Wow. I understand how giving away free Steam codes (which include the level editor) won't be an ideal solution for everyone... but it seems like a nice gesture from the Two Tribes crew after coming to the conclusion that getting the editor to work on Wii U just wasn't going to be feasible.
Hmmm.. might have to change my tune from above and give this a shot. The last level editor I spent a lot of time with was BlastWorks on Wii. If this is half as engrossing then it'll eat away entire days worth of free time.
@GreatPlayer "Guys, we should not be complaining about Nintendo's offerings again. Or, some hardcore fans are going to slash at us by saying things like 'You should feel thankful that Nintendo gives you free stuff. Nintendo has absolutely no obligations to give out any free stuff.' We should be happy with WHATEVER Nintendo gives in the Nintendo club. As a customer we have no rights to complain about Nintendo."
That's how it started. If that's not a troll begging for help to waste some time, then it's someone who deserves to be trolled. Take your pick.
He's stretching. Many of the complaints are just silly and read far too much into tiny details. But there are also some areas where Ocarina of Time (and other Zelda games) could/should improve.
The damsel in distress trope is a crutch at best. There are some racist overtones (chanting in the volcano that had to be changed, Gerudo issues) that simply don't need to be there. Turning a blind eye to the problems might make the games more enjoyable... but acknowledging there are problems and pushing for change in the industry is probably a better option for everyone.
Use a critical eye to think about the media you are exposed to - what it says, why it was produced, and how it affects your views and actions. But sometimes that also means understanding when a game is just a game, and not reading more into than you need to.
@GreatPlayer Pot, kettle? But hey, it's all in fun anyway. You practically begged to have someone argue with you from that silly first post and it would've been a slow day otherwise.
Probably only a small percentage of people cared about the level editor. I'd be willing to bet that those people care A LOT, though. I wouldn't have used the feature so have no personal investment... but it's a real shame that people who wanted to get creative won't be able to.
@GreatPlayer
I think you've missed the point entirely. I'm not defending Nintendo in any way; I'm pointing out that your attitude (and that of others complaining here) isn't reasonable.
You have every right to complain. You've been exercising that right non-stop and will likely continue to ad nauseam. But complaining about an optional rewards program on an unofficial fan site is beyond meaningless. What is it going to accomplish?
Calling you out for making selfish and childish statements isn't the same as defending Nintendo, and defending Nintendo isn't the same as idolizing them. But obviously the differences are lost on you.
Your last post hasn't changed in tone - it's not only whining that you don't get what you want (without regard to what others have or want), but continuing to attack anyone who thinks being content with what they've purchased "as is" is sufficient. As if somehow your right to irrationally complain on a fan-based website is worth more than theirs to talk about something the enjoy and are passionate about. Newsflash: if you want to complain, find an appropriate forum or a place where it will actually make a difference or get over yourself and realize that not everyone shares your viewpoint.
But hey, it's your life. If you choose to waste it being a spoiled malcontent who tries to put down people who enjoy something, have fun with that.
@GreatPlayer Wow. I overestimated your maturity/intelligence last time. Apologies. I'll just go back to the toes so that you can complain with fear or reason or rationality infringing upon you. Good luck - I'm sure that crying on fan forums will improve your lot (or popularity, or coolness, or whatever you hope to achieve) a good deal.
@GreatPlayer
Hahaha... I don't have to read people's comment, but I'm fully entitled to keep reading. Just like I'm fully entitled to point out how silly people are, whining online about childish entitlement problems. So keep on posting. I could use a few more laughs.
"Wah wah! Poor me! I've got Club Nintendo coins and nothing to spend them on. How come Nintendo doesn't care about me?"
Yep. People want to complain, they are free to keep going as long as they want.
@WindWakerLink Ah! That would be sweet if the 3DS game card cases came back into stock. Especially if NoA brought over the new cover art that Japan got. Heck... I'd probably pay just for a package of cover art inserts to switch up what's in my current case. keeping my fingers crossed
@GreatPlayer Wah wah wah. Grow up already. You don't get everything you want in life, and (while you have ever right to complain and commiserate) acting like a baby about it doesn't make any friends. There are people who don't already own some of these games who actually do want them... if you fall outside of that group then suck it up and wait until next month.
@Ernest_The_Crab Fair point. It's probably more a configuration problem with individual sites than a problem with the feature in general. I'm just bitter that - more than two years after buying a 3DS, and after multiple trips to major urban areas in the US - I've only broken 150 StreetPass tags in the last month or so.
