Original Article (Thu 23rd Apr, 2020 10:00 BST): Another free update for Dead Cells is headed our way next month, and Motion Twin and Evil Empire have now released patch notes detailing everything we can expect to arrive alongside it.
The update, called the 'Bestiary Update', went live on PC yesterday. Switch owners will have to be a little bit more paitent, but it sounds like it'll be worth the wait. Here's an easy-to-follow version of all the changes:
Dead Cells - Bestiary Update
- Six brand new enemies await players
- Three of the enemies are biome specific and three are found throughout various levels at different Boss Cells
- Eleven new affixes on active skills
- Eight new normal affixes including ice, fire, bleed or poison, grenades arrows and more
- Three new starred affixes including oil and fire spreading around when a deployable trap is destroyed, pushing enemies around you when the effect of hte used active ends and extended duration on powers like Wings, Crow and Smokebomb
- Two new items
- Crowbar - a fast brutality weapon that crits after breaking a door or a breakable prop
- Portable Door: allows you to bring a door with you (covering your back while you take care of the mobs in front of you and allowing for an elegant stun effect when you decide to turn around)
- The Bad Seed addition from earlier this year has received new lore rooms and secrets for the Arboretum and the Morass, as well as new mobs to re-balance the bestiary of the level.
- Three new outfits cap off the major content updates
- Two are linked to the secrets and lore of The Bad Seed DLC, and one is available for everyone that can rise up to the ultimate challenge.
An even more exhaustive list of changes and updates is also available on the official Dead Cells website. We warn you, though, it's a very lengthy read.
Think this will make you jump right back in for more Dead Cells action? Tell us below.

All I want is a good discount or a demo so I don’t feel robbed if I buy it and don’t like it
Am over 250 hours on this... but 4BC stopped me dead! And Animal Crossing took over. 😊 I definitely will go back to it, though... it really is an amazing game.
I played for a bit after the last update and will maybe check this out if I can find the time at some point. Really neat roguelite but for some reason after a couple of days I always feel like I've had enough and I move onto something else. Maybe because unlocking things feels pretty grindy.
over 250 hours on this. I've managed to complete it once. I get to last boss on BC1 and i just get ruined everytime. Still a great game to go back to every now and then though. Well worth the price
@BenAV I was just about to say how the current discount may tempt me in, as the devs seem to be doing a great job at continually supporting this game. However your comment of it feeling quite grindy has put me off somewhat. Can you elaborate?
I need to start playing this game again, I bought the physical verison and put 20 or so hours in and haven't touched it again despite quite enjoying it. They have added a ridiculous amount of stuff since I last played.
God I love this game, and these devs.
@Kiz3000 To unlock a new item you need to find its blueprint and then buy it using the cells you unlock from playing. I ended up with a big list of blueprints but collecting cells to slowly unlock them felt like it was taking forever. It would be faster if I was just better at the game though I'm sure. It's still a really good game though.
I liked it, but this game really showed me I hate permadeath. I got to the boss at BC4, but was never able to kill it... and that run all the way until you reach the boss each time killed the fun for me eventually... now i stay clear of every game with permadeath, cause this experience still hurts me as a completionist... such a shame I never got to see the ‘real boss’.
I loved this game so much when it came out. The updates make me tempted to come back to it but there is so much to play.
It might be something good to return to in between longer games, or if I’ve finished a game a few days before a new release.
@Kiz3000 you could try to unlock everything, but that’s not the point of the game I think. On the contrary, if you unlock everything each run could be harder because you won’t get the weapons you like the most. So is it grindy? Well, not really.
@sandman89 wasn't it free for a week a while back
One of my top 5 games ever and I've been playing games for over 35 years, right back to the BBC Micro in the early 80s! The kind game I think "I'll play it for an hour then go to bed", then 4 hours later the sun is rising!
@somebread It was only free as a week trial to Japanese online accounts. I assume you could have just switched regions to give it a go, but it missed most news outlets because it was Nintendo Japan offering it, nowhere else.
Cool, I love Dead Cells, so it’s always nice to get another free update!
Dead Cells is superb. I haven't played it for a while but I've been meaning to go back to it. I'll hang off until this update arrives.
@PlayedNSlayed
Honestly, to get good at the game in an efficient manner I think that save scumming helps a lot. I ended up playing a lot on custom game mode so I could limit the RNG of the weapon drops and focus more on the game and getting better at learning the different enemies moves without being shunted back to the very start after a mistake.
I'm massively average at the game but playing on custom modes was a lot of fun and generally adjusting the difficulty helps a lot.
@mctrials23 That's actually worth a try. I'll give that a go see if it helps. cheers 👍
@somebread not that I know of 🤷🏻♂️
One of my favorite games on Switch. It's not one I can play for hours, but I'll sit down for a couple of runs once or twice a week to the tune of 50-ish hours now. I love how much work Motion Twin have continued to put into it.
