@Goginho , True. And as @theberrage just said ^ if they had great games that everybody wanted to play then ppl will buy a Nintendo. So either make a console that developers want to develop for, or be your own developer and hit home runs. I'm not convinced that Nintendo has the ability, money, or willingness to risk their entire business to engage in a massive push to develop 10 wicked games for a console that the public perception is already established on: "an underpowered last-gen failure".
@rjejr , Probably not, but as to "family friendly U"... Nintendo said they were going for a complete home AV entertainment system. I'm just not seeing the commitment from Nintendo to capture that share of the market.
Wii U was supposed to recapture a piece of the "mature gamer" audience with a next-gen HD console. BUT THE U IS GROSSLY UNDERPOWERED, and everybody knows it. If the U were comparably powered to the other next gens, and was not so difficult to port to, then Nintendo would have a chance. This is elementary. N has the "family/kid" position, but where's the crossover to the casual parent who wants to shoot Muslims or hookers (or whatever violent games they want)? N failed to cross into that mature zone, and until they can compete on the same grounds as Sony/MS they will suffer. Time for a new console, mega high powered, easy to develop for (port to, etc), build around developer needs, and maintain all the familiar Nintendo Wii features. Then a cross-over may begin to happen. Until then you're just an also-ran console for kids.
Time for new CEO. Nintendo has been far too complacent since the original Wii. They sat on their thumbs and counted the money rolling in from the Wii. Many years too late to the HD party. Innovate or die.
EDIT: Castle Clash (Supercell) advertises more than Nintendo. And they make more profit than Nintendo too. That's all you need to know that N is stuck in their "comfortable rut" and not innovating in gaming.
@erv Because it proves that the Wii U is "dead man walking". The only new good games for it will have to come from Nintendo themselves. Anything else new and cool by 3rdP won't arrive. The sad fact is that Nintendo royally messed up with this console. Hopefully they are working furiously on the next console now... and if not, then they may become like Sega and stop making consoles.
TVii is weak anyways. Could have been good if they had done it right, but alas they didn't. i tried to follow along with sporting events on the gamepad but it was too pitifully slow to keep up with the game — always several minutes behind on game scores and plays etc.
And remind me again why they didn't make the U function as a DVR (with obvious external storage device required)?
@taffy As a complete media device the Wii U is pathetic. In every case I can grab my Android HTC One and find what I want faster than I could do the same on the U. I want to see game scores: 5 minutes to open the TVii vs "Hey Google, whats the score on XYZ game?" with an answer in 1 second. Same for anything on Youtube (trailers etc). Same for TV schedule, or anything else I can think of. The console simply doesn't perform as well as it could. The still maintain that the gamepad concept is strong, but their execution was severely lacking. Too bad, because I do like Nintendo a lot.
Fascinating. All I can say is, "See, I told you so." Nintendo wasted a good 3-4 years just milking the old Wii sales and clearly didn't invest the time and energy into the next console as they should have been. Nobody to blame but themselves.
I haven't played Castlevania since 1988 on NES and couldn't care less about the series since then. And you can't blame Konami for ditching the WiiU — that's all on Nintendo.
@Laxeybobby Who could have expected Christmas to show up on Dec 25?! You're asking WAY too much from them. ... I have 25 years in the tech field so I have compassion and understanding for glitches and whatnot, but this Christmas outage smells of incompetence to me. Its now two days past Christmas and as of this morning I still couldn't connect to Wii Sports Club. Nintendo needed a home-run this Christmas and they don't appear to be performing.
@Platypus101 Okay Platypus. When you called me "uninitiated" it struck a cord. I'm a big long-time N fan, but I won't shy away from calling them out on mistakes and flaws when I see them. I like the U, but it could and should be better. Nintendo's network crashed for 3 days at Christmas when they most needed a big win (what... they didn't see Christmas coming?). The cradle just doesn't always make contact, at least mine doesn't, so the cord idea is good except that I didn't get one... whatever. ... Truce? Game on.
@Platypus101 "you remind me of the demo person on the Flip and Fold commercials (without the folding board they were a hot mess) trying to fold clothing... LOL! " Well aren't you a cheeking one...! I bought my Wii U used and it didn't come with any USB-like cord, but I'll check into it. I'll be happy with an alternative to this annoying cradle charger. But blaming the user for a lack of product knowledge is really just a way to divert blame for poor design to begin with. All those people who panned the Wii U... they are just too stupid to know what they really want, right? That elitism won't win any new customers. P.S. Guarantee I've been playing Nintendo games since the better part of you was dripping down your mother's leg.
Its 3 days 'til Christmas and NOW they bring this out. IDIOTS! And we wonder why the console is failing? smh
@Giggity55 I don't know what you're talking about. It doesn't just "plug in". The gamepad sits in a cradle to charge, which must sit "just so" or else it won't make contact and will remain dead 4 hours later.
It seems that Nintendo are the only ones who think this way. The market has rejected this console.
Remember back when it was "Nintendo: Now you're playing with power!" ... Time to go back there again. Establish new benchmarks. Or else Nintendo will become Sega.
I've 14 years in the hedge fund business and have yet to find an example of Motley Fool being anything other than just fools. They are entertainment news, nothing more.
@Spoony_Tech , <-- what he just said. That unrandomsam person sounds very clueless to me. My kid is 5 and the #1 thing on his Santa list is Link Between Worlds follow by Wind Waker HD at #2. My kid has the Zelda symphonic CD on his iPod which he listens to constantly, day and night. He hums Zelda melodies at breakfast and makes us guess which game and which area the tune is from. All of this is positive for a kid. He's 5 btw.
On smartphones: I get it that traditional Nintendo games arent setup for that platform. But they really ought to try an experiment with their IPs. I'm not saying to port over a Mario game... that would suck. Make up a new game like Clash of Clans with basic touch control using N's library of characters. They might find that its worth it for them to give it a shot. Free to play is such a cash cow right now.
Anybody else think they should also port it to the wiiU? I enjoy my 3ds but playing on a 60" plasma is nice sometimes too. I suspect it wouldn't be technically difficult to port.
@Mommar I hear ya on SS. TP was fantastic, then we waited 5 years, such anticipation, SS was getting amazing ratings... and fizzle... SS is almost as bad as MM. But two strikes out of 14 home runs still makes it the best series ever.
@Caryslan Most of what you said above is true. But there remains a segment of gamers who want the family gaming system, yet the Dad wants to goof around with a FPS once in a while. N should/could have been able to achieve that crossover, but they failed. And as for N being relegated to the family audience only: from 1985-1994 Nintendo owned all of the market, right up until they created the Playstation and gave it away to Sony (dumbest move Nintendo ever made). Point being that there is no inherent reason that N can't reclaim home console dominance if executed properly.

I don't want N to compromise on Zelda quality, but they also don't need to take 5 years between titles. And now we're supposed to wait another 2+ years for the next Zelda (making it 4+ years since SS), and they justify that in the name of "quality". FAIL.
This is exceedingly obvious. Everybody already knows this. (Except perhaps Fils-Aims.)
If you want to remove all confusion about the new console relative to the prior one, DON'T GIVE IT THE SAME NAME. Even Sony numbered them because a 3 is clearly not a 2. But what is a U? University?
"We did a test of Twilight Princess in HD. But it didn't turn into a new thing. It looked better, it looked cleaner, and it looked like a master version of the game. " Yes, so release it please. It doesn't need to become "a new thing". Just upgrade the visuals and I'll buy it all over again.
