@gergelyv You're probably right, unfortunately. My initial post was mostly looking at it from a consumer's standpoint, because the way Nintendo used to handle these things was much more consumer-friendly. But your point about Nintendo experimenting with this practice recently and trying to see if it will increase their profit is probably not too far off from the truth.
@gaga64 the stand-alone New Super Luigi U isn't a good comparison simply because that was specifically the "collector's" edition (in a green case) of sorts. Pretty much the rest of New Super Mario U's physical run sometime after that released included the Luigi U DLC, so the game itself was never fully pulled. Never mind the fact the Luigi U DLC for NSMBU is still available to download on the Wii U to the very day.
In fact, Luigi U's run is more similar to the Wii release of Super Mario All-Stars for Mario's 25th Anniversary: it's initial release was a special edition of sorts, then it's second run was sold without the special box, CD, and booklet as a part of the Nintendo's Selects budget line. And honestly, that is a MUCH better way of handling these kinds of releases, in my opinion.
With that all said, I do agree with you wholeheartedly the Iwata touch made a huge difference in how Nintendo handled releases back then. RIP Iwata, you beautiful soul.
@Clyde_Radcliffe But they never stopped selling their anniversary titles from the Wii era within a short time period, at the very least much longer than that. They went out of their way to make the Metroid Prime Trilogy more accessible with a longer run compared to 3D All-Stars. They even added MPT to the Wii U eShop, which is still available for download to this very day.
Maybe we'll laugh at this years from now if Nintendo re-releases 3D All-Stars in a similar fashion as MPT. But ultimately, at the moment, the comparisons to those anniversary titles aren't exactly 1:1 in proving Nintendo is guilty of similar behavior during the Wii or Wii U days.
Here's a thought I just had: Nintendo has been treating Mario's 35th Anniversary with a similar level of hype comparable to the Year of Luigi from years back. but yet, why didn't Nintendo yank all of the Luigi-centric games released in that timespan when the green guy's year of celebration ended? Or to re-word the question, why could Nintendo just leave the 35th Anniversary games alone?
I guess what I'm trying to say is this is so unnecessary. But I know I'm preaching to the choir — the same choir that has been preaching this sermon for months — so I guess it is what it is. shrugs

I must have hated the Direct based on my thoughts, right? Nope. It was good. There was something for everyone, so I can't complain. Can't wait for the next one, I genuinely mean it. Guess I'm in the minority here, but I love having this collectors edition. Granted, I can only recall owning pretty much just one or two other collectors edition for games, so owning this is a bit more novel to me than it would be to most people. But as a huge Fire Emblem fan, this bundle is absolutely fantastic.
I love the detail they put into pretty much everything inside the box. For starters, the art book is really well designed. The hardcover feels great in the hands and the art inside is compiled in a nice ascetic. The highlight of the art book to me however is the gallery of FE1's character art. They are so bizarre compared to more modern FE character design, yet weirdly come across charming. It's also really hard to find to find these designs compiled neatly in one place online, so honestly, this alone makes the art book worth it to me.
I also really like the mockup NES box and replica cart. The box is nicely designed and perfectly matches the feel of how NES boxes were designed. Having a full-blown manual was also a nice touch. As for the replica cart, I feel like photos/videos don't do it justice compared to having it in your hands. It has a really neat effect with the game label being in the back, giving it a sweet behind-the-glass look in the front (if that makes sense).
I'm quite blown away by how much disapproval the replica cart is getting in the community just because it isn't a real working cartridge. Never mind the fact that would have been extremely unlikely in the first place to happen — does anyone who hold that criticism understand this would have driven up the retail price of this package quite a bit? Ironically people would have complained even more about how expensive it would have been, but I digress.
I guess ultimately at the end of the day, this isn't for everyone. In fact, the appeal of this only targets a very small slice of fans. I'll be the first to admit it's not a "perfect" collector's edition package, but it's a nice tribute to the first FE game. And if you are a big fan of the series, it is an amazing concept of a collectors edition. While many are already deeming it a dust collector item, I honestly can see myself digging this out every once in a while.
