As had been previously promised, a demo for the upcoming Persona 5 Scramble has now been released for Nintendo Switch. If you want to give the game a go before its full launch, here's your chance.
You can access the demo by logging onto the Switch eShop with a Japanese account (if you don't already have one, it's not too complicated to set one up). Once you're logged in, go down to the third tab on the left-hand side (below the one called 'New'), and you'll see the Persona 5 Scramble page listed.
Once you've clicked that, choose the bottom option on the right-hand side (the smaller of the two boxes) and you'll be able to download the demo. Then you can choose to play it just as you would with any other game on your console, as long as you don't mind playing in Japanese.
The demo was first announced last month alongside a new - and very flashy - trailer. The game is scheduled to launch on 20th February in Japan, although no western release has been confirmed just yet.
Are you hoping to hear of a western release date soon? Will you be trying out this demo? Let us know in the usual place.
generic port begging comment here
I'm sure this'll be a fun Persona game. Though I'm still kinda bitter the main game won't be coming to the Switch even though I already played it on PS4.
A warriors-style game where I can't understand the objectives? Hmmm no thanks
Oh great... I just want to run around see how the performance is on Switch.
Would love P6 on Switch also. P4Golden on VITA was fantastic. It be great if it went handheld in the future again.
EDIT: Thanks NL for how to navigate the menu!. Downloading now!
Give me Persona 5 or gtfo.
@mesome713 Get a PS4 then. People need to just accept the fact that Persona 5 isn’t coming to the Switch.
So, I'm not a fan of Dynasty Warriors' gameplay. I have Hyrule Warriors and I finished the story, but I just couldn't bring myself back to it due to how repetitive it is.
But after watching some Persona 5: Scramble, I might save up and check it out. I loved Persona 5 on the PS3, and while the gameplay doesn't look all that fun to me at first glance, the style and soundtrack is just as fantastic as ever.
Anyone know how long the demo is?
@Nerdfather1 I'll wait, I'm not buying a PS4 for just a couple games. Either it comes to PC, Apple, or Nintendo...or they don't get my monies.
Pretty underwhelmed by what I saw with this game. I am sure big Persona fans will love it but I never really cared for these 3D beat-em-ups where you just fight droves of the same copy and paste enemies all the time.
@Seananigans It’s not ignorant. The mainline Persona games have always been on PlayStation. If someone wants to play P5 so badly, to the point where they refuse or don’t want to support the company in their other games coming to Switch, then purchase a PS4 to play the game (or a PS3). People need to accept the fact that P5 more than likely isn’t coming to the Switch. Accept it and move on.
@mesome713 buy a used ps3 or play it on ps4. If not emulate it and shut up already
@Seananigans yeah but when people constantly complain when ot obviously wont happen ot becomes annoying. If you really cared about playing persona before jokers inclusion of smash you would've bought a ps4, ps3 pr emulated it by now. So stop complaining to us
@mesome713 just emulate it if you have a pc
And you have demand for ports of most games in the BioShock, DarkSouls, Tales, Devil may Cry, Resident Evil, SaintRow, GRID, AC series of games
So TONS of games on PS4 they want to play on top of Persona5 that easily justify the investment into that "ecosystem"
I would love Persona went multiplatform. I daydream of P6 on a handheld (just like BAYO4 on PC) but I accepted that I needed a PS4 to play P5 back in 2017 (and a Switch for BAYO3 in 2020)
@Averagewriter or theres always emulation. Lol Persona is a Sony franchise for the most part? Just like of a sony fan wanted to play mario they would have to buy a Nintendo console. Your logic doesnt work. What if I had a ps4 and no switch? Then would I demand for mario to come to ps4? No! Mainline persona has always been a sony exclusive. So if you really did care you would've bought Sony consoles or emulated them. I dont get why nintendo fans hate Sony and just dont want to support anything sony. I've been a Nintendo fan all my life and when o got a ps3 I was pleasantly surprised how similar some of its exclusives were to Nintendo games and how Nintendo fans could enjoy sony games and vice versa
Created a Japanese account just so I could download the demo. Quite excited to try it out.