To me it does not feel grindy at all. The things you unlock with cells are not massive powerups. The real trick in the game is learning where you have to go to get the non-persistent upgrades during a run, which make a far bigger difference in how your run will play out. So it's more about learning the game than a grind.
I'm not super good at the game, mind you. I've never gotten anywhere near a complete run. But I have lot of fun.
@sandman89 I mean you could just download it on PC and try it and then buy if you like, this is what I do if there are no demos, rules be damned!
@Jokerwolf what do you mean? Where from? Free?
@sandman89 Torrent sites mostly.
@JasmineDragon
Have taken the same approach; 50+ hours, beaten just once. My only wish is that you could unlock a 'weapons cabinet' or something to stash in the opening lobby that you can customize with, like, 4 melee, bow and shield weapons each. While I have grown to appreciate the game 'forcing' you to try new weapons, pairings and strategies with each randomized run, I just feel like an old man when it comes to the game's gear at this point: "I know what I like, now just GIVE IT TO ME!!" As mentioned above, it can be frustrating when you don't really have a choice in regularly, continuously unlocking weapons (when So. MANY. SUUUUUCK!!).
Beginning a new run, anytime I see those damned Jesus (Leonidas?) Sandals, I RAGE restart...!
@CodyDogg Same here! I hate the Spartan Sandals!
It would be nice if you could edit your weapon selection, at least be able to lock out certain starter weapons (cough sandals).
@Jokerwolf - Why buy the game if you already have it?
@sandman89 it’s actually pretty simple. Do you like rogue-like? Do you not mind playing from the start when you die? Are easily addicted?
If you answer yes to these questions, you should buy it. I think it’s one of the best rogue-like games out there together with Rogue legacy.
@sandman89
You could do what I did - bought it, didn't like it, and then sold it.
I need to dedicate more time to this game...I still can't beat the base game.
I liked a lot about this game, but too hard in the end. I do not know this rogue genre but I was gutted when I died and I couldn’t use my equipment again, I had to find it randomly. Genuine question for the people who have put in tons of hours, but have only managed to complete a run once or twice. Is that the fun of the game? Even though you have played tons and are familiar with the game, is that the rush that u mite not get to the end again? X x
@Dragonslacker1, you're pretty close to the mark for me at least. I think it does involve a certain thrill-seeking masochism. Another big part for me is the thrill of the unknown... It's the same reason I love to pick random in Smash, shuffled stages, items on. I never know what I'll get!
Pure roguelikes don't have any permanent progression, once you're dead that's it, you start again from nothing. Rogue"light"s give you a little something to show for yourself, mostly in terms of potential upgrades each run, but sometimes they're generous enough to give you a permanent health boost or a new skill. Either way they tend to expect most of the progression to come from you the player getting a little better and learning a little more each time.
@N8tiveT3ch I feel you! I mean, I've gone as far as I can with no Boss Cells, but even the first bump in difficulty is killing me!
I'm definitely jumping back in for the update! I guess Nova Drift will have to sit out for a bit.
@SirKero Cool name. Have still got the game I think, will try again one day. Platforming and combat seemed very polished, and I love the idea of infinite replay ability. I think I got to the third area several times, but that seemed to be my wall! I think I then moved on to something else but enjoyed my 10 hours or so. Happy gaming xx
Well, time to jump back into Dead Cells again!
@jimbob298 yes so true. Its that extremely rare single player experience that you can just come back to day after day after you've beaten it, thinking oh I'll do one run and then you end up playing for two or three hours. Definitely among my favorite games ever.
This game mainly showed me how much I dislike roguelike games.
Everything else about the game is great. It's just that every run feels the same and most of the time you keep dying at the same sections.
My most played switch game.Can’t wait to jump back in.
@Dragonslacker1 I struggled a lot in the beginning, but now I have gotten the basic finish of the game several times.
As you play through the game and put cells into unlocks and upgrades different strategies unlock together with your skills improving. You eventually find combos that work with your playstyle and some times luck out on what items you find on your way through.
It's important to enjoy the experience as a potentially short run where you only get minor progress, but slowly get better. Exploring the game and finding different strategies and secrets with each run.
Working on unlocks that help you stay alive is great in the beginning, and also using the tactics items/traps and boosting their damage can work as a good approach as you are starting out.
I feel I'm only avarage at the game, but I still enjoy throwing in a few runs at it from time to time, because the combat and movement is so fun and flows so nice.
EDIT: Also to those who gave out in the early days, i think they have done a lot of tweaks to the difficulty curve since then, so its worth giving it another go, if you felt like the game suddenly spiked to much for you. (i know it did for me in the beginning, but i struggled through)
@sandman89 You will like it
