Re: Review: Battalion Wars 2 (Wii)

Wesker

I don't understand why this game hasn't done better. I really enjoyed it and managed to complete it 100%, which is rare for me.

It has a nice story and plenty of variety. Of course I realise that if you compare it to similar games on other platforms it seems a bit kiddish. But its also very accessible and friendly and I would of thought that its a great entry point to the genre as well as being outstanding on Wii.

I've seen it going for half price in some shops and as a budget game its definately worth picking up.

Re: Welcome to the New Look Nintendo Life!

Wesker

Thats a good point actually. WiiWare World and Corbie got plugged in the Official Nintendo Magazine by 2d Boy. And now people won't even be able to find WiiWare World cos it doesn't exist anymore.

Re: Welcome to the New Look Nintendo Life!

Wesker

As far as I know, this all started from VC-reviews; a place where you could find out what games were good on the Virtual Console and which were best avoided, wriiten by independent gamers.

Now it has come to this. And I'm sad

Re: Welcome to the New Look Nintendo Life!

Wesker

It all looks too generic for my liking and for that reason alone I think you'll turn off future internet surfers. To be honest I'd might as well just go to ign or one of the countless others now. You've lost the simple charm that you had before.

Re: Review: The Tower of Druaga (Arcade)

Wesker

No thanks. Thats 4 and 0 for me out of the initial arcade releases. However, I think there is great potential for this department of the VC and I'm glad that the VC as a whole isn't being overlooked by Nintendo.

Re: Bubble Bobble Plus!

Wesker

I was saving 800 points for this but couldn't wait any longer and got Super Punch Out today. Anyway this and Adventure Island are still my most anticipated WiiWare titles. So hurry up and get them out NoE!...Please

BTW does anyone know why this is published by Square Enix and not Taito?

Re: Review: F-Zero (SNES)

Wesker

Thanks Shinnock. I just can't understand why its 9/10 when it's a racing game with no multiplayer and appears to be superseded by F Zero X in every way. At the time I might of been impressed by the 'mode 7' graphics, but now I don't think thats relevant.

Re: Review: F-Zero (SNES)

Wesker

Why does this game get 9/10, the same score as F-Zero X, when everybody seems to agree that F-Zero X is better? Which game is better F-Zero or F-Zero X? Surely it is possible to split them, especially now you're scoring games out of ten.

Re: Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)

Wesker

I can't get over the size of the sprites in this game considering its on the NES!

This game has it all; platforming, fighting, strategical use of characters and weapons and its an officially licensed game! The only problem with this game is the difficulty; its too hard! But even though its frustrating its still fun and I feep coming back to it over similar games that are generally more highly revered. Maybe I'm just sadistic like that.

By the way, the Angry Video Game Nerd does a wicked review of this game, you should check it out on youtube. That'll tell you if you want to buy it or not.

Re: Review: Sonic Chaos (SMS)

Wesker

I reckon these 8 bit Sonic games represent great value, especially for youngsters. They're a lot of fun, have nice bright graphics, and are much easier than other retro games.

Re: Review: Harvest Moon (SNES)

Wesker

@ks8 I wouldn't bother if i were you. You have to be pretty dogged to enjoy this game i think. I gave it up after a few hours. Maybe if the graphics were nicer to look at i could have managed more, but overall i was pretty disappointed with it after i had been drawn into buying it out of curiosity and positive reviews. So I'd urge you to steer clear if you're coming from the same angle as what I was, except you probably know what you like more than what i did at the time...

If you like querky, leftfield type games i'd recommend pokemon snap. Thats a lot of fun! Though it does have a very limited lifespan.

Re: Take Five and Double It!

Wesker

I think this is the best thing you've ever done! Even though I don't agree with all your ratings, I think you overrate a lot of mediocre games as well as lay into some perfectly solid games, at least now I can agree 100% with your perfectly rated games! Before I got the impression you were chucking the 5 star rating around far too liberally. 5 stars could mean anything from 'decent at the time within its genre' to 'absolute gaming perfection'. Now you can click on the score filter and it doesn't come up with a squillion perfectly scored games. Cut a long story short I'm one happy gamer

Re: Review: Onslaught (WiiWare)

Wesker

@Bahamut and 0-Watt. Essentially what you're getting on Wii-Ware is mini games and they can be good at what they do. However just like the many mini-game compilations that are available in retail most of the time they don't add up to much.

By the time you've bought a few of these "highly rated" WiiWare titles you will have come to the same price as a Metroid a Zelda or Mario game, especially as these games are available quite cheap second hand.

I know that I'd rather save my money for something truly epic rather than wasting my time and money on ultimately unsatisfying games. So far WiiWare has produced World of Goo (a one off) and updated versions of old puzzels games that I already knew I like. The rest is a waste of time and money.

I don't care how small the team was that made the game or what there budget was, all I care about is how much bang I get for my buck. And I'm saying that getting excited about an FPS on WiiWare is silly. You'd be much better off spending your time and money on a proper retail game that will really satisfy you.

Re: Review: Onslaught (WiiWare)

Wesker

I've been coming to this website since it was launched and looking back at their record I believe their scores to be fair and accurate. In fact I wish thses guys also reviewed retail games.

