Update (Wed 3rd Jun, 2020 09:50 BST): The Kickstarter for SteamDolls - Order of Chaos is now live, meaning you can go ahead and pledge your support if you'd like to see the game arrive on Switch. You can visit the Kickstarter page right here, or learn more about the game in our original article below.
Original Article (Wed 6th May, 2020 12:30 BST): SteamDolls - Order of Chaos is a new, upcoming Metroidvania hoping to launch on Nintendo Switch. Resist the urge to litter our comment section with 'urgh, another Metroidvania', though, because this one is already showing quite a lot of promise.
Described as a steampunk-inspired Metroidvania game with "a grimy touch of brutality", this one has you losing yourself inside a labyrinthine city full of secrets and madness, aiming to reveal the truth lurking in the shadows. A description for the game says, "you know but four words: Action, Exploration, Stealth, and Blood". Ooer.
Perhaps one of the biggest selling points at this early stage is the fact that David Hayter (voice of Metal Gear's Solid Snake) plays the game's protagonist, known as The Whisper. You've watched the trailer up above by now, right?
A Kickstarter campaign will be going live in June - you can actually see the page already here - with a full release for the game planned for 2021 on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and of course Switch.
Will you be keeping an eye on this one? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

I’m not a David Hayter, I’m a David Lovyer
Dishonoured + Blasphemous = SteamDolls
Does look pretty cool though. I'll keep an eye out for it if it ever escapes Kickstarter and becomes an actual thing.
Looks cool imo. But why doesn't anyone take a stab at making a 3D Metroidvania? They don't HAVE to be 2D sidescrollers. The concept could apply to many things honestly. And it was more of a rhetorical question really. I know 2D sidescrollers are easier to pull off for small teams with limited budgets. But I think that's why we're flooded with them and why people groan when they hear the term.
David is such a cool guy. Pro tip: you can pay the man 60 bucks to make him record a video as Snake for you or your friends.
@UncleJungle The best 3d metroidvania is Dark Souls (og)
It's a cyberpunk Blasphemous! It looks pretty good hehe
@aznable Metroid Prime, man!
@the_beaver I love Metroid prime, but Dark Souls’ progression felt more real and less video-game-y. No obvious “Hey this blue door requires you to have a blue key/weapon to open it,” more along the lines of “This gate is locked... htf am I supposed to get it open? Oh those giants just pulled these huge af chains once they heard the two bells ring OK. I’m off to find what adven- F@CK I’m dead. Snake people.”
@aznable Yeah Dark Souls is a good example, or Metroid Prime, classic Resident Evil. There's lots really. But not many from indie developers that I know of anyway.
@aznable But that's not like the classic metroidvania lol, in those games you always figured out what you needed to go that way. Dark Souls is simply a very hard game in general haha
Okay, color me interested.
@UncleJungle They have. You just need a PS4, Xbox One or PC to play most of them.
Fun fact: David Hayter was the voice actor of Zengetsu in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
@UncleJungle they just work better when they're 2D. But I get what you're saying. There's an overflow of 2D metroidvanias.
Because they said he is voice by the guy from metal gear i can't stop looking at this character as gray fox with his own plot
@PickledKong64 WHAT?? We haven't played the same game lol
Steam? Steam! Steeeeeeeeeaaaaammmm!
Looks lovely; love me some retro futurist cyberpunk aesthetics and David Hayter VO! 🦇🖤
A metroidvania? Huh. Colonel, wasn't metroidvanias out of fashion? I'm voice acting in it? Wasn't Metal Gear turned into a pachinko machine? Huh.
Yay more Metroidvania goodness.
@aznable metroids and Castlevania are the best 3d metroidvanias.
David Hayter is my main dude. Cool he’s doing another Metroidvania (ahem, Bloodstained.) I wasn’t aware of this game it I will keep my eye on it. I seriously love Metroidvanias and can’t ever have too many (as long as they’re good.)
I so wish he would be able to reprise his role of snake.. he was PERFECT for that.
@UncleJungle It would be really expensive for a small studio. The only one coming to mind right now is Moon Chronicles and that company only does 2D games now.
Still funny to me, seeing David so young and boyish in Guyver 2.
@UncleJungle
Because almost no one can get the formula down for a great metroidvania. There's been a lot of attempts but so far only Hollow Knight had truly succeeded.
