@MegaVel91 That's your opinion, and that too is fine. We don't have to agree, but I'm sticking with mine. If you want to continue to be bothered by someone else's opinion, then have at it, but I'd like to do something more useful with my precious time and energy than having a rather useless discussion.
@GrailUK Now this is pod racing? Was there any other kind, then? And mind you, if this is from some ad, which I suspect it is, then it might have been a decidedly local one, in which case I would never have known.
@MegaVel91 Hold your horses, man. I meant in games.
Much like pixel art and the "closely resembles" flash type art, anime style is WAY over-used, and to me personally, it just seems like a (cheap) way to make your game look cooler or more interesting to a certain audience, and as an ACTUAL anime fan, it's just not grabbing me, sorry.
As for the rest: no need to get angry about that either, it's just my personal opinion, and if you don't agree with that, then that's perfectly fine. As I said, if others do like or are interested in this game, then they are welcome to it, but it's just not for me.
@MegaVel91 Well honestly, if it doesn't grab me or look interesting enough to get my attention, then no. And I was already disappointed when I clicked on the article link, because I was expecting a mech game, a genre I'm a real fan of, and this is just some side scrolling crap.
And as mentioned, I don't like the faux-anime style. Non Asian developers should really stop trying to copy that, because it always looks off, and you can instantly see that it's not made by actual anime artists/developers.
But having said that, I'm glad for the people that do like this. Just because it's not for me, doesn't mean that I don't want anyone else to play or like it either, so anyone else is welcome to it, far as I'm concerned.
@COVIDberry You're very welcome. If you have any other questions and/or want to have more information on games or consoles, I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.
Some starter tips: I don't know which older consoles you own, are interested in or are planning to buy, but as mentioned, for anything from GameCube and up, you might want to look into VGA boxes or HDMI converters.
A lot of those have been reviewed here on Nintendo Life. However, depending on the model GameCube, a fully wired SCART cable could still offer a VERY good picture quality on a CRT monitor. And I do mean monitor, NOT a TV.
The best CRT screens out there, which are also highly coveted/wanted by die-hard retro gamers, are the PVM or BVM screens. Most are from Sony, but there are also other brands.
Here's an interesting article on those: https://www.retrorgb.com/rgbmonitors.html Besides offering the best picture quality for almost all retro consoles, the other bonus is that these monitors will still support light gun games, which modern screens obviously don't.
I still have several of my Dreamcast light guns gathering dust on top of a closet, because I can't use them anymore on my modern TV...
@COVIDberry Usually, when people are talking about using a CRT for retro games, they don't mean Xbox games, and obviously, it's only original Xbox games that aren't in HD. Regardless of that, they are still made in 480p, a resolution which does NOT look best on a CRT at all, so all three consoles of that generation, and the Dreamcast as well, actually look better on a non-CRT screen. That is, provided you use the right cables and/or converter boxes.
But for anything before that generation, so 64 bit and lower, I'd most definitely prefer CRT, so you assumed incorrectly.
And besides, I was only talking about Xbox games anyway. For example: I have the physical version of the first person shooter Black, which was already backwards compatible with the Xbox 360, but whereas on that console, it simply just played, with no extras and a few minor glitches here and there, it's upscaled 4 times on Xbox One S, and 8 times on Xbox One X, and besides the upscale, graphics have also been cleaned up and it runs at a better and more steady frame rate.
Now imagine that game on Series X, with additional features such as HDR and ray tracing on top of all the improvements that the Xbox One line of consoles already offered. The game will never have looked or played better than it will on there.
@Aneira You're welcome. Mind you, they're not there yet, but under Phil Spencer's management, the Xbox brand has made great strides to assure that they come out firing in this upcoming generation, and his whole point with strengthening backwards compatibility is to make the new Series X one unified system, on which Xbox games of all previous generations can be played, with added features and better performance.
@electrolite77 Yeah, that probably has something to do with it.
I wouldn't be able to come up with any other valid explanation, since each game's serial number and each Xbox profile is unique, so you'd think they'd be able to work something out.
@electrolite77 It most certainly is quite the achievement. And I'm also very much looking forward to how it will all play out and be expanded upon on the new consoles.
The only pet peeves I have, is that games can't be played directly from the disc, so I that's why I'll still keep my Xbox 360 around as well, and it would also be nice to be able to play games without the disc in the drive, once they're installed. I understand why that is, but I'm pretty sure they could come up with some kind of security measure, such as buying an additional key or something, or having to enter a unique code, so they know the game is actually yours.
