Re: Random: Running Zelda: Breath Of The Wild With 29 Mods Is As Chaotic As You'd Expect

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Yeah, I know all about Starforce, and other annoying DRM PC stuff. I've always been able to find "no CD/DVD" cracks for ALL of my legally acquired PC games, though.

As for the whole playing media without having to decrypt: come to think of it, that might actually make Windows Media Player, and by extension Microsoft, an accessory to the fact, seeing as the player itself contains a music ripper, and it can also play the individual VOB files on a DVD or Blu-ray, and copy them, which probably shouldn't be legal, or as we already established, is at least somewhat of a grey area.

Re: Animal Crossing Fans Left Upset After Nintendo Patches Out Neat Camera Trick

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Hippie otter. Haha, good one. But yeah, completely agreed with that.

@HauntedByWater Well, that may very well the case, but the criticism that @NEStalgia has, as laid out in comment #26 will still be relevant, unless they'll patch it out. And I completely agree with him on crafting and tool durability.

No real world axe ever gives out after only having cut down a handful of trees, it's just ridiculous.

Re: Random: Running Zelda: Breath Of The Wild With 29 Mods Is As Chaotic As You'd Expect

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Well, I honestly don't know. It doesn't sound plausible. If data is encrypted, I shouldn't be able to copy it and make it run in any old video player, much less recompile it into another disc image and burn it like a normal DVD or Blu-ray.

If you mean region-locking or whatever, then that's something else entirely. Disney DVDs and even their VHS tapes back in the day actually DO have some real encryption on them, which makes it harder to copy.
I remember from back in the video tape days, that copying a Disney movie, or rather: trying to, resulted in a tape with a warped image with all kinds of rainbow-colored effects in them. Almost looked like watching an encrypted video channel without a subscription...

I also still have no idea how they even managed to do that on a video tape.

Re: Animal Crossing Fans Left Upset After Nintendo Patches Out Neat Camera Trick

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Yeah... that damn plauge...

Agreed with most of your points, though. My current loan payoff is moving at a snail's pace because of all the slower than slow resource gathering.

I've also found the island trips with Nook miles to become less and less worthwhile. It's probably only the first two flights that might add anything useful/worthwhile to your inventory, but after that, it's just more of the same, and then some.

Re: Random: Running Zelda: Breath Of The Wild With 29 Mods Is As Chaotic As You'd Expect

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia I've never tried or had the inclination to try and copy a Wii U disc, but I've ripped plenty of DVDs back in the day, and besides Disney DVDs, none of them were encrypted. The general rule was that if it was playable on a PC, you could also copy it to a PC. Or simply copy the video folder and recompile them into a new DVD. Easy as pie.

And as I've already mentioned in another thread: yes, it's a grey area on the one hand, but on the other hand, as long as you don't copy it for financial gain, for example by mass-producing copies, then you actually can legally make a copy for home usage. And that goes for music AND movies. Games not so much, because that's an entirely different category with its own rule set, but I've ripped all my GameCube discs to an external hard drive regardless, because I don't care either way, and no officer of the law is going to come and visit me to rummage through my collection...

Re: Waifu Uncovered Mixes Bullet-Hell With Boobies, And Even Comes With A "One Finger" Mode

ThanosReXXX

@HappyMaskedGuy Well, at least Summer Time Saga is free, so there's that, but graphically, it ain't all that much, huh?

If they were to go that route, then I'd propose a couple of other titles, namely Acting Lessons and Being A DIK, from the aptly named indie developer Dr. PinkCake.

They're available on Steam, and after having played the second game,
I can honestly say that it's probably the best looking adult game I've ever played. Well, at least character-wise. Some of the environments could do with some more work, but considering it's all being made by just one person...

And contrary to most of these types of games, the one I played actually also had an engaging and interesting story line, besides all the obvious naughty bits, which was a pleasant surprise to me.

Re: Review: Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise - A Fun Game, In Disguise

ThanosReXXX

@Apportal_SMM2 Yeah, I'm from the generation WAY before all those people who are always offended and posting their entire lives on social media to feel better about themselves, so I'm able to take a hit or two and still shrug it off.

Besides, your point was completely sound and logical, so there wasn't anything I could counter it with, other than acting insulted, indeed...

Re: Review: Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise - A Fun Game, In Disguise

ThanosReXXX

@suikoden There's a LOT of grey area between uncanny valley bad graphics and the demands of "graphics whores". Like simply asking for graphics that are more representative/fitting of modern day hardware. Personally, I'm not too focused on graphics, seeing as I still play all of my old games and consoles on a regular basis.

