For many Nintendo fans racking up reward coins - or stars in Europe - has been part of their gaming lives for a while now. The idea is people can use their Coins to purchase Nintendo goodies and sometimes the rewards catalogue even features a few games for people to pick up.
The North American Club Nintendo has been allowing players to use their Coins on a download code for Super Metroid and naturally many people took up the offer, what with it being an absolute classic.
These people may have been irked to learn that Super Metroid is actually on the way to the Wii U Virtual Console from 15th May as part of the Famicon's 30th anniversary and when it does appear it will only cost 30 cents.
However, Nintendo has noticed this injustice and has given Wii U owners who used their Coins on Super Metroid their 150 Coins back. What's more, they still get to keep the download code, which they may use on their Wii or Wii U.
Here's the full message Wii U owners received:
Dear Club Nintendo Member,
Thank you for your recent order of Super Metroid from Club Nintendo. We're sending this notification to let you know this title will be available from the Nintendo eShop for Wii U for 30 cents, as part of a special promotion starting on May 15.
Because you are a Wii U owner, we have refunded the 150 Coins you redeemed for Super Metroid. You may still use the code you received to download the game for free to play on Wii or Wii U. We hope you enjoy your game, and visit Club Nintendo again soon.
It's good to see that Nintendo appreciates the fact some people wasted their Coins on something they could have picked up for pennies and has given them a refund.
What are your thoughts on this gesture? Were you one of the poor souls who picked up Super Metroid from Club Nintendo? Let us know in the comment section below.

Very generous. I would have ordered Super Metroid myself if I had known this would happen.
This is why I love Nintendo
At least they are giving people their coins back. That's definitely a plus.
"It'll be 30c on the Wii U* Virtual Console soon"
Nintendo cares
cute
Got to love the Big N.
I got SM for 150 coins but I don't have a Wii U. I'm assuming I don't get the coin refund. Oh well, it's not like there's anything I'd use the coins on this month. Maybe next month there'll be an N64 Zelda or something.
This is really cool, shows that despite all the negative feelings some peeps have towards them Nintendo is trying to do right by its customers. Nice to hear some good news! Despite DICE & EA this has been a pretty good week for WiiU.
1) Nintendo confirms a "WiiU Software Showcase" for E3.
2) Two more eShop titles announced
3) MH3U a "Smash hit!" (future MH looks good for WiiU/3DS on the back of this)
Let's not get bogged down with negative WiiU/Nintendo news, we still have a lot to be be happy for
This is what I call customer service.
When I saw Super Metroid was on offer, I immediately thought it was stupid timing because of the upcoming Wii U promotion. Nintendo should've coordinated things better in the first place. This is better than nothing though, I suppose.
Classy move, Nintendo!
Well done Nintendo. You see, this is the main reason i am converting to the Wii U as my primary gaming console in Two weeks.
I am Sick to death of watching these relatively new companies on the scene using DISGUSTING and underhanded tactics to try and force Nintendo out of the market. The console war is well and truly on right now but 'N' will be getting my money and backing... here is why:
The only company you can trust to do the job right in times like these is one thats been here from the early days.
I've never really owned a Nintendo console apart from the SNES as this was mainly a SEGA household but i am getting childhood excitement just thinking about buying my Wii U.
Time for more people to start giving these guys a break as they are the only company that is still about REAL gaming, quality and original games and most of all FUN!!!
Ironically, this punishes the biggest of fans, who withheld from spending coins on Super Metroid because they knew that it was coming soon for 30 cents (like me)... but I'm still glad they did it.
@Wanderhope Are you complaining that you will now have to spend 30 ct for Super Metroid? Argh...guess you would still complain if it was 1 ct.
Your not really punished @wanderhope
@manu0 @PinkSpider Whoa, I think I accidentally became a troll. Believe it or not, I'm not one of those people who think that game companies owe me anything. I am thrilled to have the game for 30 cents, I just found the situation ironic and mildly amusing,
so free Super Metroid for them? Lucky.
@TwistedRabbit that is EXACTLY what i plan to do and exactly why i'm leaving their fan base. I think it's important that we take Nintendo into the future with us so our children (If i eventually stop being lazy and settle down) can play on a TRUE gaming system. I'm 26, so luckily i had what i consider the golden age of gaming, but i'm starting to believe only Nintendo can even come close again.
I'm definitely feeling the positive spirit from all of you.. That's awesome!
Awesome. I saved my coins because I knew it was releasing for 30 cents. I should have got it earlier! XD
So the people who got it from club nintendo and has a wii u gets a free Wii version? Aww man, me jealous!
It's the nice little things like this that make a company great. Way to go Nintendo!
I had it already years ago so i don´t use any coins. May I have my 800 points back? hehe.
One of the greatest games in all existence selling for 30c. No game has ever made people scream out loud like that out of pure admiration for it's striking uniquity and atmospheric nature.. It's a god send.