Hmm... Glad to have waited for the review. Even if the complaints are subjective, sounds like I'll be better off grabbing the Wii U version instead. With Zen Pinball 3D and Marvel Pinball 3D already on my portable, I should be covered while travelling.
I agree that educational value is low, that games are simplistic, and that the target age should stick to the 3-4 range rather than 5-6. However... we were ok with that. The developmental difference between those age ranges is significant, and we appreciate having something that very little people can enjoy.
@WinterWarm Not bad suggestions, but still clearly above her skill level for now. That will (probably) change quickly over the next year.
We've had big success with the Learning with the Pooyoos games on WiiWare, and she really enjoys Nintendogs as well (although often needs help with the interface). Drawing, coloring, or simple musical tools are also popular activities - part of the reason that the Did It Myself game mentioned earlier was such a hit.
@Philip_J_Reed Not butting in at all, and I appreciate the recommendations. The Lola games are something that look very appealing actually. I'm a bit concerned that it's still above her level (we're just starting to work on letters; she's a bit further ahead with numbers) but it still might be a good download for her DSi even if she doesn't get full value from it right now.
It's hard to give a simple score for games like this. It's also hard to compare scores from different reviewers because opinions vary from one person to the next.
Even when first released, games in the Breath of Fire series were unabashedly old-school. To say that it hasn't aged well is kind. While some people will appreciate that, and others will be able to overlook problems due to nostalgia and familiarity, there will definitely be some who find that design issues create a barrier of entry that simply isn't worth breaking through.
I like this game and think it's still fun to play. Not everyone will, and if you don't have experience with retro RPGs you should probably approach with caution.
If getting the codes for you, and since the codes were provided for review purposes, can we offer you a review or at least some kind of feedback from the perspective of a parent with young children who will be playing the game? There would be a slight delay (my kids are currently visiting family in a different country) but I would be happy to provide feedback this way if it's helpful.
Also, I want to apologize from coming across so negatively about the review content. It's just really tough to find reviews for software that targets the early childhood market - their level of experience and attention span is so different from kids who are even 5 years old that a "normal" review often isn't useful.
As someone who has a 3 year old child looking for games to play, the quality this review (and to be clear I am talking about the review, not the score) was very disappointing.
The negatives described weren't very specific and didn't sound relevant to a three year old (ie: the target market). The positives were equally nebulous: for example, it's nice to know there is a good amount of content provided, but without some clarification about what content is included that comment doesn't help me understand what the game consists of.
Even the closing the statement: that there are "so many better options available" wasn't helpful. That doesn't point me in the right direction to find other DSiWare games that my children will enjoy. We've downloaded Did It Myself ABC123 (https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/2010/08/did_it_myself_abc123_dsiware) and that's a hit... but my other attempts to find DSiWare software appropriate for young children haven't been very successful.
I know it's a $2 piece of software. I know that the reviewer clearly doesn't belong to the target demographic. But I still had hoped to come away with a better understanding of whether this would be a good choice for my child. As it stands now, I didn't. Maybe the game is worth buying, maybe not.
Anyone who was given a code and doesn't want to use it, let me know. With two young kids in the house (ages 1 and 3) who both are eager to play games on their own, we'd be happy to give this series of games a shot despite the 4/10 assessment.
I really enjoyed the game on WiiWare. The game was long and challenging (probably unfair in spots), but the more you played the more sense the entire world made and the more enjoyable your progress.
Hard to believe it made any money given the late time it was released (and the sad state of WiiWare in general) but hopefully the sequel will still have a chance to be released on a Nintendo platform.
WOW... This is an amazing week for Nintendo downloads! Zelda, massive Monster Hunter discount, more 3DS pinball, and Rage of the Gladiator returns in portable form?
Fantastic! My only complaint is a lack of time and money to enjoy them all the way I'd like to.
Although somewhat curious about the game, GTA doesn't really do it for me anymore and I've got young kids at home that I don't want exposed to the mature themes in the game at this point - it much more likely that I'd buy something we could play together.
Nice! I have a strong preference for physical versions of my games, and have been holding out on the Ducktales remake. When this gets released, I'll pick it up for Wii U.
GTA is all about pushing boundaries - both technical and social. The series lost my interest and support somewhere after Vice City, but I can understand why others still like it.
The thing that bugs me is how gaming media approaches each release. The scores are consistently overblown and hype surrounding the games has grown to a ridiculous level.
This has two negative effects (IMO):
it means that kids who clearly aren't mature enough to understand and deal with complex negative themes seek out the game - and kids can almost always find a way to make things happen when they set their minds to it
non-gaming media picks up on the GTA hype train and it paints the overall hobby in a bad light.