@Aneira Well, I personally own quite a few OG Xbox titles that I've played on my Xbox 360 (around 94, if I remember correctly. haven't really counted them, of late), and far as I know, all of them run just fine, with only minor glitches here and there.
And besides that, I've never been much of a strict person, in that regard, so if a game drops a few frames or has some screen tearing here or there, then I certainly wouldn't let that stop me from enjoying it regardless.
But having said that, I suppose that it wasn't perfect. However, I have a sense that your opinion on the matter is highly influenced by past experiences, and that is just not a good measure of where things stand now.
Ever since Phil Spencer took over, things have changed MASSIVELY, on several fronts, and backwards compatibility in particular, has gone from strength to strength, starting with Xbox One, which not only offers near-perfect emulation, but also graphical and performance improvements on several levels, depending on whether you have the original Xbox One, the One S or the One X. I have several Xbox 360 and OG Xbox games on my Xbox One S, and they've never looked or run better than on there.
And the upcoming Series X is going to go one huge step further, by also adding ray tracing and HDR to all these older games, so even in games that never even had that functionality or option to begin with, and that is going to BIG, make no mistake.
So, in short, it IS an important selling point, because where Sony will only offer this rather bare bones emulation of their previous platform on the new PS5, Microsoft offers all these extras, to make playing older games even better than before, and many people that support and like and/or prefer Xbox over PlayStation would like to see it being expanded upon even further, and for good reason.
There's some pretty decent articles and videos out there on the topic, if you're interested. I'd certainly say it's worth investigating, if only to get a more current and correct view on things than you have now.
@Damo That was an interesting read, Damo. I do have one tiny niggle, though: you've missed one of the key USP's of the Xbox platform, something which Phil Spencer is VERY invested in, to make sure it will only get bigger and better over time, namely multi-generational backwards compatibility, something to which Sony's effort pales in comparison, with only PS4 being mentioned as being backwards compatible, and maybe not even fully.
Then again: even in this generation, their efforts on that front were already vastly inferior to Microsoft's, so it's not that much of a surprise that Microsoft is going to do it better in the next generation as well.
No great loss. If this plays anything like the classic Hyper Sports games, then the JoyCon's feeble thumb sticks wouldn't even be able to deal with it anyways...
@Moroboshi876 Yeah, it's a great series, if you like retro side scrolling shooters. All of these were originally released on arcade machines and Neo Geo consoles, but after that console died, the team behind it still made some more games.
This is one of them, called In the Hunt, and it's also available on the Switch, so if you like Metal Slug, then you might just like this one as well:
And then there's also indie teams, inspired by such games, and coming out with efforts of their own. This is a particularly good one called Huntdown:
If you don't own it already, it's definitely worth considering, and it has voice acting throughout, which is quite hilarious, if you like 90s action movies and all the "bad@ss" language used in them.
@Moroboshi876 Well, I tried to search closest to your area, but there's other European shops where it's even cheaper, so I'm all but sure that you could get it somewhere for that price, postage & packaging excluded.
On a side note: if you've modded your Wii or Wii U, you could of course always download it. And as an added bonus, you could then take the NTSC version instead, which is superior, because it runs in 60Hz mode.
@Moroboshi876 Well, if someone says a certain game is hard to find, then I literally interpret it as such, not as "it's actually pretty easy to find, but I just don't want to pay more than 30 euros for it"...
All kidding aside, the prices in those links are pretty normal, far as I'm concerned, so if someone would REALLY want to have this collection, then that should not be an obstacle at all.
@Supadav03 Well, if it's any comfort: you were half-right: I actually AM from the States, but when I was young, I moved to Europe, and now live in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Great city to live in, by the way.
As for the site community: I see that @Crimson_Ridley already beat me to saying something about that, although I want to add that the community is probably 50/50 European/American, so it's not just Yanks and Brits here: the European members come from just about every country imaginable.
@Supadav03 Well, I live in Europe, so that would still be quite a way to travel for me.
Then again: I might still visit this particular park one day. But then I would rather combine it with some other locations and/or sight-seeing, instead of just going all that way for a Mario theme park.
@Sans_Undertale You shouldn't want to be that guy who feels the need to correct people on things that don't really need any correcting, seeing as most other people in the comments section know what they're talking about regardless...
@Entrr_username Well, that's exactly the point of this service: so people can play their arcade games at home, so they don't NEED to go to the arcades. And that in return, is also the benefit for the arcades themselves: they'll still be making money, even though people can't physically visit them.
It's basically a win-win situation. Well, at least for the people in Japan, because this isn't going to come to Western regions any time soon...
