@SomeBitTripFan I don't personally agree that progression has to be based on abilities and upgrades. There's no set definition when it comes to that. I'd agrue a Metroidvania is defined by its guided non-linearity. In that the game ultimately IS linear, but provides multiple paths and opportunities for exploration until you get what you need to access areas you previously couldn't. Many times upgrades in some games act as nothing more than a key anyway, so I don't think there's much of a difference.
@aznable Yeah Dark Souls is a good example, or Metroid Prime, classic Resident Evil. There's lots really. But not many from indie developers that I know of anyway.
Looks cool imo. But why doesn't anyone take a stab at making a 3D Metroidvania? They don't HAVE to be 2D sidescrollers. The concept could apply to many things honestly. And it was more of a rhetorical question really. I know 2D sidescrollers are easier to pull off for small teams with limited budgets. But I think that's why we're flooded with them and why people groan when they hear the term.
I'll check out the demo, but I'm not super hyped tbh. Persona 5 was a huge let down for me compared to the rest of the series, and musou games are only fun for so long imo. Holding out hope we'll see more on SMT V soon, I'm ready to move on from P5.
Wonderful 101 without a doubt. One of my all time favorites and I would love to ditch the annoying Gamepad functionality it had. Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Xenoblade X, and the Zeldas would all be welcome too. I'd even be down for Star Fox Zero as I actually liked that game. But Wonderful 101 deserves it imo and has the most to gain from a port.
My biggest issue with this series is the awful designs of the animatronics. They're trying way too hard to look scary, it's laughable. Not a bit of subtlety to them at all. Reminds me of the Annabelle doll from The Conjuring and its own movies. But I think good horror comes from a well established atmosphere, mood, or theme. And monster designs should be used to heighten the effectiveness of that atmosphere, mood, or theme. But I don't see that in this series.
@PorllM My point is more that this isn't something to be taken seriously and Nintendo Life is just adding fuel to the fire. Something they've done numerous times regarding these games. This was the most recent article to tie into all that, so that's why I'm saying it here.
Not sure where you get off continuously mocking those who are upset with the game. This is obviously a joke and even if it isn't, it has less than 200 signatures.
The games do have issues and the devs have been shady about it. If you still want to play and enjoy the games, most people agree that's perfectly fine. But stop acting like they're without faults, or that people shouldn't be upset.
Also, there are no more people who don't want the games bashing those who do than there are "defenders" bashing the "haters". I've seen plenty on both sides and they all look equally idiotic.
@NintendoByNature They're top down action games in which you clear rooms of enemies with a large variety of weapons and abilities. Typically the enemies die in one hit, as do you. Very violent and wrapped up in a dark story with a killer soundtrack. They're not actually all that similar to GTA, Retro City Rampage, or Shakedown Hawaii, aside from aethestic.
Hate to be a stickler for technicalities, but Monolith Soft is a first party Nintendo studio, not second party. Saw a few people getting that wrong in the comments.
Anyway, BOTW had an amazing open world imo. Can't wait to see what they do next. And yeah like others have said, I hope they flesh out the story more this time around and give us more unique and plentiful dungeons.
Everyone saying these games haven't aged well are crazy imo. Yeah sure maybe if you're playing the actual N64 originals. But these are the remastered versions from Steam a few years ago, and later ported to Xbox one. They do a lot to improve the controls and make navigating the stages easier. They're a blast to play, especially the 2nd one.
@Ludovsky Sorry, I meant stinginess when it comes to Smash Bros in particular. I worded that poorly. I know Dragon Quest has a strong history with Nintendo. Though much of that history is from when DQ was owned by just Enix, before their merger with Square. But you're right in that the series has had much more traction on Nintendo platforms in recent years, but I still feel like this would be a very odd choice. Especially when Joker from P5 kinda shows that series relevancy on Nintendo platforms isn't the biggest deciding factor at play here. I think overall character relevancy and business politics make more sense. But idk for sure, I'm interested to see who comes next either way.
This seems very unlikely. I love Dragon Quest but its main characters are never very memorable or iconic, especially Erdrick in the west. And I fully expect each dlc fighter to be characters that are popular in the west considering they announced Joker at the Game Awards. The protag of 8 or 11 would make more sense and even those I would doubt. Not to mention Square Enix's stinginess and hesitation when it comes to sharing their properties with Nintendo. If it were to be a character from them, it'd likely be someone like Sora or 2B, if anyone at all.
The game hasn't been shown in its entirety. Not even close. We still know next to nothing about what game modes will be available. There's still a lot they could show us.