@Mountain_Man Sunshine wasn't in widescreen when it was originally released on the Gamecube either. Sure, it was probably easier to put that game in widescreen, but if fan hacks can get 64 to run in widescreen, Nintendo could if they really wanted to.
I said this before and I'll say it again: the frame rate didn't bother me too much in the demo. I'm a little bummed that it will be a slideshow of sorts in co-op, but I remain optimistic that there will be patches to improve the frame rate performance. Regardless, I'm excited to get my hands on the full game this Friday.
@Gytole Never intended to hold my breath, but we both know Nintendo has the ability to add widescreen support for Mario 64 if they wanted to. A lot of people didn't think Nintendo would add inverted options for Sunshine, and even less people expected Nintendo to add genuine Gamecube controller support. They have now delivered on both fronts, so either way, we at least know they are capable and interested to keep supporting the game post-launch. The real question is if their interest ends here with these Sunshine updates. We will have to see.
I remember playing the game when it was free on PS4 with PS Plus years ago and... well, I didn't get far into the game. While the art style was very pleasing, the controls didn't click with me. Which is kind of odd considering I enjoyed the first Endless Ocean game on Wii.
So long story short, I feel like I didn't give the game a chance. I told myself to stop blowing my gold coins on games on sale that weren't on my radar, but... ugh. I might have to cave this time since I've long let my PS Plus subscription lapse — and my curiosity is getting the best of me right now.
@CodyDogg I love how you tagged me back to this article when I said nothing about my thoughts on Trump (aside from the fact I laid out how this article was being tasteless in its terminology of "dictator") in any of my posts just so you could get attention and gloat. You're telling us to move along when you stirred up a comments section that has been dormant for days? Seriously?
Let me say this in response. You're happy Biden won? Good. Let go of your Trump Derangement Syndrome and move on. There's more to life than letting the hatred of one person fester your mind. I know that may sound like sarcastic advice, but I genuinely mean it. And to be clear, I would say the exact same thing to a Trump supporter who hated Biden to that extent.
@shazbot I just read the Kotaku PS5 review and it's a dumpster fire of a carwreck. But I'm sadly not too surprised because Kotaku and their writers are obsessed with leftist politics (just like that one article it had comparing the U.S. election to Majora's Mask). And don't bother looking at the comments section in any of their politically-tinged articles — where it's a one-sided massive echo chamber that applauds Kotaku's "witty" political observations... in its video game articles. Am I reading the Huffington Post or a gaming website?
News flash video game journalists: if you hate Trump, believe in woke socialism, and you drive an electric car, it doesn't make your article more enlightening when it's supposed to be news or a review on a game or a console that has NOTHING to do with politics.
Look, here's a novel idea: how about video game journalists stick with... um, video games? I'm not saying they can't express their political opinions: you have Twitter, Instagram, heck, even the forums on websites such as this one to express your views. But when you are writing a story that isn't listed as an opinion piece, keep your subjective views to yourself. "Just the facts, ma'am."
Dictator definition (via Dictionary.com): 1. A person exercising absolute power, especially a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession.
Last I checked, there are still three branches of government in the United States. And one part of the legislative branch (the House) is actually of the opposite party of the President. That branch still has power. There are still checks and balances in this country — that actually means something. And of course, we still have elections that can affect our country; we just had one. Regardless of who wins, one half of this country is going to be disappointed with the results because it is almost a 50/50 split. Can we actually not stoop low and call the side we don't like "dictators" when we are just saying it because we don't like their politics?
If you are going to compare our government with one that has actual dictatorship (i.e. China, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Syria, etc.), then you are absolutely wrong and you are spouting a telling political ideology. You can disagree with our President, but you have no basis for saying our country is as oppressed as the countries I have listed that have ACTUAL dictators that actually fit the mold of Tropico dictators.