@Benji80 Ah, that sucks. I've had that happen to me once or twice, but luckily, I use Firefox, so I can always go back a page when I get a site error or something, because Firefox saves drafts of comments.
Either way, likewise. We'll chat elsewhere. I usually hang around in the Chit-Chat thread, among other nice people, or you'll find me in anything retro related in the forums, such as the official GameCube topic.
@Benji80 You're welcome. Far as NSO is concerned: I have owned a Switch for over a year now, and I haven't bitten yet, because I feel like the service as a whole is laughably underwhelming, and a MASSIVE step back from the Virtual Console, what with Nintendo not even allowing/enabling people to buy/own titles.
Far as I'm concerned, they turned the Virtual Console into a VERY weak and outdated derivative of Game Pass on the Xbox.
I do like retro gaming, obviously, and I own quite a few of the Mini consoles. I actually bought the Neo Geo Mini last week. Now all I need is a Turbografx 16 mini...
Having said that, I do have to stress that I mostly like REAL retro. By now, I am getting quite sick and tired of all the "retro-inspired" pixel art games with modern effects and such. Either they look worse than the actual inspiration, or they look too good to be an inspiration of 8 or 16 bit games.
There's a handful that do it right, but quite a lot of them simply don't interest me at all.
@Benji80 Oh, it definitely still looks good, even on modern TVs, so it holds up pretty nicely, especially considering its age. Mind you: only that first video is representative of what you'll actually see on your own TV. The second video is the game being played in the Dolphin emulator, at a higher resolution.
Anyway, in case you still have a purple cube or a GameCube compatible Wii lying around, then I'd still recommend it, even though modern games on modern consoles take precedence with many of us. And you could probably get it for a reasonable price.
@Benji80 The best racer on the GameCube, that came closest to being a realistic racer, was R: Racing Evolution. It was still quite arcadey in a number of ways, but other than that, it had most of the stuff that you'd find in a sim racer. I still own the game and play it every now and then.
Controls are a bit stiff, compared to modern day racers, but it's still a highly entertaining racer, once you get the hang of it. And it came with a four player Pac-Man game called Pac-Man VS. Great fun with a couple of friends or family members.
Looks nice, and perhaps even something to put on the "to buy" list, but
I definitely do NOT see anything that looks Disney or Don Bluth inspired, much less "classic animation" inspired. This is just one of those decidedly Euro-anime looking type of efforts.
There's always something off about those non-Asian anime type animations, that makes it relatively easy to see, when compared to ACTUAL anime.
Oh, and "Ratoidvania"? Cringe level increased by 10...
But having said all that, this could still be an entertaining game, so I'll keep an eye on it.
@Dang69 Couldn't agree more. I'm well past fed up with pixel-art or 8 or 16 bit inspired stuff, that doesn't even remotely look or feel like the actual thing it's supposed to be inspired by...
Wow, seems like the Northern Hemisphere is definitely more lucky than the other half of the world. Looks like a truck load of stuff is disappearing over there...
@NEStalgia Prius was just an example, obviously. I don't even like that car, but the demeanor I created with that example comment, is exactly what people over here expect and/or think of Americans in general...
But yeah, agreed on the hospital aesthetics. A lot of cars now also look far too samey, at least from the side or from behind, of course also due to the everlasting quest for the lowest air resistance values and such, but still. There are still some differing designs, but sometimes, it's only the nose of the vehicle and some exclusive extras that make you realize that it's actually another brand of car that you're looking at.
Actually also agreed on the Super Famicom matching in design for your area, back in the day. But nowadays, it stands out because of not standing out, and just being a grey block of nothing, with some purple accents. In that respect, the other two parts of the world got the design with the better longevity, in my opinion.
Either way, I'm helping you hoping that we all get those same little Tokyo box cars. That'll teach your neighbors...
Maybe they can even make them autonomous, so we don't have to do anything at all anymore.
Funny that you mention several types of European vehicles that I also don't like. That Porsche Cayenne for example. I mean: who the HELL came up with that crap design, and what is up with that? Far as I'm concerned, it has NOTHING to do with Porsche. I certainly don't see it, anyway.
@NEStalgia That's not what I meant by what they detest. I meant the American attitude towards what "is" better. Something along the lines of "screw the environment and the Prius, which is a car for you-know-whats, I'll just drive my Ford Monster truck, and run 'em all off the road, and afterwards, I'll use a crow bar to pry them all out of my grill... "
And TRUST me, Europeans DO detest that. I've had to fight that stigma for almost as long as I've been living here, because as soon as people found out where I was from, all the prejudices and assumptions came out of the woodworks, usually starting with "you Americans... ", so nobody can tell me that they all LOVE American design or (especially) their views on things in general here, because they definitely don't.
