Re: Iwata: 3DS and NGP will Appeal to Different Target Audiences

SwerdMurd

@Bulb - not even close. NGP has a quad-core processor and is gonna be displaying, for all intents and purposes, lower-res PS3 games...3DS will be breaking a sweat to match Wii-quality graphics with its 3D display.

That said, I agree with the other comparison points. I'm interesting to see how this plays out this time around...although ultimately, being that I'll have both, I will no doubt be the winner overall I'm still a wee bit worried about the 3D display's fidelity in regards to how the content is scrolling on-screen...purely speculative worry though. Nintendo tends to amaze and innovate in regards to its new technology in ways that consistently blow my mind....I expect nothing less here 3rd parties however....let's not make this the first few years of the Wii all over again.

Re: Iwata: 3DS and NGP will Appeal to Different Target Audiences

SwerdMurd

I dunno about different audiences....I must be one of the few that's part of both audiences.

Granted, I think Iwata is a bit shaken after that NGP demo...I know my circle of friends is absolutely dumbfounded by the NGP, while the 3DS really hasn't done much for any of them (they both own DSes and just didn't enjoy any of the software offerings).

Re: There'll be Plenty of 3DS Consoles at Launch, UK

SwerdMurd

kinda tempted to cancel my preorder if this is the case in the US...the only reason I'm getting one at launch is to ensure I get one in the first place. Given the weak launch support passing on it opening weekend might not be such a bad idea...

Re: Review: R-Type (Game Boy)

SwerdMurd

I still have the DX version for GBC (has this, the second game, and a mix mode that plays all the levels of both). Great game--definitely not the best shmup ever...or the best series...but a solid, old shoot em up.

Guiness...number 1...really? I wonder if they've even scratched the surface of the genre play-wise....not that there's anything wrong with R-Type....but come on. Absolutely idiotic difficulty in a few places..unnecessarily punishing like a lot of old games were just for the sake of being obtuse. Cold respawn was and will forever be a terrible implementation in this genre.

Given the over 2 decades of substantial improvements in all facets of shoot em up gameplay...well, I suppose that's why the category is "Worth Playing". Probably more a "see where it started" award than a "one of the genre's best" award. Plus it's Guiness.... I trust their video game recommendations like I trust a blind guy to pilot my aircraft.

That said--better than most everything that came out around its time, and better than the original Gradius imo. This game (GB R-Type) was a TON better than the GB Gradius too...

Re: Australian 3DS Event Set for February 8th

SwerdMurd

pretty sure most Aussies already know to import an EU console given (as far as I understand) that they're the same region and can play the same games.

For the 4 that aren't...I hope they don't gouge you on prices as bad as they normally do I seriously can't believe how shafted you guys get price-wise....I just don't understand why. Is there some magic electronics tariff that doubles the price at the last minute or something?

Re: Why the 3DS Will Not Use an Achievement System

SwerdMurd

Even if they don't reveal how to get them, once people figure out, it gets posted online, and then everyone else reads trophylists and the thrill is gone. Personally I don't mind the omission and their reasoning kinda makes sense...The only real use I get out of them is tracking how far along my friends are in the games I lend them Then it's easy to know when to start pestering them to give them back.

Re: First Impressions: Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition

SwerdMurd

@liam - I was referring to the price most people charge for it...current demand (and Amazon ) puts it at around $18....sorry I didn't make that apparent. That is a good point though--I forget sometimes that some people don't waste their days scouring for internet prices on games they already own

Re: First Impressions: Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

SwerdMurd

kinda bummed that this is't part of revalations, but what can you do...

If it has online matchmaking the way the first one did, I might actually shell out the dough.... It'd be kind of a nice little show-off-the-graphics game to have and I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the Mercenaries modes on both other games (much more out of 5's than 4's)

Re: First Impressions: Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition

SwerdMurd

yup--as expected, controls are the killer. Will not be buying this version--more than twice as expensive as the Super version for PS3...just not worth it imo.

@Limelight - the actual game was originally an arcade game on much, much worse hardware than a 360 or a PS3. The PS3 and 360 versions barely have to break a sweat to make it work...and given the smaller resolution (and worse framerate) it really isn't too monumental an achievement.

Re: Review: Doc Clock: The Toasted Sandwich of Time (WiiWare)

SwerdMurd

Ugh...I read a couple of those other linked reviews, then some other reviews by the same reviewers....awful. Uneducated and awful. I'm much more apt to believe/trust this 2/10 than the few 7/10s/ 8/10s i just read. The other "reviews" sounded more like positive advertisements for the game...I think it was the complete lack of depth.

I also don't have a hard time believing that the Wiiware version is infinitely glitchier.

Re: Nintendo's 3DS Events - We Want Your Questions!

SwerdMurd

All my questions concern online, and are more requests for clarification than questions.

