Splendid game still after 20 years! If you haven't played it, you must. You won't believe it's 20 years old. Much of the gameplay Is timeless and that's a testament to the excellent programmers who worked on it. Graphics still hold up - a rarity for the N64 - and Grant Kirkhope's music is sublime!
The games themselves aren't awful awful. The original Fighter's Destiny even made the World Cup of N64 Games on Twitter! It didn't get through to round of 16, however.
I've been playing through GoldFinger 64 and thryve done a great job in recreating that GoldenEye feel. If you're still an N64 fan like myself this should be experienced and appreciated for the ridiculous amount of hard work that seems to have gone into it. The level of detail for what it is impresses.
This could delay a N64 Mini until 2019. Two theories: they want to drum up business for a N64 mini for a release nearer Christmas 2018. Or they are working hard to secure Rare titles such as GoldenEye as they know everyone will want that. By releasing more stock of the other two, it buys time for getting the N64 Mini right and not a second- best library of filler games.
For $20 I will take the gamble and get one of these. I can at least review it for the N64 Memories blog. I have 4 controllers so if it doesn't meet standard, it'll just be a nice momento.
@ThanosReXXX Rush 2049 is a favourite alternative to F Zero for me. TGR1&2 would be welcomed too. I do feel the N64 has enough good games other than Rare's Masterpieces.
@ThanosReXXX good points made there - yes omitting 1080 was an error in hindsight. Cruis'n is on there as Nintendo published it and might include it. If Nintendo managed to strike a deal with Microsoft then I'd be more than happy to rewrite my predicted list haha!
@flashboy licensing is a problem. The one Rare game Nintendo do have the IP for is DK64 which did see a VC release on Wii U. So that could potentially be on a future N64 Mini.
I feel like Nintendo are mostly releasing the same N64 games to the Wii U VC that they did on the Wii. Now, I don't own a Wii U but if I did, I wouldn't rebuy them; I'd want new releases. There are plenty of Nintendo IPs from the N64 not released + few third party games. That would interest me more to see (as much as I LOVE MM).
It's a significant landmark and should be celebrated more than it probably will be. I still enjoy the DS version and would be interested to see a HD version too one day.
Surely the perfect question to end on for me! My earliest memory was going to a Toys R Us after school (year 8) and seeing the N64 in action. Crowding round its N64 station and watching someone playing Super Mario 64, being absolutely mesmerised by what I was seeing. I was sold on it and have loved it ever since.
I am still playing this via my 3DS and really enjoy it. For me, it gave a fresh injection of fun to an established classic. I can't remember the name of it, but the mini game where you drag black and pink bombs is still addictive!
DKR has always been my preferred kart racer for the N64; I am a rare N64 gamer who doesn't much like Mario Kart 64 unless it's 4 player racing. I preferred the Snes original and many of the subsequent releases.
I'd like to see the N64's 20th anniversary marked in some way. Another notable 3DS remake would go down well - F-Zero X for example. Or a Wii U VC game from Rare! Both seriously unlikely but one can dream...
Happy New Year everyone. I too hope Nintendo do something special to mark the N64's 20th anniversary although it's reassuring that NL will I think it'll be an exciting year to be a Nintendo fan all round.
@MussakkuLaden I think the 64-word limit has left my final line a little ambiguous. I felt the storyline of OoT wasn't as ambitious as MM. Not the game as a whole.
Superb platformer showing Rare were a fantastic developer even before their string of N64 hits. Losing their ability to produce games like this is still a big miss to the industry.

Re: GameCube Classic Luigi's Mansion Rises From The Grave On 3DS This Year
I think N64 remakes have been better suited to 3DS and NGC games should go to Switch.
I would have liked to have seen remakes of Paper Mario, Wave Race, Mario 64, 1080 etc.
Re: Feature: What We Want From Nintendo In 2018
2019 for a N64 Classic Mini and GB version for 2018. That's my prediction.
Re: Random: These N64 Box Art Covers Have Not Aged Well
Fighter's Destiny and its sequel were decent beat 'em ups. But, yeah, the box art is dodgy!

Re: Nintendo Isn't Ready To Talk About Any More "Classic" Console Releases
I think a Game Boy Mini might be next. Why? If a N64 Mini is to be successful, it needs Rare games. Nintendo might spend time aiming to get some.
Re: Feature: Ten 3DS Games That Are Perfect for Halloween
I included Majora's Mask on my N64 list. http://n64memories.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/n64-games-to-revisit-this-halloween.html?m=1
It's a superbly haunting game because of the sense of doom Termina is feeling. Great choice NL!

Hahaha - definitely very 90s! It's inspired me to do a blog post with links to other similar N64 videos.

Re: Nintendo Confirms That Upcoming European Release of F-Zero X is the 60Hz Version
Great choice by Nintendo - the most superior version of the N64's best racing game. It deserves the attention it's getting.

I've done the same for the N64!

Re: Discuss: What Next For The Nintendo 64?
@electrolite77 A great list. If Rare came into play, it'd be a challenge to pick the best 30.

@thehoppypoppy Thanks. It's a realistic one I think.
Re: Discuss: What Next For The Nintendo 64?

Re: Game Boy Color Game 15 Years In The Making Finally Sees The Light Of Day
Gives possible hope to other unfinished games being released for other consoles.
Re: Video: Digital Foundry Puts GoldenEye and Perfect Dark to the Test on N64
@ToneDeath I agree. This was mid-1990s technology, of course the frame rates weren't as good. Focusing on that as a negative seems futile to me.
Re: Video: Digital Foundry Puts GoldenEye and Perfect Dark to the Test on N64
I never knew a 360 version had been in the works.
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's NES Classic Edition is Just One Way to Revolutionise the Virtual Console

Re: Nintendo of Europe Unveils Over 40 Discounts for eShop 5 Year Anniversary Sale
@VanillaLake Thanks - tomorrow I think I'll be buying DX and Seasons.
Re: Nintendo of Europe Unveils Over 40 Discounts for eShop 5 Year Anniversary Sale
I've got enough credit for 2 of those last 3 Zelda games. DX is a given so which would you recommend: Ages or Seasons?
Re: Five More 3DS Games Will Join the European Nintendo Selects Range in June
Ocarina of Time 3D! Finally!! Good timing with the N64's 20th anniversary in Japan (23rd) although probably just a coincidence.
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th May (Europe)
I'm genuinely not sure why Zelda: OoT 3D has never had a discount for 3DS. Could anyone offer a possible explanation?
Re: The Nintendo Selects Range Brings Some Sales Success in the UK Charts
I still want to see more 3DS Selects releases - more in 2016 do people imagine?

Any news on more Nintendo Selects releases for Europe? We deserve more titles this year...