@Nerdfather1 Sega/Atlus can continue enjoying their underperforming Persona sales then(check the recent news) lol
@Ralizah To be honest, might do the same.
@Itachi2099 Underperforming? Sure, Persona isn't the most popular series of all time, but underperforming? Where did you get that from?
Persona 5 isn't happening guys. If they didn't announce it with Royal, and if they didn't announce it when Scramble was announced, it's not happening. Except for spin offs, Persona has been a PlayStation franchise.
@Seananigans That’s not my problem, though. And you certainly can’t blame me, as if it’s my fault, that Atlus won’t bring P5 to the Switch. I have no control over that. If you want to try and make that possible, purchase P5 Scramble on the Switch and show Atlus how much you are willing to support them. Maybe they will consider it. They definitely won’t consider porting P5 if people will refuse to play/purchase the game.
@PickledKong64 I'm not a theft, sorry.
@PickledKong64 I understand the point you're going for, but Persona is a bit of an oddity in the console-exclusive world, as is Atlus as a whole. Mario is a first-party series by Nintendo, while Persona is a third-party series made by Atlus, a company that frequently makes games for both Sony and Nintendo. Joker and Persona characters have made several appearances in Nintendo games (namely Smash Bros, Persona Labyrinth, this new Scramble game, and with some cameo costumes in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE).
Conversely, the SMT franchise (of which Persona is a spin-off) now appears to be Nintendo-exclusive, with SMT IV, Apocalypse, and the Devil Survivor series, and the upcoming SMT V announced as being for Switch.
I guess this is a long way of saying that even though P5 is a Sony exclusive, it doesn't fall into the same category as some other exclusives. I never expect God of War to come to Nintendo. I never expect Mario to make his way over to Sony. But I don't think P5 is an impossibility, nor do I think seeing SMT on a Sony console is an impossibility.
All that said, I agree that it's unlikely. Releasing the game on Switch would require a lot of negotiation between Nintendo, Sony, and Atlus, and I don't really see it happening if it hasn't already.
Well there looks to be a lot more to it than just Dynasty Warriors combat, that is there and was a lot of fun but afterwards I was exploring the town in the same way as I did in Persona 5.
Very excited for this now
I made a japanese account just to try this demo.
there will be no western release announcement until Persona 5 Royal is out so at the earliest is April
@Agramonte what makes you think Persona 6 will be on Switch when every other Persona game is PlayStation exclusive?
@PerishSong Prior SMT games were on PlayStation consoles before, so the possibility is definitely there.
I know I'm going to get downvoted, but damn the port begging of this game needs to cease. It's apparent Atlus isn't developing the mainline Persona games for Switch for some unknown reason. For the time being, we just have to accept that it won't come to Switch. Or we can hope one day that it will in the future. At least we're getting SMTV. The original game that Persona stems from.
Welp, it’s also ignorant to say “I stick to system X, so bring that game to this system, cause I’m not willing to change/get another one”, sorry. It’s like complaining that Mario is only on Switch, but it should come to PS4, because of Sony-environment-preference. :/
@Lando_ Sony doesn't own Persona. I played Persona on 3DS, and Joker is all over Switch akready. So Sony can just cry us a river.
But anyways, has anybody tried the demo yet? I’ll download when I get home, then play whenever I get a free minute. Curious to see how “Musou” it is. Looks to have the same combat, but with more exploration (based on map shapes from trailer) feel than 45-min mission failure.
@benj2687 about an hour
@Itsacardgame I've had a go and if anything it feels a lot like playing Persona 5, the battle system is Musuo inspired but the couple I've had have been very short in comparison to those games and inbetween I've been exploring exactly as I would in P5
Maybe, Sony owns the mainline Persona games, but allows spin offs like Persona Q and Scramble on other systems. :/ I don’t know, honestly. I like ‘em both: Sony and Nintendo. And Microsoft. Even though the Xbox One hadn’t much in store for my gaming taste this gen, unfortunately.
I feel like this game will sell better than Persona 5 Royal.
@mesome713 It may not "own" Persona, but it does likely have an exclusivity deal with Atlus.
@KBuckley27 None... just wishful thinking there would be a handheld version again.