Reviewer comments about rampant misogyny are disappointing. If Rockstar wants to do something truly impressive, they'd find a way to offer a good story with empowered, well-developed characters of both genders. Surely that wouldn't be so hard to do... right? Saying, "well it's GTA, what did you expect?" isn't a good excuse for pulling BS like this any longer in one of gaming's biggest tentpole releases of each generation.
Why didn't you talk about The New Tetris, instead of a Japanese import?
4-player multiplayer was included, and it's a fantastic version of the game with an amazing soundtrack.
Also, BattleTanx has a fantastic sequel. Both are fun, but you are probably better off getting the sequel if the option is available.
@XCWarrior
"I want it for Wii U, but it's already been on sale multiple times on Steam, so hard to justify the $15 price tag 3 months after the real release date."
My sentiments exactly. Looking forward to this game, but no longer willing to pay full price* after months of delay. Will grab it when there is a sale... assuming my meager Wii U basic hard drive still has space by that point.
*Edit: Well, not eager to pay full price. If I have a bunch of friends come over then this might change, because it still looks like an awesome multiplayer experience.
Stores were still charging $60 for Super Mario Galaxy 2 this past week here in Canada, and it was never a pack-in so the used market usually didn't help. Very glad to see this price drop... but can't help but wonder if it wouldn't have been more effective a couple of years ago when the Wii release schedule bottomed out.
@bahooney NSMB was a pack-in title, which probably accounts for several million sales?
I feel bad for people who change their buying habits because they want Club Nintendo (virtual) coins so badly, rather than just wanting to play the games they purchase. But not so bad that I can't laugh at them later when the rewards offered don't live up to their precious expectations.
If you bet that some silly virtual currency is going to bring you back big rewards and then end up disappointed in what is offered, that is your failure in judgement.
Yes, many of the games have been offered before. Yes, maybe you already own the ones that interest you most. But this is a solid selection of software being essentially given away to fans. It's a shame that all people can manage to post are complaints.
Well, I grabbed Zoda's Revenge and am pretty stoked to finally play this sequel to a nostalgia-filled NES classic. Also considering grabbing Mario vs DK for my nephew, as that game is really cool and has a great level design tool built in that allows you to create and share content.
Solid game on WiiWare. Not sure I'd buy a second time... but it's always nice to see more quality software made available. Hopefully Rage of the Gladiator finds more success on eShop than on the poorly supported WiiWare platform.
Wii U has a solid Fall lineup! I'm personally looking forward to the following retail games: Rayman Legends, Zelda Wind Waker HD, and Super Mario 3D World. One per month is all (maybe more) than my time/money budget can afford... and that's ignoring 3DS releases and all digital content.
When first announced, this was my "most wanted" Wii U game. There still hasn't been anything released (or even announced) that looks better.
Am I disappointed that Ubisoft held the game back instead of making it Wii U exclusive on the date initially planned? Sure. Does that do anything to affect the quality or desirability of the game? Not an ounce.
The continued delays are really killing my interest in this title... but I'm hesitant to point the finger at third party developers since Nintendo hasn't even been able to get their first-party games out on time. At this point it really seems like Wii U is the problem - and any confidence that I've had in the system improving or turning things around has been rapidly eroding.
Very interested to see what improvements are made. Will Petit Computer 2.0 be backwards compatible with code from the original?
@Barbiegurl777 Why did you delete it? Even with no ability or interest in programming, you could still just play the games that other people have created.
Heroes of Ruin had so much potential and some really great features, like well-implemented voice chat and online play, but ended up being a fairly bland and short game. I want to feel good recommending that others try the game... but can't quite do it unless you are able to find it for a budget price.
@McHaggis Agree with everything in post #8 but wanted to comment on this part: "but it's up to the courts to decide, not us Nintendo fans with little-to-no legal expertise who haven't even looked at all the relevant documents".
Sadly, the people who do decide often don't have all the facts (or a full understanding of all facts) so the decisions can sketchy anyway. Patent law is tough, and sometimes seems broken... but it is what it is. Nintendo seems to have a very convincing legal team though, so they obviously understand how the game works.
All this talk about "8 GB isn't enough" is bull. Not because it's wrong, but because the alternative of 32 GB isn't enough for any average gamer either. The whole point is moot: you need an external storage solution either way.
Iwata is glossing over some of the Wii U shortcomings, but he's right that quality software will drive sales while a lack of games on the system will cause it to languish.