Of course, there are exceptions, such as there being a rather big interest in Americana and American cars from the '50s and '60s, but in most other things, modesty or subtlety of design is key over here. Definitely not the "we like big and bulky" culture...
@NEStalgia Well, personally, I'd like my console to look sleek and sexy, and it would definitely feel very weird to stick a cartridge into a slot of something masculine...
But all kidding aside: that's just a discussion that neither side is ever going to agree on, seeing as, from my own experience as an expat, most Europeans absolutely detest the old American adage "bigger, better, faster" or "bigger is better", or whatever the hell it was.
And personally, where console design in general is concerned, I'm definitely also more in favor of sleek design. It makes it look futuristic, and fast, whereas a grey brick just looks slow and well... boring.
Arguably, the purple bits are also not really very manly at all, although His Royal Badness Prince would have probably disagreed...
@Tandy255 Ah, you mean AFTER you selected. I read that as if the answer was already marked for you, which is why I wondered.
Ah, even though I promised myself I wouldn't participate in these infernal, confidence-undermining quizzes anymore, I couldn't resist this one...
Got a 7/10, which SHOULD have been an 8/10, because that first question was an absolute stinker, @dartmonkey. Basically, three of the answers were right, so I was a bit disappointed when I found out that "the controllers could not be detached from the system" was wrong, because it DEFINITELY isn't wrong...
@AlexSora89 Well, it's not so much that I think that it's a problem, it's just that I'm getting a bit tired of all these "retro-inspired" games.
In the beginning it was new and interesting, and even somewhat of a ring back to the glory days of 8 and 16 bit gaming, but nowadays, these pixel-art games are often much uglier than what they are inspired by. I've played better looking games on the Commodore Amiga, over 30 years ago...
On a side note: perhaps needless to say, but obviously, what it is or isn't, is an individual sentiment.
I already had Mana Spark, so I grabbed all three of these right away. Can't complain about free games, now can we? Although I'm pretty sure some individuals will still find a way, sadly enough.
Either way, the first two looked interesting and refreshingly quirky to me, so I'm happy to have them. The third one looks a bit too much pixel-art inspired, but we'll see.
Glad to see that physical is still holding its own. I do buy and play digital only games, but those are mostly indie games or other games that simply aren't available in physical form and that I wouldn't want to miss out on, because I think it's stupid to ignore a great game just because of "reasons".
But, having said that, I couldn't give a rat's you-know-what about any digital discount on major releases, and my download speeds are in the upper regions, so that's not what's holding me back either, but what people just keep forgetting/ignoring/not realizing is all the rights and options that you wave away when going all digital.
I'll still be playing my physical copies of my Switch games decades from now. The same can definitely NOT be said for all digital. You can't lend them out to friends, you can't trade them in for other games, servers will eventually close down, so if your SD card craps out, you won't be able to re-download it etc., etc.
And besides the possible discounted price, all you get in return is convenience? I've got a carry case for the Switch, that can hold the console, an extra pair of JoyCon, and 12 games. Between those and the digital indie titles already installed on my Switch, I have more than enough games to keep me busy for months, if not years.
So yeah, physical copies and total ownership and certainty of longevity, whenever possible. Discounts be damned...

And they do send titles abroad as well.
On a side note: if you've modded your Wii or Wii U, you could of course always download it. And as an added bonus, you could then take the NTSC version instead, which is superior, because it runs in 60Hz mode.
Re: SNK's New Metal Slug Game Aiming For 2020 Release, Mobile Title Also In The Works
Re: SNK's New Metal Slug Game Aiming For 2020 Release, Mobile Title Also In The Works
@Moroboshi876 Hard to find?
Here you go:
Re: New Super Nintendo World Images Give Us Another Sneak Peek At The Park
@arabiansanchez True enough.
Re: New Super Nintendo World Images Give Us Another Sneak Peek At The Park
@Supadav03 Well, if it's any comfort: you were half-right: I actually AM from the States, but when I was young, I moved to Europe, and now live in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Great city to live in, by the way.
As for the site community: I see that @Crimson_Ridley already beat me to saying something about that, although I want to add that the community is probably 50/50 European/American, so it's not just Yanks and Brits here: the European members come from just about every country imaginable.
Re: New Super Nintendo World Images Give Us Another Sneak Peek At The Park
@Supadav03 Well, I live in Europe, so that would still be quite a way to travel for me.
Then again: I might still visit this particular park one day. But then I would rather combine it with some other locations and/or sight-seeing, instead of just going all that way for a Mario theme park.
