to children, kind of makes sense.... In Japan it's just the opposite, with mostly adults owning the devices
Re: Review: Dr. Luigi (Wii U eShop)
@Legodavid18 agreed.. My first "DR Mario" is the Luigi game and I think it's really good. My OCD doesn't allow me to put it down.

@Discipledoctor ok I just spit out my beer, thanks..... Nicole, Y?
Re: Matters of Import: Welcome To The Terrifying Yet Accessible World Of Monster Hunter 4
@Volmun I honestly see them doing mh4 for 3ds and MHF on Wii u in the west. Would probably be the cheapest way to bring MH to both Ninty systems.
Re: Next Level Games "Doing Only Nintendo Products Now"
@originaljohn wow, just before Christmas? What a cold hearted snake. I hope you find something soon.

Just creepy all the way around. Probably going to be traumatic to Alan when he realizes half the Internet is laughing at him.
Re: Shin'en Multimedia Clarifies Control Options For FAST Racing NEO
If they do online play, it's all over, they topped Nintendo's F-Zero efforts at that point.

@zionich since the reveal in January we knew this was built around online and not the other way around.

@Zaphod_Beeblebrox online component was already there. Go back to the January direct.
