@GrailUK I did too, the racing was great. I never really understood why it got a bad rap. The SSX series was underway & people just loved the outlandish tricks. It as a straight downhill racer avalanche was fantastic.
Yes please, 1080 is still my favourite snowboarding game even after all these years. The feel, the way the board connects and interacts with the snow is unmatched in my opinion.
And just the atmosphere of the game. I have the cart next to my N64 & CRT ready to play any time.
@HenHiro It’s strange that so few people seem to understand that. The atmosphere, inventiveness and most importantly the gameplay - ie the raw handling of Mario is nowhere near as good as World or 3. They never managed to recapture that incredible magic. I’m fine with that - I have the originals on the SNES on CRT so that just makes playing those old games all the more special. CRTs make the games beautiful, a quality that modern displays will never capture.
I think I played this back in the day. Another example how CRTs make these old games look so beautiful. Looks so basic and blocky here but on a CRT it’d look gorgeous - smooth and clean. The sprites take on a different cartoony look.
@HeadPirate check back on your info my friend - the NES output in progressive scan. Other later consoles output in interlaced (not interchanged) like the GameCube, PS1, Dreamcast, all of which also had progressive options in many cases. So as a rule of thumb, in most cases, consoles before the GameCube PlayStation 2, Dreamcast etc. output in progressive and the SNES and NES generation consoles output 60fps in many games.
Not meaning to be rude at all it’s worth looking into. I’m a hardcore retro gamer - lots of retro consoles, CRTs etc. All I can advise is not to go too far down that rabbit hole - it’ll consume your life!
I do agree that it looks a bit uninspiring so far but I expect that’ll change hugely for the better as the project continues.
No matter what people do with digital solutions, emulation etc. I’ll always feel Mario 64 looks best on a good old CRT with an RGB mod. Hasn’t improved in 25 years & probably never will.
If anyone wants to challenge me on this I’ll argue you under the table (Tongue in cheek light hearted challenge!)
@cyrus_zuo Absolutely agreed. I played it back in the day & couldn't get into it. Then years later I thought sod it, I’ll give this the real college try. I played hours & hours of it - there’s no way this game comes close to a Zelda game. It came out at the same time as twilight princess and there were people suggesting Okami was a better game. Very very far from it. It’s a decent game but will never be in the same tier as Zelda.
@Yorumi perfect thanks - and getting a medal is just a case of getting a high enough score on each level isn’t it? ie getting as many rings as possible
@Yorumi Thanks for that & good info re emulators - I have the n64 cart on CRT. So is the main objective to get high scores on each run? So basically get the most rings possible while prioritising the higher score rings? Or is there another objective as well?
@Anti-Matter Damn I'm completely with you. Of course mobile games will never be physical but I can't stand micro transaction, free to play etc. I have a good sized physical collection of many games & consoles going back to the SNES and think the idea of the inevitable all-digital future is a little sad.
@MisterKorman This is the thing with all alternative controllers. If the analogue stick isn’t mapped perfectly to the original then it doesn’t matter how good the controller is. Even the fabled hori pad for the N64 is too sensitive.
It’s an amazing controller - yes, the D-pad was in an awkward place but most games used the analogue stick anyway. The left hand rests on the stick & trigger more naturally than any controller before or since.
@GrailUK you’re right - I have a few new ones. If you take a new one apart & apply ceramic grease to the gears & it’ll last for years. It’s a fantastic controller.
@BloodNinja if your CRT doesn’t have too many hours on it & you’re using RGB, it’ll comfortably beat every HDMI solution out there including the fabled UltraHDMI.
Seeing that Qualcomm have a long established stable of world class AAA first party franchises and a solid line of third party developers to support the system, I think Nintendo could be in serious trouble here..
@electrolite77 To me, RGB scart at 480i on CRT was the perfect for GC. I have options for 480p but it always looks too pixelated. The GC always looked super smooth back in the day and after trying 480p for so long, I realised that the interlacing of 480i on a CRT smooths the image perfectly.
@Zenszulu Yes & even then they don’t look anywhere near as good as CRT. Unless you like the super pixelated N64 look (which I don’t), where the UltraHDMI’s de-blur function would be perfect.
@HollowSpectre @Perryg92 Yes, all GCVideo is exactly the same code & works the same. All the older units give the same quality as this one. Only when units with enhanced scaling come out will we see improved HDMI & even then only if it’s scaling is better than your TV’s. The analogue output is perfect & will never need improving.
One day they’ll be able to emulate the CRT look on these things. To be able to select between a pro monitor, consumer trinitron or shadow mask with all the associated phosphor bloom & bleed would be wonderful, but would take a much more powerful FPGA and a very bright, non degenerative 8K panel.
@Linux7055 There’s a specific reason that N didn’t go beyond 720p with Mario 64 that many people don’t realise. It’s because at 1080p and above the edges of the polygons get too sharp and the game looks off.
@BigDebbie Is that you in your profile photo? Yes I totally agree with you - the original had a certain mood, a darker more atmospheric feeling than the 3DS version and all these mods. Exactly as @sigourneybeaver said, the original’s atmosphere will be hard to replicate anywhere except on an original console on a CRT.

@ThanosReXXX I agree, I’d do love to see a wave race sequel.

Re: Random: There's A Project Aiming To Make Super Mario 64 Fully Ray Traced
@JamesJose7 You’re right- and Nintendo has been producing games that run at 60fps since the NES days.
Re: Random: There's A Project Aiming To Make Super Mario 64 Fully Ray Traced
@BloodNinja Exactly, this will look much better in 6 months.
Re: Random: There's A Project Aiming To Make Super Mario 64 Fully Ray Traced
@N64-ROX Did you not see how some of the projectiles light up the walls when they travel down the corridors?
I agree though. In fact I'd much rather play quake 2 on a CRT monitor with a 3dfx Voodoo card.

Re: Takaya Imamura Describes Star Fox 64 As "The Game Of My Life"
@Yorumi Thanks! Just going through training mode on the N64 mode, loving it. I didn’t realise it was so nuanced, thanks for the advice 👍
Re: Takaya Imamura Describes Star Fox 64 As "The Game Of My Life"
@Yorumi perfect thanks - so do the rings not contribute to the score as well? What are they for if not?

@huyi what would be your choice?
Re: Feature: Can't Buy Super Mario 64 On Switch Anymore? Psst! The N64 Original Is Better
Slower though they may be, there's no denying that PAL N64s look better on CRTs than NTSC.

@1UP_MARIO Love it!
Re: Feature: Can't Buy Super Mario 64 On Switch Anymore? Psst! The N64 Original Is Better
@BloodNinja TBH s-video is almost as good & will still beat every non CRT solution out there. You have the ultimate N64 setup, enjoy!

I used to be a CRT snob but I’ve realised how ridiculous that is - the most important thing is just to enjoy the games.

Re: Hardware Review: The Retro-Bit Prism HD Is Another Great GameCube HDMI Adapter
@electrolite77 So true! Although a lot of us were aware of all this at the time & used NTSC consoles modded with RGB.
