Re: Waluigi First Graced Us With His Presence 20 Years Ago

SirKero

@jsw-8 @georgesdandre
In Japan, it's a great name, but sadly it doesn't translate.

Warui means bad or evil. Combine that with Luigi (phonetically, Ruiji) and you've got a mix of the names Wario and Luigi along with a play-on-words that spells out his only distinguishing characteristic: he's an evil Luigi. How could they pass that up?? ...in Japan that is. In other countries it comes across a little stupid and more than a little lame. Ah well.

On another note.. how does one pronounce Гuigi?

Edit: Sorry @Moroboshi876 I didn't see that you'd already explained it!

Re: Reggie Fils-Aimé Joins Rogue Games As A Strategic Advisor

@johnvboy Nah, Peach is fine...

My favorite stupid fan theory: Peach and Bowser are in love, but it's not socially acceptable. The kidnapping thing is just to keep up appearances. For helping out the act, Mario gets a kiss on the nose, time in the spotlight, and a bunch of cash. Everybody wins!

I mean... except for all the poor innocent baddies stomped along the way.

@Lord I don't get it either, but a lot of people seem to do it! Some people like to stay busy I guess. If I ever get to retire, I'm finally going to get through my massive game/movie/book backlogs. Or die first, whichever.

Re: Hasbro Celebrates Super Mario's 35th Anniversary With Monopoly And Jenga

SirKero

@RustedHero I think you're absolutely right that case by case is the way to go! A lot of these license tie-ins (or cash-ins) add new ideas that aren't well thought out or fun to play (that Mario Jenga looks like one of them). I should have said: when new mechanics are done right i much prefer it over a vanilla clone, but when it's done wrong it can really detract from the regular game.

@TJM I would love to see those happen! I could see a Metroid theme working very well in something like the Doom tabletop games. They've got exploration, equipment upgrades, ammo management, and nasty surprises around every corner.

@mr_benn GFTH looks fantastic! Even without a Luigi theme I think I'm going to have to find a copy. Thanks for cluing me in to it!

Re: Hasbro Celebrates Super Mario's 35th Anniversary With Monopoly And Jenga

SirKero

@RustedHero Hard disagree for me. I already have the classic version (sometimes several), so why waste shelf space with a themed edition if it doesn't bring something new?

I'm incredibly fond of Lord of the Rings Risk, which not only has a completely different map, but has all new elements to represent the journey of the ring. Also Risk 2210 where I can go to the moon, or blow up large parts of the map. And then there's Harry Potter Clue which keeps things chaotic with constantly shifting doorways and secret passages. I've yet to find a special/weird Monopoly I really like, though U-build and Cheater's editions had some interesting gimmicks.

That said, I personally don't think this Monopoly brings enough new ideas to the table. I'm more inclined to check out the Mario Kart edition with its weird racing mechanic. Is it good? I dunno... But it's different!

Un/fortunately, most of the special editions out there are just unadulterated reskins so you have a lot of options without mucking around with new mechanics. with over 2200 editions (https://worldofmonopoly.com/) I'm sure at least one of them is a vanilla game with a Mario facelift!

Re: Hasbro Celebrates Super Mario's 35th Anniversary With Monopoly And Jenga

SirKero

Ah phooie, I was hoping they'd bring back Donkey Kong Jenga 'cause that actually looked pretty good.

I am excited to see some actual thought put in to Monopoly this time, with special currency and places to buy instead of characters. Peach used to go for $220...

How many Nintendo/Mario editions of Monopoly does this make though?

Re: Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition Launches In Japan This August

SirKero

I'm less worried about local release date, more about local multiplayer. Last we heard this was looking like online multi only, or possibly local wi-fi with each player using their own Switch and copy of the game.
I loved this game on GC but it will be a hard pass if I have to get 4 copies of the game just so I can sit with my family and play it. Getting 4 friends together each with their own GBAs was hard enough...

Re: Dead Cells' Bestiary Update Is Now Live On Switch, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

SirKero

@Dragonslacker1, you're pretty close to the mark for me at least. I think it does involve a certain thrill-seeking masochism. Another big part for me is the thrill of the unknown... It's the same reason I love to pick random in Smash, shuffled stages, items on. I never know what I'll get!

Pure roguelikes don't have any permanent progression, once you're dead that's it, you start again from nothing. Rogue"light"s give you a little something to show for yourself, mostly in terms of potential upgrades each run, but sometimes they're generous enough to give you a permanent health boost or a new skill. Either way they tend to expect most of the progression to come from you the player getting a little better and learning a little more each time.

@N8tiveT3ch I feel you! I mean, I've gone as far as I can with no Boss Cells, but even the first bump in difficulty is killing me!

I'm definitely jumping back in for the update! I guess Nova Drift will have to sit out for a bit.

Re: Video: This Incredible Fan-Made Trailer Reimagines Zelda As A Paper Mario Game

SirKero

@Heavyarms55 Coming from kind of an opposite end of the spectrum, I think I can uniquely appreciate where you're coming from.

My favorite Final Fantasy games are Crystal Chronicles, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Secret of Mana... all games that are definitely not normal JRPGs (and Mana even dropped the FF name after 1 entry). I love all kinds of things about the traditional FF games, but the gameplay just isn't my style.

That said, I can see why a Zelda RPG would be incredibly appealing, if you love the look, the feel, and the content of Zelda but RPG gameplay IS more your style. Heck, even though I'm not normally a fan of the genre, If it ended up anything like Mario RPG or Lufia I'd be all over it! We've already seen proof that some action and puzzle mechanics can work really well in an RPG.

The only reason I can think of against an RPG is that it's too easy of a fit, and Nintendo usually prefers to think a lot further outside the box. Mario as an RPG was a big surprise, Mario in X-COM style even more-so! Likewise Zelda as beat-em-up, or an indie rhythm roguelike is totally unexpected. After Hyrule Warriors and Cadence of Hyrule though, I'm hopeful that we'll see a whole lot more out-of-genre spin-offs!

Re: Introducing Dongii, The Dinkiest Nintendo Switch Dock We Ever Did See

SirKero

@holygeez03 Yeah, this "Dongii" (really??) looks bigger than Genki's as well.

Edit: I hadn't seen the breakaway thing yet. That looks... cool? This could be a great little gadget and I'm glad there are some more options, but I'm still not convinced this thing won't be bricking Switches. Heck, the only reason I halfway trust the Covert Dock is that one of their engineers is the one behind this awesome write-up explaining why 3rd party stuff causes bricking in the first place https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/ckaiiv/an_engineers_pov_on_the_3rd_party_dock_switch/