Meh... Sega's recent track record isn't really something that makes this very appealing to me, but if Atlus is acquired and basically left to "do their own thing" then I guess it wouldn't matter who buys them. So that is my hope: that Atlus ends up being a reasonably independent branch able to continue to business as they are now (but maybe with access to some additional resources when approrpriate).
Although a fine read, I think putting blame on the medium isn't fair. Tablet and touch screen games can be very interesting, intelligent titles.
Gaming classics like Baldur's Gate are great on iOS, and newer titles like XCOM are also available in mobile form. Not every experience will translate well over to a touch-based interface, but it's totally possible to have games that require skill and talent to progress.
Did Wii destroy gaming by making things more accessible? No, although there clearly were examples of bad games released on the platform in an effort to chase the expanded audience. How is tablet/mobile gaming different?
@XCWarrior Different game. This isn't Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, it's the old Gameboy Color titles that are being remade. However, that's also a good game so western gamers should be able to find some solace.
@BlackSpy @Joygame51 Worth noting that you can buy the English versions of Petit Computer's guide book (in PC, iOS, or Android versions) from the official website.
It costs another $10, isn't really an in-depth guide, and doesn't offer much that you couldn't find on the web for free with a bit of effort... but it's an interesting read about the background of the program, offers nicely organized content, and includes a bunch of extra games/programs that you can try out.
I don't think it's a "must have", but am happy enough with my purchase that I think it's worth recommending as a convenient entry point to using Petit Computer.
@SuperSah
Petit Computer won't teach you anything directly. It is just a portable tool you can use without any built-in tutorials or step-by-step instructions (although it does give multiple examples where you can look at the code to see how they made games work, and a reasonably detailed reference guide). The learning aspect is something you need to do on your own by reading the in-game manual, looking for tutorials online, testing ideas to see what happens, and asking questions in the forums when you are stuck.
If you are willing to put in the time and effort, then Petit Computer can be very fun — just keep your expectations very modest if you don't already know a little bit about programming going in.
@SirQuincealot They've already given you stuff through points. If you earned enough points to be in the gold/platinum reward level, then you've probably already gotten physical or digital goods worth some decent scratch - the year end bonus is just a nice extra.
But hey, you are free to complain and whine all you want while getting down on the SMT/FE promotion. And I'm free to think that your opinion doesn't matter.
People complain about the reward selection every year.
When the exclusive Punch-Out!! digital mini-game was offered, which has never been offered again, people complained. When the prize was a cool set of buttons, people complained. When expanded the Gold rewards to include a bunch of free digital games, people complained. Now that we are finally - for the first time ever in North America? - getting a soundtrack CD from Club Nintendo, people complain.
Well I can't hear you, because the disturbing tones of Majora's Mask are creeping me out at full volume!

@WindWakerLink
This is the only link I could find right now showcasing the new covers:
http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=211734
I love the Animal Crossing art!
There are also these old covers that never made it to North America:

None of those selections were that impressive to me though.

The thing that bugs me is how gaming media approaches each release. The scores are consistently overblown and hype surrounding the games has grown to a ridiculous level.
This has two negative effects (IMO):
Reviewer comments about rampant misogyny are disappointing. If Rockstar wants to do something truly impressive, they'd find a way to offer a good story with empowered, well-developed characters of both genders. Surely that wouldn't be so hard to do... right? Saying, "well it's GTA, what did you expect?" isn't a good excuse for pulling BS like this any longer in one of gaming's biggest tentpole releases of each generation.
Re: Star Wars Pinball Bringing the Force to 3DS on 19th September
Still wishing that DLC was available for the other Zen Pinball 3D titles, but getting a new set of tables is good news regardless.
Re: Feature: Great Nintendo 64 Multiplayer Games You May Not Have Played
Why didn't you talk about The New Tetris, instead of a Japanese import?
4-player multiplayer was included, and it's a fantastic version of the game with an amazing soundtrack.
Also, BattleTanx has a fantastic sequel. Both are fun, but you are probably better off getting the sequel if the option is available.
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th September (North America)
Wanted Toki Tori 2, but was waiting for a discount. This is perfect.
Re: Review: Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara (Wii U eShop)
@XCWarrior
Re: Three Wii Classics Get A Price Reduction in North America
Stores were still charging $60 for Super Mario Galaxy 2 this past week here in Canada, and it was never a pack-in so the used market usually didn't help. Very glad to see this price drop... but can't help but wonder if it wouldn't have been more effective a couple of years ago when the Wii release schedule bottomed out.
@bahooney
NSMB was a pack-in title, which probably accounts for several million sales?