Not sold on the game from the trailer. Way too much focus on laughable edge, not enough on what the game hopes to do well. I'll keep an eye out, but hope they don't think that's the game's biggest appeal.
@UncleJungle There was some Indie FPS that attempted it, can't remember the title. That said, Dark Souls and Resident Evil aren't Metroidvanias. Progression in those games is based on event/item progression, not ability/upgrade progression.
@SomeBitTripFan I don't personally agree that progression has to be based on abilities and upgrades. There's no set definition when it comes to that. I'd agrue a Metroidvania is defined by its guided non-linearity. In that the game ultimately IS linear, but provides multiple paths and opportunities for exploration until you get what you need to access areas you previously couldn't. Many times upgrades in some games act as nothing more than a key anyway, so I don't think there's much of a difference.
@UncleJungle I disagree, in that I've repeatedly seen definitions you upgrade/ability based progression be the defining characteristic for Metroidvania games. It's good that you recognize the similarity and there's a valuable discussion in recognizing that breed of progression, but I'm of the opinion that the definition gets far too wide when used that broadly. The progression/empowerment from some abilities, even if they're small upgrades or don't act as much more than a key for progression context is still an important part of the games. Seems like you're analyzing games in a bit of a vacuum from other discussions and it's given you some different, interesting takes. I'd say keep that up, but I'd also prefer to keep a genre more limited in definition (and the one I've seemed to see settling) and let that progression type exist independently of a genre label.
@Dirty0814 The only 3D castlevania games that fit the “metroidvania” description are Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness... I played the hell out of both, and love them both, but they aren’t particularly good. If not for a map, you would be all kinds of lost. There are almost no landmarks by which to orient yourself.
I just played the vid. Thought this was coming out soon. Sad. Looks great. Day one, I'm thinking.
Looks nice but isn't there like a zillion 2d metroidvanias out there?
Artworks remember me Darkest Dungeon. Pretty cool
Love some Castlevania, love David's work
This is looking promising.
I think he did great as Zangetsu on Bloodstained, even if it was just more Solid Snake'ing 😂
To all the people saying there are not many 3d metroidvanias. God of war and Control are two great games by a bigger and indie studio respectively. There are plenty of you include souls likes which I personally do, they aren't hard, they're just not so easy you can play them with your eyes closed like most games these days. I highly recommend Control for anyone who hasn't played that though
Looks interesting.
I'm a bit cautious with Kickstarter campaigns for games unless it's a remake or rerelease but I hope it succeeds. It's already half way funded. Personally I will wait for reviews since controls are so important with these types of game.
@VR32X you and me surely make up at least 20% who've seen this film. It's not great but certainly better than the Mark Hamill one ☺️
With a Physical Switch copy, I'm backing that's for sure.
Was about to back and then I remembered how bloodstained ended up on switch... think I’ll wait for the final product and a sale...
@UncleJungle Metroidvanias are just action platformers with backtracking, all 3D platformers have this lol. Not sure why it is being pushed so much as a genre lol.
I get how people seem sick of all the Metroidvanias. The fact that people want to make them shows that many people love them. I love them too, when executed a certain way. But they're also tougher for me to jump into than regular 2D action games. No one complains about too many level-based platformers and action games. That's because they're regular. But Metroidvania feels overdone because it's a specific twist on the 2D action games, and it's a twist many people have to be in a specific frame of mind to play. And I get that part of the popularity among developers is because it probably makes it easier to stretch the game out without it feeling drawn out. For example, something intense like Castlevania 3 on NES would probably feel exhausting if it was longer. With all that said, developers should make the games they want and anyone sick of this style of game can find plenty of other things to play.
This does look pretty nice so far. I find game trailers annoying though. They try to be too much like movie trailers(and I prefer trailers in the style of the '80s and earlier). As with most game trailers, I wanted to see more gameplay footage. But what I did see looked good.
I think the world would simply become unravelled into a mass spaghettiforcation before ultimately being dragged into a testosterone fuelled black hole, if David Hayter teamed up with Logan Cunningham (the excellent gravel voiced, film noir type narrator from Transistor and Bastion) on a project.
David Hayter's an absolute living legend! No doubt about it. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more from both of them! Anyone unfamiliar with Logan Cunninghams voice over work, seriously, give him a listen! He's very good.
I don't support kickstarters. But, I'll buy them if they interest me. One annoying trend I have noticed, is that they have a bad habit of screwing over and snubbing Nintendo players more then others in some fashion or another.