But I am glad Legend of Cold Steel is coming back to handheld on Switch. I get my jRPG on the GO wins where I can.
While I’m not going to play the demo, this means I can finally listen to the god like remixes
@carlos82 thanks! I’m certainly looking forward to playing this (at least demoing it, but who am I kidding, I’ll be getting it). It sounds like it could be a good change the the typical Musou game.
@mesome713 My first playhtrough was on the PS4, the second one in a PS3 emulator on my PC (at locked 30fps, better performance than on the PS3 itself)
You could follow the latter route, it's not ideal but better than nothing (because I don't see the main Persona series leave PlayStation platform anytime soon)
People in this comment section talking about a port are so ignorant
1st SONY does not own persona, Persona 6 could be on switch as SONY has not payed for any ads for it, even more exciting is the idea of the spinoff coming to NINTENDO and the original series being shin megami tensei coming to PlayStation
2nd Sorry people a port will never happen SONY has said that they would prefer for a port to not happen as they payed for almost all the ads for the game and atlus is sticking by SONY
To say that you are going to do things like give this game a bad rating is so wrong I have like no money and I still bought a PlayStation just for like 2 games
@Itsacardgame to be honest the more I play, the less I'd actually call this a Musuo game at all. If anything it seems to be an action RPG where short Musuo style battles replace traditional JRPG ones and inbetween you explore as you would in any JRPG
@mesome713 Cry Us A River In The Desert?
@Bdawg1226 I'll state why I give the game a zero in my review. I'll tell them they get a zero for bringing spin off junk instead of making an official statement on why no mainline but flooded us with Joker content.
@mesome713 if you read my comment you would see why there is no main line game coming to switch
They don’t have to make any sort of statement announcing it. Persona started out as a shin megami tensei spinoff fro PlayStation Nintendo console owners get the mainline smt games while PlayStation owners get Persona SONY pays for almost ALL the ads for persona it would be unfair to them as a company if atlus and sega just decided randomly to make it a multi platform game
To put it more simply it’s like if Sony wanted Pokemon Gamefreak is not owned by Nintendo but Nintendo pays for all the ads it would be unfair if they just randomly decided to make Pokemon multi platform
The mainline SMT games are not Nintendo exclusive either! Nowhere does it say Persona is Sony exclusive. Remember RE4? It's only on GameCube so if you want to buy it you can play it on literally anything.
@Bdawg1226 well they better make a statement cause I'm review bombing them to make my voice heard.
Having played the demo (can't read Japanese so I just skipped the dialogue) from what I've seen this game is a full on sequel to Persona 5.
There's lots of big spoilers for the events of the original game in the demo alone.
You got a source for this information, or is it all just speculation? Whenever I see people claim mainline Persona is Sony exclusive it's always just people speculating there's an exclusivity deal without any actual proof to back it up.
@mesome713 And bro, Pokémon is owned by Nintendo. Nintendo is the majority and controlling owner.
@mesome713 LMAO GAMEFREAK IS NOT OWNED BY NINTENDO and I’m pretty sure Pokemon isn’t either
Downloaded the demo as soon as I noticed it was online.
It's definitely a sequel to Persona 5. I was a little worried about how much they had changed the gameplay during the game, but I was surprised how much it stayed true to their roots. The story is as fun as ever, and it's going to be interesting to see more of the overworld social interactions in the full game. It showed a minimum of that doing the demo, but it presented the beginning of the game after all which is how the first game was as well.
Now, they DO say that the game is musou style in its battle style. While it's apparent when you look the enemies' animations, they could have fooled me if they hadn't mentioned it. While the first game is turn based, everything else is implemented in the gameplay like Persona summoning, the way you shoot, all out attacks etc. and makes it its own. The battles are also relatively fast and makes it more like its predecessor. Maybe it's just me but the way the battles work reminds me a bit like games like Bayonetta, and I don't mind that at all! All in all, while I think the Persona games have some of the best turn based systems, these real time battles is EXACTLY what I wished Persona 5 was to begin with... I just wish that the western release wasn't so far away.
One downside though is maybe only on the switch version: the load times! It's frustrating to wait for so long in a game like this! I can see through it, but could definitely be something to improve if possible.