Shame on Nintendo Life for inciting their own political beliefs on a video game website. There is no place for that here on a news story and not an editorial opinion piece. There is a reason why people are more untrustworthy of media than ever before when we can't even get news (let alone video game news) without bias.
EDIT: I forgot to cite my source, which is a phenomenal website that actually goes in-depth of describing the various forms of dictatorships. It even lists the dictators in power right now. Funny how the United States isn't on this list. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/dictatorship-countries
@jermasaurus Um. I thought my post made it clear — I don't care that much about frame rate. I don't care if it's on Switch PS4 or PS5 or XB1 or Series X or PC... if the game itself is fun, then the frame rate is of secondary importance to me. Now, is it nice to play games in 60 fps vs. 30 fps? Sure. But as long as it isn't chugging like it's a PowerPoint presentation, a game's frame rate doesn't mean that much to me.
If frame rate is a big issue for you, cool. You do you. If it bothers you enough to not want the game, then don't buy it. But as for me, I'm excited to get the full game when it launches.
Also to your last point, I'm pretty certain the developers are aware of frame rate issues and I'm fairly confident they will address it with a patch. The Warriors games in the past have received a crap ton of free updates/patches for months after release that adjust gameplay to improve it based on user-feedback (the original Hyrule Warriors on Wii U especially comes to mind in that regard).
Brawl not being in the top 10 is scandalous in my book. Hate the game for it's tripping and how much it doesn't play like Melee: the game had an amazing lineup of characters + stages, an insanely high number of fantastic music, and the awesome Subspace Emissary that easily beats every Smash outing of an "adventure" mode by several leagues (especially compared to Ultimate's world of light). Brawl is without a doubt my most played Wii game and the most hyped I ever felt for a game. EVER. Xenoblade being #2 is at least a pleasant surprise.
I honestly didn't notice the frame rate dropping THAT much, though to be clear, frame rate isn't an issue that bothers me too much. The funny thing is my biggest problem at first was getting over the fact it's gameplay is quite different than the first Hyrule Warriors. But the demo has really grown on me. Regardless, I hope they do patch the frame rate in some capacity when it launches. I'm fairly confident they will.
@Snatcher Exactly! Terry being ganged up by three women while he's on the ground heavily implies they were going to do much more damage to his body then he did to theirs. That was the joke, people! It even shows women in a tough self-defensive role in the spot, too!
Just... smh. Keyboard Warriors, take a break from the internet. There are much better ways of spending your free time that you waste on nonexistence controversy you like to create.
Seriously, this is offensive enough for an apology?? Um... did people actually watch to the end of the commercial to see Terry pay for his actions? Or was the cancel culture too eager to Tweet their disapproval to watch all 28 seconds?
@SwitchplayerJohn Nice! Sounds like it was worth it then. Even though I'm happy with my plain black pro controller (it's MILES better than the joycons imo), I'm kicking myself for not getting a more vivid special edition controller. The Smash Bros, Splatoon, and (especially) Xenoblade pro controllers are so dang pleasing on the eyes!
Heh, let me be clear and say I was being sarcastic in my original comment. Sincere apologies to everyone who didn't catch on (and no, I don't mean that sentence sarcastically in a meta sort of way). Fortnite is definitely not my kind of game. I'm really not into F2P kind of games, so if it's your thing, by all means keep enjoying it. With that said, I do find it pretty fishy to "include" a F2P game with a console. Sure, you get some in-game goodies with it, but... ugh. Just seems a little tacky all things considered. Again though, you do you.
Ew, no thanks. The Joycon colors look kinda cool I guess? But other than that, this bundle reeks of shame on so many levels (i.e. a free game being "included" in the bundle, a free game riddled micro-transactions, etc.) It's a smell of shame most sound-minded people can pick up the closer they get to adulthood... meaning little kids will be begging their parents for this bundle for Christmas.