Re: Club Nintendo Rewards Updated for September
I feel bad for people who change their buying habits because they want Club Nintendo (virtual) coins so badly, rather than just wanting to play the games they purchase. But not so bad that I can't laugh at them later when the rewards offered don't live up to their precious expectations.
If you bet that some silly virtual currency is going to bring you back big rewards and then end up disappointed in what is offered, that is your failure in judgement.
Re: Club Nintendo Rewards Updated for September
Ah, the internet is such a wonderful place.
Re: Esteemed WiiWare Brawler Rage Of The Gladiator Is Coming To The 3DS eShop
Solid game on WiiWare. Not sure I'd buy a second time... but it's always nice to see more quality software made available. Hopefully Rage of the Gladiator finds more success on eShop than on the poorly supported WiiWare platform.
Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U Games of 2013 - Autumn / Fall Edition
Wii U has a solid Fall lineup! I'm personally looking forward to the following retail games: Rayman Legends, Zelda Wind Waker HD, and Super Mario 3D World. One per month is all (maybe more) than my time/money budget can afford... and that's ignoring 3DS releases and all digital content.
Re: Review: Rayman Legends (Wii U)
When first announced, this was my "most wanted" Wii U game. There still hasn't been anything released (or even announced) that looks better.
Am I disappointed that Ubisoft held the game back instead of making it Wii U exclusive on the date initially planned? Sure. Does that do anything to affect the quality or desirability of the game? Not an ounce.
Re: Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara Delayed Again on Wii U
The continued delays are really killing my interest in this title... but I'm hesitant to point the finger at third party developers since Nintendo hasn't even been able to get their first-party games out on time. At this point it really seems like Wii U is the problem - and any confidence that I've had in the system improving or turning things around has been rapidly eroding.
Re: Petit Computer Looks Set for the 3DS
Very interested to see what improvements are made.
Will Petit Computer 2.0 be backwards compatible with code from the original?
@Barbiegurl777
Why did you delete it? Even with no ability or interest in programming, you could still just play the games that other people have created.
Re: n-Space Not Currently Working On New Projects For Nintendo Consoles
Heroes of Ruin had so much potential and some really great features, like well-implemented voice chat and online play, but ended up being a fairly bland and short game. I want to feel good recommending that others try the game... but can't quite do it unless you are able to find it for a budget price.
Re: Nintendo's $30.2 Million 3DS Patent Infringement Fine Halved
@McHaggis
Agree with everything in post #8 but wanted to comment on this part: "but it's up to the courts to decide, not us Nintendo fans with little-to-no legal expertise who haven't even looked at all the relevant documents".
Re: Satoru Iwata Cites Poor Basic Wii U Sales To Rule Out Price Cut Benefits
All this talk about "8 GB isn't enough" is bull. Not because it's wrong, but because the alternative of 32 GB isn't enough for any average gamer either. The whole point is moot: you need an external storage solution either way.
Iwata is glossing over some of the Wii U shortcomings, but he's right that quality software will drive sales while a lack of games on the system will cause it to languish.
Re: SEGA Reportedly Interested in Acquiring Atlus' Parent Company
Re: Soapbox: Mobile And Tablet Gaming Is Creating A Generation Of Talentless Players
It's the games that matter, not the platform.
Re: Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Remake Coming to 3DS in Japan
@XCWarrior
Different game. This isn't Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, it's the old Gameboy Color titles that are being remade. However, that's also a good game so western gamers should be able to find some solace.
Re: Review: Petit Computer (DSiWare)
@BlackSpy @Joygame51
Worth noting that you can buy the English versions of Petit Computer's guide book (in PC, iOS, or Android versions) from the official website.

Re: PEGI Rating Suggests Star Wars Pinball Is Coming To A 3DS Near You
The small screen size is unfortunate... but portable pinball is awesome and I'd love to see the Star Wars tables released for 3DS!
This news - even if unconfirmed by Zen Studios so far - made my morning.
Re: Nintendo Download: 25th July (Europe)
@SuperSah
Re: Nintendo Reveals The 2013 Club Nintendo Elite Rewards
@SirQuincealot
They've already given you stuff through points.
Re: Nintendo Reveals The 2013 Club Nintendo Elite Rewards
People complain about the reward selection every year.
When the exclusive Punch-Out!! digital mini-game was offered, which has never been offered again, people complained. When the prize was a cool set of buttons, people complained. When expanded the Gold rewards to include a bunch of free digital games, people complained. Now that we are finally - for the first time ever in North America? - getting a soundtrack CD from Club Nintendo, people complain.
Well I can't hear you, because the disturbing tones of Majora's Mask are creeping me out at full volume!
