Ok, to be clear, I think that these updates are meant for hackers, for example those that appeared in Mario Kart 8 (although it's mainly a single hacker: http://prntscr.com/9o9faa and https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYQHAAABAAAEVHhoROIang). Nintendo usually creates new protection measures so at least for some days the hackers must circumvent them and don't post hacked times nor participate in worldwide races. I wonder if this is linked with Nintendo Network maintenance in order to more effectively block hackers...
@efaulk84 Unfortunately no, like all other SNES Wii U VC games, the manual is the digital one accessed through the "HOME" menu. Nintendo started with the manual scans on the GBA games and then went on with the DS and N64 games. I too would like the scans, the original manual are beautiful and are a source of precious information which is not always easy to find.
@RantingThespian Remember what I have written above. Both SMRPG directors and the executive producer on Square part now work at AlphaDream. Even Yoko now compose music for the Mario & Luigi series! At the moment, I don't even know how many of the original SMRPG developers work at Square Enix! And to clarify, one of the directors of Super Mario RPG doesn't intend to make a sequel soon: http://kotaku.com/dont-count-on-a-new-super-mario-rpg-any-time-soon-989543461
Well, actually, now we should call the developers AlphaDream/Square, as SMRPG's two directors and the executive producer on Square's part now work at AlphaDream, with the external help of Super Mario RPG's composer Yoko Shimomura!
@GoldenGamer88 To be honest, in the second part of Paper Jam you don't really have to save Peach...
and the third Paper Mario has a graphical style much different from the first two, with many new characters having that polygon-based style!
@the101 If you watch his talk page on the Wiki you will see that he sent proof that it was him. I hope someone will ask for clarifications about that Larry Koopa story.
@zool Honestly, many Battle Cards are so overpowered that you miss something if you use them (read: the fun of having a challenging battle)... especially those awful level down cards that perpetually nerf the bosses and can be used multiple times too... so I don't think you miss anything without amiibo, maybe your battles will be more challenging and way funnier!
@Tempestryke Well, the Japanese SMB3 manual says that too and the most ironic fact is that in the just released VC version of SMA4 the scans of the original Japanese manual were released as well and in them the original story that says that the Koopalings are Bowser's children, too!
@scamander "Forgive us Bowser... I mean, Master Bowser", which is similar to what is said in the Russian version. The French version, on the other hand is a direct translation of the Japanese version, so it says "Ma.. Master Bowser", I'm still waiting for the Italian version and the Spanish version, because it seems that the European translators worked this time on a slightly different script than the Japanese one, as other cases of lines absent in the Japanese version but present in the European versions were found.
Case in point, while in the first battle with Ludwig and Larry in the Japanese version Larry doesn't call Ludwig "brother", in the German version he calls him "bigger brother" (and all the other Euroepan version say "brother" or even "little brother" in the French one!), so the German version actually conforms to the original depiction of the Koopalings!
@Spin You know, Bowser Jr. couldn't ride anything in Mario Kart 8, so he went riding a horse instead... as for Larry Koopa, well, he just loves riding bikes, to the point that he is one of the two characters with a separate glider trick when riding inward drifting bikes! Evidently the most important point for him anyway is riding, so there he goes with horses! On the other hand, Eggman got bored of mechanical things and went organical this time, while Blaze took "Right Here, Ride On" a bit too literally...
@Socar I think you are right, since at least SEGA still mentions this version: https://sega.jp/topics/151209_arcade_1/ This silence, though, is quite surprising nonetheless.
It is no longer coming on Wii U, the official site (https://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/bgxj/index.html) clearly state that it is "available on Nintendo 3DS" and not on Wii U. So, unless they just stopped working on it altogether, this could be the first NX launch title confirmed!
@Churchy: Ah, ok! In my case, both series have a special place in my heart, so I don't have to worry! Of course, compared to the first two Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG looks more "conventional", but it's also the first Mario RPG made and it has its own personality, distinct from the ones of the two current series, so I would still give it a shot!
@zool Honestly, if we consider that the development time was short (pretty much 2 years since Dream Team), that the Dream team engine was reused, that Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is the first Mario RPG that doesn't introduce new characters nor enemies (even Sticker Star introduced Tower Power Pokey and some other bosses!) and that the settings are the common ones as well, not to say that we have Bowser kidnapping Peach again, the scores this game got just show that the people at AlphaDream are really skilled developers! Unfortunately, in the marketing material the shortcomings were evident while the positive aspects (e.g. the characters all having a more interesting personality this time, many of the often talked-about problems of Dream Team being addressed and so on) were not, and since Sticker Star appears to have left quite a few people burned, I would say that there were quite a few reasons why not many people dared to buy this game.
@Churchy I would suggest not to compare it to The Thousand-Year Door: part of the staff of Super Mario RPG, including the directors (Chihiro Fujioka and Yoshihiko Maekawa) one of the executive producers (Tetsuo Mizuno) and the composer (Yoko Shimomura) are currently working on the Mario & Luigi series (even though the name clearly implies that even this series wants to differentiate itself from Super Mario RPG), while the Paper Mario series is developed by a totally different team.
@Danrenfroe2016 @Raien Well, at least the 30th anniversary books (Encyclopedia Super Mario bros. and Super Mario Memorial Book) include both Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2 in the titles pertaining to the Super Mario series. The Encyclopedia even has Daisy and Wario in the "main characters" pages! That being said, I'm surprised that Yusuke Oshino completely forgot about Super Mario Land, since even the final fight with Tatanga is in shooter mode!