Ah, what a nice company Nintendo is... a little dumb in the head sometimes when it comes to marketing, but the nicest major company around.
I'm counting down the days to when I can purchase it next week
@Wanderhope First World Problems #7: Nintendo gives out one of the highest rated games in history for free, and it "punishes" people.
First World probllllllllllllems!
I actually didn't get it because I knew it was coming for 30 cents. Still good to see this thing happens.
This is why I love Nintendo. Very classy move. Other companies wouldn't care. They do. It's just like the Ambassador Program, how they gave us tons of games then in compensation for the price drop. My friend was checking out my Ambassador 3DS the other night and she was really impressed. I had forgotten (!!!) how much awesome free stuff Nintendo gave me that year. Not just from Ambassador but also Excitebike, Four Swords, etc.
Take some time to appreciate Nintendo, my friends. They know how to treat their fans well.
I bought it the day before it was on Club Nintendo, does that mean I can get my money back? No? Why not? You mean because I actually pay attention and knew it was going to be 30 cents, since you announced the promotion and posted it on the eshop and website, but I wanted it earlier anyway? Seems unfair to me. I want my $8 back.
@Wanderhope It doesn't punish anyone who was withholding. The Club Nintendo version is the Wii version. So, if you want to play it with the game pad, you'll still have to pay 30 cents for the Wii U version.
@ExHaseo "You may still use the code you received to download the game for free to play on Wii or Wii U." But it doesn't matter, I wasn't complaining at any rate.
Why would anyone use their club nintendo coins on it when it was going to be 30 cents in just a short time anyways?
@idiot-pill
couldn't agree more. Nintendo has my full support.
@SunnyShores Good man! Here's hoping everyone else shares our viewpoint in protecting one of the most important figures in Gaming history. The day when only Sony and Microsoft are left in the Industry is the day i hang up my controller and take up Archery.
@Idiot-Pill
I can respect taking Nintendo into the future, but why can't the Playstation or Xbox be considered real gaming systems? If I had kids, I would have them play both Nintendo platforms and Sony systems at the very least. Sony is a major part of gaming, and I would have no problem with my kids having a Playstation alongside Nintendo's systems.
And the fact that Sony took some potshots at Nintendo does not bother me, since Sega and even Nintendo did the same thing back in the 90's. Its all part of competition, and I would not mind seeing Nintendo get a bit edgy again in their ads. That's why the 16-bit era is my favorite generation. It was highly competitive, and both Sega and Nintendo were constantly taking shots at each other in ads.
And Sony fanboys don't bother me, since all systems(including Nintendo) have their rabid fanboys that will drive you insane. Its all part of the game in the end.
But Sony and Microsoft are "real systems" just like Nintendo. What is it about those two that somehow don't make them real systems?
@Metal_Sonic i did, i had to play it on an old wii first to get a feel for the game
@Caryslan Absolutely, i should have made myself clearer.
This is mainly a matter of preference and my own moral compass. Of course we must consider The Playstation 3 and the Xbox360 (both of which i own) as serious games consoles, but i'm sure you would agree yourself, the original point of providing a quality, family, fun and imaginative experience at a reasonable cost for the family home has kind of lost its way in search of the mighty dollar. I love Nintendo because not every game has to be a movie style epic. Sometimes, you jump on turtles and collect coins just because it's fun and just because you can
For instance, Sony and Microsoft were first and foremost business corperations, Nintendo were first and foremost family entertainment publishers and distributors. It is in their blood and their history.
Don't get me wrong, i've had a hell of a blast with my other 2 machines, but to me i feel its time to get back to something deeper seated in classic quality, and still with its retro roots to a degree.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my previous post and enjoy your day/evening.
You're as cool as ever Nintendo! Hmm, this makes me wonder. If Nintendo has to cut the Wii U's price after E3, how will they compensate people? The Wii U VC is already out. I am sure they'll thing of something!
@Idiot-Pill
You totally speak my mind!
Strange question if i dont have a wii u, could i still get it and not download it. Would i still get the club nintendo refund?
Nice move Nintendo.
I don't think they're necessarily getting Super Metroid for free on WiiU eShop VC. Just free for vWii channel. They'll still have to buy it at 30 cents for the promotion or upgrade at a later date to play Super Metroid on their WiiU, not vWii channel. unless I misread something.
Love Nintendo. Microsoft and Sony would never do this.
Good on Nintendo. They always treated their customers like royalty, even if it was just to dig deeper into their wallets in the long run. Hey, good business!
Good for those of you that have a Wii U!
I only have a Wii, so I decided to jump at the chance to redeem this. I haven't beat it yet, but it's been a fantastic experience so far (just beat Ridley).
I don't think it was poor timing, either. While I'm sure it was annoying to Wii U owners who redeemed it, I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of CN members still don't have a Wii U (given it's lacking sales), meaning the upcoming 30¢ deal doesn't affect the majority of users.