On the other hand I think WiiWare is a bit off a rip of for most gamers (the one's who like to consider their purchases before rushing in). Case in point, you can buy Metroid Prime 3 for £15 online or second-hand then you can play it an enjoy it to the maximum, then trade it in to the value of about £8. So overall the the game cost you £7 the same price as Onslaught.

Now Corbie says we shouldn't compare retail and WiiWare points but I am going to compare them cos overall the cost is about the same. And Metroid Prime 3 is indisputably a far superior gaming experience to Onslaught.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog

Wesker

This game is pure fun. Ok, so you might not come back to it as much as Super Mario Bros. but I guarantee that you'll enjoy the first play through... a lot!

It is easier than Sonic on the MD, which makes it more enjoyable for beginners. Quite possilby the best 500 pointer imo.

Re: Super Metroid

Wesker

I've downloaded a lot of games from the VC that I've been disappointed with. But this isn't one of them! When you're playing this game (even now 2009) you realise that you're playing one of the best 2d adventures ever made.

If you're looking for a game that is actually worth your wii points, and despite the improvements in graphics and sound etc. that can still draw you in and give you a marvellous gaming experience then THIS IS IT!

A genuine 10 star games

Re: Wonder Boy in Monster Land

Wesker

I'm curious about this game but can't decide whether to get this or the mega-drive version...

The first level looks the same but there seems to be more things going on in the megadrive version. mmmmm?

Re: EU WiiWare Update: Lonpos

Wesker

Maybe we'll look back and say - 'do you remember the week we only got lonpos' and we'll laugh and say 'arrr yeah those were the days'. Cos we'll be so happy with all our amazing WiiWare games that we won't care that just for one week it was total crap. But it ain't funny now

Re: Talking Point: Is Nintendo Ignoring WiiWare?

Wesker

Why's everyone doubting Nintendo. Of my ten favorite Wii games 9 were published by Nintendo and the other one is RE4.

I think WiiWare is for the likes of Frontier and 2D Boy and other small-time developers to get some attention, would we have bothered with Lost Winds if we'd had a Mario game at launch?

I definately wouldn't want Nintendo to get distracted from making big retail games, for example I would freakin' love a new full-blown Starfox game, that would make my 2009. (what are the chances I wonder?)

Re: Talking Point: Is the Virtual Console On The Slide?

Wesker

At first I was interested in the VC because it let me go back and check out the games I missed along my own console journey, (which was Master System > Mega Drive > N64 > PS2 > Wii).

But now I've reached the point where I'm more interested in VC releases than retail releases (except the obvious Mario and Zeldas etc.) Thats because I've realised that 10 year-old AAA games are much better than the average releases today. I don't know what that tells you about the modern game industry other than graphics aren't everything and games were more fun in the past.

Bottom line is that the VC is essential for gamers like me who have to fill there time between the Nintendo masterpieces and If the VC is allowed to dry I'm gonna be mighty angry!!!

Re: EA's Moore Perplexed by World of Goo Success

Wesker

@Corbie I thought EA were in their prime for the megadrive era. It was games like Road Rash, Desert Strike, EA Hockey and Madden 92 that made the Mega Drive a real boy's favourite over Nintendo's girly SNES.

However, since then EA has been on the slide and even though I've bought games like SSX Blur, Medal of Honour and Tiger Woods for the Wii, I've been dissappionted with all of them and eventually traded them in.

So now I don't buy any EA titles.

Re: Talking Point: Is the Virtual Console On The Slide?

Wesker

I hate the fact that we now have a 2 week gap between VC releases! So basically we have half the amount of VC games coming out and we have to wait twice as long to get them. All because of WiiWare.

I think what Nintedo is doing is sacrificing the VC to give a leg up to WiiWare and I understand why they're doing it, eventually they're going to run out of classic retro games to release and need high quality original titles to take up the mantle.

But from a personal point of few, I would rather Nintendo ditched WiiWare and brokered deals with other games developers to release their back catalogues instead, to boost the VC (like EA for example). Though I guess for the future of downloadable gaming its better that they invest there efforts in WiiWare, even though, at the moment it offers very little in terms of value or quality.

BTW excellant article and thanks for raising the issue.

Re: Review: Protöthea

Wesker

So what decent multidirectional shooter can I buy with my wii points? Something in the mould of desert strike on the Mega Drive.

Re: Tiki Towers Lined Up For A Christmas WiiWare Launch

Wesker

Thanks for the info guys! I really hope world of goo is out for christmas, not that i'll be able to get the rest of my family off mario kart anyway, but i'm still hoping.

About demon212, i think he should make a comeback. With outrageuos comments like dr. mario is a poor man's tetris, picross is a glorified minsweeper and banjo kazoie was the game mario64 should of been. I think he is sorely missed, if only for comedic value.

Re: Tiki Towers Lined Up For A Christmas WiiWare Launch

Wesker

Fair enough. I think I'll start a new account as well, can't even remember why I chose this username anyway. I kind of miss demon212, he used to make some outrageous comments. If anyone cares...

Its not fair that we don't have World of Goo yet.