Even for a smaller company, something more akin to Xbox 360/PS3-ish kind of aesthetics should easily have been possible, in my humble opinion. This looks like it has been made with Unreal Engine 2 or lower.

But I could have overlooked that, had it JUST been the graphics, but there's far more cons here than just janky graphics, so yeah...

@Apportal_SMM2 I suppose that's a fair point.

Re: Review: Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise - A Fun Game, In Disguise

ThanosReXXX

I can't take this review seriously. According to another Nintendo only site I frequent, all the cons (on top of excruciating lag all over the place) of this game are:

  • unnecessary, time-wasting (filler) activities
  • graphical performances straight from the Wii era
  • unclear and monotonous quests
  • static environments

and they rated it a big, fat 2.5, which is a far more likely grade for something as laughably bad as this.

Great voice acting is one thing, and absolutely important, as is an interesting setting, but if they are stacked up against SO many painfully obvious negatives, then it isn't really worth all that much anymore...

Re: Sega's New Astro City Micro-Console Is Packed With 36 Arcade Gems

ThanosReXXX

@ritouf You'd be surprised how good it could work. If this mini-cab is anything like the Neo Geo Mini or even better in quality, then you'll be able to play on it just fine. I have the Neo Geo Mini, and I'd say it's quite comfortable to use, even for someone with medium to large-sized hands like mine. Yes it is small, but I didn't experience any discomfort, and initially, I played on it almost every day.

As for these kinds of things being stable or not: on the Neo Geo Mini, the underside is fitted with relatively large rubber pads/anti-slip surfaces, so you'd have to be REALLY rough with it to displace it while playing. I'm assuming the same will be true for this Sega mini desktop arcade.

Re: Random: Running Zelda: Breath Of The Wild With 29 Mods Is As Chaotic As You'd Expect

ThanosReXXX

Well, his user name is certainly appropriate, because he cackles like a crow. Don't like his over-exaggerated demeanor either. Highly annoying, which made it a rather cringe-inducing watch.

Some things were funny, but in general, I don't care much for mods, especially not if they're just stupid ones that add nothing but debatable comedic value.

On a side note: I could also have done without the stupid continuous comment/chat stream on screen all the time, as well as his stupid, nerdy mug. Just show the game itself, your voice is already annoying enough without adding all the other highly distracting crap.

Re: Sega Just Announced A New Micro-Console, And It's Packed With 36 Arcade Gems

ThanosReXXX

Well, looks like this is going to hurt my wallet, if it ever arrives on Western shores, because I definitely NEED to have this...

As for the screen being too small for some: complete nonsense. I use the Neo Geo Mini on a regular basis, and that screen is just fine, and this one actually seems to be a bit bigger, from looking at those pictures.

And on the back, there's two USB ports, so attaching any of your own preferred controllers is probably also not going to be an issue. It's better than the Neo Geo Mini in that respect, because those controller ports were custom inputs, so I had to get two of those on top of the cost of the console itself. (Well, "had to"... you know what I mean. Just wanted to get the complete package, and it's nice being able to play two player games when connected to the TV)

Re: Review: Ultracore - DICE's Lost 1994 Run And Gun Shooter Is Reborn On Switch

ThanosReXXX

@StuartGipp That's what I was thinking as well. This is more of a retro-novelty for those who perhaps already knew of this game, back in the day, or for those fans of Psygnosis and/or Amiga games, like me, not so much for the decidedly more modern gamer.

That's also often my objection to a number of these "retro-inspired" games: there definitely is a good number of them that do it absolutely right, but there's also a considerable amount of them that just use it as a slogan or a lure, and then spoil the illusion with far too many modern effects or features that would never have been possible back in those days, and that is what breaks the immersion for me, personally.

But on the other hand, it may be a gateway for newer gamers to ACTUAL retro games, so perhaps it is still a good thing in that regard...

Re: Review: Ultracore - DICE's Lost 1994 Run And Gun Shooter Is Reborn On Switch

ThanosReXXX

@Priceless_Spork Couldn't agree more.

@StuartGipp It's not so much about "liking" entering passwords, it's just about keeping a game in its original form, as it was supposed to be released, all these years ago, at least for me, personally. I obviously can't speak for others.

As such, I don't mind any "ancient"/outdated features to be in there, seeing as it is basically also an outdated game. So, what you're getting is actually a piece of almost forgotten history, restored/finished in its original glory, without any tampering or modernization.