Something tells me that Reggie is the kind of guy who isn't content to stay at home in "retirement" and play Nintendo games in comfort for the rest of his life. He likes being busy, which means kicking butt and taking names.
What a guy. He's definitely a stronger man than me.
Even though I have one pro controller, I never got around to getting Splatoon 2, and that fetching Splatoon pro controller bundle looks mighty tempting.
@Maulbert Respectfully, I have to disagree with you. If anything, CoD and (ESPECIALLY) sports games rarely add much to their yearly releases on top of their obnoxious amount of cosmetic micro-transactions. Just look at the recent iteration of FIFA on Switch; it's literally the same game from last year with just an updated roster. At least new rhythm games often added some new modes of some sort with the addition of new songs.
Activision without a doubt killed GH with how it released spin-off games left and right, but I still don't see the connection between the Tony Hawk game you mention and GH. In TH's case, it makes zero sense why they made it because the previous games in the series didn't need one, especially with how infamous the skateboard was for how unresponsive it was. One thing you could never really say with GH instruments is at least they worked really well; many people prefer GH instruments over RB's, myself included.
If the peripherals were what turn you off from rhythm games, then the games simply aren't for you. If you enjoy the game enough, you didn't mind getting them because that was the whole point of getting the games. Now, were the peripherals a little overpriced? Perhaps, but they weren't/aren't exactly cheap to make. Look at Harmonix now — they haven't made any any new peripherals in years because they can't find a new manufacturer willing to make them because it's hard to make a profit from that. Look what happened to Madcatz.
As a huge fan of both Guitar Hero and Rock Band (I'm even a leader for a top-tier RB4 crew right now), it always bummed me out that people simply got tired of the games. Was the market oversaturated with too many of the games in the later years? Sure, but it never stopped people from buying their yearly Call of Duty and sports games. C'est la vie I guess.
On topic, RB3 was definitely one of the best games in the series. It took a while for its indie rock-focused setlist to grow on me, but man, they picked some awesome songs for the game. I never got terribly good at keys despite the fact I'm a musician in real life and somewhat know my way around a keyboard (on top of the fact I can play expert with every other instrument), but it was still a welcome addition.
I actually own RB3 on Wii and PS3 and the difference is extremely noticeable — the Wii version has longer loading times, crashes a lot, fairly buggy at times (especially visually), and with the Wii Shop Channel closed, you can't even download any more DLC, let alone even redownload songs you own. It was nice to see the game being released on a Nintendo console (unlike RB4), but the port was fairly lackluster.
It's still fun in a pinch if it's your only option to play the game. You could do a lot worse with the countless amount of crappy Wii rhythm game shovelware.
I can't tell you how badly I want to get this. Whenever I have had free time while gaming or watching TV, I've had my laptop in front of me for two (going on three) days now with Gamestop, Amazon (who still hasn't even listed it yet), and Best Buy in tabs that I frequently refresh.
Do you see what's wrong with this picture, commenters? Do you see what's wrong with this picture, Nintendo? Part of me wants to just give up and just be content with a digital copy, but the other part of me is finding it hard to give up this stupid game completely because I find this bundle to be really, really neat. Ugh...
Oh my goodness! This news definitely made my heart jump! Never mind the fact this game didn't really have to be localized since we already have the superior remake, Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon, on DS. in the West. Never mind the fact the limited window to buy the game (which is... still pretty dumb). Never mind the fact it would have been nice to have on NSO considering it is already on the Japanese Famicom app in Japanese.
This news is great simply because it shows Nintendo is WILLING to localize older games. Sure, this game probably wasn't TOO much of a bother to translate since it is an old NES game (albeit an old-school RPG, but still). But this is groundbreaking. Remember, when they released EarthBound Beginnings on the Wii U, the game itself was already translated; it was just never released. In this case, they had to translate the game from the ground up and change the game's coding. This is extremely unusual for Nintendo.