All in all, if this is the closest we get to Persona 5, I don't mind at all. From what they have shown until now, it looks really promising
@Bdawg1226 I didn't say Nintendo owned gamefreak, they own and control Pokemon. Nintendo owns the majority of Pokemon.
@GameOtaku I mean they kind of are now 4 is only on 3ds and the only news we have gotten on 5 is showing that it is going to only be on switch as for persona yes it is not a Sony exclusive but it has only been on PlayStation for its entire life span so ye chances are it won’t leave PlayStation as Sony has paid for like all the ads
@mesome713 no they do not look it up online there a bunch of articles talking about how they don’t own almost any of it only like 33%
@Bdawg1226 Final Fantasy was Nintendo exclusive until it wasn't. And then it was Sony exclusive until it wasn't.
There is a precedent for this sort of thing in gaming. Not saying it's likely, but never say never.
@danemord so hard to read though even with a online translator
@Zeraki I’m not saying that persona never will come to Nintendo I’m just saying 5 will not
@GameOtaku I never said it was exclusive. I just said the mainline Persona games have always been on PlayStation and nothing else. I’m not speaking about spinoffs.
@Nerdfather1 you do realize persona is a spinoff of shin megami tensei right?
@Seananigans I’m chill. You must be taking my comments in the wrong way. Don’t get me wrong, man, I’d love P5 to be on the Switch. It’d be a great addition to its already fantastic library. That said, it’s just not going to happen, regardless of the demand. Therefore, if someone wants to play the game that badly they should consider buying another console to do so. Yes, it may be inconvenient, and yes, it may not be in peoples budget, and if that’s the case I’m sorry — it’s the only way people will get to play the game.
@Bdawg1226 Yes. But they aren’t like Persona Q or Arena or dancing games.
@Nerdfather1 ok few man I actually thought I was running into my worst nightmare but yes people are actually delusional I agree with you persona more specifically p5 while not being owned by Sony is not gonna come to switch Sony has put to much money into the series
@danemord Man, I think you're in the wrong thread. We're not talking about the demo, we are just endlessly whining because we are children.
Paid for the ads? Yeah right, Nintendo is too with Joker being in Smash, costumes in Tokyo Mirage. Also it doesn't change the fact SMT3 was on Sony PS2.
@GameOtaku yes you obviously didn’t read I said from 4 onwards but Sony paid for all the ads around the release date of the game you saying that stuff about how Nintendo with smash is just straight ignorant joker was announced OVER a year after the game came out in japan
@nimnio lmao so true idk why I even comment it just makes me look like a child we should all just enjoy having scramble on switch
@Bdawg1226 Nintendo owns 33%, and Creatures owns 33%, but Nintendo owns a percent of Creatures also. They own majority and theirfore own the ip, rights, and full control.
@Bdawg1226 I personally do believe it'll eventually get ported, but if it doesn't oh well.
I'm more than happy to settle for Scramble in the meantime.
@mesome713 idk about full control but yes they do own part for that I apologize
@Zeraki Fr idk why people can’t just be happy with what we have scramble looks fun idk if I can play the demo I tried but google translate is annoying
Royal was just released end of last year in Japan, Joker was announced for smash shortly after its release. Saying Sony paid for the ads is ignorant. You've no proof to back it up! If Persona was truly exclusive they wouldn't allow Joker to leave the console or his likenesses or the sequel to be released on anything other than their own platform.
@Bdawg1226 I just skipped the dialogue and went right for the gameplay. So far so good, it's at 30fps so it looks a bit choppy and there's no anti-aliasing so there's tons of shimmering, but I'm mostly going to be playing handheld anyway so the shimmering won't bother me much.
My main concern right now is that we still don't have a Western release date.
