If you hadn't already guessed from the title, Paper Mario: The Origami King has a pretty strong origami theme running throughout its plot. It's set in the Origami Kingdom, features origami characters, and with the entire series being rather literally about paper, you can bet that there'll be plenty of origami puns to be found throughout the adventure, too.
In a very neat touch, Nintendo has managed to break the fourth wall by introducing origami-style promotional leaflets in Japan. As shown in the tweet below from @PushDustIn, the leaflets display various pieces of information as you continue to unfold them - which is cool enough on its own, never mind with the attachment to the game's theme.
We're now less than ten days away from the game's launch on Switch - it arrives in stores on 17th July - so make sure to stay tuned for our full review coming soon. In the meantime, the very first review score has now been published by Japanese publication, Famitsu, with the new release receiving a similar rating to past titles.
Excited to get your hands on the new game? Let us know with a comment.

That actually IS cool. Gotta love the Japanese, for artsy stuff like this. (among other things)
That's really cool! Future collector's item?
I thought the normal leaflets they hand out in Japanese game stores were pretty cool...but this is awesome!
Here's hoping the pamphlet isn't better than the game itself
BRAIN EXPLODES
I miss the manuals...
we get loads of these here in switzerland usually for the zoo and stuff. kids love them
This was to be expected haha
This needs to be included with every physical copy of the game. I miss the days of manuals and reading through them before even thinking of playing the game. And I know people will say 'there are digital manuals', it's not the same and no one will ever convince me otherwise 😄
@Anguspuss You got pamphlets folded as intricately as this at the Zoo? Not just regular pamphlets with regular folding?
Any chance of these pamphlets getting distributed in the West?
Make your own

I want it. Good stuff
Omg I'm so confused 😂
@Don Operation: Rainfall 2?
This reminds me of these wonderful novelties that games used to come with. I believe they were called "printed manuals". XD
@StefanN yes we did super cool kids loved themevery one was different animal
The title sounded sarcastic, but the pamphlet looks awesome. Which one is it?!
I would attempt to properly unfold this, destroy it, and curse myself for being such an idiot.
@Tyranexx Yeah, I could infinitely flip through a good one of those as well.
Not gonna lie this is pretty cool.
Too bad the actual game it's advertising IMO isn't, judging by everything seen so far, but hey.
@Anguspuss Dude that sounds great! I'm sure i would love those, even as an adult haha. Can you tell me which Zoo? I mean, who knows i always wanted to visit Switzerland and i love visiting the local Zoo!
That is a very effective form of advertising. I love it.
This looks like the exact same design as a Switch promo pamphlet thing from launch in the U.S. I think I got one from Target. It really was fun to just keep folding through several times in a row. Great design!
@PlayedNSlayed reading that manual pre gameplay was like 20% of the enjoyment of games to me back then. And all the official artwork that I’d sit and try to recreate when I wasn’t playing.
Gamestop used to have the exact same thing advertising the nintendo switch
So cool! Pretty strong way of advertising it. Let's hope the game is as good as it seems to be...
They made one like this in the states to advertise the New 2DS XL, but it makes way more sense with Paper Mario!
This is really cool.
This is nothing new, however. I saw something like this at the Jersey Mall Demo for the Switch, only the ad was for the Switch and 3ds instead of a singular game.
didnt they do this for yoshi?
yea this isnt even new for Nintendo?

Saw a pamphlet exactly like this years ago, can't for the life in me remember what for. Provides a lot of entertainment for something that doesn't normally, just like the box that Revolut cards come in.
@ThanosReXXX You forgot to say "first." 😉
Yeah, I need 1 of those. Maybe Nintendo will let us download something similar for 500 platinum coins in MyNintendo? 😎
This is so cool, never played a paper Mario game before, but the seamless open world element, plus the awesome visuals are pulling me in.
@Shambo So much good art, lore, and useful instructions, not to mention that wonderful new print/ink smell!
@rjejr Seriously? Man, we're WAY too old for that kind of infantile stuff.
Or are we?
On a side note: download it? And then having to fold it myself? That's never going to be even remotely as good as this ready-made one. I'll leave it to the Japanese...
That leaflet...