Regarding more bosses for Super Mario Maker, we can look at the bosses in the 4 titles:
Super Mario Bros.: Bowser
Super Mario Bros. 3: Boom Boom, the Koopalings and Bowser
Super Mario World: Reznors, Big Boo, the Koopalings and Bowser
New Super Mario Bros. U: Boom Boom, Sumo Bro, Kamek, the Koopalings, Bowser Jr. and Bowser
I'd say that the Koopalings are a no-brainer, though Boom Boom would also be nice (and maybe even easier to do than the Koopalings), so if the Koopalings require too much development time, at least him should be in.
Finally, slopes are already introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3 and the first stages of both Super Mario World and New Super Mario bros. U use them, so there is a point in having them, both from a gameplay and level design point of view.
Of course slopes + ice + penguing suit would open wonderful possibilities in creating DKC-minecart-like levels!
Sadly, I suspect that adding slopes can be quite complex from a level editor point of view so I suspect we won't see them in Super Mario Maker (and if really slopes are not implemented I don't think we should blame the developers, we don't know how the underlying engine works)...
I think Nintendo has done the worst marketing possible for Paper Jam, presenting it as essentially a Mario & Luigi game without an interesting story, with the very same settings and without new characters, while reusing the Dream Team engine and using as little references to the Mario & Luigi series and the Paper Mario series as possible. And who knows, maybe in the intentions of Nintendo, the game had to be like that.
Really, I feel bad for AlphaDream because looking at gameplay videos it is evident that they tried to push and get around those boundaries.
Xenoblade Chronicles X outselling its predecessor that was released on a console with pretty much a 10x install base is still good news, I think. It's Paper Jam that is sad news, although honestly I think it was always presented as a game with no new original characters, settings and story and with as little references to the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series as possible, so it was expected that people wouldn't see it as a good game to play or even support, even though developers at AlphaDream really appear to have done a great job at working around these limitations.
@zool Well, reviews sites cannot give a Nintendo game a high score because it's from Nintendo or because they must help sales, this is simply awful toward the readers.
@Grumblevolcano <Tin foil hat> Remember that The Game Awards 2015 are in the 3rd of December, before this show, and that Nintendo will make announcements at the Awards...</Tin Foil Hat>
@Spin MK8 is Wii U's best selling game with a greater than 50% attachment ratio, furthermore Nintendo sells a Wii U + MK8 bundle, so it is interested in promoting it. The only strange thing is that, as far as we know, Nintendo stopped supporting it last May.
It's nice to see the MK8 Miiverse stamps fully colored, the PRIMA guide also revealed that they very likely come from vector art, so it would be very nice to see a crazy high-res colored version of them! The Bowser, Yoshi and Koopalings one are particularly interesting for me!
Even though the UK market might not be that big, I'm surprised that Mario Kart 8, pretty much no longer actively supported since May, is still selling well (better than Splatoon, actually, so I'm wondering if those are all bundle sales or if it even manages to sell retail versions). Should Nintendo reconsider the support schedule, at least of future Mario Kart games?
@Peach64 Yes, Link is left handed, so this is the GameCube version, at least in this sense the port makes sense, as the GC version is the original one (with left handed Link), but is very hard to find.
I would really want two more Mario Kart 8 DLC packs to have 64 tracks and give sense to the "Toad Polar Expedition 2014-2015" sign and that final image in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Bowser Jr. in MK8 Mario Circuit), but I definitely shouldn't count on that...
I think the list of this article is good, but I would expect also Super Mario Maker DLCs and also announcements related to Pikmin 4, unless it's a mobile/NX game (and its absence would be almost a confirmation...)
I think the best thing to do is expect exactly what the site says: Shibata presenting updates on upcoming games on Wii U and 3DS (or someone else in the case of Northern America, they didn't say who...).
Ooooooooohhhhhhhh, finally Mario Kart 8 DLC packs 3 and 4 featuring Bowser Jr. and the Junior Clown Kart! And an update featuring on-screen speedometer and 200cc Time Trials!
Oh, wait...
Well, at least the new model for Twilight Princess Link is left handed, so Twilight Princess HD could really be the GameCube version...
@ChristopherM Actaully, if you look carefully ( http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n09/mariohanafuda/index.html in case you missed it before), the designs of the cards of the new deck are still the traditional Hanafuda ones - look at the plants in the background, at the ribbons and at the colors used - only with this deck they went much more creative!
@AVahne Well, they have a Napoleon Mario on the box, so perhaps they are aiming at a certain quality, though this might just be a reference to the past of Nintendo
In case you were asking: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n09/mariohanafuda/index.html a)there is a Yoshi's Island set b)there is a set with Yoshi, Baby Yoshi and... Birdo! (GCN era, here we come!) c)the "princesses" are: Peach, Rosalinda, Daisy and ...Toadette?!?!?!?!?! d)as @NintyMan noticed, there is also a Donkey Kong Country set e)yes, there is a Luigi's Mansion set! f)there is also a set with Bowser, Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings (yuppy!) If you want to know how to play: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n09/hana-kabu_games/index.html
@Tsurii Unfortunately Yoshi's Island is the last game he directed (he was an assistant director of Super Mario 64, though). This is why I was thinking about Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island when you mentioned the "two of my favorite games" (even if Link's Awakening and A Link To The Past are masterpieces; man, Tezuka was a GREAT director!)
Ok, Miyamoto this time really didn't have a role in the downfall, I would say it was pretty natural to stop an excessive expense on CGI cutscenes, especially for the case of Project H.A.M.M.E.R. whose game design was yet to be clarified.