@Caryslan
I see what you both are saying but I can agree with Idiot that Nintendo is a "true" gaming console as that is solely it's focus. Sony and Microsoft are trying to make a system that does everything. In fact that is Sony's tagline in their ads.
Now that isn't really a knock on Sony or Microsoft. If I could afford them I'd buy them all but Nintendo has always had the most affordable console so I always buy it first when having to make a decision on a new system. And they all have great games and I think it is stupid when people have this loyalty to a faceless company and feel like they have to rip on other people who like everything instead of joining their imaginary Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo team.
@Strongo9
Thanks Debbie Downer!
Oh, Nintendo, you are so out of touch with reality. How do you expect to make money if you keep refunding people? You should not even have Club Nintendo anyway. How come you give games for coins instead of selling them? And a yearly gift for registering many games? You are gonna lose the console wars doing things like that.
Thanks for being so awesomely old fashioned, Ninty. I think I am gonna pick that game up even if I already bought it on Wii.
Glad to read this article, it makes me happy I'm supporting a company with at least some integrity. After all the problems I've had w/ Sony (PS3), and there unwillingness to even achieve basic customer service, it makes my decision to be mainly a Nintendo guy easier. I'm sure I will own a PS4/720, but I will only buy a few games ever, like I did w/ the PS3/360.
I do hope that info like this encourages people to consider Nintendo products in the future. I have bought a few of my friends WiiU''s in hopes that the fun they are having will rub off on other people they know. All my friends have been suprised by how much fun they are having with the WiiU, and have bought a few games of their own (I supllied NSMBU, LC: Undercover). If you own a WiiU show it off to friends, you may be suprised by their reaction. Only my FPS gamer only friends have not shown any interest when shown the console.
Beats Microsoft who wouldn't refund 7 months of xbl sub when my account was hacked and screwed up so I could no longer use that gamertag.
They had the cheek to inform me that if I created a new gamertag on the 360 I would get 1 month of gold free.
@sinalefa how are they out of touch with reality? Club Nintendo is meant to be a reward program to Nintendo's valued customers. I think it is good business to offer rewards to valued customers, it's keeps people coming back and builds greats customer apperciation.
@Draken18 I believe the entire 1st paragraph of his post was sarcasm, playing off the words of some of the recently posted articles with negativity towards WiiU and Ninty's strategies.
I can't wait for .30 Super Metroid! I've been playing original Metroid, and Metroid Fusion to get me ready. I love me some Super Metroid! (but it makes me want a new 2D Metroid all the more)
$0.30 is free in my eyes~
By the way, first time they played it, was anybody who played the original NES Metroid SHOCKED at how ginormous Kraid was?
I have been without my WiiU for a month now. Faulty unit replaced with a new unit by Ninty AU and sent back to me. Great, but they stuffed up my accounts and I cant log in or access my digital content. Yep, it has been back there for 2+ weeks and they still cant work it out even with NCL help. Anyone else heard of this issue, they tell me its a first.....not real happy....very frustrated
@Idiot-Pill /applause
@DkFluttershyGuy I was, for sure! Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how gargantuous he had become. Thought he would literally eat me alive. Possibly come out of the screen too. Tho he was not much of a threat compared to his old smaller form depicted in the original.
@Idiot-Pill I salute you!
@NintendoPro64 Thanks man
With the Wii U VC, i have to admit i was dissapointed when i saw the Wii U's line up after seeing the Wii's on Wikipedia. But as my friend said "Mate, don't forget it's 6 months old, it's gonna take some time". Obviously, i immediately felt silly.
I think content can be refunded if it's foreseen they will knock the prices down and failed to announce it but sadly, it's just a gamble with the console. It is down to us to decide when to be business savvy with buying our consoles so i guess that would mean we have no right to complain. Don't get me wrong, i've not set out to destroy what you're saying because i am actually going to be buying one in two weeks! so thats a very real situation for me
At the end of the day, as long as i get a good service and hours of fun i personally don't mind if the price drops after i bought one. A little gutted in a comedy way, but none too bothered.
Enjoy your day.
@Fusion14 @DarkToonLink
Thanks for supporting my ramblings! Was beginning to think i was preaching my ideals a little, maybe pushing my point a little too strong.
Have a good un' fellas.
Wow, Kudos to Nintendo! Totally unnecessary, but shows they care about their customers.
@hcfwesker
Thanks for catching the sarcasm on my post. No other company does things like that, and that makes me care about them even more
I should of bought it then, and given away the code.
Seemed silly to offer that game anyways this month. Really just offer something else good and wait until after the promotion is over - that would make the most sense.
Nintendo is cool like that. I still remember the Ocarina of Time OST thing for people that registered the Ocarina of Time 3DS game to their club Nintendo account. That was a good event. (Chuckles)
Class act Nintendo all the way around on this one. Among the big three over time they do seem to stick their neck out over the years to do the right thing on an individual or group level.
mmm does anyone has a super metroid download code that would like to trade with me for aura aura climber and donkey kong download codes or either super punch out or starfox 64 download code, please i really want this game!