I see a lot of people in the comments are pretty miffed about certain aspects of this release, and I totally get it, but for fans of obscure Nintendo games that were never localized, this is HUGE. I honestly won't mind shelling out the money to buy it because it is going to send a message to Nintendo that there is a market for this. I would argue it would be harder to gauge interest if it was free. Admittedly though, it shouldn't be available for a limited time on the eShop. That's Nintendo just being... Nintendo again.
At any rate though, I'm all in on this release. I'm a huge FE fan and somehow never got a limited edition release of any of the games. That's going to change with this release though! I hope I'll be able to pre-order it before it sells out. Here's to Nintendo localizing other games, especially the other FE games in the series (namely Mystery of the Emblem, Genealogy of the Holy War, Thracia 776, and the Binding Blade).
I cleaned out my room earlier this year and found my box of Pokemon Leaf Green (along with the manual) in fairly good condition. Even though I was throwing out any trash that I found, I knew as a rule of thumb NOT to throw away anything Pokemon-related due to their desired collectability.
So now along with Leaf Green, I have my boxes of Ruby, Emerald, and almost all the main Pokemon DS games with their manuals. I used to cringe at the idea of selling my Pokemon games if times got tough, but apparently, I could just sell the boxes and still do well.
@Lizuka Well, it didn't work for me, sadly. In fact, I tried going back to the first day multiple times and it still did nothing. Are you sure you had the same glitch as me?
I've experienced this glitch before (it is also in the N64 version). Basically, if you go to the Honey and Darling gallery (particularly if are shooting for the 3 day in a row heart piece), there's a chance your Ocarina was remapped to the B button. Know what this means?... well take a wild guess which button the sword uses. What's weird is you can still use your B button attacks in your mask forms. (Using the Song of Time doesn't fix this glitch either, by the way.)
Anyways, the fix in-game is to get on Epona and hop back off (which worked for me). This remaps the buttons back to the original settings. If you are early in the game before getting Epona...well, you can try to get through temple 2 using your mask forms to attack. Or delete your save...yeah let's not go there. Let's just say I'm glad Nintendo is fixing it. This is not a fun glitch to mess with and should be patched. I was freaking out on what to do when this happened to me. I had to thoroughly comb through countless forums to find the fix I mentioned.

Re: It Seems The Debug Cubes In The 3D All-Stars Version Of Mario Sunshine Are No Longer Visible
@Mountain_Man Sunshine wasn't in widescreen when it was originally released on the Gamecube either. Sure, it was probably easier to put that game in widescreen, but if fan hacks can get 64 to run in widescreen, Nintendo could if they really wanted to.
Re: Review: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - Not The Zelda Game You Want, But Perhaps The One You Need
Re: It Seems The Debug Cubes In The 3D All-Stars Version Of Mario Sunshine Are No Longer Visible
Re: It Seems The Debug Cubes In The 3D All-Stars Version Of Mario Sunshine Are No Longer Visible
So Sunshine got all these fixes, which I love! Thank you, Nintendo! But any chance we'll get Super Mario 64 in widescreen? Pleeeeease, Nintendo?
Re: Abzu Is Just $1.99 On The Switch eShop, That's 90% Off
I remember playing the game when it was free on PS4 with PS Plus years ago and... well, I didn't get far into the game.
Re: Fittingly, Tropico 6 Has Just Launched On Nintendo Switch
Re: Fittingly, Tropico 6 Has Just Launched On Nintendo Switch
Re: Fittingly, Tropico 6 Has Just Launched On Nintendo Switch
Re: What's Up With The Frame Rate In The Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Demo?
Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Wii Games
Brawl not being in the top 10 is scandalous in my book. Hate the game for it's tripping and how much it doesn't play like Melee: the game had an amazing lineup of characters + stages, an insanely high number of fantastic music, and the awesome Subspace Emissary that easily beats every Smash outing of an "adventure" mode by several leagues (especially compared to Ultimate's world of light). Brawl is without a doubt my most played Wii game and the most hyped I ever felt for a game. EVER.