Re: New Super Nintendo World Images Give Us Another Sneak Peek At The Park
@Sans_Undertale You shouldn't want to be that guy who feels the need to correct people on things that don't really need any correcting, seeing as most other people in the comments section know what they're talking about regardless...
Re: New Super Nintendo World Images Give Us Another Sneak Peek At The Park
Would I LIKE to visit? Hell, yeah! Probably never going to happen, though. Far too expensive a trip from here, just to visit an amusement park...
Re: Review: Space Invaders: The Invincible Collection - 40 Years Of History In One Package
@RadioHedgeFund Haha, brilliant comment. Made me smile.
Re: Yes, Sega's "Revolutionary" Announcement Is To Use Its Arcades As Cloud Gaming Data Centers
Re: Gear.Club Unlimited 2 Is Getting A Deluxe 'Tracks Edition' This August, Exclusive To Switch
Re: Gear.Club Unlimited 2 Is Getting A Deluxe 'Tracks Edition' This August, Exclusive To Switch
Re: Gear.Club Unlimited 2 Is Getting A Deluxe 'Tracks Edition' This August, Exclusive To Switch
I saw some copies of it flying around on Amazon.
Re: Gear.Club Unlimited 2 Is Getting A Deluxe 'Tracks Edition' This August, Exclusive To Switch
Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite Nintendo Switch Online SNES Games
My favorite ones by FAR are the ones that you can actually buy to own.
Oh, wait...

Re: New Metroidvania Curse Of The Sea Rats Takes To Kickstarter To Secure Switch Launch
@SmaMan "classic" soundtrack, achievement system, enticing stretch goals...
Re: New Metroidvania Curse Of The Sea Rats Takes To Kickstarter To Secure Switch Launch
Re: Legal Crackdown On Mario 64 PC Port Not Enough To Stop Modders From Improving It
@AlexSora89 "toe-mah-to, toe-may-to"
It's actually the other way around....
Re: Donkey Kong-Inspired Platforming Awaits In Castle Kong, Coming To Switch Next Month
Yeah... no, just no. Thanks, but no thanks.
@Dang69 Couldn't agree more. I'm well past fed up with pixel-art or 8 or 16 bit inspired stuff, that doesn't even remotely look or feel like the actual thing it's supposed to be inspired by...
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons: May Fish And Bugs - Catch These Critters Before June 1st
Wow, seems like the Northern Hemisphere is definitely more lucky than the other half of the world. Looks like a truck load of stuff is disappearing over there...
Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?
Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?
@WoomyNNYes Well, I'm somewhat happy that I got a positive grade, but still not happy that it's only a 7, so I'd probably better skip the next quiz...
Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?
Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?
@Zuljaras Is that a trick question?
Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?
@Zuljaras Fake consoles? Hm, better not let a certain someone know about that one, aye?
Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?
@Zuljaras If you're that happy with that score, I'd have to seriously wonder about your school exams...
Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?
Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?
@Tandy255 No, that wasn't it. But erm... you had the correct answer marked?
Re: How Well Do You Know Nintendo Hardware?
Ah, even though I promised myself I wouldn't participate in these infernal, confidence-undermining quizzes anymore, I couldn't resist this one...
Got a 7/10, which SHOULD have been an 8/10, because that first question was an absolute stinker, @dartmonkey. Basically, three of the answers were right, so I was a bit disappointed when I found out that "the controllers could not be detached from the system" was wrong, because it DEFINITELY isn't wrong...
Re: Switch Owners Can Claim Three Free Games If They Already Own Select Titles
@AlexSora89 Well, it's not so much that I think that it's a problem, it's just that I'm getting a bit tired of all these "retro-inspired" games.
In the beginning it was new and interesting, and even somewhat of a ring back to the glory days of 8 and 16 bit gaming, but nowadays, these pixel-art games are often much uglier than what they are inspired by. I've played better looking games on the Commodore Amiga, over 30 years ago...
On a side note: perhaps needless to say, but obviously, what it is or isn't, is an individual sentiment.
@RainCloud Europe.
Re: Switch Owners Can Claim Three Free Games If They Already Own Select Titles
I already had Mana Spark, so I grabbed all three of these right away. Can't complain about free games, now can we? Although I'm pretty sure some individuals will still find a way, sadly enough.
Either way, the first two looked interesting and refreshingly quirky to me, so I'm happy to have them. The third one looks a bit too much pixel-art inspired, but we'll see.
Re: Physical Games Are Thriving In The UK, Strongest April Sales Recorded In Five Years
Glad to see that physical is still holding its own.