The last paper (styled) Mario 'Sticker Star' I bought on the 3ds was highly disappointing, hopefully this will be better.
I was interested at first but that last trailer killed it for me. I wanted something closer to Thousand Year Door and Origami King looks more like Sticker Star - with somehow less creative enemies. They aren't themed after stationary stuff, it's actual stationary items!
That’s just adorable...
As someone who hates sticker star but loveeeees color splash I am really pumped for this game. It looks to be the culmination of everything they've been trying to do with paper mario since spm. Now nintendo do a remake of the first two pm games, put mario rpg on the snes online and get alpha dream to do a hd port of partners in time and all my mario rpg needs will be met for the next 10 years lol
The leaflets like that i have ever seen maybe 20 years ago.
@Kimyonaakuma Have you played the game somehow?
@Anti-Matter apple has square banana
@Mrnotultra cool story
@Yosher well, at least you gave it a chance :/
@tseliot Why thank you
@Tyranexx When games still game in cardboard boxes, I wasn't allowed to play a whole lot, so even just looking at the screenshots and illustrations was a great way to get lost in the world of a good game. And although I mostly played handheld games on Game Boys mostly, a good manual or games magazine was my preferred literature to take along during a visit to the toilet
@StefanN was the main one in zurich the one with the well woman eating russian tiger lol. they also have a brilliant kids zoo near zurich as well. smaller but my kids loved it. plus they can get pic taken with a big old sea lion
@Shambo Yes! I don't know how many times I took along manuals and guides on the school bus and family trips. Some definitely showed their use over time lol. I still have a few of them.
@tseliot I gave Sticker Star and Color Splash a chance. Both were some of the biggest disappointments in my entire life. Origami King looks to be building on what those two games set. So yeah forgive me if I'm not exactly excited for this game.
@ThanosReXXX New plan. I start going around to all the old NL articles and type "Last" in every one.
Followed by - No Nintendo Life I don't have any more to say. 😂
@rjejr Yeah... that definitely is a bit of an annoyance, isn't it? Sometimes, less is more, but the NLife comments section just won't allow it...
@ThanosReXXX Semi-related. Over on sister-site PS they had a pic of the new PS5 in red, white is ugly. My immediate reaction was "Sold!", which of course I coudlnt' do, so I followed it up w/ "in a market down in New Orleans." Not sure of your musical tastes but it was my jab at cancel culture. 😉
@rjejr That entire comment was almost like reading an entirely different language to me. Please elaborate. Computing error...
(probably also due to being slightly inebriated thanks to a healthy intake of Bacardi & Coke)
@ThanosReXXX Ooh, Barcadi and Coke, go you. I had 3, might have been 4, beers Monday, took me until this afternoon to fully recover. My own fault for not drinking since December, turned me into a lightweight.
Yeah I can't translate any of that, don't worry about it. Enjoy your buzz.
@rjejr I'm back, and fully sober. Comment made a bit more sense now, save for the cancel culture bit. No idea what that is. My musical taste is VERY broad, though, so it goes from classical to rock, from pop to fado, so chances are that I might like it...
@ThanosReXXX "cancel culture bit. No idea what that is."
Is life so good over there that you don't know what "cancel culture" even is, or you just don't understand what I meant in that comment?
https://nypost.com/article/what-is-cancel-culture-breaking-down-the-toxic-online-trend/
@rjejr Ah, okay. No, nothing to do with life being better over here or not understanding it in the context of the comment, I've really never heard of it.
Must be my total aversion and, ahem... "canceling" of social media and it's deplorable culture and following, why I wasn't yet familiar with that term. And now that I know of it, I actually feel a little dumber instead of smarter. Social media does that to an extremely logical and empathic person like me.
Social media makes no sense, has no essential use, and is primarily used for the betterment of individual egos, so far as I'm concerned, it's dead yesterday, along with psychopathic b****rds like Darth Zuckerberg.
@ThanosReXXX That's the most - hey you kids get off my lawn - post you've ever written. I've read turning 50 does that to a guy.
Social media is probably only about 85% bad, there's good to be had if you look. Really no better or worse than the NL and PS comments. 🤣
@rjejr Well, for me personally, it doesn't have anything to do with turning 50: I've already had that exact same sentiment ever since my early thirties. If anything, it has simply worsened, or far as I'm concerned, it has been refined, so I can express my feelings a bit more elaborate and with even more venom and vitriol.
Sure, there are good people everywhere, but I'm not so much talking about the people, but about those media themselves: the underlying mechanics are what I absolutely detest, hence my hate for people like Zuckerberg.
If I could actually snap people out of existence like my avatar, I definitely wouldn't hesitate to do so, not even for a micro-second. Without SOB's like him, the world would already be a little bit better.
@rjejr And the fact that he looks like an emotionless serial killer is certainly also not doing him any good in my book...
@ThanosReXXX He does look evil, I'll grant you that. He could play Jeffrey Dahmer in a movie sans make-up.
@rjejr He sometimes comes across as an automaton, or someone with a serious case of being emotionally detached. Perhaps he's autistic.
Or perhaps he simply IS an emotionless maniac. Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Either way, I'll definitely pop a bottle of bubbly if a truck runs him over one day, that's for sure.