I just want to know what the online structure is going to be--namely, if we're gonna have accounts tied to our Nintendo purchases...with names (YES!) or if we're sticking with turbo-archaic friend-code systems (NO!), and also if all of our DSiWare apps are going to be transferrable (I know some are--I wanna make sure there aren't any restrictions).

I think they already stated that average game pricing was gonna be ~$50...more in line with current-gen console releases than handhelds.

Re: Rumour: The D in DSi May Soon Stand for "Discontinued"

SwerdMurd

This is almost the same timing as the way the GB Micro worked in the Advance days.....granted, the DSi got a bit more fanfare, but the timing was awkward, late-in-life, and it seemed to get killed before too much of the world really felt the ripple of its presence.

Re: Fighters can be Voyeurs too in Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition

SwerdMurd

I just don't see the appeal of this version of this game....do people really enjoy playing 2d fighters by themselves? On d-pads and with buttons? The only reason I buy any fighting game is to play it with other actual people present, and preferably with an arcade fighting stick to emulate the real thing. While the 3d presentation would probably be a cool novelty for the first hour, I just can't see putting more than a few hours into a handheld fighting game...I can't play DS or PSP for more than about an hour without my left hand starting to hurt--especially playing demanding games (PSP Ys games send my hands into convulsions in under a half hour in most cases).

@14 - Use an SNES controller, then use any of the DS system controllers and tell me they're as comfortable. D-pads are stickier (especially on DSi), buttons are smaller and don't press quite as well, and shoulder buttons click awfully and are even harder to time along with D-pad movements than regular shoulder buttons. And why on earth, if talking about best playing/controlling SF games, did you leave out the entirety of the Alpha series and SF3? If you're gonna make grandiose claims I'd expect a little series familiarity...

Re: Rumour: 3DS will be Region-Locked According to Nintendo

SwerdMurd

Affects less than 1% of prospective owners...I doubt they care. I hope people that import realize how small a minority of gamers they really are...not that they're doing anything wrong, just that Nintendo doesn't really care about them.

If you're the type of person that even follows games that aren't released in your region, chances are most decisions are made without you in mind. Sad fact of life.

Re: 3DS Battery Life Revealed

SwerdMurd

i'm not a big fan of this whole diminishing battery life per charge thing we've got going on. This seems much closer to the PSP's battery life...which is one of my biggest criticisms of the handheld.

Re: Nintendo Download: 7th January 2011 (Europe)

SwerdMurd

Man I gotta disagree with the Arcade GnG being harder than the NES one....the NES physics were so much choppier and harder to use....Arc GnG plays almost identically to Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Playing it with a d-pad/buttons is actually not too bad...

Unlimited continues or not, I find it easier. Granted, by level 3 they're both pretty nasty

Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - January 2011

SwerdMurd

@StarBoy - i was thinking that too...last time I recall DQ 1 or 2 coming out in a new form was the Gameboy Color doublepack back around 2000... I'd kinda like the originals on VC despite owning all the carts (yes, even 4 )

Re: Zelda: Skyward Sword is Half Finished, says Miyamoto

SwerdMurd

that reminds me--I still have to give 3D Zelda series an honest chance again. My goal is to play through all of them (starting with Ocarina) in order so hopefully I can appreciate this offshoot of the series more....to date only the top-down ones have ever held my attention to completion... There's gotta be something to most of the rest of the world liking them though.

Re: 3DS Game Cards Could Reach a Mighty 8GB

SwerdMurd

8 gigs would be quite nice....given how much PSP games can already do with 1.whatever gigs....8 is pretty much a dual-layered DVD...that said, given that it isn't quite as strong as the Wii, I doubt many games (except in cases of 3D FMV-heavy games) are even gonna come close.

Re: Lend Your Support to Get Renegade Kid's MUDDS on DSiWare

SwerdMurd

I thought the same thing. I was getting all psyched up to play crappy old text-RPGs again just like when I first got the internet...

That said, this game looks kinda slick. If it released as a 500 point DSiWare game, I'd prob buy it (if anything else, due to the fact that it's really the only game in its genre)

Re: Features: Don't Touch my Samus: Metroid's Controversial Turn

SwerdMurd

Just give me a real battle system next time, please...and a bit less linear. There were definitely some good moments, but upon trying to play it a second time I was bored to tears almost immediately...it's got this almost offensively easy difficulty that randomly spikes during any room where you need to rely on the gimpy sensemove...making hard mode (no powerups) one of the worst gaming experiences available. Run from room to room fighting monotonous battles hoping an enemy doesn't no-response kill you directly out of a sensemove or after a head jump (which was itself an iffy mechanic).

Just more work next time...and give us a planet instead of a ship. I honestly did enjoy the ensemble-cast presentation...if only there were some more interesting characters in it.