And yes, even back then, a lot of games already had save features, but password levels were also quite common, especially in games made by Psygnosis, I might add, as an Amiga veteran. (on a side note: I still have three of those wonderfully amazing systems lying around here. An A500, an A1200 and a CD32, all still fully functional)

Re: Review: Ultracore - DICE's Lost 1994 Run And Gun Shooter Is Reborn On Switch

ThanosReXXX

Psygnosis? ACTUAL retro title? Amiga-like aesthetics?

Say no more, I'm in!

Not understanding all the negativity either, when this is an original old title, not some faux-16 bit remake or lookalike. Games simply didn't have these features back then, and this one still not having them or not having them added, only adds to its authenticity of being a lost and ultimately reclaimed title from the 90s.

It's not supposed to emulate something more modern, but apparently, some people don't seem to be able to grasp that concept...

Re: Soapbox: I’m Super Excited About The Future Of Animal Crossing: New Horizons

ThanosReXXX

@rjejr Wow, is that five years ago already? I kind of feel like it was more recent. Just goes to show you, how fast time goes for us 50+ guys. Definitely NOT a good thing...

And I can definitely relate to plans not becoming reality: I wanted to have a big celebration with family and friends, for my demi-centennial, but of course, due to the global misery we're in right now, none of that was possible. So, instead, it was just me and my old man, and some beers...

Re: Soapbox: I’m Super Excited About The Future Of Animal Crossing: New Horizons

ThanosReXXX

@rjejr No, not yet. Depending on where you're going, it's mandatory, but I'm not going to any of the relevant locations, and they're not testing people at home, or forcing them to go get a test.

And numbers of victims here are still on the decline, so contrary to the States, there isn't an overbearing need to do any rigorous testing.

I visit my old man every other weekend, in his little garden house at the community gardens, and neither of us has suffered any consequences for it. We just keep a bit of distance, no handshaking or bear hugs, like we'd normally do, but other than that, the rest goes just like usual.

Re: Soapbox: I’m Super Excited About The Future Of Animal Crossing: New Horizons

ThanosReXXX

@TG16_IS_BAE I think that the simplest way to put it, is that it is a "holiday" sim, or a "create your home away from home" sim.

Much like with a game like Go Vacation!, in which case the purpose is conveyed a bit more obvious and direct through the title, it's a game where nothing is mandatory/obligatory, and everything can go at your own pace. It's a leisure time game, a bit of unwinding in a relaxing way, after a hard day's work, or a stressful day.

Yes, it has elements of crafting, but it's not Minecraft, because it literally doesn't go that deep. You don't have to build your own home or dig massive caves. It's just you being on an island, gathering resources, decorating your home, fishing, insect hunting, and all kinds of other recreational activities.

So, in short, it's a bit like an expansive Tamagochi, except this one won't die if you leave it alone for a while. Life will go on, on the island, even if you don't play it for weeks, or even months, and I guess that this is also one of the lures of the game: do what you want, either play it every day for a bit, or play it once a week, or even once a month. You decide. Obviously, there are some rules, but they're pretty lenient, and other than that, there's nothing in there that you MUST do, unless you want to.

But it does need to click with you, so if you read this, you'll possibly think: "what the... ?", but in order to get it, you'll need to play it for more than just an hour or so. Spend a day with it, and it'll more than likely dawn on you.

Re: Soapbox: I’m Super Excited About The Future Of Animal Crossing: New Horizons

ThanosReXXX

@rjejr Ultimate Alliance is perfectly playable on your own, although it can obviously be played in co-op. I played all previous parts, AND their prequels, by myself as well, so I'm used to it. All the DLC has now been released, far as I know. There's even a complete bundle, combining all three packs into one.

As for ACNH: that's why I said just use the free trial, or take one month, and then cancel. Getting more stuff for your island and achieving some progress in the game is well worth the 4 bucks, if you ask me. (edit: crap, missed the part where you mentioned signing up for a family subscription, so never mind)

And to answer your question: no, I'm not in an Animal Crossing forum, I've simply exchanged codes with people in the Chit-Chat thread, so hop in whenever you want.

Re: Soapbox: I’m Super Excited About The Future Of Animal Crossing: New Horizons

ThanosReXXX

@rjejr Ah, no sorry needed, my friend. I suffer the same issues sometimes. Guess that comes with age. But, having said that, I don't believe I ever mentioned it to you. I bought Animal Crossing, along with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and a Neo Geo Mini, as somewhat of a momentary final treat for myself, because it was paid for by my final summer bonus as an independent contractor.

That ship has sailed now, so on to darker waters it is, now...

