Re: Capcom Intends To Continue "Re-Activating Dormant IPs"

I remember playing this one Capcom game as a kid where you play as this psychotic little blue robot that goes crazy and starts murdering all the other cute robots who are just going about their lives. His sociopathic master Dr. Light justifies it by mutterings of “A.I. is the future and also think of the shareholders, something something job creators…”

You could choose what order to do the murdering in, it was cool.

Re: Poll: Will There Be A September Nintendo Direct This Year?

My uncle who works at Nintendo said he saw Mr. Miyamoto and Mr. Aonuma using the Xerox machine to make copies of their naughty bits after hours last night. Apparently those images will be the only thing shown at the September direct, because they hate the leakers and decided we all need to be punished.

I almost edited my previous response after posting it, and I apologize for implying you were “blind” due to nostalgia! I actually wasn’t trying to pick on you personally. I agree that hyperbole can get out of hand on here, I’m certainly not innocent of that, but it’s only hecause we’re all passionate about the subject. I appreciate a rigorous discussion, and your perspective as a musician, so hopefully no hard feelings!

I will say that, while Sugiyama is undoubtedly talented, I am unfamiliar with his work outside DQ. So while I too appreciate classical music, I guess my impression with DQ music (and again, I love the games) is that it has grown a bit stale and could stand to be iterated on a bit. Not advocating to throw out the classical style by any means! I’m open to having my perspective changed on this matter; but right now I can only go by my experience with DQ 11 which is basically: classic game, tedious soundtrack for vast swaths of gameplay time, punctuated by some pretty nice new tracks, but nothing I wanted stuck in my head. Anyway, thanks for the response!

@Ljink96 It’s not “slander” against an artist to criticize their work (though the choice of that word is ironic considering the guy was a war crimes denier). I speak as someone who has adored Dragon Quest since its first western release in 1989. It was perhaps my favorite NES game as a kid and my brother and i obsessed over the first three sequels. So my love for the series goes way back, and I have a far greater fondness for the whole of the DQ canon than for (modern) Final Fantasy.

However, I’m not so blinded by nostalgia to think the music is beyond criticism. I’ve played through DQ 11 twice, and wasn’t halfway through the first time before I turned down the ost in the settings. That shrill, clanging headache of an overworld theme haunts my dreams, my disappointment equalled only by the brazen recycling of so many previous games’ tracks. I respect the opinion of anyone who loves 11’s music, and god knows I’m glad somebody does (there are a few good new pieces in there). But I find far more enjoyment in the depth and variety of tunes in any number of jrpgs, be they FF, Xenoblade, Ys or Mario & Luigi, even as I don’t enjoy those series as much overall. Whatever compliments Uematsu has thrown at Sugiyama’s work, I’m sure he’s too much of a gentleman to suggest otherwise. But I feel Uematsu is far and away the more masterful composer, electric guitars or no, if only for the ways he’s grown and evolved as an artist over the years while DQ’s music has stagnated.

Constructive criticism is one way we can help that which we love to improve, and those who critique a piece of art don’t deserve to be shot down with accusations of slander. There is plenty to both appreciate and criticize in DQ’s musical history, and both perspectives can be valid at the same time.