True.... But then again, you just need to know what "senpaaaai~" means, and you'll know the plot by heart
.... Nevermind, wrong game. Play the English version when it comes
@danemord what I’m planning on in my eyes if you can read it more power to you and I hope you have a good time with the demo
@GameOtaku oh my I’m taking about the base game not royal AND HOLY DO YOU NOT READ I SAID PERSONA IS NOT A SKNY EXCLUSIVE I said Sony pays for ALMOST all the ads and that thinking that atlus should port it is wrong as that would be a backstab towards all the hard work Sony has put into advertising the game since it came out in 2016
@NinjaWaddleDee Like all the other playstation franchises right
@Zeraki I mean we usually don’t for a bit maybe e3? Or a direct
It wouldn't be backstabbing. It's a business! They exist to make money! A switch port considering the demand would be great for Atlus. Sony is not being left out maybe SMT 5 will be multiplat after its timed exclusivity to switch is up.
@danemord good on you
@GameOtaku dude first it would be backstabbing the Japanese don’t do that type of to eachother secondly I think you are mistaking me I’m saying p5 will not get a port as for persona 6 only time will tell having it on switch would be fantastic as I would have no main reason to by a ps5 and honestly I like the timed exclusive idea for third parties who work with first part companies like ff7 remake for example, it would be fantastic
Edit: would prefer not to argue anymore I can see that we agree on most things honestly don’t know why I’m arguing with you I was mainly upset with another idiot in this thread
Play the demo like I did if you are a real Persona fan, this is ::clears throat:: Golden! This oozes quality and just shows that P5 can def be on the Switch. Just probably won't happen anytime soon or ever 🤷♂️
@Bdawg1226 Oh absolutely... using google translate or other translation devices for such a game would be torture
@danemord so you can read Japanese... nice that’s pretty awesome (I really hope I didn’t just assume that if so my bad)
Bdawg's right, the supreme virtue in Japanese culture is loyalty. Loyalty to the state is why Japan has a 99.98% criminal conviction rate and even if you're acquitted or released because of exculpatory information they continue to try to prove that you're the culprit because to do otherwise would mean admitting that the state is wrong. Loyalty is why samurai would commit suicide after the death of their feudal lord.
Atlus and Sony have done very well by each other and have a relationship in Persona that spans nearly a quarter-century. Sony's PS4 has an install base of 106 million consoles and I see nothing to suggest that PS5 won't enjoy similar success. Even if we assume that Atlus and Sony have no formal exclusivity deal, which I consider unlikely, Atlus is not willing to cross a business relationship of that duration and magnitude to sell an aging game on a platform with half the install base. The last time Sony was crossed in that fashion, coincidentally by Nintendo, they introduced the PlayStation and decimated Nintendo's market share and third party support.
Yes, Atlus might, and probably would, do very well on Switch, but they can't afford to make an enemy of Sony. If they manage to garner strong sales on Switch with P5S, that gives them leverage to go to Sony and argue for a timed exclusive for Persona 6, but that's as far they're willing to go at this point.
@JohnGrey my man Atlus makes games for Nintendo already it’s not the case of an exclusivity agreement it’s the case of Sony having almost all the games on PlayStation and paying for the ads and preferring for it not to happen they have legit said those exact words “we would PREFER to not lose persona” atlus could easily go to Nintendo, they make games for Nintendo they just won’t stab Sony in the back.
@Bdawg1226 Obviously, I mean exclusivity for the P5 game alone, as that's the one that being constantly port-begged. I'm well aware that they make games for the Switch, and did so for the 3DS. That's why I said that they wouldn't cross Sony to 'sell an aging game on a platform with half the install base'.
@JohnGrey ok I’m not even gonna try and argue to tired for that I’ll just agree
@JohnGrey Looks to me like releasing Personal 5 Scramble and joker all over Nintendo Switch is a f you Sony, yall don't pay very well. I'd call that a stab in the face, with a stab to the heart coming soon.
@benj2687 roughly 2hrs
@mesome713 lmao not at all Sony doesn’t care about newer they haven’t payed for ads as far as I know and definitely not to the extent of the original p5 release on top of that Sony has been very consumer friendly and are trying to work with Microsoft and Nintendo that’s why we had the whole thing at game awards 2018
I would argue that it's not a slight against Sony at all. As has been observed, Sony doesn't own the Persona IP, it likely just has exclusivity for the existing Persona games. So, Atlus is free to license the characters for whatever purpose. Let us concoct a purely hypothetical scenario.