Either way, in general, things are indeed better here. Or at least a heck of a lot better than in Florida, California and Texas, the latter has all but declared a renewed state of emergency, if our news reports are to be believed, so I don't envy you guys over there, and I feel for my former home state of California, so I hope that this storm will ultimately pass as well.

As for your Animal Crossing woes: kinda weird that Redd hasn't appeared yet. On my island, he actually appeared BEFORE the museum had expanded itself with an art gallery, and to be honest, I don't know what I did to trigger that event. I do always chat to all the residents, because I remember them mentioning a suspicious character, before I actually met him.

As for the cherries: I could help you with that, and probably with quite a bit more, if you hop on over to my island. Got to have your friend code for that, though, so I can send you an invite.

If you don't have Nintendo Online, then you could either use the trial period of 7 days that comes with the game, or just take a month for 4 bucks. It's well worth it for this game at least.

Just let me know when or whatever, and we'll fix that no cherry tree problem for you...

Re: Random: Miss Nintendo Directs? Check Out This Crowd-Pleasing 'Nontendo Direct' Presentation

ThanosReXXX

@Damo Yeah, I know. The thanks was more meant as a general gesture of support towards Nintendo Life, because I actually DO appreciate articles like these, contrary to all these professional whiners. But of course, also credits to @ryancraddock for putting up this article.

@johnvboy True enough, and I definitely agree with you on Nintendo's behavior, policy or whatever we should call it, but on the other hand, I'm also not about to throw an absolute hissy-fit about some harmless fun. And no offense, but I can't help but shake my head and laugh in the face of people who are apparently not able to read or look twice before they click and comment on an article, and then subsequently start blaming the site for their own mistake.

The thumbnail clearly said "Nontendo", so it was obvious from the get go for me, that this was fake, and the article title only confirmed that. And just for the hell of it, I also checked on my smart phone, and even on there, I could quite easily see that, so people using that as an excuse are off their rocker as well, far as I'm concerned...

Re: Random: Miss Nintendo Directs? Check Out This Crowd-Pleasing 'Nontendo Direct' Presentation

ThanosReXXX

Wow, the myopic idiots are out in full force again, I see...

Next time, before all of you start crying: RTFM, people. RTFM...

@Damo Hey, Damien. Great article and a fun video, to tide us over while Nintendo is sitting on their chest of treasures, showing us absolutely nothing. And all for a good cause as well.

Cheers, mate!
And let's have another beer to celebrate you having paid off your student loan...

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons' First Bug-Off Event Takes Place Tomorrow

ThanosReXXX

Here's a pro tip for people new to Animal Crossing, or for people that weren't aware of this handy trick:

The best method to catch bugs is to press and hold the A button while having the net equipped, which will enable you to stealthily creep upon any unsuspecting bug, without the risk of it scaring them off, regardless of whether or not their animation has started or stopped. (a hint that was mentioned in the article about catching bugs, that was posted yesterday)

And once you're close enough, simply release the A button, and you'll automatically scoop them up.

It's the easiest, most fail-safe way of getting your hands on all those little creepy-crawlies...

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Beetles - How To Catch Beetles, Tips And Complete List

ThanosReXXX

@austin_voigt Actually, an even better method to catch them, is to press and hold the A button while having the net equipped, which will enable you to stealthily creep upon any unsuspecting bug, without the risk of it scaring them off, regardless of whether or not their animation has started or stopped.

And once you're close enough, simply release the A button, and you'll automatically scoop them up.

Re: Developer Of Turn-Based Monochrome Mech Mash-Up Wolfstride Wants To Bring It To Switch

ThanosReXXX

@Damo I already got that, and I'm perfectly fine with turn-based combat, but what I'm not liking is never seeing any ACTUAL combat. You just see one mech doing some kind of attack, and then the screen flips to the other mech to see the effect of that attack. I never get the sense of two mechs actually fighting, because they're not on screen at the same time.

Even Pokémon Stadium on the N64 did a far better job with that than this much newer effort. Another good option would have been to go for an Advance Wars split screen attack sequence. So, yeah, like I said: not for me...

Re: Developer Of Turn-Based Monochrome Mech Mash-Up Wolfstride Wants To Bring It To Switch

ThanosReXXX

@Damo I've watched that trailer, and there isn't really "a lot" of footage. Would also be quite impossible with it being as short as it is. And I'm not seeing any mech battle or mech gameplay, just stylized, almost card-based interchanging screens of characters supposedly hitting something.

Again, that's NOT what I expected, when I saw the title of this article on the front page, so I guess this one's just not for me.