Xenoblade being #2 is at least a pleasant surprise.
Re: What's Up With The Frame Rate In The Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Demo?
I honestly didn't notice the frame rate dropping THAT much, though to be clear, frame rate isn't an issue that bothers me too much. The funny thing is my biggest problem at first was getting over the fact it's gameplay is quite different than the first Hyrule Warriors. But the demo has really grown on me. Regardless, I hope they do patch the frame rate in some capacity when it launches. I'm fairly confident they will.
Re: SNK Apologises For "Offensive Ad" Featuring Fatal Fury's Terry Bogard
@Snatcher Exactly! Terry being ganged up by three women while he's on the ground heavily implies they were going to do much more damage to his body then he did to theirs. That was the joke, people! It even shows women in a tough self-defensive role in the spot, too!
Just... smh. Keyboard Warriors, take a break from the internet. There are much better ways of spending your free time that you waste on nonexistence controversy you like to create.
Re: SNK Apologises For "Offensive Ad" Featuring Fatal Fury's Terry Bogard
Seriously, this is offensive enough for an apology?? Um... did people actually watch to the end of the commercial to see Terry pay for his actions? Or was the cancel culture too eager to Tweet their disapproval to watch all 28 seconds?
Re: Nintendo Is Releasing Three Switch Bundles In Japan Next Month
@SwitchplayerJohn Nice! Sounds like it was worth it then. Even though I'm happy with my plain black pro controller (it's MILES better than the joycons imo), I'm kicking myself for not getting a more vivid special edition controller. The Smash Bros, Splatoon, and (especially) Xenoblade pro controllers are so dang pleasing on the eyes!
Re: Where To Pre-Order The Gorgeous Limited Edition Fortnite Nintendo Switch Bundle
Re: Where To Pre-Order The Gorgeous Limited Edition Fortnite Nintendo Switch Bundle
Re: Brunswick Corporation Elects Reggie Fils-Aimé To Board Of Directors
Something tells me that Reggie is the kind of guy who isn't content to stay at home in "retirement" and play Nintendo games in comfort for the rest of his life. He likes being busy, which means kicking butt and taking names.
What a guy. He's definitely a stronger man than me.
Re: Nintendo Is Releasing Three Switch Bundles In Japan Next Month
Even though I have one pro controller, I never got around to getting Splatoon 2, and that fetching Splatoon pro controller bundle looks mighty tempting.
Re: Anniversary: Dig Out The Plastic And Reform The Band - Rock Band 3 Turns 10 Today
Re: Anniversary: Dig Out The Plastic And Reform The Band - Rock Band 3 Turns 10 Today
Re: Of Course Scalpers Are Already Listing Fire Emblem's 30th Anniversary Edition
Ugh...
Re: The Original Fire Emblem Is Coming To The West For The First Time Ever On Switch
Re: Popular Twitch And TikTok Star Pokeprincxss Has Been Sued By Nintendo
Me reading the article: Hmmm, it's kinda odd Nintendo is targeting her specifically...
"...she also works in the adult entertainment industry..."
Me: facepalms That was your first mistake, fam.
Re: Overcooked 2's Moon Harvest DLC Adds New Levels, Recipe And More
For a second when I saw the headline, I thought Overcooked was having a DLC crossover with Harvest Moon.
Re: Don't Worry, Nintendo Says It's Working On Animal Crossing's New Passport Bug
Huh, didn't even notice this glitch after the update. Glad Nintendo is on the ball here before I was.
Re: Random: eBay User Makes Small Fortune Selling Old Pokémon Game Boxes And Manuals In 'Good' Condition
Re: Majora’s Mask 3D Patch Irons Out Honey & Darling Glitch
@Lizuka Well, it didn't work for me, sadly. In fact, I tried going back to the first day multiple times and it still did nothing. Are you sure you had the same glitch as me?
Re: Majora’s Mask 3D Patch Irons Out Honey & Darling Glitch