Atlus knows that there is some Persona appeal on the Nintendo platforms, just based on Persona Q and Q2, the latter of which has already featured Joker and the other members of the P5 cast. Atlus also knows that it can't outright port mainline Persona to Switch without angering Sony, especially when Sony stands to profit nothing and lose a major platform exclusive should it appear on Switch. They have to have someone to gauge IP interest on the platform in something other than a weird dungeon crawler. What do you do? Make a Persona game that is just different enough (action combat instead of TBS) and release it on the Switch. If it flops, you don't bother to bring the series to Switch; if it succeeds, you have leverage to tell Sony that there's a rapidly growing install base that provides an alternative revenue stream, so it's in Sony's best interest to negotiate a timed exclusive arrangement in exchange for a cut of the Switch profits.
Obviously, there's a load of supposition on my part, but it makes sense to me from a business perspective.
@KBuckley27 I mean, what makes him thing p6 is coming out this decade?
Thanks much for the detailed instructions! It was a major help!
@JustPeachy this was the wholesomeness I was hoping to find in the comments
Playing some of it, it is definitely musou
Nothing wrong with wanting to play P5R on the Switch. P3 and P4 got enhanced portable versions, and since Sony abandoned the Vita and the portable market, why shouldn't the Switch P5R?? It's been said before, but what's frustrating about Atlus not porting P5 is that Sony doesn't have any stake in the Persona series, as evidenced by the spinoffs appearing on Nintendo hardware.
Sony has already made back any money they spent on ads to promote a game on their system. It's not like there going to lose their fanbase over a port of persona going to switch. You see in this world money talks, that's capitalism! I could give you $500 and you'd probably agree with everything I say. Just like how Atlus stands to profit more from having 5 ported to switch. The work on the game is already done! It's not like it'd take long to port it. Right now the way I see it Nintendo is advertising a game they don't have access to with him being in smash and costumes in TMS. 5S on switch makes no sense without the original as well.
I don't see why anyone would be upset to see this game on other platforms.
@GameOtaku look like I said I think we agree on most things man I could go on and on about how $500 wouldn’t change my personal view points it $1 million dollars wouldn’t none of that matters man there such bigger things in this world man o don’t know why we argue about such small
@Bdawg1226 could you please try to tone it down with the profanity? You've triggered our automatic alerts quite a few times today.
I'm sorry man but it really is a matter of fact businesses are simply out for the money. They would do anything for the sake of profit. Atlus has no excuse for trolling the Nintendo fans with P5 tie ins and not expect us to demand a port. Especially since that's all they care about. Outside of one tease trailer 3 years ago nothing has been said about SMT 5! Just look at their Facebook group! All P5 all the time! Sega wonders why they are taking a hit financially? Look no further! They have a tremendous back catalogue they can port with minimal effort! SMT 1 and 2 officially translated? Persona collection? Persona 4 Legacy collection?
I'll check out the demo, but I'm not super hyped tbh. Persona 5 was a huge let down for me compared to the rest of the series, and musou games are only fun for so long imo.
Holding out hope we'll see more on SMT V soon, I'm ready to move on from P5.
Didn't realise the game had yet to announce a worldwide release date, but I just did a bit of quick research and found that P5 also had a lengthy delay between it's Japanese and Worldwide release date, so maybe it'll come out near the end of the year? Either way, I'll probably pass unless it turns out to be some godlike anime game like P5 apparently was.
@mesome713 what's a theft?
I got the chance to check out the Switch demo, and honestly, I'm highly looking forward to it. The game runs beautifully, and the gameplay is more enjoyable than I was expecting. It's very smooth and stylish, along with it being a bit different than I was expecting. I skipped all the cutscenes, since I can't read Japanese (lmao), but the cutscenes felt like as if I was playing on the PS3. It has the same fantastic quality, and a lot of love was clearly put into the game.
The only issue is that the Switch version lacks AA, resulting in the game's pixels standing out more. But the style is still there and looks just as amazing as Persona 5.
@Averagewriter did I stutter when I said “check the news”?
Sega literally said themselves a few days ago that “Persona 5 Royal and Sakura Wars underperformed” which wouldn’t have happened if they weren’t such stubborn dunces, what are you bringing me general sales data of the whole series for?
